MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A GOOD BOARD MEMBER?

Dear Residents:

I saw this article and the message it contains is exactly the qualities a successful Board member should have.

Being a board director requires a certain amount of nous, intelligence and compassion If you're an aspiring board director, you might be wondering whether you'll have what it takes. But as long as you have these attributes (or are willing to learn them), you can become an effective board director

1. Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EQ) is potentially more important than intellectual intelligence (IQ). EQ is defined simply as having the ability to monitor both your own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information as a guide for your own thinking and behavior When you know yourself and how you connect with others, you are in a much better position to handle stressful situations and make better decisions.

2. The Ability to Commit Commitment is one of the key aspects in an effective board director Often, people don't realize just how time-consuming sitting on a board can actually be. It's not just a matter of turning up once a month for a few hours – you must also take things like committee meetings, necessary training, strategy and planning days and company events into consideration.

You may also be involved in fundraising events, networking, acting as an ambassador for the organization and building sustainable relationships, not just with your fellow board directors, but with the stakeholders, investors, management team and donors. This workload can be manageable, even if you have a day job. But you have to first decide whether you're committed; because if you're not, it will soon show

3. Equanimity

Equanimity is a little-known but highly effective personality trait to have. It applies to the ability to remain calm, composed and collected, even under stressful or difficult circumstances. This is a beneficial attribute to have in the boardroom because tensions can become high, and arguments occur. Being able to remain calm no matter how fractious the boardroom gets will land you in good stead.

Keeping your cool when everyone else is losing theirs will help you make better decisions. Listen to your fellow board directors, even in the most heated arguments (and if you have that aforementioned emotional intelligence, this won't be a problem for you). Communicate with two ears and one mouth and think before you speak.

4. The Ability to Prepare

Being properly prepared is an essential attribute to board directors. If you're heading into a board meeting with absolutely no idea of what's to come, it will never look good – regardless of whether it's your first board meeting or your fiftieth. When you are the most prepared person in the boardroom, you're also the most influential, and that's a highly desirable position to be in.

To be properly prepared, read all the papers before the meeting to make sure you fully understand everything that will be discussed. And if you don't understand something, ask about it beforehand. You should also conduct prior research. Not just about the topics to be discussed, but the influences that could apply to your fellow board directors, and the key challenges that are currently being faced by the stakeholders.

5. Being Open-Minded

The best boards are those that are diverse and respectfully so. Diversity isn't effective if it's met with conflict and aggression from those who have opposing ideas. Being a successful board director includes keeping an open mind to that diversity and being vulnerable enough to admit when your mind is being changed. While it can often be difficult to put your personal opinions aside when it comes to various topics, a successful board director will be able to take on new ideas and allow their opinions to be challenged.

6. Being Mindful of Your Impact

The boardroom, when run correctly, is where a lot of change can occur This is a powerful influence that can either be positive or negative, and a successful board director will always remember to be mindful of the impact his/her decisions can make.

Thinking both on the micro and macro levels can help you take into consideration any possible ripple effect that will happen through decisions made by your board. Think about the impact your choices will make on everything, from the other board directors to the stakeholders, investors, donors and the community, and take that into account with each decision.

7. Bravery

Part of being an effective board director is being brave and having great leadership skills, and if your personality is more prone to passivity, you might find this hard. But change will never be brought on by being passive. If you aren't brave enough to speak up in the boardroom, especially when it's about issues you care about, you will never be able to change things. If you want to make an impact, you have to make waves.

Bravery in the boardroom means having the ability to understand which important questions need to be asked, and having the smarts to know when you should ask them. Asking the right questions and challenging the assumptions made by both you and your fellow board directors can make sure your board remains on topic and on the right path.

8. Being Dispassionately Passionate

Passion is key to boardroom success, but being able to remain dispassionate about those passions is equally important. Often, your board might come up against highly emotive topics, and it's important to remain as logical as you can without being blinded by your feelings on it.

It's great to have strong feelings and beliefs, but keep in mind that remaining coldly logical about them is the only way you will be able to make better, more effective decisions.

9. Saying No to Good Ideas

A great director is comfortable saying no, even to good ideas. This can be hard for some, but it's a skill you will come to learn throughout your career. Having the ability to prioritize the best ideas while refusing others (no matter how great they may seem) will only serve to benefit your board. Focusing on the best ideas and utilizing your resources accordingly will ensure you always tackle what's most important.

If you've read through this list and are feeling downcast because you feel you don't have one or more of these attributes, don't despair. These are all learned behaviors that you can work on and achieve over time, which will help you be a successful, happy board director

Here is a little history on this special day

It was emigrants, particularly to the United States, who transformed St. Patrick's Day into a largely secular holiday of revelry and celebration of things Irish.

