Hello Friends,

This article will be short and, hopefully, address the open Board positions. This year there are 4 open Board seats and we have 9 residents applying for our Board. There will be a candidate forum this month where all attendees will have an opportunity to evaluate each candidate.

I encourage as many as possible to attend the March 9th forum and pay close attention to what is answered to issues that are important to all who live here. Your vote is your opportunity to shape the direction your community will take in the future.

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY TO ALL!

Here is a little history on this special day.

It was emigrants, particularly to the United States, who transformed St. Patrick's Day into a largely secular holiday of revelry and celebration of all things Irish. Cities with large numbers of Irish immigrants, who often wielded political power, staged the most extensive celebrations, which included elaborate parades.

Boston held its first St. Patrick's Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has colored the river green to mark the holiday (Although blue was the color traditionally associated with St. Patrick, green is now commonly connected with the day.) Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green”—sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock, the Irish national plant, in the l a p e l C o r n e d b e e f a n d cabbage are associated with the holiday, and even beer is s o m e t i m e s d y e d g r e e n t o celebrate the day. Although s o m e o f t h e s e p r a c t i c e s eventually were adopted by the Irish themselves, they did so largely for the benefit of tourists.

St. Patrick's Day, feast day (March 17) of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 CE to convert the Irish to Christianity By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Many legends grew up around him—for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts.

Enjoy you day celebrating with family, friends and loved ones!

There are many reasons I choose to volunteer as a member of the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. Therefore, I humbly submit to you that my goal is simple…I want to serve to ensure that the community I care about continues to be a place where we all can enjoy this season of our lives knowing that our association is financially solvent, able to provide highquality amenities and provide opportunities to learn and explore. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am Mark Benz. I currently serve on the Association's Property and Grounds Committee, and have experience as a Board member in another community association. I earned a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering, and after 28 years, retired from Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co., as staff to the Chief Engineer My wife, Jannet and I have enjoyed more than three years here. Our family has had property in the Valley since the 1970s. If elected to the Board, I hope to help to: Keep our community in terms of common amenities compared to similar nearby communities, improve Board responsiveness, encourage upward communication from homeowners and Committees, and

insert a bit of common sense into our finances.

Community Associations are formed to ensure that the property values of owner's homes, and shared assets increase over time, to all participants' benefit. To reach this goal, Association Boards must be forward-looking, to ensure any community remains desirable, and viable. Facilities and amenities must be maintained, and updated effectively so that when new communities appear nearby, ours remains competitive, and not downgraded in the eyes of current and potential owners. This a primary Board responsibility We need to positively consider and implement reasonable physical and policy improvements. I think the Board should also be more transparent with homeowners, and treat Association funds, our money, as if it was their own.

Board and Committee members are volunteers, with a strong self-interest, and yet work for all homeowners. Everyone should have a voice, and that voice must be heard and valued by the Board and Committees. No one can be an expert on everything. My experience is that more input results in better, more accepted decisions. Our Board should solicit and listen to our 40+ Committee members and homeowner's ideas, and openly discuss policy and/or physical community improvements. Several of my own amenity, as well as a Club's safety improvement request, for simple, low-cost updates were rejected out-of-hand, with little-to-no discussion or rationale. I encourage you to ask questions and provide suggestions. Please discuss via markdbenz@yahoo.com.

Regarding Association finances, consider last year the Board voted to increase our

EDWARD E. ERNEST

My wife, Jill, and I first moved to Sun City Aliante in March of 2017 and became full time residents July of 2018. I joined the Table Tennis Club and later became club president. I have also joined Euchre, Pickleball, and Technology Clubs with a little Club DIAL added in. In 2020, I was appointed to the Finance Committee. I was elected to the Board of Directors in May 2022 In December 2023, I earned my Dedicated Community Association Leader (DCAL) certificate.

I graduated from Purdue University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. I have worked for several engineering companies in multiple engineering capacities. I retired from Hubbell Electric Products in December 2016 after 31 years of service. During my

FELTON HYCHE

I have been an owner/resident since 2008. I held several career positions as an executive with Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, Frito Lay, Pillsbury and as V.P of the Queen Mary I feel that I understand the importance of teamwork and accomplishing goals. I also feel that any association could always use a strong voice, mind and conviction.

