SEPTEMBER BRINGS COMMUNITY, EXPLORATION, AND A NEW SEASON

Labor Day falls on the first day of September this year, and just a few days later, the NFL kicks off its 106th season and Super Bowl LX will be played on February 8th. September also marks National Crime Prevention Week—a great time to recognize the efforts that keep Sun City Aliante safe. We're fortunate to have Neighborhood Watch, the Sun City Patrol, and Garda World Security all working to protect our community After all, it's that sense of community that makes Sun City truly special.

Beyond our community, there's a lot to explore right in our backyard. Within just two miles, you'll find the North Las Vegas Library, the Las Vegas Research Center, Ice Age Fossils State Park, the Tule Springs Fossils Beds National Monument, and Aliante Casino.

The North Las Vegas Library offers more than just books and eBooks. Their services include access to extensive online databases, reference materials, and even State Park passes. You can also check out Chromebooks and portable WiFi hotspots.

The Las Vegas Research Center, an extension of the University of Nevada, is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. They offer fresh fruits and vegetables for sale, grown right on site. Occasionally, expert gardeners are available to answer questions. Be sure to sign up for their email list to stay updated on weekly offerings.

The Ice Age Fossils State Park, spanning 315 acres, has been open for just over 18 months. Located nearby at 8660 N. Decatur Blvd. North Las Vegas, it offers a fascinating look into prehistoric life—several extinct mammals' fossils have been found there. Plus, the park includes walking trails to enjoy the outdoors.

Immediately north of our community lies the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. This 22,000+ acre site was preserved thanks in large part to the efforts of dedicated Sun City residents. It recently celebrated its 10th anniversary Currently, a 3-mile trail is open to the public, with a 6-mile path set to open soon. Visit protectorsoftulesprings.org to learn more—or even sign up to volunteer

Most of us know where Aliante Casino is—many can walk there! With four restaurants, a food court, a movie theater, and, of course, bingo, slots, and table games, it's a popular nearby destination. When you dine at the Farm, be sure to show your SCAL membership card for a 10% discount!

If you're up for a bit more travel, Floyd Lamb Park offers scenic walking trails. Gilcrease Orchard, open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m., sells seasonal produce, eggs, apple cider, and even breakfast. And for nature lovers, Mount Charleston, Lee Canyon, and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area are all close enough for a great day trip.

So, get out and explore! Enjoy the cooler weather as we welcome fall on September 22.

Sun City Aliante CAI Awards

Sun City Aliante, one of most sought-after 55+ communities in the Las Vegas Valley, has been named the Outstanding Large Association in Southern Nevada by the Community Associations Institute (CAI) six times since its transition from developer to owner control.

Discover the Rewards of Giving Back: The Benets of Volunteering for Seniors

First, I want to thank each and every person who serves as a committee member, club leader, special interest group champion and those others who utilize their time and talents to keep the “Sun Shining in Sun City Aliante.” In the August issue of The Breeze o

shared how homeowners in our community can positively contribute to the ongoing success of our Association by volunteering for the varied committees that are available in SCAL. As I read his comments and reflected on my own commitment to volunteer in our community, I wanted to add a few other reasons why giving back is so important as we get older

Volunteering is not just about giving your time and talents to others; it is also a fantastic way for seniors to enrich their own lives, both physically and mentally. Research continually highlights the positive impacts of volunteering, showcasing how it can boost your mood, improve your health, and strengthen your connections with your community

Here is why becoming a senior volunteer might be the perfect next step for you:

• Improved Mental Well-being: Volunteering offers a sense of purpose and accomplishment that can combat loneliness and isolation, which are common concerns for older adults. Engaging i n m e a n

significantly reduce symptoms of depression and foster a more positive outlook on life, according to the National Institute on Aging.

• Enhanced Physical Health: Studies show a correlation between volunteering and better physical health in seniors. Regular volunteering can involve physical activity, helping you stay active and potentially lowering your risk for chronic illnesses like heart disease and stroke, according to Carnegie Mellon University. For instance, a study found that older adults who volunteered for at least 200 hours annually reduced their risk of high blood pressure by 40 percent.

• Stronger Social Connections and Community: Volunteering provides a wonderful opportunity to meet new people who share your interests and values. This can lead to new friendships, expand your social network, and help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation. Organizations like AmeriCorps Seniors and AARP connect older adults with volunteer opportunities that can foster meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.