C i t i e s w i t h l a r g e n u m b e r s o f I r i s h immigrants, who often wielded political p o w e r , s t a g e d t h e m o s t e x t e n s i v e c e l e b r a t i o n s , w h i c h i n c l u d e d e l a b o r a t e parades. Boston held its first St. Patrick's Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762.

Since 1962, Chicago has colored the river green to mark the holiday (Although blue was the color traditionally associated with St. Patrick, green is now commonly connected with the day.)

Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green”— sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock, the Irish national plant, in the lapel. Corned beef and cabbage are associated with the holiday, and even beer is sometimes dyed green to celebrate the day Although some of these practices eventually were adopted by the Irish themselves, they did so largely for the benefit of tourists.

St. Patrick's Day, is the feast day (March 17) of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at age 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 C.E. to convert the Irish to Christianity By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools.

Many legends grew up around him—for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts.

As of the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, February 6, 2023, we have five qualified Board Candidates who have submitted their Candidate Interest Forms and Disclosure Statements and entered the race for election to the 2023 Board of Directors.

I am seeking your vote to serve on the Sun City Aliante Association Board of Directors. I have owned my home in the community for over 3½ years. I retired in August and I now live here fulltime. I fell in love with this community over the past years.

For the past 22 years, I served on Garden Valley Homeowners Association in California, serving as President for the last 7 years. Garden Valley was self-managed for the first 17 years. As a board, we met the challenges that were presented by an older community I will bring those years of experience, along with a fresh eye, to the Sun City Aliante community.I am educated through Community Association Institute (CAI) and have been a member of the Orange County Chapter for 22 years. I also served on the Orange County Chapter Board of Directors. I credit the education that CAI provided for keeping me updated on

issues important to homeowners. I will continue to be a member of CAI here in Nevada.

Sun City Aliante is a solid community and I look forward to adding to the great work that the present board, in concert with First Service Management, has done. I will bring a long-term vision to the board. Those long-term goals take planning and funding as Sun City Aliante considers its place in the greater Aliante Community of North Las Vegas.

I consider our many clubs as a rock of the community They cement friendships and expand interests of the people in the community I will support those clubs and do everything as a board of director to that end.

I have served on your Board of Directors for the past 11 years and have been President for the past 8 years. During my tenure on the Board, t h e r e h a v e b e e n m a n y c h a n g e s t o o u r c o m m u n i t y ; n a m e l y, n e w p i c k l e b a l l a n d basketball courts, and a beautiful, remodeled community center and landscaping which requires much less water than was previously needed.

We have experienced the severe rise in inflation which has resulted in significant increases in the cost of maintaining our community center and with the vendors we work with on a constant basis. Due to our excellent financial picture, we have been able to maintain our stellar fiscal picture with minimal increase in monthly assessment.

NANCY PRINCE

It has been a privilege to serve on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors since 2019, and as Treasurer since 2020. I achieved my Dedicated Association Leader Certificate (DCAL) from the Community Association Institute (CAI) in 2020 and renewed it in 2022. I am now running for re-election to the Board of Directors for another 2-year term.

Sun City Aliante has been my home since moving here from Wisconsin nearly 6 years ago. Born and raised in suburban Chicago, I am a Registered Nurse with the majority of my career spent in corporate administration and

I am one of your 7-member Board, and my vote does not have greater value than any other Board member, but as President, it is incumbent upon my position to constantly look to the future and position us in a favorable light when new people consider our community vs. new communities around us. In addition, as President, I am required to help other Board members make prudent, fiscally wise decisions that eventually affect us all. It is with pride that I point out that Sun City Aliante has won the prestigious award as outstanding large association in southern Nevada for the last 3 of the past 4 years and was nominated again for this year In addition, I have been nominated for Board member of the year for the last 4 years. Hello Residents! New residents – Welcome to Sun City Aliante.

A few weeks ago, I had to inspect the construction of the pony walls built on the back patios of homes abutting the golf course The only way I could accomplish this task was to actually walk on the golf course as I did not have a golf cart available. I was reluctant to do this, because I was concerned about getting hit with an errant golf ball.

I had to break down this task into two inspections. I walked around for thirty minutes in the morning and again in mid-afternoon. On both occasions, I observed a few residents walking leisurely and admiring the view At one point, I encountered a small dog walking aimlessly without a leash and no owner was to be found. I waited awhile to make sure the dog did not run toward the busy street and get hit by a car. It was only when the dog heard its owner calling its name, about 100 yards away from me, that it ran towards her

Residents, I implore you, please don't use the golf course as a walking trail or a dog park. It is only a matter of time before somebody gets severely injured because they are on a golf cart path or on the actual turf. Moreover, I would hate to receive a report that your pet is injured or killed by a golf cart, a car, or another dog, because you are allowing your pet to roam freely without a leash. Please be courteous and respectful.

