STYGAR Family of Funeral Service

• Arrangements with clergy, cemetery and florist • Pre-need funeral planning • Grief counseling/support for up to a year • Veteran's benefits counseling

Our Foundation From humble beginnings in 1937, when John Joseph Stygar purchased Central Undertaking and Livery on Cass Avenue, the Stygar philosphy of service has grown strong. That first year, John J. performed about 40 funerals. It was a different time. Funerals were held at home. Communities were close-knit. Reputations were important. Losing a loved one is difficult for any family. We're honored that so many families have come to know and trust the Stygar family during their time of need. We will work diligently to preserve that trust now and into the future. And, we pledge to always do business in an honorable way that will make our children proud.

The Stygar family and our caring, professional staff is always available to serve you. Our services can be performed at either of our locations or at a church, a cemetery or any other location your family chooses.

To Meet Every Family's Needs and Wishes, We Offer: • • • • • • •

Funeral services Memorial services Church visitation services Cemetery burials Cremations Donations to medical schools Arrangements for out-of-town deaths

We offer a choice of quality funeral products in a wide range of prices and specialize in working within each family's budget to create a meaningful tribute to a loved one.

oliday time brings out the kid in all of us. We remember those incredible Christmas mornings when we opened our presents and hopehope-hoped the toys we wanted most would be inside.

Play-Doh Kids have squished their way through 2 billion cans of Play-Doh since 1954. No need to stick with snakes or balls; there are dozens of accessory sets from barber shops to design-a-dress boutiques.

TOP SEVEN TOYS OF ALL TIME

TOP SEVEN TOYS OF 2014-15

(According to “Disney Family” editors)

Mr Potato Head Kids are fascinated with faces from birth, and Mr. Potato Head helps them learn hand-eye coordination while they make their potato look as funny as their imagination desires. I am so old that I remember when you had to use a real potato. It’s less messy now, and there are several variations on the traditional Mister.

TOYS

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The boys are back in a big way this year: some predict the Turtle toys will be hard to find after November.

Building Blocks The first wooden play blocks were invented by Fredrich Froebel—the man who also invented Kindergarten. So he knew a thing or two about children. Babies bang them….toddlers stack them and knock them down (over and over!). Older kids imagine and design fantastical worlds and creations.

Kinectic Sand and Art Kit It’s been called “The Maker Movement”: parents are encouraging more handson classic play with craft kits like Crayola Paint Maker, DohVinci and Lego Fusion Town Master. Leap Band and Kidizoon Smart Watch Mimicking Mom and Dad is all the rage this year, with these fitness bands and kids’ smart watches.

Etch a Sketch Ohio Art has sold more than 160 million of them since 1960. Kids love a challenge (remember learning to write your name on that Etch A Sketch?) and nothing is more satisfying than building that set of stairs or a building there. And the satisfaction of turning the screen over and making it all disappear? Wow. Crayons According to Disney, the average kid will break, wear down or lose over 703 crayons by the time he’s 10. Get your toddler his first “big box”—the one with the sharpener—and a couple of coloring books of his own. Although I am a big “stay in the lines” person, there’s room for all kinds of creativity with crayons. Matchbox Cars It’s all about the crashes. And sound effects. Every child needs a handful of tiny cars and a pile of dirt to play with. You can take Matchbox cars anywhere; Grandma’s

Frozen Everything “Frozen” will fly off shelves and the elves will be busy making “Frozen” figures, furniture, bedding and toys.

house is less boring with cars to run over her patterned area rug. Imagination can take these cars to roads we adults can never travel. Chatter Telephone Originally called the “Talk-Back” phone, Fisher Price changed its name to the more polite “Chatter Telephone” one year after its invention in 1962. When they tried to change the rotary dial to pushbutton, though, complaints rang out and they changed it back. Not a cell phone…but so much fun for little fingers. 22