I have a feel for compassion for people, causes and the need to have an ear that is open to all. At this time I feel that I can

KATHY MARTIN

My name is Kathy Martin and I'm excited to announce my candidacy for a position on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. I'm looking forward to working with other board members and volunteers as well as the management team in an effort to continuously make our community a great place to live.

For those of you that don't know me I have lived in Las Vegas since 1979 but just recently moved to Sun City Aliante with my husband Tim. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here and are thrilled we bought in this community I work remote for an optical lab Essilor Luxottica, my previous job was working for a workers comp insurance company as an auditor, and prior to that was elected to three terms in the Nevada State Assembly

M y n a m e i s R a y A P a c k o w s k i M y w i f e , P a t r i c i a Williamson, and I reside at 7640 Homing Pigeon St. in the Sun City Aliante. We recently moved into the community.

Prior to that, we lived in the Montagne Marron Community Association, a community which is a subdivision of the Southern Highlands Master HOA Community

I currently work in the Financial and Credit industry. I have been involved in Banking, Credit, Credit Fraud and Credit Operations for over forty-five (45) years, working for companies such as Citibank, National Bank of Marin, Sally

dues, the MINUTES later voted to spend $7500 on a self-congratulatory party On operations, Board Members complain about SW Gas and NV Energy raising rates. Our poll has a builder-installed roof solar water heater. It's been inoperable for some years, never replaced, and called out in our 2022 Reserve Study We are paying $$$ for gas alone to heat the pool now, even when it's closed. The Reserve Study should be on our website, for easy review by owners.

Again, my goals are that the Board improve: responses to homeowner concerns, committee effectiveness, amenity updates, and financial prudence. If anything above resonates, I would appreciate your vote. Thank you.

time there, I was a project engineer, product engineer, project manager, engineering manager and plant manager My duties included design of our manufacturing equipment, implementation and management of capital budget, design of new products, management of industrial engineering and management of a satellite manufacturing facility

I am also past president of a homeowners association in North Carolina. Our association was new and I chaired a subcommittee to establish our covenants, conditions and restrictions.

Sun City Aliante is a wonderful place to live. I believe I have much that I can contribute bringing the skills I developed from my work experience to building and maintaining the culture of excellence for our community Therefore, I ask that you consider voting for me in the upcoming election.

contribute to the success of the board and more importantly to the community I look forward to your response and hope that I can serve.

I believe it is important for board members to understand the budget process, manage the association's finances and have an understanding of the Nevada Revised Statutes. I served on the board at my last community in Mountains Edge also managed by First Service Residential. But I believe what is more important is to listen to the members ideas, discuss and carry out those ideas so we all have a community that we love and feel a part of.

I believe my background in financial auditing, serving in the legislature, previously serving on an HOA board, and currently working in customer service for an optical makes me the best candidate for the job.

Therefore, I know what this job entails and believe I have the necessary experience to do it well. If you like what I have to offer please vote for me. Thank you!

Mae, Fingerhut and Alliance Data Systems.

I served on the Board of Directors (BOD) for Montagne Marron Community Association for the past eight (8) years, and I have served as Board President for the past five (5) years. This community is managed by FirstService Residential; so, I am very familiar with their polices and procedures. I am proud to say that during my tenure, the Montagne Marron community has seen several upgrades, including the renovation of both entrances to the community, the addition and upgrading of lighting at both gates to the community, upgrades to the community pool and repainting of all homes in Dupre Village (a subdivision of the Montagne Marron Community).

I was also responsible for overseeing the conversion of the Montagne Marron Community to a water-smart venue with new desert landscaping.

All of these projects and upgrades were completed with minimal increases in Homeowner Assessments. I also worked closely with FirstService in managing the Operating, Capital and Reserve funds for the community

I was born and raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with degrees in Economics and Industrial Relations. Over the years, I have had extensive experience in managing all aspects of credit operations, setting

ORLANDO ROMERO

My name is Orlando Romero. I have been a resident of Sun City Aliante for over 17 years. I have seen a complete failure of our management company, board of directors and maintenance workers.

