PORTFOLIO PatrickRogers
I am a student currently studying for my Masters Degree in Architecture, this portfolio contains three of my significant works throughout my studies.
As an individual I typically frame my design process around interior/ exterior relations. Inspired by the engawa, I intend for the architecture I create to have a wonderful spatial relation and transition from exterior to interior, while also allowing a person to be immersed in the architecture, whisked away from reality if only for a moment. Another way in which this is defined (visible in this portfolio) is with the play between soft vs. hard materials equating to inviting vs. safe spaces.

UMKCCOMMUNITY CENTER
THE LITTLE PARK
UMKC Community Center
The design of the UMKC Community Center was intended to reflect a part of Kansas’ rich history. Emmulating the Parks and Boulevards project as a microscopic version, it offers spaces for individuals to cross paths, force interactions, or retreat to any of the green spaces to relax. The primary purpose of the Community center as a whole is to educate students on campus in the arts, with a secondary purpose of drawing individuals in to view any of the art galleries provided within the complex.
.
The upper lobby space operates as an information center, housing administration. In addition, this space includes a cafe and plenty of seating for students or visitors to take a rest and relax. It is a hope that this area, much like the pathways around the building, would force interaction between visitors and students, creating a better outreach into the community.

Based on the research of The Social Life of Small and Urban Spaces, these teardropped gardens, as well as the central stepped spaces offers an outside stopping space. Given this buildings location in relation to the plaza, and the incomming rail stop adjacent, it would not be unheard of for passerbys to need a place to stop, rest, or simply relax. While the central space is occupied with open seating, allowing many to gather, the teardropped gardens offer a more shaded, quiet area. Either under the trees or against the building, this space would be more medatative than social, or perhaps a place for a picnic, or outdoor study for the students.
FOREST IN THE TOWN
Located two blocks away from the Kauffman, the Mori Music Hall was designed as an addition to the symphonic side of Kansas City. Given the bustling streets, noise, and other outside factors, the intent of the design was to create a forest like space with structural filigree above ones head, a space to calm down and decompress. They would walk along the thick stone walls into the lobby space, where the inviting opening would lead them down into the cave-like performance hall for them to enjoy the show.

While the main function of this building is as a music hall, it also offers other ammenities. On the first floor is the music and repair shop, where insturments of various types would be sold. While the second floor houses the classrooms, allowing for either visiting musicians or hired instructors to teach.

In the music hall itself, a very prominent singularity looms over the stage, this being the “light cannon”. Inspired by the tranquility of the Son Doong Cave, this skylight could be closed off or left open during the day; though, during a performance the ethereal glow would draw and hold focus on the stage, and provide a sense of wonder and awe that only adds to the performers work.
A HOME FOR YOU AND ME
Iola, Community Garden Housing
A large problem for rural towns within Kansas current happens to be a scarcity of food, or rather access to food. Within the town of Iola, KS specifically, there is only only one grocery store. One way the town has attempted to combat this is the use of Community Gardens, which allows for better access to fruits and vegetables. Building off of this, my design attempts to adress these issues by placing a community garden in the center of the housing units. It is my hope that this would promote relationships, in addition to food access.
Second Floor Plans
There is a growing need for housing, not just in large cities but smaller towns as well. These units remain small with the possiblity of offering short term living, but maintain the base necessities for long term living as well. Each unit is unique in its own right in terms of interior, and exterior orientation.

One Person Unit Interior

Community GardenOn site are two additional housing units which, unlike the one person and two person units, are detached. The idea behind this method is that the units could be used modularly throughout the city, expanding their capacity for housing while minimizing the need of a new design process. Both units on site are identical, and house up to four people, with three bedrooms.