PreSchool Innovation Technology Even this little kids are going tech: Imaginext DC Super Friends R/C Transforming Batbot (Wow!), Doc McStuffins Get Better Talking Mobile and Go! Go! Smart Animals Zoo Explorers Playset. Hope they aren’t as pricey as their names are long! Characters and Collectibles Stuffed toys are always a big hit with kids each Christmas; some popular ones this year are: Furreal Friends, My Baby Panda, Shopkins figurines and Puppy Surprise. Active Toys Must haves this year? Zoomer Dino, Nerf-N-Strike Elite Mega Thunderbow and Hot Wheels Street Hawk Remote Control Flying Car. By Robin Garrison Leach

May (bass) and Craig Fuller (guitar) a short time later. The cover credits on “The Ultimate Prophecy” listed Phil Stokes as the bass player but Kenny May played bass on the album. The art department at Mercury asked our manager who the players were and he gave them the current roster as Kenny May was no longer in the band by the time the album came out so his name was mistakenly left out.

JD Blackfoot at Sheldon Theatre March, 2013

Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

Meet JD Blackfoot A True “KSHE Klassic” Artist Michael: I go back about 34 years with JD Blackfoot, a true St. Louis “Klassic” musician. In 1982, he even played live in our home for a private party that was unbelievably memorable. Michael: JD, please tell St. Louis how you created your band, one of the St. Louis' most unique rock bands!

JD: I recorded a three song demo in Cleveland Ohio in 1969 and was signed to Mercury Records a month later. I asked some of the players from the band called “Tree” that I had played with for a few months if they would like to join me in J.D. Blackfoot and Dan Waldron (drums) and Jeff Whitlock (guitar) joined me at that time. We immediately started writing “The Ultimate Prophecy”. We added Kenny

JD: The first concert I performed in St. Louis was on a Tuesday night at the old Ambassador Theater in 1975. Tom Rush was the guess act and Cecilio & Kapono was the opening act. The first show was a sellout and the second show sold 800 tickets. I was amazed that St. Louis was turning out for sold out shows every night that week. I learned that night that St. Louis was the greatest city for music that I had ever seen, and it still is, now forty years later. Michael: What is your most memorable experience in St. Louis?

JD: In late 1981 I came to St. Louis and KSHE to have a meeting with your Father (Shelly Grafman), who I respectfully called “Mr. Radio” and Bob Burke, who Shelley had hired as the new promotion manager at the station. It was the first time that I had met Bob. He, Shelley and J.D. Blackfoot gutarist George Mobley and I went out to lunch. I came to talk your dad into having KSHE promote a J.D. Blackfoot concert at the old Keil Opera House where we could capture both “The Song of Crazy Horse” and “The Ultimate Prophecy” in front of a live St. Louis audience. Shelley loved the idea but Bob Burke, who was not yet familiar with the KSHE, St. Louis, J.D. Blackfoot connection, asked me who our opening act would be? I said to Bob that with nine musicians and their equipment on stage for a live 24 track recording that there would not be room for an opening act. In a wee bit of a condescending manner, Bob Burke said, “J.D., we just had Cheap Trick, Saxon and Krokus all on the same bill at the Keil and only sold 1750 tickets, and I don’t want to burst your bubble, but you’re not strong enough to sellout the 3900 seats at Kiel by yourself.” I looked at Shelley and said, “

all I ask you to do is to announce the show an extra month early so we would have time to add an opening act if we needed too. KSHE announced the concert on a Friday night and by Tuesday we had 2200 tickets sold and by showtime we were indeed, sold out with no opening act. Right on St. Louis and KSHE. That audience and that night was the most wonderful excitement that I have ever experienced in my career. Michael: How instrumental was St. Louis, and Shelley Grafman, in building your career and your band? JD: KSHE was later than some in finding my music as I had already had two number one hits with “Who’s Nuts Alfred” and “One Time Woman”, and a number one album with “The Ultimate Prophecy” in my hometown of Columbus, OH, as well as in countries like Germany and Holland, an Album of the Year Award in New Zealand where I recorded “The Song of Crazy Horse”, and sales in 22 other countries by the time that KSHE really started playing my music heavily. The difference that made St. Louis my best market was that KSHE, unlike any other station has played both, the 21 minutes of “The Ultimate Prophecy”,

and the 18 minutes of “The Song of Crazy Horse”, at least once a month for almost 40 years now. Shelly Grafman was a courageous radio man and was not afraid to take the chance of playing extremely long cuts off albums. Shelley's lead made it possible for other stations to take the chance as well. Besides I made it possible for the jocks to put on my record, then put on the pot of coffee, call their wives, and visit the restroom, and still have time to finish an article in Billboard Magazine, all before my song was done. You’re welcome fellows!