• Finding Purpose and Meaning: Retirement can bring a sense of loss for some, but volunteering can help seniors regain a strong sense of purpose and worth. Contributing to a cause you care about can be incredibly fulfilling and motivate you to adopt healthier habits, leading to a more satisfying life.

• Opportunities for Learning and Growth: Volunteering allows you to explore new interests, learn new skills, and stay mentally stimulated. Whether it is mentoring young people, assisting with administrative tasks, or participating in a community garden, you will be keeping your mind active and potentially discovering new Continue on Page 8

• Intergenerational Connections: Many volunteer programs, like the AmeriCorps Foster Grandparent Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters, pair seniors with children or younger adults, bridging the generation gap. These interactions allow seniors to share their wisdom and life experiences, while younger generations can offer fresh perspectives, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

• Flexibility to Fit Your Lifestyle: Volunteering can be as flexible as you need it to be. You can commit a few hours a week, a few times a month, or engage in short-term projects that fit your schedule. Remote or hybrid volunteer opportunities are also available, allowing you to contribute from home if mobility is a concern.

Volunteering presents a win-win situation for seniors, offering a rewarding way to

significant personal benefits. If you're looking for a way to stay active, expand your social circle, find a renewed sense of purpose, and make a real difference, consider exploring the diverse world of volunteer opportunities available to you. There are so many organizations near our community that look forward to having you work with them. Some of my favorites are Lighthouse Charities, Ronald McDonald House, Your Perfect Footwear, Hearts Alive Village, local hospitals and food distribution centers. There are also websites that can assist you in finding volunteer opportunities based on your interest, VolunteerMatch.org and Indeed.com. Volunteering is a proactive step towards a healthier, happier, and more engaged life in your golden years.

FROM THE DESK OF THE AGM

Hello, Sun City Aliante Residents!

Just a quick reminder to take a moment to look over your trees, bushes, and other landscaping to ensure everything is trimmed back and not blocking your address numbers. This is something that can easily go unnoticed during the growing season, but it's very important when it comes to the overall safety and accessibility of your home.

Address numbers must remain clearly visible from the street at all times. Emergency responders, delivery services, utility workers, and even visiting guests rely on being able to quickly and accurately identify your home. If branches or bushes are obstructing your address, it can create unnecessary delays or confusion—especially during emergencies when every second counts.

In addition to keeping address numbers visible, it's also important to keep

driveways, street corners, and walking paths. Overgrown vegetation in these areas can impact visibility for both drivers and pedestrians and pose a safety risk. Regular maintenance helps keep these areas clear, improves line of sight, and enhances the overall appearance of the neighborhood. It also allows outdoor lighting to function properly, which becomes even more important as we move into the shorter days and longer nights of fall and winter

While you're giving your landscaping some attention, this is also a good time to think about any exterior changes or improvements you may be planning for your property Whether it's a small update or a larger project, all exterior modifications must first be reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) before any work begins. This helps ensure that changes are consistent with community standards and that everyone is following the same process.

The ARC Guidelines are in place to help preserve the overall look and feel of the community and to protect property values for everyone. The application process is simple and the guidelines are easy to follow If you're not sure whether something requires ARC approval, we always recommend checking first. It's much easier to confirm in advance than to correct something later If you need a copy of the ARC Guidelines or assistance with the application process, the Community Center office is happy to help.

Thank you to everyone for continuing to take pride in your homes and helping to maintain the overall appearance and safety of Sun City Aliante. Even small efforts—like trimming back landscaping and following the ARC process—go a long way toward keeping our community attractive, functional, and enjoyable for all.

If you have any questions or need help with anything mentioned above, don't hesitate to reach out. We're always happy to assist.

Best regards,

Thank You for Checking in at the Front Desk and Scanning Your Membership Card

With everyone “scanning” in we now have a more accurate daily count of how many residents are using the Community Center. The Community Center is the “HUB” of all happenings in the Sun City Aliante Community, and the participation numbers are very impressive!

COUNCILMAN RICHARD CHERCHIO

One of the best parts of serving our community is getting to meet people who care about North Las Vegas as much as we do. This summer, I had the privilege of welcoming our neighbors from Nellis Air Force Base to City Hall. On July 2, we were joined by Col. Harley Thompson, Installation Commander Col. Jason J. Glynn, and several members of their team. I was also grateful to meet Jessica “JJ” Begnal, the Nellis Community Initiatives Officer, who helped make the visit possible.