With the constant closures of our pool area most recently closed down by the health department for over a month, upsetting hundreds of homeowners. I have seen Buckets put out to catch dripping water and black tar leaking from the roof, for years, with the issue never being resolved, to equipment in the workout areas out of order, remotes not working its evident there's no maintenance inspection

EDWARD “ED” SLOMAN

As a current homeowner retiring here in January 2015, I have enjoyed being involved in our community

I have previously served on the Finance Committee for 2 y e a r s , w h i c h e n a b l e d m e t o u n d e r s t a n d h o w o u r community and finance/budget work. I was elected to the Board of Directors in 2018, serving as a Treasurer and again in 2020 serving as Vice President. During my first term on the Board, I earned my DCAL (Dedicated Community Leadership Certificate). After my term ended, I have been appointed to the Finance Committee (2022) after my four years on the Board.

I left the Board after 4 years as I needed a well-deserved break. COVID took its toll on many of us, and that, coupled with the task of oversight of the expansion/renovation project which lasted 18 months was very taxing. My construction background that as well of Board member Hendrick needed both our combined experiences to get the magnificent building we now all enjoy

MARK SMITH

I have served continuously on the Board of Directors since I was first elected in November, 2006. I am the longest serving board member in the history of Sun City Aliante (SCAL) and have held the offices of President, Vice-President and Secretary I am currently serving as Vice-President once again. SCAL won the Community Associations Institute's Award as the Best Large Scale Home Owners Association (HOA) in Southern Nevada for the first time while I was president. I hold a DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certification from CAI.

Before moving to SCAL, all of our residents, both long term and those recently arrived, look around the Las Vegas Valley and decided that SCAL was the HOA where you wanted to reside. YOU CHOSE TO LIVE HERE BECAUSE YOU LIKED WHAT YOU SAW You made that decision for a number of reasons, including our financial integrity, our amenities, our governance, our beautiful location, our livability, our management and our wonderful residents.

I have been part of every decision over the past seventeen (17) plus years that has made SCAL so special and what it is today – the best HOA in the state and the place you call home. The key to any successful home owners association and the fiduciary obligation of every Board member is to ensure the association's financial integrity, that everything is done in the best interests of the Association, that our property values are maintained and enhanced, and that everyone is treated equally and fairly Every decision that I have made as a director has been made with that responsibility in mind.

We are financially secure, our property values keep going up, everyone is treated fairly and equally, and all of the Board's decisions are based upon what is in the best

up banks and overseeing Regional Credit Operations for several banks.

Now, as a Sun City Aliante resident, I would very much like to continue my community involvement. I believe that it is important to invest time and energy into your community. I am aware that I have had the privilege of moving into an awardwinning community, named the best large HOA in Southern Nevada.

I would consider it an honor to serve on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. I am therefore asking for your support in the upcoming election for the 2024 Board of Directors.

done on these on a regular basis. Our dues are constantly going up however the upkeep of our community center goes unchanged. Sun City Summerlin has successfully self managed their community for over 20 years. I think it is time for us to look into Sun City Aliante becoming a self managed community, terminating the management company as we are paying for our community to be well maintained not temporary quick fixes that are never actually repaired.

I possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Planning. My experience includes working for a City Planning Agency, President of the Homebuilding Company, Executive with a Civil Engineering company which included processing plans for Commercial and residential projects. Other related experience includes that of City P l a n n i n g C o m m i s s i o n e r, C o u n t y P l a n n i n g C o m m i s s i o n e r, F l o o d C o n t r o l Commissioner, Airport Commissioner, Hospital Board of Directors, and Rotary Club President.

I feel that I still have many more ideas and thoughts to continue to make our community greater We have many challenges as we continue to take care of our aging infrastructure, attempting to reel the high cost of living that has plagued us over the past number of years. I enjoy being part of the leadership team that will take our community to the next level.

I feel I'm an outside the box thinker I like to problem solve and I believe it showed in my previous four years on the Board. I would be honored to serve our community again and look forward to gaining your support.

interest(s) of the Association.

I am arguably the most outspoken and forceful speaker at Board meetings. I believe it is essential for every director to voice her/his opinion on matters and not sit quietly at a Board meeting while letting others have their say People may not always agree with me, or like my presentation, but everyone will know where I stand on issues and why I feel that way I was raised in New York City and say what's on my mind New York style.