I also want to clarify the best phone number to use for certain situations. According to the North Las Vegas Police Communications Division, the non-emergency number (633-3111) is used to report a crime that has happened when no one needs an ambulance and there were no weapons involved.

Examples are:

• Your house or car was broken into.

• To report a lost or found animal.

• Your runaway child has returned home.

• To report vandalism and the suspects are gone.

• To report a noise complaint.

• To report a runaway or missing adult that does not need special care.

Please use this number for non-emergency situations rather than dialing 911. For other important phone numbers, an insert enclosed in every Breeze magazine has a list of these phone numbers, such as NLV Street Lights Out, NLV Water Shut Off, and NLV Water Waste.

Friendly Reminder: Garbage and recycle bins may be placed outside for the collection no more than 12 hours prior to the scheduled collection time and must be removed within 12 hours after In addition, trash and recycling containers should either be stored in the garage, outside on the utility side of the garage or in the rear of the Dwelling Unit, and should be screened from view of the street, neighboring Lots and the Common Area.

She used various layers of fiber, stitching, beads and sequins to create a graphic, compelling artist's impression of the cosmos. Congratulations on your amazing exhibit, Kathleen!

Hello Sun City Residents,

I want to start off by acknowledging that February was Black History Month, and I am so proud of the City of North Las Vegas. Our city is rich in culture, and it is so important to acknowledge the t r i u m p h s o f o n e a n o t h e r a n d c e l e b r a t e o u r diversity! On that note, I am excited to share all the wonderful things our City has been up to and am looking forward to the many activities taking place this month.

First, I want to congratulate the North Las Vegas Police Department on the recent graduation of 16 recruits at the Vegas Valley Police Academy. The graduates completed an intense six-month-long academy that introduces them to the basics of policing. The academy establishes qualifications, training and standards for Nevada's peace officers; provides instruction on local, state, and federal laws; develops leadership skills; and emphasizes customer service and community engagement. The newly-minted police officers will undergo thorough field training and evaluation for the next six to eight months and will serve constituents from two North Las Vegas police stations.

Moving forward, I am thrilled to share that CNLV has been on an economic development streak and has recently opened several new restaurants, Born & Raised and Salad & Go, officially broke ground on Arvato which conducts data supply for Meta (the company behind Facebook), and opened the warehouses for Boxable and Moen (one of the largest faucet and fixtures brand in North America)! I am so grateful for the economic success in North Las Vegas and am excited for their businesses to serve our residents.

I want to mention that I will be visiting the Del Webb community located on Losee and Centennial to attend the North Las Vegas Fire Department's quarterly fire symposium to speak about kitchen safety, blood pressures and emergency preparedness. These symposiums give the community a chance to connect with our Fire Department and get to know a little more about the ways they protect us each day I am honored to attend this quarterly event with them, and look forward to sharing all that North Las Vegas Fire Department has been up to!

Finally, on January 29 the City of North Las Vegas dedicated a tree and memorial plaque to commemorate the lives lost in the terrible accident that took place one year ago and claimed the lives of a North Las Vegas family as well as two others. At this memorial City leaders, affected family members, crash survivors and the community gathered to honor the space as a place where family and friends can enjoy a peaceful place of remembrance for years to come. I am so sorry to all those affected; you will never be forgotten.

Thank you for another exciting month, and as always, remember: keep your dogs and pets safe during this cold winter season and follow our Ordinance No. 3053, which requires animals to be properly sheltered and cared for while being kept outdoors.

In recent months, you may have noticed North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) police cars on patrol in our community During our January Neighborhood Watch meeting, we had two NLVPD police officers present, who spoke to the group about safety tips. The first tip was to always be alert and aware of your surroundings when you leave your home. Be aware of cars that are normally parked on your block and those you don't recognize. Make it a point to know your neighbors and become familiar with who is usually home during the day or night, which homes might have health care workers parking in front of the home, and which landscapers are normally on your block.

The second tip was to park your car in the garage and keep the garage door closed except when you are home. When the NLVPD was patrolling Sun City Aliante during the first two weeks of January, the officer reported 49 open garage doors; however, only 12 were occupied. Over the years, there have been several police reports of items stolen from open garage doors in broad daylight.