We sat down with City staff from Public Works, Land Development, Economic Development & Government Affairs, and Community Services & Engagement to talk about two Department of Defense programs that could bring lasting benefits to our city and region.

The first, the Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program, allows military installations to partner with local governments and conservation organizations to protect land critical to their mission from incompatible development. It's a smart way to support Nellis' operations while encouraging thoughtful growth here at home.

federal funding for off-base infrastructure projects that directly support military value and quality of life. Cities across the country have used DCIP funds for projects like water system upgrades, sewer replacements, and improved base access points. Both programs o

collaboration—something I'm always excited to explore.

After our meeting, we enjoyed a short meet-and-greet with the Nellis delegation a

Independence Day celebration. It was a wonderful reminder of the strong connection between our city and the men and women who serve our country

That connection will grow even stronger later this month when I am honored to be inducted as an Honorary Commander for the 99th Civil Engineering Squadron at Nellis. I look forward to working alongside them, learning more about their mission, and finding new ways we can support one another

Of course, our community spirit isn't just about meetings—it's about coming together to have fun, too. On Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., I hope you'll join me at Aliante Nature Discovery Park for our 6th Annual Paws in the Park! We will have a live DJ, doggie trick-or-treating, a Doggie Paw-rade, and exciting contests including the Dog Costume Contest and Dog & Human Twinning Contest. Vaccinations and microchips will also be available on-site. To participate, please call Hearts

appointment starting on September 18th.

I'm always happy to hear from you—whether you have concerns, ideas, or just want to say hello. Please reach out anytime. You can also subscribe to the Community Connect City Council newsletter to stay up to date. Feel free to call me at 702-633-1194 or email cherchior@cityofnorthlasvegas.com. Together, we can keep North Las Vegas a place we're all proud to call home.

MONTHLY

BULLETIN:

So far in 2025, we've had very few burglaries in Sun City Aliante. But we still need everyone to do their part to keep our community safe. Top on the list is to keep your garage door closed. We have reports from residents who walk early in the morning and after dark who routinely see several open garage doors. It's obvious that someone forgot to close the door before going to bed and it was open all night. This is an open invitation to a burglar They drive the streets looking for easy access to our homes. lock the door from the garage into the service porch? Excuse the pun, but it would be a crime to be robbed because you forgot to lock up. If you are out and see your neighbors garage door open, be a good neighbor and notify them or Jim Blossey. This is the perfect reason to get to know your neighbors… we need to watch out for one another

During the day, don't forget to close the garage door while you're out in the back yard and out of sight. If you leave in your car to run an errand, make sure to put the garage door down, even if you have to drive around the block to doublecheck. It only takes a minute for someone to come in off the street uninvited, and help themself to your property

Typically, home burglars are looking for small objects with monetary value that they can grab quickly and resell easily Their favorites include jewelry, money or collectibles “hidden” in the drawers or closets of your master bedroom as well as iPads, laptops and electronic games. Plan a h e a d t o p r o t e c t y o u r h o m e a n d possessions from thieves.

Help minimize the risk of burglary and keep your home more secure with these suggested measures.

Windows and doors – Lock and secure all entry points. Believe it or not, it may be one of the simplest and most obvious precautions that homeowners tend to forget, and which burglars tend to exploit.

Maybe you've lived on the same street for decades and doubt it could ever happen to you. Maybe you're in a rush and skip the usual routine. Whatever the situation, remember to lock your doors and windows when you go out.

Garage Door – Keep your garage door closed when not in use. An open door is an invitation for thieves to step right and help themselves to tools, stored items… maybe even your car!

Strong door locks - Install deadbolt locks on all exterior

deadbolt that has been given a Grade 1 from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Security signage - Add a security sign to your yard or stickers to your door. It may not fool a burglar, but he may think twice about hitting your home.

Alarm system- Set up a home security system with cameras. You might even qualify for discounts on your homeowner's insurance.

Landscaping – Keep shrubs and bushes trimmed; so, burglars have fewer places to hide. If you're in the process of adding new landscaping, maybe opt to plant thorny bushes such as roses under and around windows. (Source: Excerpts from www.statefarm.com 6/23/2023)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT “GOING SOLAR”

Tuesday, September 2, 11 a.m.

Join Jorge Saal of ROBCO Electric on September 2 and get the facts you need to make an educated decision about going solar, especially because NV Energy prices are going up. You will learn:

How solar works with the “Grid” - The bidirectional meter measures your energy usage, and excess energy goes back to the “Grid” and gets credited to your account at 75% of the retail price.