I graduated from Hunter College in New York City and received my law degree from Brooklyn Law School. I served as Principal Law Clerk to several justices of the New York State Supreme Court from January 1976 to June 1986. In July 1986 my family and I moved to South Floridia where I served as assistant state attorney for 20 years, first under Janet Reno and then under Katherine Fernandez Rundle. While an assistant state attorney I specialized in prosecuting domestic violence and elderly abuse cases for over six years and then public corruption cases for over ten years. I was also a member of the Hate Crimes Committee which determined if an individual case met the criteria for being prosecuted as a hate crime.

My wife and I contracted to buy our home here in SCAL in October 2002, the second day the office was open, and closed in May 2003. We lived here full time since July 2006.

I have given everything I have to making SCAL the best HOA in Nevada and I believe that I can continue to contribute to our community and keep it the best HOA there is. I have brought, and will continue to bring, common sense, practicality, experience, history, integrity and a keen sense of ethics to the Board.

I most humbly and respectfully ask for your support and vote in the coming election.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS

I attended for the first time Club DIAL's Lunar New Year celebration last month and I had a terrific time. I was personally invited by Ms. Lina M. in January, and I simply couldn't say No as she gave me over threeweeks advance notice. So, on my Saturday afternoon, I drove 31 miles to see homeowners at the community party When I arrived, the Vista Room was decorated and black linen round tables were set up for dining. Everyone was dressed to impress and looked like they were having a fabulous time. There was a fashion show, performances by the Steppers, and lots of line dancing. Some women even changed wardrobes a couple times.

The back tables were reserved for food, and oh boy, there were a plethora of dishes. It was cool to see everyone mingling and laughing. I rarely get to put my hair down and just have fun in social gatherings; it's not my preference. I am low key, one or two couples gathering for an intimate dinner for deep, insightful and, often times, hilarious conversations. I feel typically out of place in big social settings. I know, kind of weird, given that I'm Filipina with a Latin American husband. We're kind of known to be the life of the party, especially, if there's karaoke and food involved.

Sun City Aliante is diverse, vibrant, and overall fun place to live. The Lunar New Year party reminded me of that. Attendants were from all walks of life and moved from across the country The people who join clubs and serve on organizations or committees are socially adept. Trust me when I say, that's not always true for associations. There are people within communities that dislike each other so much that they are spiteful towards one another, and association managers become babysitters. Thank goodness, we only see a minuscule fraction of that here.

This community is aging and

aturally the people too; many new homeowners are younger and coming with a different energy, ideas, and culture. That is fine and it is welcomed. However, the seasoned homeowners who have lived here for more than a decade are just as great. They are full of wisdom, principled, and genuinely value teamwork and cooperation.

It is exciting to see how our community is evolving. The upcoming election has nine candidates seeking votes to fill four positions. I urge you to take the time to get to know the candidates first-hand, not merely take word-of-mouth as your sole source of information. Similarly to our nation's election, the association candidates may be campaigning by putting up signs. Just so you know, that is allowed. Association election signs may only be placed in the FRONT YARD of the lot (one sign per candidate). Signs may only be staked on the ground and may not be hung from or placed upon foliage, trees, walls, or any other object. Please see the Design Guidelines for the size allowed.

I know it may be silly to remind you of this given that it should be common sense. But please be respectful, courteous, and practical. I actually have a tshirt that says, “Common Sense is so rare these days, it should be classified as a Superpower.” This community can be diverse and still function in harmony It takes all of us.

If you have any questions or need any clarifications, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or at assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us.

I want to wish you all a Happy St. Patrick's! Irish or not, everyone loves a reason to celebrate, enjoy green beer and hope for the “Luck of the Irish.” Maybe, you will even find a three-leaf clover, considered by the Celts as a sacred plant that symbolized the arrival of spring. I also wanted to share a favorite Irish saying: “May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far.”

Celebrate “The Luck of the Irish” with a St. Patrick's Luncheon hosted by Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick on Wednesday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m. As always, following a delicious lunch, she will discuss current issues of interests to residents.

