just $125,900. Ideal for singles, couples, and first-time buyers, these charming 2bedroom two-stories include an attached garage and offer a third bedroom as an option. The latest addition to Fischer’s single-family selection, Phase I of the Manors is nearly completed, and Phase II is now open. The builder’s information center is located in the new “Stratton” display, a spacious two-story shown with three bedrooms and an expansive loft that can easily be converted to a fourth bedroom. Johnson added that customers frequently describe the Stratton’s unusually open layout as this home’s “wow factor.” The Manor Collection features five of the builder’s most popular designs – three ranches and two two-stories, starting from $159,900. Basic floorplans range in size from 1302 to 2468 square feet and provide two to three bedrooms. Renowned for its nostalgic “Old St. Charles” theme, Charlestowne’s avenues are lined with decorative streetlamps and signage, and neighborhood amenities include water features, a quaint pavilion overlooking the stocked main lake, several pocket parks, a playground, and generous amounts of greenspace. Entered from Boschertown Road, the community is less than a mile from Route 370 and just a short drive from the countless attractions of Historic St. Charles. Johnson invites calls at 636947-5932, and complete details are posted on the company website, FandFHomes.com. By Barb Wilson

ow more than 75 percent sold out, Charlestowne continues to capture the imagination of all types of homebuyers. North St. Charles’ amenity-packed, multi-village development ranks among the most successful communities in the metro region, and Fischer & Frichtel has been riding the crest of that success all summer! Responding to customer requests for larger upscale homes in this desirable location, Fischer & Frichtel celebrated grand opening of its fourth product line in May, and community sales manager Matt Johnson reports that the Manor Collection has been another instant hit. “The Manor Collection rounds out the selection of homestyles we’ve been able to offer here in Charlestowne,” Johnson stated. “Our Towne Homes sold out at a record pace. Only six ownership opportunities are still available in the Cottage Home section. And our Lifestyle Collection really took off this summer! Even the display sold, but a new model is under construction.” A quick tour of Fischer’s villages confirms the level of activity. Ten Showcase Inventories and 17 customerowned homes are currently under construction, with more scheduled to start shortly. Johnson noted that inventories are in high demand, offering prompt occupancy to customers who need to move quickly. “Value is driving sales here, and the price point is great,” he explained. “Renters, in particular, are amazed to find that they can own a

Of the 41 homesites originally designated for these affordably-priced two-stories, only two open settings remain for purchase. Both are suitable for the “Windsor” plan, which is based from $159,900. Also available in this section are two move-in-ready Showcase models – a Windsor and a “Devonshire,” and two final Showcase Devonshires are under construction. remember visiting Daniel Boone home as a surly teenager in the 70s. I was bored with all things not relating to music or boys, so I yawned and rolled my eyes through the tour. I am ashamed. If I had listened…if I had really looked around…I would have seen the amazing history of this location. I might even have realized how much I could learn about the traditions and lifestyles of my grandparents and great-grandparents, who grew up in Missouri. Now that I am older and At the have tempered my obsession with both music and boys, I can appreciate the educational and cultural value of visiting this beautiful home and area. Our history is just a short drive away at the Historic Daniel Boone Home & Heritage Center. Travel down the hills and curves of Highway 94, amid wine country farms, treecovered acres and river valleys. You’ll see the beauty Daniel Boone and his family encountered when first seeing it over 200 years ago. 65-year-old Daniel acquired 850 acres here: his large family settled throughout the acreage. The Home and Heritage Center is the home of his youngest son, Nathan, where Daniel spent most of his time. The Home took years to build—the limestone walls are 21/2 feet thick, to protect the family from Indian attacks. Four stories tall, it is an impressive testament to the family’s skills. Daniel Boone passed away here in 1820, after many years as Commandant of the region. Operated by Lindenwood University, The Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center gives visitors a glimpse into the history of both the Boone’s life and Missouri’s culture. The Home overlooks a village comprised of over a dozen 19th century buildings; all have been moved here from within 50 miles of the Home, lending an authenticity and continuity to the experience. Along with guided tours, the Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center offers several student educational programs throughout the year for a variety of ages and interests. Special events at the Home are always highly-anticipated. September and October hold two events sure to interest all ages—and maybe even those teens.

Halloween, Spirits From the Past October 19 The early 1800s were filled with superstition and strange rituals performed to protect families and ease fear. Halloween is the perfect time to learn about these beliefs, in a family-friendly (shivery) program. Recommended for those aged 7 and older, visitors will view the village through the ethereal glow of lanterns along the streets; tales and stories will bring to life the many ways the townspeople dealt with their fears—some Daniel Boone Home and Heritage Center unfounded and some very real. Tours begin at 6pm. The beauty of autumn along 94 enhances Adult admission is $10 and children (ages 4the events with a backdrop not to be missed. 11) are $6. our house is overflowing with things you thought you needed and stuff you wanted. The basement is a landfill of boxes and bags, and you dread opening the closets because it reminds you how badly you need to climb in and clean them out. Why not have a garage sale? Imagine it-no more dusting those trinkets you stopped being crazy about years ago. Your too-tight clothes could disappear; along with the angst you feel when you realize they’ll be out of style by the time you ever fit into them again. With a bit of work and a couple days set aside for the sale, you can turn your junk into cash and do your overdue ‘Fall’ cleaning at the same time.