Get a smaller bill with Net Metering - With net metering, NV Energy credits your power bill for the excess energy produced. What you send back wipes out what you use at 100% - a 1-for-1 ratio. Any extra production for the month is banked at 75% of the retail price. You'll use that credit to pay for any power you need from the grid, at night or during the summer

The Federal solar tax credit -The largest, non-income limited tax credit you can get. It's not a deduction. Credits reduce how much you owe in taxes. As of August 2022, the credit is 30% of the cost of your system. You can carry over unused credit to future tax years.

He will also discuss what “going solar” should cost and ways to finance it.

LAUGHING YOGA: WHAT IT IS AND DOES IT WORK?

Wednesday, September 10, 10 a.m.

psychological, and spiritual benefits Though laughing therapy has been used for decades, laughing yoga was discovered by Dr Madan Kataria, a family physician in Mumbai, India, in 1995.

Dr Kataria claims that laughing yoga will help lift your mood, reduce stress, strengthen your immune system, increase energy levels, improve your quality of life, and help you better manage hardship.

Laughing yoga, also known as laughter yoga, involves a series of movement and breathing exercises to promote deliberate laughter. It's used as a remedy for physical, psychological, and spiritual ailments, as advocates believe that intentional (simulated) laughter can provide benefits equal to those of spontaneous laughter (e.g., laughing at a joke). Dr. Katrina believes that learning to laugh on cue can help you deal with stressful situations by promoting optimism and positivity Since you cannot always rely on external influences to make you laugh, learning to laugh on your own can be a valuable tool.

Along with this, laughter yoga is believed to help you better manage stress through controlled breathing. This allows for greater uptake of oxygen, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system, your body's natural relaxation system (1Trusted Source).

Rosh Hashanah, means the "head of the year," and is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting/blasting." It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days, which usually occur in the early autumn. Rosh Hashanah observances include candle lighting in the evenings, and festive meals welcoming the sweetness of the year ahead, which often includes challah and apples dipped in honey Prayer services include the sounding of the ram's horn (shofar). Following Rosh Hashanah, the "Ten Days of Repentance" is o b s e r v e d , m a r k i n g t h e o p p o r t u n i t y

transgressions over the past 12 months.

Kol Nidre is a declaration chanted in the synagogue before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur, when fasting begins. The New Year represents a fresh start.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. It marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with fasting and intensive prayer, often spending much of the day in synagogue services.

Break-the-Fast is the meal eaten at the end of the fast day, which is enjoyed after the sounding of the shofar.

RESIDENT ELAINE JEFFERSON WITH SHAKA

After attending a Sun City Aliante seminar regarding animals, pets, and our well-being, I made a new year's resolution to adopt a pet on January 2, 2023. I came home from a visit to The Animal Foundation with my newfound friend, SHAKA, a Cane Corso Mastiff. He was 135 pounds of skin and bones and a tail that bled every time he wagged it.

SHAKA had Happy Tail Syndrome which occurs when a dog's vigorous tail wagging causes injury to the tip of the tail from hitting hard surfaces. SHAKA's happy tail made my house and vehicles look like a crime scene.

After trips to the vet and CVS, SHAKA was on the road to better health. He now weighs in at 158 pounds and looks intimidating.

Two incidents of bully's trying ~ to take advantage of an old woman (me) ~ prompted SHAKA to give would be intruders a reason to change their minds about continuing their approach. To add to his acts of heroism, he ran into the waters of Lake Mead to save me from drowning, an action that was caught on video and sent to the DOG ACADEMY, crediting SHAKA as my service dog. Now, we are for the most part inseparable. I encourage you to consider adopting a pet. They make GREAT companions.

LGBT + SOCIAL

September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Okay, I know what you're thinking; it just affects the LGBTQ+ community, and you would be partially correct. In 2022, 70% of the 31,800 new infections were among gay men, but 22% of the new cases were reported from heterosexual contact, and 7% were from intravenous drug use. But this day shines a vital spotlight on the intersection of two powerful narratives: aging and living with HIV As advances in treatment have transformed HIV from a terminal diagnosis into a manageable chronic condition, more adults are living longer, healthier lives. In fact, nearly half of all people living with HIV in the United States are aged 50 and older—a statistic that calls for nuanced understanding, compassionate care, and proactive policy.