It is important to remember that your vote counts in the upcoming election for the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors! COUNCILMAN

WARD 4 RICHARD CHERCHIO

Hello Sun City Residents,

I want to share with all of you some important information regarding a few complaints my office has received about noisy mufflers. A modified exhaust system on a motor vehicle that creates excessive noise is a violation of North Las Vegas Municipal Code 10.40.040, which prohibits a vehicle owner from modifying the exhaust system in a way that will amplify or increase the noise above that emitted by the originally installed muffler. Not following the code is a civil infraction that is punishable with a fine not to exceed $250.

I encourage all North Las Vegas drivers to be respectful of the community and not intentionally create excessive noise by making illegal exhaust modifications. But what do you do if you see or experience what you believe is excessive vehicle noise? Call 3-1-1 and give the operator as much information as possible, such as the vehicle make and model, color, license plate number, date, time and location.

Another issue that seems to be cropping up is mailbox break-ins. This is a serious issue and is handled at the federal level by Congressman Steven Horsford's office, who represents our area. If you've experienced a mailbox break-in, please report it by going to https://horsford.house.gov/, selecting Services, then Help with a Federal Agency, and Submit Your Request. After being prompted to enter your address, select US Post Office as the federal agency you would like help with, and enter your information there This could be vandalism of mailboxes, broken mailboxes, or anything pertaining to the postal service. Issues are handled directly by people in administration for the post office and they should contact you directly

I am excited to share that the City of North Las Vegas has a crime prevention service, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (C.P.T.E.D.) that is available, free of charge, for businesses and homes. If you request a free C.P.T.E.D. Security Survey, a trained Crime Prevention specialist will conduct an on-site walkthrough of your property to identify ways to make it more secure. It is based on the premise that proper design and effective use of a built environment can lead to reduced crime and a better quality of life. If you would like to request a Security Survey for your home, call the North Las Vegas Police Department Community Services Division at (702) 633-1808.

Finally, if you haven't had a chance yet to go out and visit the Ice Age Fossils State Park, I encourage you to do so! Located at 8660 N. Decatur Blvd., it is a great resource and wonderful place to take your four-legged family members out for a beautiful walk as you learn about the mammals that roamed our valley during the Pleistocene epoch.

NEIGHBORHOOD

March is the time of year when people start to think about their summer travels. Snowbirds will be gone most of the summer and other residents may be gone for a month, a week or even just a few days. No matter how long you're away, you need to prepare ahead of time.

The first thing you should do is get to know your neighbors. They are the ones that will more than likely notice what goes on around your home while you're away If you are lucky to have a Block Captain, let them know you'll be out of town and how to contact you, if necessary If you're not sure if you have a Block Captain, attend the March 21, 2024 Neighborhood Watch meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the Community Center and we will let you know.

Here's another suggestion. A lot of homeowners are hesitant to give a key to anyone. Purchase a lock box and attach it to the gas line meter on the side of the house or the security door handle if you have one. Put your house key in it and if a problem comes up, someone you trust can contact you. You will want to give that person your phone number and they can give you the lock box code, if needed. Lock boxes are available at stores like Home Depot or Lowes.

At the March meeting, we will have a handout with a list of things to do before you leave on your summer getaway We will also discuss the latest community crime map All

Remember, March 21 at 4:30 p.m.

YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPEN?

The HOA covenants state that “each owner and/or occupant shall maintain his/her garage in a manner which ensures that the garage door is capable of regular and normally accommodating as many vehicles as it was originally designed to accommodate. Garages shall be kept closed at all times, except as reasonably required for ingress to and egress there from.”

This is an important statement as it serves several purposes throughout the community One purpose that concerns the Sun City Aliante Patrol is the safety and security of you and your belongings. Two examples:

1. At approximately 4:30 a.m. a resident opened his garage door to take the dog for a walk. The resident had to step back inside the residence for a minute and when he returned to the garage, he noticed a vehicle parked at the end of his driveway, occupied, engine running and door ajar At the sight of the homeowner, the vehicle immediately fled the area. One can make an assumption that a theft or entrance to the residence was about to occur

2. At approximately 2 p.m. an unknown person rang the ring doorbell of a residence. The homeowner had his garage door open at the time. Upon answering the ring doorbell, the unknown person said something to the effect that the homeowner had his DMV paperwork. After that weird statement the person went back to his car which was parked at the end of the homeowner's driveway and left the area. One can make an assumption that this was a ruse to see if anyone was home so the unknown person could enter the garage or residence to commit a theft.

