Perspectives from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Welcome to the 2020-2021 season of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra! It is our 89th year serving this community, and it will be a year like no other. During the first half of 2020, the FMSO and the rest of the world have had to face the far-reaching effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to thank the entire FMSO staff, orchestra, and Board of Trustees for being proactive in their efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of each other by practicing social distancing, transitioning to online meetings, and making necessary accommodations for the musicians on and off the stage.

Our mission is “Enriching our community through the power of live music that educates, entertains, and inspires.” This year, we will look to achieve the “power of live music” portion leveraging the “power of technology” in ways we have not done so before, creating what we hope will be a unique concert experience for all of you. I am excited to get the most of out of our Reimagined season, and we hope you will enjoy the new format. As always, we welcome and encourage your feedback as we learn and navigate these uncharted waters.

I would also like to thank all of you, our patrons, volunteers, donors, and sponsors, who help keep arts organizations like the FMSO alive in this community, especially during these challenging times. In my tenure on the Board I have heard many, many stories of how the FMSO and music in general have impacted or even changed people’s lives. Music truly is inspiring, and it is a gift we hope to continue offering to this community for many years to come.

Perspectives from the Music Director The last time “life as we know it” was so abruptly altered due to a pandemic was over a hundred years ago; so, for most of us this is pretty new territory to navigate.

In the performing arts—where physical communication in real time is part of our raison d’etre—have we been dealt a death blow? I maintain, emphatically, no.

For the foreseeable future during this season we will use the parameters of physical distancing, coupled with today’s technology, to provide you with some marvelous music, including beautiful and powerful distillations of great orchestral masterpieces, as well as presenting works that both highlight the various sections of our orchestra or simply use a smaller one. There are many, many works—from the classics to the present—that fall into these categories.

Along with slightly larger ensembles playing some of the great classics, the remaining programs will include some spectacular works for more unusual instrumental combinations, as well as music by under-represented composers. This is not just a nod to diversity but high time to embrace it, as the quality of the music itself will reveal.

This season we have an authentic opportunity to explore the myriad works that lie outside those suited to the “standard-sized symphony orchestra.” Despite the relatively small number of FSO musicians on the stage at any one time, I am confident that you will not feel cheated.

Perspectives from the Executive Director The global pandemic has taken a huge toll on the performing arts. Musicians want very much to perform for live audiences, and patrons enjoy hearing live music.

Because of the pandemic, of course, live concerts simply are not possible these days.

And yet, the importance of music in our lives has never felt more present. The arts are inextricably intertwined with everything we do in life, and I would say that music is at the top of the list of the arts we miss the most. People sang when the Berlin Wall fell.

What is the most famous piece of art in the world? Is it Michelangelo’s David? The Mona Lisa? Or maybe the opening refrain of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony? I know what my answer is.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of music in your own life, and in the fabric of the F-M area. We are proud to make this area a better place to live and work, and we are delighted to be making music again. One year ago, no one thought of reimagined Masterworks concerts, with an orchestra of only 15, performed before no audience, with the “concert” being sent to your computer, tablet, or smart TV. The creativity of Music Director Christopher Zimmerman and the commitment of our talented musicians have overcome the obstacles thrown at us.

Thank you, as well, for your steadfast support of the FMSO, and for your concern both for your own safety and for the safety of our musicians. CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN IEVA JOKUBAVICIUTE P IANO M USIC D IRECTOR Christopher Zimmerman has served as Music Director of the Fargo Moorhead Symphony Orchestra since 2013.

Reviewer John Lamb wrote, “Christopher Zimmerman gave the… orchestra a workout Saturday night and gave the audience something to stand and cheer about.” He also serves as Music Director of the Fairfax (Virginia) Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Zimmerman was recognized as the winner of the American Conducting Prize in 2011, a new award given for nationwide performances by orchestral conductors, choral conductors, and a host of other categories.

His debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was followed by engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. He has since conducted orchestras all over the world, including the Prague Symphony, the Slovak Philharmonic, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Mexico City Philharmonic, the Caracas Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro, and the Shenzhen Symphony, to name a few. In opera he has worked as the assistant conductor for Carmen at the Nimes Festival and as assistant conductor for Salome at the Mexico City Opera where he was re-invited to conduct a full production of Gianni Schicchi the following season. His U.S. operatic debut conducting Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah won the National Opera Association’s First Prize as did Bright Sheng’s Song of Majnun, which he also led.

