BACK COVER FEATURE SealMaxxPlus and Integraseal announced recently that they have joined together to offer customers the opportunity to never seal their wood or concrete surfaces again. After ten years as friendly competitors David Monahan, President of SealMaxxPlus, and Greg Tyler, President of Integraseal announced the merger into one company retaining the name SealMaxxPlus. SealMaxxPlus is a service applied process of cleaning and sealing wood and concrete internally. The process is two days with a day in the middle for drying purposes. The initial application of sealant is applied following a deep cleaning of the wood or concrete. The cleaning removes all previous oil based stains that may have been applied. While wet the wood/concrete sealant is applied and carried into the substrate by the rinse water. After drying for 24 hours the wood may be lightly sanded prior to the application of the moisture barrier sealant. This silicone

Concrete sealant, for the most part, is applied as a clear product. SealMaxxPlus will be participating in both upcoming HBA Spring Home Shows at the Americas Center March 6-9 (Booth 732) and St. Charles Convention Center April 4-6 (Booth 701). Visit www.sealmaxxplus.com for additional information concerning either process. You may request a no obligation, no cost consultation from the web site or by calling 636.294.6299. SealMaxxPlus is an A rated Accredited Business by the BBB and a proud member of the Home Builders Association of Eastern Missouri. SealMaxxPlus offering you the finest quality products available, with the highest degree of customer service possible, at a fair and reasonable price.

THE MUSIC SCENE

St. Louis’

ROCK ‘n connection ROLL Stor y by Michael Grafman • mrginvests@gmail.com

An exclusive

interview with Journey's former tour manager, Pat Morrow ...this guy Grafman, who ran KSHE, an institution in St. Louis, was responsible for breaking Journey throughout the midwest. Once KSHE would add Journey's songs, the others would follow. Michael: Pat, tell St. Louis how Journey started and your place with Journey?

O

ne of the biggest bands in the music scene in the last 30+ years was Journey! I sat down via skype with one of the gentleman who made Journey, former tour manager, Pat Morrow and talked about Journey, his career, and what connection he and Journey had with St. Louis!

Pat Morrow: It was 197374 when I started working for Journey. They were pretty big in the west coast but not so big in the rest of the nation. We could do San Francisco, Sta Monica civic in LA, the little hall in Bakersfield, Berkely Community Theater, that kind of thing but we couldn't make any money east of California. And at this time, in those days, 197475, there was a station in

St. Louis called KSHE and run by a guy named Shelley Grafman and he got way ahead of everyone else. They got hot and heavy on the radio with Journey's music. One thing led to another and we performed there, we did a show with David Essex, (Hey kid, rock n roll, rock on) who was big there at the time, and then we grew in St. Louis and it spread up the river to Chicago. And within a year or two, Journey grew in Memphis, KC, Cleveland, and

Pittsburgh all became big for Journey. This guy Grafman, who ran KSHE, an institution in St. Louis, was responsible for breaking Journey throughout the midwest. Once KSHE would add Journey's songs, the others would follow. In 1980, we had a triumphant return to St. Louis at Busch Stadium with Sammy Hagar and I'll never forget it when I got to introduce Shelley Grafman on stage, gave him credit for what he had done, it was a very complete feeling.

Michael: How did you get your start in the rock scene? Pat Morrow: I was a drum roadie for Ansley Dunbar, former original drummer of Journey. Ansley became, in those days, became such a crucial part of the mix. You had to have Ansley on board for things to work out but I could handle him. I could talk to the artists and tell them to be quiet and to cooperate with everyone. Because I could do that with Ansley, I graduated to Journey's tour manager and handled the band for many years that way. That's how we became close with Contemporary Productions with Steve Schankman, Irv Zuckerman, and Shelley Grafman. Nobody could loosen Grafman's grip on Journey. We felt a loyalty to Shelley and it was returned in kind.

Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis? Pat Morrow: It's a great happy surprising town. There was this big hotel in downtown, near the river, and I had a ton of equipment so I called down for a bellman. This old guy looks at my stuff and says, “man, this reminds me of my ol' days.” I said to him, “well, what did you do?” The ol' man says, “I was Louie Armstrong's tour manager!” So, we sat there for over 30 minutes and he had some great stories to share with me about Louie. Michael: What's your most memorable experience/ concert in St. Louis? Pat Morrow: Well, I loved the early gig Journey did with McKendree Spring back in 1974. KSHE sponsored it at this old grocery store. I said, “where are the house lights?” They brought me this piece of plywood with toggle switches, like light

J Hampton JEWELERS (636) 928-1883 www.Jhamptonjewelers.com

switches! 6 to 7 light switches, it was something. Journey had a killer gig. And McKendree Spring had this little guy who played the white telecaster guitar, canadian rockers. I met them, they played great. And then Journey came on and it was the first time that Journey really scored, great live show! 3 encores, great stuff in those days. Michael: How instrumental was St. Louis in building your career? Pat Morrow: Well, without that move that Shelley Grafman did for us, Journey probably would've remained a regional favorite. It was a key signature move and could've happened somewhere else, could've happened in Chicago but it didn't. It happened in St.

Louis with Shelley Grafman and KSHE. So, I guess I have a sentimental feeling for St. Louis. I know that Neal Schon and Ross Valory, the 2 original members still feel a closeness to St. Louis. Michael: Please, tell St. Louis what you are doing now. Pat Morrow: “I am consulting with Chaos Productions, a production company, that does a lot of lighting and video for John Mayer, Beyonce, Tom Petty, Justin Bieber... I'll probably be involved with The Who later this year in a couple of gigs. Michael: Thank you Pat for taking the time to tell St. Louis your rock n roll connection to our city.
