MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings Residents,
It is hard for me to believe that the summer of 2022 is behind us; and before we know it, the holiday season will be upon us. For me, I reflect on all the blessings that have been given to me and my family, and I sincerely hope you will take the time to think about how grateful you are to live in a safe, friendly and caring community Please take note of the work being done in re-designing our landscaping as well as a new handrail at the entrance to the Community Center
Recently, new neighbors of mine moved into our HOA; and as I began explaining about our community, I went over the various ways to stay in touch with what is happening within Sun City Aliante. I think it is important that we are all reminded of how to learn about events and important Board decisions that have been taken on your behalf. Here are my suggestions:
• Read The Breeze magazine when it arrives in your mailbox or online.
• Sign up at the Front Desk of the Community Center for the weekly eBlast to get the latest information on Board and club meetings, events and lunch 'n' learn seminars.
• Visit the website www.suncityaliante.org for a wealth of information about our community
• Attend the Board of Directors monthly meetings.
• Attend the upcoming Coffee with the Board on Monday, November 7.
One important distinction between us and other HOAs is the amount of information shared with residents. It is vital that you feel “connected” to where you live and being informed is a critical tool in achieving the goal of transparency Our community manager and his staff are always available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
I want to restate the impact of inflation on our association. Prices of everything continue to increase and our vendors are increasing their contracted rates for goods and services. This has a negative effect on our recently passed budget; however, I feel we can prevent any assessment increase as we are financially sound. I mention this so when you review our expenses to our budget, you will see mounting overages to line items. No one can predict what inflation will do to our expenses in the upcoming year, but I can assure you that with sound investment and excellent review of our monthly expenses and income, we will maintain our financial excellence that we have exhibited over the years.
My wish for you is to have a wonderful Thanksgiving with whomever you choose to celebrate the day. In addition, please take a moment and thank all our veterans on November 11 for their service to our country
Stay safe and be well.
Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller

GRATITUDE
I appreciate the opportunity to explore gratitude with you.
In November we observe two holidays, Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving Day. We honor members of t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s A r m e d S e r v i c e s f o r t h e i r sacrifices and selfless duty on November 11. The Veterans Day Parade in Las Vegas commences at 10 a.m.; the parade starts on Gass Street and travels North on Fourth Street to Stewart Avenue. On November 12, please join our Veterans Club and Auxiliary for a community Spaghetti Dinner in the Vista Room We celebrate our blessings with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day November 24. Enjoy your November with gratitude.
Let us explore gratitude, the feeling of being grateful and wanting to express our thanks, starting with the poem “A Life Full of Gratitude,” by Catherine Pulsife.
A Life Full of Gratitude
May my life be full of gratitude.
May it be shown in my attitude. By the way that I act. And with any and all contacts.
Let my appreciation show Expressing it quickly not to slow For those who have helped me along. Even when I was stubborn and wrong.
May the kindness that was shown to me. Be kindness that I return so easy. May I always lend a hand To a child, woman, or man.
You see a life of gratitude is one. That makes you appreciate all that is done. You count your blessings every day From the time you are young until you are gray.
What are you grateful for? I am grateful for life, family, friends, home, health, abilities, and Sun City Aliante Our Gratitude Inventory keeps us feeling good and changes the way we think Gratitude inspires kindness and love Studies continue to show that focusing on the good, heals and is h
p
e psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”
The ”Magic” of gratitude is giving, sharing, and expressing gratitude. I have witnessed how expressing gratitude improved the lives of military brothers suffering from debilitating post traumatic syndrome disorder (PTSD) over time. I helped them notice, absorb, and journal the good things in their lives. Their families were able to rebuild relationships and live again. Spreading gratitude is wonderful and makes a substantial difference continuously

Hello Residents,
One of the best things about living here in Sun City Aliante is the number of committees, clubs, and special interest groups available to residents. One of these is SENIORS ASSISTING SENIORS. The volunteers are made up of fellow homeowners who have all kinds of different backgrounds. They are available to assist residents with the following:
1. Replace light bulbs
2. Change smoke detector batteries
3. Put salt in water softeners
4. Loan out durable medical equipment such as: wheelchairs, walkers, potty chairs, shower chairs, canes, and knee scooters.
