How to Make the Most, Academically, of Your Child’s Summer Break Does Your Child Forget Everything He Learned in School, Once Break Arrives? Within 24 to 48 hours after learning new concepts, students often begin to forget information unless it is reinforced or applied immediately. That’s why, during summer break, even the best students forget lessons they have learned during the school year. While a break from school is great for recharging your children’s batteries, if students aren’t using the skills they acquired in the classroom, they could find themselves lagging behind--even when doing traditional summer school. The education

experts at Sylvan Learning will design a personalized learning plan to meet every child’s individual academic needs-ensuring success when the school bell rings this fall. BACK COVER FEATURE SealMaxxPlus and IntegraSeal announced recently that they have joined together to offer customers the opportunity to never seal their wood or concrete surfaces again. After ten years as friendly competitors David Monahan, President of SealMaxxPlus, and Greg Tyler, President of IntegraSeal announced the merger into one company retaining the name SealMaxxPlus. SealMaxxPlus is a service applied process of cleaning and sealing wood and concrete internally. The process is two days with a day in the middle for drying purposes. The initial application of sealant is applied following a deep cleaning of the wood or concrete. The cleaning removes all previous oil based stains that may have been applied. While wet the wood/concrete sealant is applied and carried into the substrate by the rinse water. After drying for 24 hours the wood may be lightly sanded prior to the application of the moisture barrier sealant. This silicone

Stygar Family of Funeral Service

Our Foundation From humble beginnings in 1937, when John Joseph Stygar purchased Central Undertaking and Livery on Cass Avenue, the Stygar philosphy of service has grown strong. That first year, John J. performed about 40 funerals. It was a different time. Funerals were held at home. Communities were close-knit. Reputations were important. Losing a loved one is difficult for any family. We're honored that so many families have come to know and trust the Stygar family during their time of need. We will work diligently to preserve that trust now and into the future. And, we pledge to always do business in an honorable way that will make our children proud.

The Stygar family and our caring, professional staff is always available to serve you. Our services can be performed at either of our locations or at a church, a cemetery or any other location your family chooses.

An exclusive

interview between TimeOff Magazine’s Michael Grafman and David Surkamp of Pavlov’s Dog Michael: I had the privilege of sitting down with David Surkamp of Pavlov's Dog this past winter to find out what he's been up to. In addition, we spoke about his connection to St. Louis and its impact on his illustrious musical career for the past 40+ years. Michael: David, tell St. Louis how you created Pavlov's Dog, one of the 70s classic rock bands? David Surkamp: Pavlov's Dog was formed from a band I was in with Rick

Pavlov’s Dog Band Members from left to right are: Amanda McCoy, Rick Steiling, Abbie Steiling, David Surkamp, Nick Schlueter, Sara Surkamp, Mike Safron Stockton called High On A Small Hill. We were already doing some of the songs that became standards in the Pavlov's Dog's repertoire, including “Episode.” Rick and I were looking for a drummer and we were thinking we'd be a power trio. If we were a trio, we could make a lot of money with only three peo-

ple to split the money. Unfortunately, we had a really lousy sense of economics. Siegfried was there day one with his incredible talent & wisdom. We tried Mike Safron out as our drummer and he seemed to fit well. A saxophone player tried out for a couple of weeks. That didn't seem to work. We decided we

needed a lead singer. A lovely lady named Lexa Engel did that for at least the first 6 months. We also employed a terrific guitar player named Steve Levin. Steve had a girlfriend on the east coast and wanted to be with her. He disappeared. Steve Scorfina was out of REO Speedwagon at that point and joined us as

“There would have no career and no Pavlov's Dog if it wasn't for Shelley Grafman and KSHE Radio, nobody would have heard me at least in this context...” a guitar player. David Hamilton came in from Santa Cruz and all of a sudden we had a piano player. Douglas Rayburn brought in a mellotron and a flute & the band was complete. Michael: What's your connection to St. Louis? David Surkamp: Well, I never really had much of a connection unfortunately. Pavlov’s Dog never did the club circuit, year in, year out like other bands. We came from a different perspective. I guess the only reason people began to pick up on Pavlov's Dog was because of Shelley Grafman when he added our songs to the KSHE play list with Subway Sue (a demo at that). It lit up the lights at the station. All of a sudden, record companies were calling. We were a decent live act, although we were always best in the studio. Michael: What was your most memorable experience performing in St. Louis? David Surkamp: Fairport Convention came to the Ambassador Theatre in 1977, and they were always

one of my top 5 bands. I opened for them at that performance as a solo artist, and it was the last tour that Sandy Denny would undertake before her untimely death. I would say selling out Kiel Auditorium a couple of times was pretty great. But hearing Sandy Denny sing for the first time, which turned out to be the last time, would have to be among my favorite memories. Michael: How instrumental was St. Louis in building your career and Pavlov's Dog? David Surkamp: There would have no career and no Pavlov's Dog if it wasn't for Shelley Grafman and KSHE Radio, nobody would have heard me at least in this context. I guess at that point I was going to Nashville to pitch songs, but since my songs weren't country & western in nature, I would have inevitably been forced to NYC or London. Michael: What are you doing now and are you still playing music?

J Hampton JEWELERS (636) 928-1883 www.Jhamptonjewelers.com

David Surkamp: As a matter of fact, we have enjoyed the international success of our recent two CDs, “Echo & Boo” & “Live &Unleashed,” both released in the last 3 years. Also, Pavlov’s Dog completed another sold-out European tour in late November 2013. We've never been this far into the Eastern bloc, yet we performed in both Brno & Prague Czechoslovakia this time. Some version of the Mark IV line-up of Pavlov's Dog has been performing internationally for nearly a decade, and this is a seriously polished hard work-

ing ensemble. I’m on track to release another 2 CDs in the next couple of years. At this point, our fans expect that. Our conventional universal audience is frankly outside of the US. Think China, Japan, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom. I still miss performing in the Gateway City. Michael: Thank you David for sharing your story and your connection to St. Louis!

Business Happenings Honoring Tomorrow’s High Tech Leaders Seventeen public and private high school students in St. Charles County were honored for being tomorrow’s high tech leaders during the Annual STEM Recognition Breakfast hosted by the civic group Partners for Progress in March. STEM is a national effort to prepare the workforce of tomorrow by encouraging today’s students to engage in studies, events, and careers involving science, technology, engineering and math. Each local high school selected one student to honor and PfP expressed their recognition by giving each of them an Apple iPad mini and donating a FIRST Lego Robotics kit in their name back to an elementary school in their district.

The new 30,000-square-foot Midwest Machine Tool Training Center opened March 2014 in the O’Fallon Corporate Center. It is part of Pohlman’s desire to “give back to the community” and help young adults 18 to 28 who only have high school diplomas or GEDs to get the basic training needed to start a well-paying

industrial job. The lack of skilled industrial workers is becoming more apparent as baby boomers retire without their ranks being replenished by the upcoming workforce. In response to that reality, the MMTTC offers hands-on, project-based learning that includes robotics, metallurgy, quality control, team work, and soft skills. Currently about 30 local businesses have agreed to partner with the MMTTC when it comes to internships, job placement, and continuing education.
