Celebrating Five Years of Cowbell! MO’ Cowbell • Sunday, October 4th in Historic St. Charles

T

hinking about tackling your first 5K or taking on the challenge of a full marathon? Then MO’ Cowbell, on Sunday, October 4th, is the event for you! Celebrating five years as the flattest, fastest course in the St. Louis Region, MO’ Cowbell is a big-time race with a hometown feel! It is perfect for the first-time runner and is USATF Certified for those want to qualify for national races like the Boston Marathon. There is a race for every skill level: marathon, half marathon, half marathon relay and 5K. With all MO’ Cowbell has to offer, the biggest question is which race to run? The course which starts and finishes in Frontier Park in historic St. Charles, takes runners along the banks of the Missouri River and through picturesque neighborhoods. Unique to MO’ Cowbell is the “High-Five Zone.” Ideally placed at Mile 5, participants run through Hermans Farm Orchard where they are cheered on by hundreds of spectators and volunteers ringing cowbells and of course, giving lots of high-fives!

MO’ Cowbell participants sure do get MO’ for their registration: a long-sleeved technical shirt, car sticker, sports bag, course entertainment, water and aid stations, a firstclass finisher’s medal and of course the commemorative cowbell! Organized by the nonprofit group, Partners for Progress, in cooper-

ation with Big River Race Management, MO’ Cowbell is put on by the community for the community with proceeds staying in the community. Kicking off the race weekend is the Barnes-Jewish St. Peters and Progress West Hospitals’ Health and Fitness ExMO’. The ExMO’ will feature health and fitness minded exhibitors from local and national companies. Taking place on Friday, October 2nd and Saturday, October 3rd at St. Charles Community College, the event is open to the public and will serve as packet pick-up for participants. MO’ Cowbell anticipates 6,000 participants this year, so, get a MOO’ve on! A quarter of the runners are first-timers and with some training, you could be one of them! Walkers are always welcome! Register today!

BACK COVER FEATURE SealMaxxPlus offers customers the opportunity to never seal their wood or concrete surfaces again. SealMaxxPlus is a service applied process of cleaning and sealing wood and concrete internally. The process is two days with a day in the middle for drying purposes. The initial application of sealant is applied following a deep cleaning of the wood or concrete. The cleaning removes all previous oil based stains that may have been applied. While wet the wood/concrete sealant is applied and carried into the substrate by the rinse water. After drying for 24 hours the wood may be lightly sanded prior to the application of the moisture barrier sealant. This silicone based product seals the wood and concrete for several years to come. The wood sealant can contain a cedartone stain to give the wood a very natural cedar finish. Concrete sealant, for the most part, is applied as a clear product.

THE MUSIC SCENE

St. Louis’

ROCK ‘n connection ROLL © Michael Grafman 2015. All rights reserved • mrginvests@gmail.com Supe Grande

Meet Supe Grande Michael Grafman interviews one of the founding bandmates of Missouri’s own Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

O

ur state of Missouri has produced a number of awesome rock bands. I am thrilled to share with you the Ozark Mountain Daredevils! I had the privilege of chatting with the bassist, Michael “Supe” Granda via email to find out what he's been up to. In addition, we spoke about his connection to

St. Louis and its impact on his illustrious musical career for the past 40+ years. Michael: Supe, tell St. Louis how you and your band members created The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, one of St. Louis' classic rock bands that went onto national prominence.

SUPE: In 1969, I left St. Louis to go to college in Springfield, Missouri. When I got there, I was more interested in finding other musicians who shared my passion for music, than I was in going to classes. It took a year or so, but I found them. Springfield has a wonderfully diverse and talented musical gene pool, due to its connection to the old, Ozark Jubilee. When the Jubilee packed up its tent and relocated to Nashville, many of the musicians didn’t want to uproot their families and leave the beauty of the Ozarks. So, they didn’t. There are still some wonderful musicians up in those hills. This, along with the cooler, younger musicians, made for a very, very high level of musicianship – and still does. When the members of the Family Tree (who would eventually become the Daredevils) met, we all hit it off immediately and began singing and playing, while writing our own songs. We got together more as a songwriters’ collective, than we did as a formal band. This was hard in the beginning, as audiences seemed to be more interested in hearing the latest Doobie Brothers tune than they were in hearing our original material. BUT, we stuck to our