If you need their assistance, please call 702-981-3149.
Another organization to note is the Patrol Committee The patrol volunteers are led by Phil Zanello, Patrol Committee Chairman and Assistant Patrol Leader, Mick Gillins. They are the volunteers who drive in the community and act as the “eyes and ears” watching and listening for any suspicious activity They are fairly a new committee and are always seeking new volunteers. All volunteers will be trained by Dave Conner and receive a uniform to distinguish them when they are out in the community patrolling. If you have some extra time, willing to give back to the community, or solely just want to make some friends, this is a great committee to get involved in.
Friendly reminder: Security cameras and camera equipped doorbells are permitted and should be mounted at a height enabling proper entryway coverage or ground area coverage of your home or yard only and should not be aimed or focused at adjacent neighbors. Camera colors can bronze, beige, white, brown, metallic or charcoal. All types of security cameras are subject to Architectural Review Committee (ARC) review and approval. No black fixtures are permitted.
Festive lights or other decorations may be placed, erected or displayed on a LOT in commemoration or celebration of holidays. All holid ay decorations and lights shall be installed no more than 30 days prior to the start of the holiday period and must be removed within 30 days after the holidays have ended.
It is hard to believe the holiday season is upon us. In celebration of Thanksgiving Day, the Sun City Aliante Community Center will close at noon on Wednesday, November 23 and all day on Thursday, November 24 in observance of Thanksgiving Day The Community Center will reopen on Friday, November 26 for regular hours (6 a.m. – 9 p.m.). The Administration Offices will close at noon on Wednesday, November 24 and all day on November 25 and 26. Have an awesome Thanksgiving Holiday
Just a reminder…Sunday, November 6 marks the end of Daylight Saving Time in the United States, and the clocks go back one hour at 2 a.m. You gain back the hour you lost last March, and the days become shorter and it becomes dark earlier.
I want to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy all the traditional holiday foods with your family and friends.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Residents,
I want to take this opportunity to thank Smith's Pharmacy for setting up an Immunization Clinic in the Community Center to make Influenza (Flu) COVID-19, Shingles, Pneumonia and Tetanus shots available for our residents on Friday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Smith's Pharmacy began holding Immunization Clinics for our residents in 2019. This year's event was held in conjunction with New Resident Welcome and Club Open House and events held in the Sun City Aliante Parking Lot.
A special note of appreciation to Lisa Hammel and Rich Boman, pharmacy experts, who together organized and coordinated with their Smith's team to administer the shots. I also want to thank Sun City Aliante resident Toni Stuart for taking the lead in organizing volunteers to assist the Smith's team. Congratulations for such a well-executed event.
During the holiday season, especially, I feel thankful and experience gratitude for my many blessings, family, friends, career and much more. According to Inner Challenge website at https://30dayschallenge.org/challenge/30-daygratitude-challenge/, gratitude is a vital part of the Buddhist philosophy; but in the West, we have to rediscover its enormous power They suggest having an attitude of gratitude will change your life and bring you more happiness, satisfaction, better health and greater resiliency. It sounds good to me! Why not check out their website?
I hope your enjoy the article on page 24 introducing our 102 year old Sun City Aliante resident Connie Levites. Lean about her secret to longevity and enjoying life!
You should not miss the special events on November 15 and 16. The Fire Department will offer a Symposium on November 15 at 10 a.m., when you will receive valuable tips on fire prevention. The following evening at 6 p.m. the North Las Vegas Police Department's Crime Prevention Specialist, Gina Perez, will be on hand to share important home safety tips.
You may be surprised when you read some fun facts about Thanksgiving Day. For example, did you know that cranberries are more than a side dish? Are your aware that turkey was the inspiration for the original TV dinner? See page 32 for more fun facts.