There are several other suspicious incidents that concern open garage doors. As a homeowner/renter you have to ask yourself if having an open garage door is worth the theft of your personal property or entry to your home by nefarious persons.

There are devices on the market that will sound an alarm or blinking light inside your house about 15 minutes after you get home if you have left your garage door open. If you are forgetful, this is a wise investment.

Recently the North Las Vegas Police Department drove through our community and observed over 40 garage doors open or somewhat raised. Please close your garage door It is a simple task and will offer you please of mind.

For information regarding the Sun City Aliante Patrol, contact the Patrol Chairman Tony Swat at nozs@aol.com.

LEARN THE MANY BENEFITS OF TAI CHI

Additional Class Now Available

We have added an additional Tai Chi class to our Fitness Schedule beginning Thursday, March 7 at 8 a.m. You now have two options to attend this popular class: Tuesdays or Thursdays at 8 a.m.

Jody O'Connell our instructor specializes in teaching Tai Chi, a gentle form of exercise that can help maintain your strength, flexibility, and balance.

She has practiced Tai Chi since 1996 and studied with Master Tung Kai Ying at the Academy of Tai Chi Chuan in West Los Angeles since 2002. She has taught Tai Chi in Las Vegas for the past seven years.

Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion”, but it could be called “medication in motion.” In this low-impact exercise, you go through a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention on your body sensations. There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. It can help you maintain strength, flexibility, and balance and could be the perfect activity for the rest of your life.

" M y m a i n f o c u s i s helping my students to improve their balance, c o o r d i n a t i o n , m e m o r y, and reduce stress. I want students to find Tai Chi an easy activity in a peaceful environment and strive to help them relax and have fun in my classes," explained Jody.

"According to many doctors, Tai chi can be a very effective exercise for older adults. It rests and refreshes the mind at the same time that it exercises and conditions the body. Also, Tai Chi does not require any s p e c i a l e q u i p m e n t ~ j u s t l o o s e fi t t i n g c l o t h e s , l i g h t w e i g h t , comfortable flat shoes," continued Jody "Although Tai chi is slow and gentle and doesn't leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness- muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and to a lesser degree aerobic conditioning."

The benefits of Tai Chi include:

• Improving balance and coordination

• Improving muscle strength & flexibility

• Promoting deep breathing

• Reducing bone loss

• Improving lower body and leg strength

• Helping arthritis pain

• Reducing blood pressure

• Accumulating energy by releasing endorphins rather than depleting them

• Enhancing mental capacity and concentration

Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people confined in wheelchairs or recovering from surgery Jody offers Tai Chi classes now at the Community Center every Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. A Fitness Class fee of $3 applies. Find out whether the practice of Tai Chi may be just what you need to strengthen your mind and body for the rest of your life. Join Jody for an amazing Tai Chi experience.

CONGRATUL ATIONS TO BOARD TREASURER NANCY PRINCE FOR RECEIVING CAI'S 2023 DEDICATED LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Every year the Community Associations Institute (CAI) presents awards to people who have contributed to, have been active in and volunteered for the Nevada Chapter of the CAI. This year CAI presented the celebrated Award of Excellence for the Southern Nevada Dedicated Leader of the Year (DCAL) to Sun City Aliante Board Treasurer Nancy Prince for her outstanding service to the Nevada Chapter at their Annual Gala held at The Smith Center on February 2, 2024.

In addition, both Nancy and Sun City Aliante President Warren Geller were nominated for 2023 Southern Nevada Association Board Member of the Year

“I am pleased and honored to receive this award,” said Nancy. “It is a recognition that is awarded for the education and time that it I have invested in the CAI Nevada Chapter I believe I received this honor because I achieved the Advanced DCAL designation this year and because of the many hours of volunteer work I have done for our Chapter during 2023.”

During the past year, Nancy served on the Chapter's Membership and Legacy Committees. “Our goal on the Membership Committee is to meet and exceed CAI's national standards of retaining membership. This requires attending monthly meetings and reaching out to retain current or expired members, recruit new members and reinforce the benefits of being a member of CAI,” she explained.