followed the procession of riders to the Wounded Knee Cemetery in remembrance of the Wounded Knee massacre. The ride is held on June 25th, the anniversary of “The Battle of the Little Big Horn”. I finally got to visit Fort Robinson, Ne where Crazy Horse was killed in 1877 and that was a very moving experience for me. I will now be going back to meet with Oglala leaders to see if “The Song of Crazy Horse” and the friends that the song has amassed can be of help in some small way with the many issues that confront Crazy Horse’s people.

Michael: You have a connection with the native American community, how did that come about?

Michael: Tell St. Louis about how you created “The Ultimate Prophecy?”

JD: Contrary to that belief, I have had very little connection with the Native American community until recently. In June of this year I was invited to play at the Oglala Commemoration on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where I met many wonderful Oglala friends, and was honored to meet the new President of the Oglala, Tom Poor Bear. It was my first visit to KILI Radio on the reservation and I had a great interview with the station manager and Commemoration leaders. On our way to the station we

JD: I had written “The Ultimate Prophecy” and “Death’s Finale,” and Dan Waldron and Jeff whitlock had written “Pink Sun,” and we sat around one night talking about the songs and realized that if we put the songs together they made a complete statement. We finished the other two songs and that was that. Seems easy now, but it was months of hard work back then. Michael: Is there a scheduled stop in St. Louis in 2014?!

JD: I do an annual event I call the “September Moon Campfire Concert” every year where the “Friends” come and camp for the weekend and enjoy the music on Saturday night. This year it will be at the Okaw Valley Kampground in Brownstown, IL starting September 25th, just an hour east of St. Louis. I have never advertised the event, we just send out a letter to the “Friends” in the St. Louis region and they show up with happy faces and a little hooch and have a great time. At the moment there is no St. Louis concert planned for the next several months, but most likely one by May of 2015. By the way Michael, every time I play a St. Louis show, I always tell the audience how much I appreciate your Father, Shelley Grafman, and his KSHE Radio for putting me in the ears of the greatest “Friends” a performer could possibly find anywhere. And here's to your Mom, Emily, who all KSHE listeners from our era will remember that we affectionately called FMily. My kind regards to your family and to the old timers in St. Louis who still remember how to really rock, the Sweet Meat way! Hello St. Louis, I’m J.D. Blackfoot, and I love you too! Michael: Thank you JD for taking the time to be our guest in our exclusive promotion, Rock n Roll Connection’s to St. Louis! You were and always will be a true “St. Louis” klassic! ith the holidays just around the corner, area officials are reminding residents and businesses about the importance of shopping locally because retail sales tax revenues are a major source of funding for vital public services such as roads, parks, police, and more. In St. Charles County, reliance on retail sales tax as a percentage of annual community budgets ranges from a low of 21 percent in St. Charles City to a high of 57 percent for St. Charles County Government.

Here is the impact for other local communities from low to high:Weldon Spring (23.3 percent), Cottleville (29 percent), St. Peters (33 percent), Wentzville (39 percent), O’Fallon (40 percent), Lake Saint Louis (42.3 percent), and Dardenne Prairie (47 percent). “Every time someone shops at a business in the community or eats at a local restaurant, they are helping create local jobs and sharing the cost of the public services that have made St. Charles County a nationally recognized place to grow live, work, and play,” said Greg Prestemon, president and CEO of the Economic Development Center of St. Charles County. “Shopping locally helps support jobs, roads, parks, police and much more.” He said there are nearly 9 million-squarefeet of retail development in St. Charles County and new businesses are opening all the time. “We have everything from international franchises to unique local shops

in St. Charles County

stretching from the Streets of St. Charles out to the Dick’s Sporting Goods opening soon in Wentzville. Shopping and dining options have never been more abundant in St. Charles County,” Prestemon said.