One of my favorite times of the year is Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend, when we get together with my son, Brad, and his family who live in Reno. They usually come down to Las Vegas for the holiday. Of course, we enjoy the traditional yummy holiday foods and my husband, Ray, usually roasts the turkey outside on the grill; so, it has a delicious smoked flavor
I just thought I would share some hits about healthy holiday eating. Eat your protein first. Protein in turkey is not only good for you; it helps suppress your appetite. Swap salt for spices, such as garlic, thyme, basil, and a dash of lemon to season your food. Sit farther away from the food; so, you will be less tempted. Of course, you can throw out all these suggestions and just enjoy yourself! That is my plan.
If you have any questions about The Breeze or eBlast, please reach out to me at 702-429-1623 or email twilliamson@suncityaliante.us.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

COUNCILMAN WARD 4 RICHARD CHERCIO
Hello Sun City Residents,
The holidays are upon us! I want to thank each and every one of you who have gone above and beyond to make our Aliante community the loving and family-friendly neighborhood that it is. It is what makes us North Las Vegas proud.
I am so excited to tell you that Pacific Group and the City of North Las Vegas officially broke ground for the new Helios Health and Wellness Campus on October 4. This event kicks off a new era of economic development and job creation that will result in a transformative campus and economic hub to serve our growing population.
The project, designed as a Job Creation Zone, has now been named HELIOS, reflecting the focus of the project. Part world-class medical
center and part community gathering place to dine, shop and stay, Helios will offer the North Las Vegas community advanced and accessible healthcare hubs and gathering places for locals to mix and mingle.
The project, which is stated for completion over the next 7 to 10 years, is anticipated to include more than 2 million square feet of l a b o r a t o r y, r e s e a r c h a n d m e d i c a l o ffi c e space. In addition, more the 500,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space will be available, as well as 250 rooms for lodging. The project is anticipated to create more than 10,000 jobs.
The founders of Helios also recognize that thousands of Las Vegas residents are sorely underserved in traditional retail needs as well, such as grocers, retailers, restaurants, fitness options and traditional neighborhood services. Helios has dedicated more than 20 acres to the development of those needs exclusively
Now that November is finally here, I am thrilled to invite you all to my Paws in the Park event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov 6 at Aliante Nature Discovery Park, 2627 Nature Park Drive in North Las Vegas. We will have some amazing community partners and exhibitors there, as well as contests and activities planned for all our furry friends. I hope to see you all there!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Respectfully,
Richard Cherchio Ward 4 Councilman

YOUR VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE!
ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW Friday, November 4 & Saturday, November 5, 2022
For your convenience, Sun City Aliante offered Early Voting in the Community Center on October 27 & October 28 in coordination with the Clark County Election Department.
The Election Department did not have sufficient staff to set up a location at the Sun City Aliante Community Center on Election Day, November 8. However, please see the listing below for voting locations that are in close proximity to our community
NOVEMBER 8, 2022, ELECTION DAY (FEDERAL / STATE / COUNTY / MUNICIPAL)
All voters registered in Clark County, NV, may vote at any early voting site or from 7a.m. to 7p.m. on Election Day at any Vote Center of their choice in Clark County, including those who received a mail ballot and have not yet returned it.
All early voting sites and Election Vote Centers will also serve as mail ballot drop-off locations. On Election Day the three nearest Vote Centers, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. are:
• Aliante Library located at 2400 W. Deer Springs Way
• Cram Middle School located at 1900 W. Deer Springs Way
• Las Vegas Athletic Club located at 6050 N. Decatur Blvd (there will be in a large Event Tent in the back parking lot)
What races are on the ballot and who is running?
Governor: incumbent Steve Sisolak (D), Joe Lombardo (R) U.S. Senate: incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto (D), Adam Laxalt (R) U.S. House: all 4 seats
State Senate: 11 of 21 seats
State Assembly: all 42 seats
What is new this year?
A state voting law passed in 2021 made changes, including the creation of a universal ballot-by-mail process and changed ballot deadlines. The once-adecade redistricting process may affect which candidates appear on your b
congressional districts and to all state legislative districts. Voters can search by address to find their new districts by using the online 2021 district lookup tool.
Do I need identification to vote?