This observance aims to combat stigma, advocate for age-appropriate care, and raise awareness about the unique challenges older adults with HIV face, including social isolation, ageism, and managing multiple health conditions. The intersectionality of aging and HIV often intensifies medical complexities; mental health concerns, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline are just a few of the issues that require tailored healthcare responses.

Healthcare providers and communities are encouraged to embrace holistic strategies that integrate HIV care with aging support systems. This includes ensuring access to culturally competent healthcare, promoting sexual health education for older adults, and encouraging routine HIV testing, especially for populations who may not see themselves at risk.

But awareness isn't just about statistics—it's about stories. Behind every data point is a person aging with dignity, resilience, and strength. National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day gives voice to those stories and invites us to reflect on how society can uplift those aging with HIV through empathy and equity Let's use September 18 as a catalyst for dialogue, inclusion, and change recognizing that aging with HIV isn't just possible, it's powerful.

SILVER NEEDLES AND THREADS

, a member of the Silver Needles Quilting Club. Kris was born in 1949. She met her husband, Jonny, at M

married in 1969. They have been married 58 years and have two wonderful children, Tina and Glen, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

One of the things that make Kris special is that in 1981 at age 32, while working as a bank teller, she suffered an aneurism that left her paralyzed on her right side and has greatly compromised her ability to walk.

However, that has not stopped this talented quilter from using her left hand and arm to make quilts. It is amazing how she is able to cut and piece together the varied fabrics for her quilts and work her sewing machine with only one hand and arm. When she joins the completed top of the quilt with the back, she either does all the stitching by hand or on her sewing machine. The members of the quilting group, along with Kris, make many quilts each year to donate to various charities. She has recently added knitting to her repertoire and has made some beautiful baby blankets.

The joy of singing the music of the holidays is really hard to describe. Our choir has grown over the years in quality and depth. We have taken on some music that many volunteer choirs avoid because of the difficulty of the piece. We work very hard to make it sound beautiful and simple. We love giving this gift to our community during the holidays.

We hope you will save the dates, December 12 and 13, and join us in celebrating the holidays with joy. Contact Holly Strasser if you are still interested in joining us. Her email is hollystrasser23@gmail.com and her phone number is 702-305-1768,

VETERAN'S AUXILIARY

Hello from the Veterans Auxiliary…we made it through another Las Vegas summer, and we're thrilled to be back to our work of supporting veterans in our Sun City community and the surrounding Las Vegas Valley. We resume our regular meetings on September 16 with lots of items to address for our upcoming events.

Please watch for information concerning about our upcoming events. We will have a Bake Sale in conjunction with the Art & Crafts Show at the Community Center Our Garage Sale will be held at the home of Co-Chair Pam Vonderohe at 3207 Kingbird Dr. Hope you come out to see what items are available for purchase. Remember, all proceeds from both activities go directly back to our club for disbursement to our many projects throughout the year.

Some of our members assisted with check-in and other jobs at Craig Ranch Park during the Military Appreciation Day It's always fun to welcome first responders, police, and active military to a day of fun and information with their families.

We look forward to our drives, projects and fund raisers, as we begin our new year of activities. Any resident of Sun City Aliante is welcome and encouraged to check out our meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Vista Room. Please remember to bring your membership card to check in at the Front Desk. See you soon!

VETERAN'S OF SUN CITY

Welcome Home Aliante Neighbors. I trust you had a fun summer, filled with wonderful new memories! Although the Club did not have monthly meet-ups during the summer, Board members and others were hard at work finalizing events and services for the upcoming year.

By popular demand, we are displaying flags along the streets entering Sun City Aliante from Elkhorn and Aliante Parkway 24/7, 365 days a year as a visual reminder of community support for veterans and those serving our country I am proud to say: We Are a Veteran Community!

We will continue to display flags in the Community Center parking lot for special occasions to include the 4th of July, Flag Day, Veteran's & Memorial Days.

We are honored that Veterans before us started this program over 10 years ago. Of course, this is not without cost. The Adopt-A-Flag sponsorship program is an easy way for you to support this community activity For more information on sponsorship or the purchase of a Made-in-America flags, poles and accessories, please text Scott Erickson at 803-546-2913 or email: BearKeeper1@gmail.com.

We'll even deliver and post your Flag for you!!!!

Secretary Pat Goeppinger and I were pleased to attend the Veteran's Club of Sun City Anthem's “Ice Cream Social” …..WOW, Bravo Zulu Club President Frank Bianca!!!! HMMMMMM, could there be an Ice Cream Social in our future? Text/email with your thoughts please.