Zimmerman’s career has embraced teaching and working with student orchestras and conductors. In 1993 he joined the conducting faculty at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati where he was Music Director of their concert orchestra, and in 1999 he was appointed as Fuller Professor of Orchestral Studies at the Hartt School as well as Music Director of the Hartt Symphony. A much sought-after clinician and pedagogue, Mr. Zimmerman continues to teach at workshops and festivals around the world.

Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Yale with a B.A. in Music, and received his Master’s from the University of Michigan.

He also studied with Seiji Ozawa and Gunther Schuller at Tanglewood, and at the Pierre Monteux School in Maine with Charles Bruck. Zimmerman served as an apprentice to Andrew Davis and the Toronto Symphony and in Prague, as assistant conductor to Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Lithuanian pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute has earned critical acclaim throughout North America and Europe with powerfully and intricately crafted performances. The Washington Post said her performances are ‘almost impossibly detailed and riveting in every way’, and The New York Times described her as ‘an artist of commanding technique, refined temperament, and persuasive insight.’ In 2006, she was honored as a recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.

Ms. Jokubaviciute has performed in recital across the world.

She made her orchestral debuts with the Chicago Symphony; in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; with the American Youth Philharmonic in 2016, and in February 2017, she was the soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo in Uruguay. Her piano trio—Trio Cavatina—won the 2009 Naumburg International Chamber Music Competition.

In the fall of 2016, Ms. Jokubaviciute began a collaboration with the violinist Midori, with recitals in Canada, at the Cartagena International Music Festival in Colombia, and in Germany and Austria. They have given subsequent recitals in Japan, Germany, Austria, Poland, Peru, Columbia, Mexico, India, and Sri Lanka.

A much sought-after chamber musician and collaborator, Ms. Jokubaviciute regularly tours and appears at international music festivals including: Marlboro; Ravinia; Bard; Caramoor; Chesapeake Chamber Music; Prussia Cove in Cornwall, England; and Festival de la musique de chambre at La Lointaine in France. She has participated in the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Lübeck, Germany; the Katrina Chamber Music Festival, Aland Islands, Finland; the Oulunsalo Chamber Music Festival in Oulunsalo, Finland; the Joaquín Turina Chamber Music Festival in Seville, Spain; Music in the Vineyards in Napa Valley, CA; the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, VT; the Salt Bay Chamber Music Festival in Damariscotta, Maine; and the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Ms. Jokubaviciute earned degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and Mannes College of Music; her principal teachers have been Seymour Lipkin and Richard Goode.

Currently, she is Associate Professor of the Practice of Piano at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, having previously been on the faculty at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia. She is also on the faculty at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music School and Festival in Blue Hill, Maine, and has established herself as a mentoring artist at the Marlboro Music Festival in Marlboro, Vermont.

TOM STRAIT T RUMPET Tom Strait has been a member of the music faculty at Minnesota State University Moorhead since 2001. At MSUM, he teaches brass instruments and directs the MSUM Jazz Ensemble.

He holds a Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado, as well as degrees from Henderson State University and the University of Texas.

His past teachers include Donald Kramer, Raymond Crisara, and William Pfund.

Before coming to MSUM, Dr. Strait taught for several years at both the university and public school levels and served in the U.S. Air Force, playing with the USAF Academy Falconaires. An active freelance trumpeter, he has performed with many artists, including Bob Hope, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Doc Severinsen, and Randy Brecker. Currently, he serves as Principal Trumpet with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. Tom Strait is a Yamaha performing artist.

PROGRAM NOTES ARVO PÄRT - FRATRES For the last 40 years, Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) has enjoyed success as one of the most frequently performed composers in the world. He has been lauded for the mysticism that pervades his music as well as for his groundbreaking compositional approach using tintinnabuli. This method, developed by Pärt around 1976, is from the Latin word for “bell,” and is achieved by having one musical line move primarily in stepwise motion around a central pitch, while another line emphasizes the pitches of the tonic triad.

Fratres, written in 1977, is one of his earliest works that incorporates tintinnabuli. It is scored for three voices with unspecified instrumentation, allowing for great versatility in its realization.