No, unless you did not show identification when you registered. Every person who registers to vote in Nevada must provide one of the following:
• Nevada driver's license or state ID number
• The last four digits of a Social Security number
• A tribal ID number
Same-day registration is also an option. To do this you must vote in person at a polling location, before or on Election Day, and have a valid Nevada driver's license, ID card or tribal ID card. If your license or ID card does not include your current address, you'll need to provide proof of residence, too, with a utility bill, paycheck, bank statement or other acceptable document listed on the secretary of state's website.
Verify your voter registration information on the registered voter services page of the secretary of state's website. This and more information can be found on our website at www.clarkcountynv.gov/vote.

NEIGHBORHOOD
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN:
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
We have a simple message this month and that is to be a good neighbor You may already know your neighbors and if you do, keep in touch. If you do not know them, make it a point to meet them. You never know when you might need each other If something does not seem right at a neighbor's home, take the time to check it out. Knock on the door and make sure they are okay
Here are a few signs that something could be wrong:
● Trash cans left out for several days after trash day
● Newspapers piling up in the driveway
● The garage door left open for hours with no activity
Maybe they just forgot to bring in the trash cans, the newspaper or close the garage door, but it is the right thing to do as a good neighbor Hopefully, your neighbor would take the time to do the same for you.
HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS PORCH PIRATES This time of year, unsavory characters are waiting for the delivery truck to drop a package at your front porch. They will take your package and be gone before you know it. Schedule your deliveries on a day you know you will be home. If you cannot be there, ask a neighbor to watch for it. Keep your eyes open any time you are outside. Report suspicious activity or vehicles to 311.
For information regarding the Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch program, contact our coordinator, Jim Blossey, at jimandpatb@embarqmail.com or 775530-5119.
Be safe. If you see something, say something. Your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains

CONGRATULATIONS TO CONNIE LEVITES…102 YEARS YOUNG ON NOVEMBER 2, 2022
I recently interviewed Connie Levites's daughter, Sharon Luke, about her mom, to find out if she knows her secret to a long life. Connie resides with Sharon in her home in Sun City Aliante.
By Trish Williamson
To my knowledge, Connie Levites, who turns 102 years of age on November 2, 2022, is the oldest resident of Sun City Aliante. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 2, 1920. Her parents later moved to Los Angeles, where she spent her formative years. Connie has two sisters, one has passed away, but her baby sister, Shirley, just turned 95 and lives in San Fernando Valley
During the Great Depression, Connie had to drop out of high school to support her family She then went to work for the May Company Connie married her sweetheart, Walter, in 1940, and they had three girls: Rochelle, Arlene and Sharon (who got away with everything, according to Sharon).
Sharon reported her mother is very well physically During Connie's last visit, her doctor said, "You are doing so well; you will probably live for at least another five years."
Connie attributes her longevity to "good scotch, good beer, and periodically, good wine!" She said one of Connie's favorite sayings is "It is 5 o'clock somewhere."
With these words, Sharon described her mother: "Connie is kind, generous, accepting of other people, and a good cook. She also has a great sense of humor and is a delight to be around. She is so down to earth; my friends love her because she is so personable."
For example, for Connie's 94th birthday, she wanted to go to the "Thunder From Down Under" show on the Las Vegas Strip. After seeing a sign created by one of her friends, one of the Thunder "boys" came down to Connie, picked her up and swooped her up on the stage. Of course, she could not resist giving him a big hug after they sang "Happy Birthday." The next year's birthday party was held at Chippendale's show
I imagine by now you have guessed that Connie loves to go out - whether it is a show on The Strip, a movie, brunch or dinner, she is ready "Mom really sparkles when we go out; she's on her game," said Sharon. Connie frequently heads to "Wonder Nails" salon with Sharon. On Connie's birthday, she gets the royal treatment - along with a birthday cake and flowers.
While Connie sincerely misses many of her friends, who have unfortunately passed away, she is surrounded by loved ones She has her sister, her three daughters, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren and good health! She is truly blessed!
Connie is a hidden treasure residing right in our Sun City Aliante community. From her own actions, you know she is 102 years young! Congratulations again Connie!

