he sights and sounds of Christmas are great, but the aromas are what make the holidays memorable. Warm cookies, scented candles…and that Christmas tree! Nothing says Christmas like a real tree— chosen, hauled, placed and decorated by your family. With these tips, you can make this the year you go “natural” and bring home a tree from one of the tree farms in our area. Your kids will go bonkers, your house will smell terrific and you may stir up fond memories of your own childhood. Grab a camera, dress warmly, pile the kids in the car and visit a local tree farm this year for your Christmas tree. THINGS TO REMEMBER 1. Take your hike through the tree farm with a discerning eye. Look for a tree without dry twigs or lots of loose needles (a few are fine). If it has a sour or musty smell, pass it by. 2. Remember, your living room ceiling is not 20 feet high. You will need to add extra height for a tree topper ornament and tree stand. 3. Protect the top of your vehicle with a blanket or plastic. Bungee or rope the tree securely, then pull on the tree to make sure it’s tight. Remember to put the bottom of the tree aiming forward. 4. When home, cut off a bit of the bottom of the trunk, straight across. The tree farm may do this, too. This will give the tree a fresh place to soak up water. 5. Your tree will need LOTS of water…up to a gallon the first day and one or more quarts thereafter. Use cold water and don’t let it go dry. 6. Use only UL approved lights, cords and devices on your tree. As long as your live tree is hydrated, stable and monitored, it is safe for your home.

Bring Home a REAL Christmas Tree this Year TREE FARMS & LOTS IN OUR AREA Many tree farms and lots offer more than just trees; they give your family a real country/holiday experience. Some have gift shops, visits with Santa, hot chocolate and rides through the woods. Call before you visit these tree farms and lots to make sure they’re open and ready for business.