As vice chair of CAI's Legacy Committee, she is involved in interviewing long-standing members to create a legacy for the Nevada Chapter “We record and transcribe the interviews and place them on line, both the audio and printed transcriptions. The highlight of this committee will be publishing the interviews in a book with photos for each of the interviewees,” Nancy said.

What is the purpose of CAI? “CAI is one of the largest membership organizations dedicated to building better Homeowner's Association (HOA) communities, which has 60 United States and International Chapters, ” explained Nancy. “Their 30,000 plus membership includes volunteers, who are typically homeowner Board members, community managers, and business partners who provide goods and services to community associations. CAI truly advances excellence

Nancy is a strong advocate for CAI and believes the organization is a great resource for Board members. “When I joined the Board, all the DCAL classes were in person and only offered once a year Now, all of the Board member classes are offered 2-3 times per year on Zoom.” Although she does not serve on the CAI's legislative committee, Nancy strongly supports the work they do. CAI advocates on behalf of HOA communities and legislators, who are the regulatory bodies of HOAs. “This is very important explained Nancy. ”The Legislative Action Committee works with legislators to identify good bills that support the functions of HOAs and those that might be detrimental to HOAs.”

Nancy is kept busy serving as Board Treasurer for Sun City Aliante. “The primary purpose of our Board is to make educated decisions that are good for the community as a whole,” she explained. “CAI contributes to that by offering education, with the thought that an educated Board member makes good, informed decisions.” Her biggest challenge is having enough time! She has a passion for American History and a bigger passion for family history She is also a very busy Grandma…she is blessed with seven grandchildren and takes them on summer trips to various historical places such as, Washington, D.C. Congratulations, Nancy! Thank you for all you do to make our community a great place to live and work.

EMBRACE THE ART OF SAVING $$$ WHEN PLANNING YOUR TRAVELS

As March rolls in, so does the spirit of thriftiness, and what better way to embrace the art of saving than by channeling the thrifty Irish? In a month synonymous with frugal celebrations and a touch of luck, it's the perfect time for the well-educated and budget-conscious traveler to explore the world without breaking the bank. Just as the Irish proverb suggests, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything,” our journey begins with a shared chuckle and a commitment to rest easy, knowing we're about to embark on a budget-friendly adventure.

1. Book Early – If you know where you want to go take advantage of Booking things like Airfare and lodging early If you have credit card points and miles lingering you want to book 330 days in advance when you can get the most for those airline miles. Airlines are not required to offer the same redemption value year after year; so, it is best to use these up immediately Helpful websites for following Credit Card Airline plans are https://thepointsguy.com and https://www.nerdwallet.com.

2. Look for FREE activities - Because we know a large portion of our travel expenses will be spent on transportation and lodging, look to save on Activities.

• National Parks have FREE days- there are 5 remaining in 2024April 20, 2024 a Saturday so places like Yosemite, Bryce, and o t h e r s l o d g i n g w i l l b o o k q u i c k l y - p l a n n o w ! https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/fee-free-parks.htm

• June 19, 2024 (Wednesday) Midweek can be more affordable but June is always very busy in the National Parks, check out some of the lesser visited parks or plan to get up early!

• August 4, 2024 (Sunday) for many August is also the last of the Family vacations before school starts again.

• September 28, 2024 (Saturday) Autumn is just starting and this can be a lovely time to get outside and explore!

• November 11, 2024 (Monday) This is also Veterans Day so many working individuals will have this as a holiday

Museums that are connected to Bank of America also have Free Days - check the website for the participating list in various states from New Hampshire's Currier Museum of Art, The Denver Botanic Gardens, Art Museum and even the Aquarium at Niagara Falls the list is pretty good.

- https://

on-us-partners

- Walking tours- https://freetoursbyfoot.com/

Free Tours - check the City you are interested in booking a Free Tour in and select something that interests you, these are often a good first time activity to acquaint yourself with the City and of course at the end you can ask for recommendations on local restaurants, or other local events that you might only find out about by interacting with someone who lives in the area. The quality of these tours can be quite good as often these are passionate historians, locals or students studying to get licensed to lead tours. Read the recommended tipping guidelines and tip at the end what you feel the tour was worth to you.