Would you believe that this custom is thousands of years older than the holiday? Wishing on bird bones traces back to the ancient Etruscans, who used chickens to help them predict the future. After the chickens died, the Etruscans would dry their wishbones in the sun and keep them as good luck charms.

Football Has Been Played on Thanksgiving - Since 1876, football has been played on Thanksgiving. Yale and Princeton, who have played each other annually since 1873, faced off for their first holiday game on Thanksgiving Day, 1876. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, modern-day football as a Thanksgiving Day tradition with the NFL goes back to 1934, when the Detroit Lions decided to play against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day The Lions' owner, George A. Richards, wanted to bolster his team's standing in Detroit.
It Took Over Two Centuries for Thanksgiving to Become a National Holiday Sarah Hale is known as the "Mother of Thanksgiving" because, at a time when the holiday was only celebrated in the Northeast, she spent four decades campaigning for a national day of thanks. In 1863, she finally persuaded President Abraham Lincoln to reinstate the holiday nationwide. Hale was also a successful editor and poet, penning the famous "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and retiring at the ripe age of 90.

The original TV dinner resulted from a Thanksgiving miscalculation - In 1953, an executive at Swanson miscalculated the company's upcoming Thanksgiving turkey sales, leaving the company with some 260 tons of frozen fowl.. Fortunately, a salesman by the name of Gerry Thomas suggested packaging the excess product into trays—along with some traditional sides—and selling them to consumers as TV dinners. Thomas was apparently inspired by the pre-portioned trays used to serve airplane food. Swanson sliced and packaged their extra turkey, and the TV dinner was born.
"Jingle Bells" Was Originally a Thanksgiving Song - The original "Jingle Bells" song, written by James Pierpoint in 1857, was actually titled "One Horse Open Sleigh." This soon-to-be hit was so popular that it was played and sung well into the Christmas season despite being intended for Thanksgiving. The song quickly became a popular Christmas staple during the holiday seasons that followed, and two years later, in 1859, the title was changed to "Jingle Bells."
The Butterball hotline answers 100,000 turkey-related questions every year Butterball, a popular turkey company, opens a turkey hotline in November and December to answer any turkey-related questions you may have. Founded in 1981, the Turkey Talk Line went from receiving a modest 11,000 questions the first year to answering more than 100,000 questions during the holiday season.
SIX SUPER FOODS FOR ARTHHRITIS
in the body, says Prest. This flavorful oil might even help slow the deterioration of cartilage in people with osteoarthritis, according to a research review published in Nutrients.
By Barbara Brody
If your hips, knees or hands have gotten stiffer and more painful in recent years, you might be among the more than 32 million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis (OA). This degenerative joint condition, often described as the “wear and tear” form of arthritis, causes the cartilage that normally cushions joints to break down, allowing bone to rub against bone. The result: pain, redness, stiffness and inflammation. This kind of arthritis is mainly treated by pain-relieving medications, but lifestyle changes can also help a lot. Exercise and weight loss tend to be top of the list.
Regularly moving the impacted joint helps stretch and strengthen the muscles surrounding it, which can ease stiffness and promote mobility If you're overweight, shedding a few pounds will help take some strain off a weight-bearing joint (like your knee or hip), as well as reduce the amount of inflammatory proteins that are naturally produced by fat cells.
Dietary changes are, of course, the key to losing weight, but t w e a k i n g y o u r e a t i n g h a b i t s c a n a l s o h e l p c o n t r o l a r t h r i t i s symptoms. That's because while osteoarthritis is primarily caused by overstressing one or more joints, “there's also a component that has to do with the body's response to injury, which is inflammation,” says Melissa Ann Prest, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for t h e A c a d e m y o f N u t r i t i o n a n d D i e t e t i c s S h e p o i n t s t o t h e Mediterranean and DASH diets, which limit added sugar, refined carbohydrates and saturated fat, as anti-inflammatory standouts.
Superfood No 1. Salmon
Oily fish like salmon are r i c h i n i n fl a m m a t i o n fi g h t i n g o m e g a 3 f a t t y a c i d s , w h i c h m a y h e l p curtail OA symptoms, says Toby Amidor, a registered dietician and author of The F a m i l y I m m u n i t y Cookbook (October 2021).
