TA K E T I M E OF F !

Welcome Readers! Happy spring and summer!! It’s finally here. We have lots of fun things to do packed within our pages to celebrate this beautiful time of the year. Check out the Fairs and Festivals article to find some free fun events to enjoy with the family. There are certainly an abundance of them in May and June! Free outdoor concerts are also happening all around town. And the pools are opening! The St. Charles area has some great pool/recreation complexes and aquatic centers where you can cool off this summer. Check them out in our Dive into Summer article. We have changed the format of our listings this issue. The full page calendars have been eliminated and we now have small calendars throughout the listings to refer to, and the events are arranged in chronological order and also by week. We hope this helps simplify your search for events. It also allows us room to bring you more articles and event listings. Enjoy your Timeoff. See you in July! Pat Catanzaro, Publisher

Congratulations to our winners of last issue’s contest: Paul & Rina Kenkel of St. Peters who picked up their copy at Gingham’s on Hwy 94 and Donna Bromley of St. Peters who picked up her copy at the American Legion. The clocks were hidden in the Ethyl’s ad, the Room Makeover Handpainted Kid’s room ad AND in the Farmhouse ad. Very few readers discovered all three of them! COVER STORY

Caregivers Inn Providing Personal Care with Dignity and Respect

W

hen you walk into Caregivers Inn, you feel as if you could take your shoes off, plop down on one of the couches and just enjoy your visit. Robyn Schaber, owner of Caregivers in the Dardenne Prairie/O’Fallon area, wants you to feel right at home. From the cozy living room with its fireplace and comfy couches, to the bright sunroom, gracious dining area and private individual rooms, Caregivers is a place to relax and just enjoy life. “We are a small residential home; we deliver personalized care to everyone who lives here,” she says. A registered nurse and licensed nursing home administrator, Robyn’s passion for caring for seniors started with her own family. The child of mature parents, Robyn realized the importance of consistent, competent and loving care for older adults. She became a registered nurse, specializing in senior healthcare. In 1996, Robyn purchased Caregivers Inn in O’Fallon. After her father’s death, Robyn’s mother moved into Caregivers: her daughter’s “home away from home”. “Mom lived here with us for 5-1/2 years. At first, she thought she was getting extra special attention because she was the owner’s daughter,” Robyn says with a smile, “but she saw pretty quick that—no—she was getting the same loving care that we give all our residents.” Along with her administrator of 15 years, Terri Loveless, Robyn has made Caregivers a place 30 residents call home. The staff of over 20 employees gives each person at the Inn a level of constant attention often missing in larger facilities. Like any family home, everyone is involved in the Inn’s varied activities and functions.

Weekly council meetings determine outside field trips—from shopping to dining at favorite restaurants—and special programs are brought into the home on a regular basis.

Style and Amenities Abound The outside of the Inn is beautifully landscaped with an outdoor walking area and a gazebo that keeps nature just a few steps away. A relaxed atmosphere gives those living at Caregivers the freedom to enjoy it all. Among the more charming areas of the Inn are the Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor and 24-hour Nutrition Station, where residents can enjoy a treat any time of day. The usual amenities are here, too: daily laundry and housekeeping service, medication administration, three well-balanced meals, inhouse Beauty Shop services and 24-hour assistance. Bedrooms have individual heating/cooling controls, free wifi and cable television. Residents are welcome to have personal vehicles on premises with a physician’s approval. In addition to month-to-month leases, the Inn offers respite care with two-week minimum stay required.

Plans for the Future In an effort to accommodate a wider range of seniors, Robyn has plans to expand her services at Caregivers Inn. “By the end of this year, we’re hoping to convert the West Wing of our home to an Alzheimer’s Care Unit,” she says. “It will be a secure wing, with structured activities and careful supervision.” “We want to be the kind of place you can feel welcome; where you can feel a sense of peace and safety in a warm, loving home”. by Robin Garrison Leach