MARTHA HELEN SCHMIDT - PETITE PRELUDE AND FUGUE Ms. Schmidt furnished the following material and observations about her work: “Martha Helen Schmidt is a composer and educator based in Minneapolis, MN. She has held various teaching positions in public schools as both a private instructor and ensemble leader. Schmidt has written for a multitude of different ensembles and soloists, and has recently found her true passion in writing art songs and song cycles. Petite Prelude and Fugue was commissioned by the Aurora Brass in 1994 and premiered that same year at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Minneapolis. Schmidt drew great inspiration from the music of J.S. Bach and Benjamin Britten as she composed this work. The form of the piece is modeled after the preludes and fugues found in Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, and the harmonic language is in the style of Britten—broken triads and extended tonality abound.”

GEORGE WALKER - LYRIC FOR STRINGS George Walker (1922-2018) was an American composer and pianist. He toured extensively as a concert pianist, held several collegiate teaching positions, and studied composition with the renowned Nadia Boulanger. In 1996, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for Lilacs, scored for orchestra and soprano soloist. Walker was the first African American to win this prestigious award. The current work (originally a string quartet called Lament) dates from 1946, when Walker was a graduate student at the Curtis Institute of Music, and was written after the passing of his grandmother and dedicated to her memory.

RICHARD WAGNER - SIEGFRIED IDYLL Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is one of the most compelling, controversial, and fascinating figures in the history of classical music. The intense beauty of his compositions juxtaposed with his antisemitic writings have polarized musicians and historians for well over a century. Siegfried Idyll is often labeled as a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra and was written in 1869 after the birth of his son, Siegfried. The piece was presented as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima, and first performed on Christmas Day in 1870. Originally meant to be a private piece for his wife, Wagner expanded the orchestration and published it in 1878.

Of course, Wagner was perhaps best known for his operas. In 1876, the opera Siegfried premiered—and audiences may have noticed that it borrowed a great deal of material from the earlier chamber work.

JEAN SIBELIUS - VALSE TRISTE Aside from the beloved symphonic poem Finlandia, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is perhaps best known for Valse Triste. Originally composed in 1903 as incidental music for a play by Sibelius’ brother-in-law, it is much better known in its revised 1904 version as an orchestral work. Its continued popularity has secured its place in the standard orchestral repertory. Sibelius is recognized as Finland’s greatest composer, often using Finnish folk music as inspiration and musical material. Valse Triste is no exception, and its elegant simplicity has assured its continuing popularity on the concert stage as well as in film scores.

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH - CONCERTO NO. 1 FOR PIANO, TRUMPET, AND STRINGS, OP. 35 Throughout history, few composers’ music has been as politically involved as that of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). His music was frequently criticized and censored by the Soviet government for being “overly decadent” and “abrasive.” Despite constant suppression by the authoritarian regime of Josef Stalin, Shostakovich created some of the most remarkably individual (and exceptional) music of the 20th century. He drew from a number of musical influences—in particular from Stravinsky’s Neoclassical style and the resultant attention to form and motive. This concerto could be described as a “double concerto” due to its prominent solo treatment of both piano and trumpet. It was written and premiered in 1933, and achieved critical acclaim almost immediately.

THE FARGO-MOORHEAD SYMPHONY ENDOWMENT FUND The Cadenza Fund was established in 1981 to provide for the future stability of the Symphony. Since that time, many people have contributed generously to the fund.

Annual proceeds from this fund support the general operations of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. All three funds are ND Certified Endowment Funds, which qualify donors for a state income tax credit under current state law.

The Cadenza Fund

This is the major fund within the Endowment, which supports the general operations of the symphony. Our Endowment Policy states that 3.55 of a 3-year rolling value of the fund will be the automatic annual draw, with an additional 1.5% available through majority vote of the Board. No further draws on the principal or earnings may be made.

Established in 2019, the new Kids in the [Concert] Hall Fund is an Operating Reserve Fund which will provide funding for current and expanded programming and educational services for children, students and families throughout the region. Current programs include the new FAMILY CONCERT at the Fargo Theatre and the annual Young People’s Concerts performed during the school day for all area fourth-graders. Future programming may include additional performances, FMSO musicians in area schools, and more.