Salmon contains both EPA a n d D H A , t w o t y p e s o f omega-
Superfood No. 2. Olive oil
Extra-virgin olive oil doesn't have many omega-3s, but it does contain other unsaturated fats that similarly help quiet inflammation
Perhaps most exciting for arthritis patients, however, is the fact that olive oil contains a compound called oleocanthal. Scientists have determined that oleocanthal has a mechanism of action that's similar to the way NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen work to ease pain.
Superfood No. 3. Cherries
The ruby red hue is a hint that sweet cherries are packed with anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that are also found in blueberries and raspberries. Anthocyanins “may help minimize oxidation and oxidative stress that contribute to inflammation,” including in your joints, says Amidor Some research also suggests that cherry consumption might decrease levels of C reactive protein, an inflammatory protein that's associated with autoimmune forms of arthritis (like rheumatoid arthritis), as well as OA.
Superfood No. 4. Garlic
This pungent vegetable in the allium family is often touted for its ability to help ward off cancer, heart disease and the common cold. There's also reason to believe that it might reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. Several studies have suggested that loading up on garlic might translate to less pain from osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, according to a 2022 research review published in the European Journal of Pain.
Superfood No. 5. Spinach and kale
These leafy greens are loaded with vitamin K, which research suggests is important for cartilage health, says Prest. That might explain why observational studies have found that older adults who don't get enough K, which also plays a role in strengthening bones and helping blood to clot, are more apt to develop OA. Some scientists believe that vitamin K helps with arthritis by preventing the cartilage from calcifying (hardening).
Superfood No. 6: Honey
There's been some buzz around honey's purported health benefits since ancient times, and while more research is needed to see whether they truly hold up, this sticky substance contains numerous natural compounds that explain how it might help people with osteoarthritis.

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS SEASON OF GIVING 2022 November is upon us and Seniors with Warm Hearts is beginning its 2022 Season of Giving. Based on the success they achieved last year, they will continue with this approach to help spread some happiness to those in need this Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas Season. They will have a tabletop drop-off box for donations located in the lobby area of the Community Center near the Front Desk. Here is how you can help:
Thanksgiving Donations
For the month of November for Thanksgiving, Senior with Warm Hearts will collect donations for Project 150 You can make a check payable to Project 150 in the amount of $25.00 or more, which will supply a teen and their family of four with a HOLIDAY MEAL for Thanksgiving. They also accept monetary donations for Serving our Kids Foundation. You can make a check payable to Serving Our Kids Foundation in any dollar value you choose. The drop-off box for Thanksgiving Donations will be available from Monday, November 1 through Thursday, November 17.
Christmas Donations
Starting Thursday, November 17 through Wednesday, December 14, you will be able to pick a tag from their Season of Giving Christmas Tree which will be located in the lobby of the Community Center near the club display cases. Pick the tag of your choice, purchase the requested gift and return the gift unwrapped with the tag attached to their drop-off box by December 14. In addition, you can still make a monetary donation to either Project 150 or Serving Our Kids Foundation which will go toward their continued holiday programs. Make out your checks to the organization of your choice.
There will be many options to choose from this Season of Giving. Please consider donating to one of these groups; a small explanation of each nonprofit is listed below:
• Street Teens (who supports and assists homeless and at-risk teens)
• SAFE House (a domestic violence victim's shelter)
• Project 150 (who supports and assists homeless and at-risk teens)
• Serving Our Kids Foundation (supplying weekend food bags for needy grade school children)
Senior with Warm Hearts appreciates the community's effort in making this holiday season a little brighter for those organizations they assist. Their next meeting will be Thursday, November 17 at 11 a.m. in the Activity Room where they will make the tags for their Season of Giving Christmas Tree and decorate the display with the tags. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (discharged under honorable conditions).
It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, the U.S. public holiday in May Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service. Another military holiday in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military Women Veterans Day is recognized on June 12 by a growing number of U.S. states.
Spelling of Veterans Day
While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website states that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive is the official spelling "because it is not a day that 'belongs' to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”