The last important tip presented was to take a photograph of your valuables such as electronics, jewelry or weapons, note serial numbers and identifying markings, and keep that information in a safe place. Photos and serial numbers are very helpful to the police in trying to recover your items as well as for your insurance company should you be the victim of a crime and need to file a claim.

As we enter the new year, Patrol wants to wish all residents of Sun City Aliante and their families a happy and healthy 2023. Aliante Patrol has over 35 volunteers, who each share a common mission of being a deterrent to crime and a motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” Remember that we all live in Sun City Aliante and share common values. Respect, humility, and kindness are just some values that we strive to uphold.

As residents of Sun City Aliante and members of Security Patrol, all of us should treat others the same way as we want to be treated. It makes us a stronger community

I am excited about the new year and opportunities for our Patrol. We encourage residents to volunteer for the Sun City Aliante Patrol and look forward to working with new volunteers.

The North Las Vegas Police Department recently conducted an operation in Sun City Aliante and recorded 49 fully open garage doors during a 16-hour period. They encourage homeowners to keep their garage doors shut. An open garage door is an invitation for theft or uninvited entry into your home.

Vivian Fully is an accomplished teacher and counselor, but her real passion is art. “I really enjoy teaching art. I like to see people having a feeling of satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment when they create something,” Vivian confessed.

She particularly enjoys working with watercolors and teaching others to find the artist in themselves. “I love to teach people how to work with water and color and how to blend colors together,” Vivian said. “I make it easy for people to learn the art. Even if a person has no experience, I help them create something they are proud to call their own.

Her passion for art began when she took her first art class at Santa M a r i a J u n i o r C o l l e g e , a n d afterwards, she won first place at a Lompoc, California Art Gallery She went on to earn a BFA degree in Art and Design with a concentration in p a i n t i n g f r o m t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Texas, San Antonio. In addition, she a c q u i r e d d e g r e e s i n S c i e n c e , a M a s t e r ' s i n E d u c a t i o n a n d a n Educational Counseling Degree.

After she moved to Las Vegas, she earned a Doctorate in Education and taught science, art and art therapy at several different high schools in the Las Vegas area and her last teaching job was Science Chair for Adult Education.

The Fee is $25 for residents and $50 for non-residents per table. The Fee for an additional table is $20 for residents and $45 for non-residents. Once your application is accepted, NO REFUNDS will be made.

L. OETTINGER – CAPTURES THE MAGIC OF THE STARS

I was delighted to meet with resident Kathleen Oettinger, an exceptional artist, who currently has a solo exhibit on display through April 2 in the Centennial Hills Library. I hope you will visit the exhibit.

“My intention for this solo show is to send more love and healing into the world. The works, and each step in their creation, even to the individual stitches, were done with that hope. I see them as a merging of religious iconography and mandalas that can be used to find a space for centeredness and connection in any given moment,” Kathleen

Art was a healing modality for Kathleen to deal with issues, especially during her teenage years. “I integrated art into every aspect of my life. I was never not in that art space,” she said.

From her earliest years Kathleen Oettinger remembers the nursery rhyme, “Star light, star bright, the first star I see tonight; I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight,” and how she gazed with wonderment into the alluring night sky

You might say Kathleen was blessed to find her passion at a very young age. She was surprised at Kindergarten graduation with an art award. She instinctively drew a cat on a rug with one and two-point perspectives. “I received a lot of positive attention; that was the beginning for me,” Kathleen noted.

The biggest inspirations on her art, she reflected, were the Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh. She was particularly moved by The Starry Night and has recreated her own self-portrait of Van Gogh's masterpiece Kathleen also credits Hilma Af Klint, a Swedish artist and mystic, whose abstract expressionism had a strong influence on her work.

Also, inspired by her Finnish heritage, after graduating Pratt Institute with a BFA in Printmaking, she focused on creating wood cuts depicting women mentioned in the Kalevala, the national epic poem of Finland.

“My goal as an artist,” Kathleen said, “is to invite viewers into a journey of their own. Through my art I seek to communicate with them in a way that supports a sense of belonging within the mystery we inhabit together.”

Over the years, her use of artistic materials has changed – from pencil drawings to wood cuts, to watercolors, to oil paintings, to fabrics and other embellishments.

Her newest solo exhibit, at Centennial Hills Library, was inspired by stunning images from the Hubble Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. She used various layers of fiber, stitching, beads and sequins to create a graphic, compelling artist's impression of the cosmos.

“When I looked at the Hubble photographs, they were so beautiful to me. The whole Hubble series reflected peace and harmony The James Webb photographs made me feel joy and gratitude,” Kathleen explained.