Y

Page 23

Hold A 2 Garage

Make sure you have change. Many salers head out with twenties. Get a couple tens and a few fives, along with twenty ones and a roll of each coin. You won’t need pennies if you keep your prices even.

$ALE

Start saving plastic and paper bags for purchases. Have batteries on hand so buyers can check out toys and appliances that need them, and provide an electrical outlet to let them test other items.

Empty Your Closet and Fill Your Wallets SALE DAY By Robin Robin Garrison Garrison Leach Leach By

THE BASICS Every city in St. Charles County has ordinances regarding yard sales. St. Charles city has many; other areas less. Your first step should be to check with your city hall for a list of do’s and don’ts. Most ordinances deal with the placement and length of time your signs are allowed to be displayed. Some areas require a permit to hold a sale, and others limit the duration and frequency of sales at the same address.

1

. Signs are crucial. Even if you advertise in the paper, many salers just drive and watch for yard sale signs. “SALE” is not the most important word in your sign. Your address should be large and bold. Add arrows and use a bold, black marker. Put these up the night before, if permitted.

1

. You want your sale to be easy to shop. Hang clothing. Arrange your tables with space between for browsing. Keep similar items together: kitchen things, wall decorations, etc. Most salers do a quick scan when they arrive and head for the area that holds what they’re looking far. Some like to “dig”, but most are on a mission. Whether you hold your sale on the lawn or in the garage, be sure to cover or remove anything NOT for sale. Use large tarps or blankets to cover garage tools, etc., or you can be sure you risk selling them. Move the kids’ toys and lawn ornaments.

2

Choose a date for your sale. Many sales are held on the weekend, but you may be more successful if you consider having it mid-week. Diehard yard “salers” head out every Wednesday, ads in hand, to cruise the neighborhoods for bargains.

2

Check with neighbors to see if they are interested in either adding stuff to your sale, or are willing to hold their own garage sale on the same day. Bigger sales draw bigger crowds and several on the same street make “salers” salivate. Say that five times fast.

. No matter how early you begin setting up your sale, you will have “early birds”. If you can’t set up the night before, be ready to decide whether or not to let them look.

3

3

SUPPLIES

Fairness would dictate making them wait, but many times you can unload a lot of stuff to those “professional salers” who show up at dawn.

Decide how you want to mark your items. Self-stick tags are easy, but don’t always stay. Office supply labels work better than the little colored dots. Forget masking tape: tacky and time-consuming. Some sellers opt to price each area or group of items similarly and forego tags. Example: “All clothing $1” “CDs $2 each”.

1

THE BIG PAYOFF When your sale is over, you will have a wallet full of cash instead of a house full of clutter. Take your profits to the bank, head to the mall for new (bigger? argghh) clothes, or hop in your car and visit a few garage sales just for the fun of it. Caution: don’t buy back anything you just sold! 23

bitter cold wind swirls through crackling leaves, reminding us that Halloween—that spookiest of holidays—is almost here. Our celebration of this ancient day can range from family-friendly to downright terrifying, but we all enjoy the shivery excitement of this creepy night. We’ve dressed up in everything from Casper costumes to chainsaw-ripped rags, carved huge orange melons into grinning lanterns and begged for candy from our neighborhood friends since the late 1800s. Though the origins of these traditions may have been pagan and somewhat gruesome, modern life has turned Halloween into a yearly celebration of fun and make-believe.

BOO! The Origins of

Halloween Traditions

Jack-O-Lanterns During ancient Celtic times, glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Early Irish settlers found pumpkinsnative to America-easier to carve, and burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.

Halloween Costumes The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was a time of famine for many, and those afraid of the dark dreaded the short

daylight of the winter months. On Halloween, it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world. People thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by the ghosts, people wore masks outside after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. People also place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Trick-or-Treating Our Halloween tradition of "trick-ortreating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England.

During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food, and families would give them pastries in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives. By the turn of the 20th century, parents had successfully turned Halloween into a family party, celebrated by all ages with games, food and festive costumes. Neighborhood Parties and Celebrations Halloween evolved into a more community-friendly holiday in the mid-twentieth century, with town-wide parades and parties. Trick-or-treating returned to popularity as an inexpensive way for neighborhoods to celebrate. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats.

Rural America in the late 1800s was not known for frivolous fun. Farm work was hard; the long days of summer were spent tending to livestock and gardens. When fall came and the harvest was finished, it was time to celebrate. Halloween was the perfect holiday to utilize the wagons and horses for a trip along winding roads in the crisp air. Often, the ride was accompanied by haunted stories and scary scenes set up along the route. More often, the ride was a chance to be together with friends, to pitch a little

The Legend of "Stingy Jack" The practice of carving Jack O’ Lanterns came from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into Heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into Hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O' Lantern."