Local Libraries - Local libraries can often be a great resource, go to the website while you are in your trip planning stages, libraries host book signings, local walks, San Francisco, Los Angeles and others all offer some unique guided tours both inside the Library and outside. Do a search to find these- here are a couple I have personally enjoyed- Los Angeles : https://www.lapl.org/branches/central-library/docenttours-central-library

- Boston: https://www.bpl.org/art-tours/

3. Save on Lodging- Use alternatives like Airbnb, or check sites on

Facebook if you are a solo traveler- there are host a traveler pages. There is also a club called Evergreen Club that has been written about in major newspapers and I personally have a friend who hosted a traveler or two. These are opportunities to save some money but also meet locals and maybe even share a meal together and get a deeper appreciation for the town or city you are visiting.

- Evergreen Travel Club- https://www.evergreenclub.com/

4. Dining - This is another area of opportunity and one I find I use more and more to stretch my travel dollars to use the money to see museums, entry fees and take educational walking tours. Check that your lodging has a microwave, or small refrigerator or even a hot plate. Some hotels, bed and breakfasts have small kitchenette areas which allow you to make a meal in your room. Pack re-usable utensils or small containers so if you eat a larger meal you can take left-overs for later Split your meal, I often find restaurant portions are large so by sharing I can cut my dining bill in half. Eating your larger meal early in the day is another way to lower your expenses, check for Happy Hours, or even look for local markets, or small walk up stands to pick up items for a picnic lunch or evening meal in your room.

Also check at the Front desk when you check in – many local lodgings partner with hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts offering discounts. Even walk around the lobby you often find maps, and other local brochures with coupons! I have even found discounted tickets for local attractions on these tourist maps. Don't be afraid to look and ask if businesses will discount for AAA members, or AARP or Veterans, or even just by paying in cash.

Googlemaps is a good resource to get an overview of what is in walking dist

VETERAN'S CLUB

Hello everyone, I hope you had a memorable Valentines Day. Also, I hope you enjoyed the Super Bowl game. We held a very successful pancake breakfast on February 17, along with our Veteran's Auxiliary bake sale. We collected ballots at meeting on February 20 for the election of new officers. We will announce the results in the next issue of The Breeze.

This month I would like to remind fellow veterans and members of Sun City Aliante that we have a program called Adopt-a-Flag, which allows us to display flags periodically during the year at the appropriate times. If you would like to participate in this program, we invite you to make a $40 donation to purchase a new flag and pole. In turn, for your generosity, your name will be prominently displayed on a plaque which hangs in the Community Center, and you will receive a letter of recognition, along with the Veteran's Club sincere appreciation.

We greatly appreciate everyone's assistance when we display the American flags on holidays, such as the Fourth of July Showing our flags and demonstrating our patriotism is part of what makes our community so awesome.

In addition, we offer you the opportunity to purchase a Memorial Brick for an active or retired service member, deceased veteran, or a loved one. The bricks are engraved and enshrined in front of the Veteran's Monument Memorial located in front of the Community Center If you would like more information regarding either of these programs, please call Rick Folle at 702-969-6556.

Sincerely,

VETERAN'S AUXILIARY

The Veterans Auxiliary held its regular meeting January 16. Guest speaker, Diane Meier, from Pups, Prisoners & Patriots, updated members on their program of rescuing dogs from shelters and taking them to Lovelock Correctional Facility in northern Nevada, where prisoners work with the animals. After training, these dogs are placed in homes with veterans and first responders that are seeking a canine companion. It is a great program that benefits all concerned!

The Auxiliary & Veterans Clubs held their annual Pancake Breakfast Saturday, February 17. This is always an enjoyable event and the clubs thank the community for their support.

GARAGE SALE! The Auxiliary will hold a garage sale this spring on the Aliante Community Garage Sale weekend April 13 & 14. Please consider donating your items to the Auxiliary for this event. All proceeds go to support the Auxiliary projects such as Nellis Active Military Support, Help USA and Harvison House.

Anyone wanting to support our veterans and military and is interested in joining the Auxiliary is welcome. You do NOT have to have a veteran or military family member to join! Regular meetings of the Veterans Auxiliary are held the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Vista Room at 9 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19. For further information, please email Julie Tomlin at jtomlin55@msn.com or 208320-8115 or Hjordy Wagner at hwizwag@gmail.com or 715-529-9728.