A s a p r o f e s s i o n a l a r t i s t , K a t h l e e n h a s received many awards and recognitions. She is very proud of her involvement with former First Lady Roslyn Carter's organization, Every Child By Two Kathleen received an award from Mrs. Carter for her creativity and service to American children in her work as editor and art editor A big part of her life as an artist was being involved with The Women's Caucus for Art. As a Board member, she was privileged to represent the organization at the Fourth United Nations World Women's Conference held in Beijing, China. But perhaps, her proudest moment was when Kathleen was selected as the feature artist of the Contemporary F i n n i s h - A m e r i c a n A r t i s t S e r i e s b y F i n l a n d i a U n i v e r s i t y i n Hancock, Michigan.

T h e c e r e m o n y w a s held on February 7 at 9 a . m . a t t h e C l a r k C o u n ty G o v er n men t Center, Commission Chambers, at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas.

Sonja received a Medallion Award, presented by Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, on behalf of the entire Commission and Clark County. She also received a Kente Cloth, a weaved cloth which was a cultural tradition of the Asante worn exclusively to dress kings and their courts.

Sonja was honored during Black History Month for her exemplary service as a member of the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors, her devotion to community service, and her distinguished career as a leader and educator for the California public education system, serving as a teacher, principal of high schools and middle schools, and serving in the Office of Special Projects and Human Resources where she oversaw funding and compliance for 33 schools and the Central Office.

ALIANTE CLASSY CHEFS

Aliante Classy Chefs held last month's meeting on Tuesday, February 7. They celebrated a Valentine's Day theme with Karen Baird in charge of the decorations. The table was exceptionally beautiful. Diane Lazarus made an outstanding heart-shaped meatloaf, Bill and Diane James made Roasted Potatoes, Beets and Deviled Eggs, Tina Tendy made Chocolate Dipped Strawberries, Sylvia Ross brought a Chocolate Raspberry Cake and Phyliss Minster brought a Triple Tiered Cake.

March's theme will be centered around St. Patrick's Day. Corned beef and cabbage, with green drinks and pistachio pudding are highlighting the meal.

CELEBRATING THE LUNAR NEW YEAR - Nearly 90 residents welcomed the Lunar New Year (Year of the Rabbit) with a celebration on Saturday, January 21. The event included a variety of activities including Line Dancing to many songs; a Fashion Show of Lunar New Year finery; a potluck dinner with appetizers, Asian dishes, entrees, & desserts; the exchange of red envelopes with many gifts; and a raffle of many prizes donated by the clubs.

The LGBT+ Social Group meets at the Community Center Activity Room on the second Wednesdays at 6 p.m. This is a SAFE SPACE to meet and enjoy the company, stories, and adventures of like-minded people Additionally, group activities such as movies, bingo, cornhole, or house parties will be available when there is group interest.

In January, the group successfully hosted their first community-wide event, a Karaoke Dance Party There was a great turnout with line dancers, choruses, joke-tellers, two-steppers, and solo singers providing a great time. Attendees could still be heard laughing as they were leaving the event.

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS

Seniors with Warm Hearts will be busy this month with many activities. On Thursday, March 2 and Friday, March 3, members will volunteer at Somerset Academy Aliante to read to the students in various classrooms and grade levels in conjunction with Nevada Reading Week.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 16 at 11 a.m. when the group will have a guest speaker, Dale Darcas of Serving Our Kids Foundation. He will talk to the members about what the organization is doing to help elementary school children with food insecurities as well as the future for Serving Our Kids. At the same meeting, they will finalize the volunteer list for bagging meals for Serving Our Kids later in the month.

Spring is just around the corner and I am looking forward to warmer weather

VETERAN'S AUXILIARY

The Veterans Auxiliary held a meeting on Tuesday, January 17 in the Vista Room. They discussed the wonderful trip in December to the VA Hospital to deliver lap blankets to the patients there. It was the first time since the pandemic that members were allowed to actually go into rooms and visit with the Veterans.

By the time this issue of The Breeze goes to print, the Auxiliary, along with the Veterans Club of Sun City Aliante, will have sponsored the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, February 18. At the January meeting, volunteers signed-up to help with the event, and the Auxiliary announced they planned to hold a Donation Drive to Help USA transitional veteran housing. Items such as paper towels, toilet paper and breakfast items were collected.

Several members took a tour of the Genesis transitional apartments (Help USA) on January 18 given by their Director of Social Services, Gerson Pedrozo. Members were impressed by the efforts made by HELP USA to help homeless veterans.

Volunteer sign-ups and plans for the “Paint with Vivian” event on March 1 were also discussed at the January meeting.

The Veterans Auxiliary regular meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Vista Room. The March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 21.