guns, as none of us were the least bit interested in playing the latest Doobie Brothers tune. We made a pact between us to play ONLY our songs. We went into the recording studio and made a demo tape of our original material, which we took to Kansas City. Here, we found Stan Plesser and Paul Peterson, who had formed Good Karma Productions to manage Brewer and Shipley (One Toke Over the Line). They dug our songs and signed us to a management deal. Then, when they went to Los Angeles to conduct Brewer and Shipley business at A&M Records, they passed along our demo tape to David Anderle (head of the A&R department). He also loved it and signed us to a record deal with A&M. We made the first record and had a hit (If You Want to Get to Heaven). Then, we made our second record and had a hit (Jackie Blue). The rest, as they say, is history and 43 years later, we’re still singing, writing and playing our original material. If anyone is interested in more details, they can be found in my book, “It Shined; the saga of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils”.

Supe performing with Ozark Mountain Daredevils

n

SUPE: There are several. When I lived here, I attended as many concerts as I could at the Fox Theatre, Kiel Auditorium and the Mississippi River Festival. I couldn’t get enough music – of any and every kind. Then, years later, when I returned with the Daredevils, I was in absolute heaven when I walked out onto those very same stages to play. It was a dream come true. I’ll never forget it. Michael: How instrumental was St. Louis in building your career and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils? SUPE: Very instrumental. They dug what we were doing, right off the bat. Of course, the AM stations played ‘Jackie’ and ‘Heaven’. But, because K-SHE, who was very powerful and influential, used the freer form, FM format, they introduced, not only our hits, but our album cuts and our more obscure material. Consequently, St. Louis got a much broader spectrum of our music than the rest of the country. St. Louis was behind us from day One. They’re still there, today. We’re very grateful.

L-R: Supe, Michael & Ariella Grafman, & Sara & David Surkamp of Pavlov's Dog

Michael: Who was most influential in St. Louis as to assisting you and Ozark Mountain Daredevils? Michael: What's your connection to St. Louis? Specifically, the city, the people, the music scene? SUPE: My connection to St. Louis is two-fold. I had bands when I attended Lindbergh High School in the 60s. The Coachmen Four played dances and sock hops all around the south county area, but never

did gather much acclaim. Then, when the Daredevils hit and we began frequenting the St. Louis area, I became the St. Louis conduit to the band from Springfield. Here, is when I reconnected to the local music scene. Michael: What was your most memorable experience performing in St. Louis?

SUPE: Shelley Grafman - without a doubt. He and Stan (Plesser) were friends. When we came to play St. Louis, Shelley gave us the keys to the station and the combination to the lock on the beer fridge. I became friends with him, as well as all of the K-SHE DJs and, because I was the St. Louis guy in the band, spent lots of

Harvestowne Auto Body

time hanging around with the jocks, picking out records to play and watching the movies on the giant screen of the “66” Drive-in, that stood directly adjacent to the station. Michael: What are you doing now and are you still playing music? SUPE: Yes, I’m still playing music – all the time. I moved to Nashville in the early 90s to broaden my song writing career. I’ve released ten solo albums and have had my songs recorded by Chet Atkins, Augie Meyers (Texas Tornados), Walter Egan, Billy Bremner (Rockpile) and Dr. Demento. I started my own publishing company and record label (Missouri Mule Music) to issue my Supe records. I’m in the studio on a daily basis and have traveled the world, playing bass with artists like Vassar Clements, Carlene Carter, the Garbonzos and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Plus, you can find me all over Facebook. Music is my life. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. Every time I strap on my guitar, I turn into a twelve-year old kid, playing ‘Louie, Louie’ with as much zeal and passion as I can. Michael: Thank you Supe for sharing your story and your connection to St. Louis! Supe: Any time.
