Continuing an 18 Year Tradition of Community Magazines in Chesterfield • New Name • Same Great Content • Fresh New Design • Serving Local Charities

An 18-Year Tradition Welcome to the New Year edition of Out ‘n Around. Yes, our name has changed, but we are still the same magazine you’ve read and trusted for years. We will continue to be your “What’s Happening” event oriented publication that has made us so popluar these last 18 years. We also publish a ‘sister’ magazine TimeOff in St. Charles. Together we reach more than 100,000 people throughout the region. Out ‘n Around is now partnered with several local charities. See page 18 for our Circle of Charity information. We are proud to have participated in the ‘Adopt a Family’ Campaign this holiday season for Friend’s of Kids with Cancer started by the Kelly Hager Group several years ago. 32 families were adopted by local residents and businesses and received gifts of food, supplies, clothing and toys. The pick-up party was hosted at Maryville University’s Buder Hall and student athletes, along with employees of the Hager Group and

other volunteers, wrapped and distributed tons of gifts to these families. Thanks to many of our readers and advertisers who were so kind to donate gifts, food, music, entertainment and more. We appreciate you giving back to the community. In this issue we have included a special section on RETIREMENT in West County. We hope you find the information helpful if you, or someone in your family, is a senior and getting ready to retire. In our Mar/Apr issue we feature

THE COVERING HOUSE

CIRCLE OF CHARITY

Fighting for a world without slavery

Did you know: • St. Louis is in the top 20 human trafficking jurisdictions in the country. • The average age of entry for a child victim is 13-14 years old. The average victim may be forced to have up to 20-48 sexual encounters a day. A pimp can make $150,000$200,000 per child each year and owns an average of 4-6 girls. • Approximately 300,000 children are at risk • Fewer than 100 beds are available in the U.S. for underage victims. • The Covering House, founded and based in St. Louis, seeks to provide refuge and restoration for girls who have experienced sexual exploitation or sexual trafficking.

W

e are proud to announce that our ‘Circle of Charity’ is now in full swing. Out ‘n Around has recently partnered with Friends of Kids with Cancer and Wings of Hope, both Chesterfield based charities. We will be presenting information about each of these charities in each issue. Please refer to these articles to find out how you can help contribute to these worthy partners- by donations, volunteering and attending the charity events. We invite you, our readers, to get involved with these charities or we encourage you to partner with a few of your own and give back to your community in 2015. As of January 2015, five percent of the annual ad revenue from full-time advertisers will be

donated to the charity of their choice. Here are a few charities represented so far: Circle of Concern www.circleofconcern.org Wounded Warriors woundedwarriorsproject.org Stray Rescue of St. Louis www.strayrescue.org St. Judes Hospital www.stjude.org The Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org American Lung Association www.lung.org

The Covering House P.O. Box 12206 St. Louis MO 63157 314-865-1288 www.thecoveringhouse.org The Covering House provides Therapeutic Housing (opened in the summer of 2014 ) for eight girls ages 13-17. Out- client services are also available for long term care to find housing and clinical care, and a Supportive Adults program to address the unique needs of adults in care of these children.

Give the Gift of Charity...Support

Friends of Kids with Cancer W

ith 2015 quickly underway, many people have made New Year Resolutions. Some people have thought of ways to better themselves AND help others during this year. Friends of Kids with Cancer wants to thank EVERYONE for YOUR unwavering support for our patients and their families in 2014! We look forward to continuing and building upon our efforts in 2015! There are many different ways and ideas for people of ALL ages to help Friends of Kids with Cancer this New Year! Are you tired of receiving yet another tie or an eighth pair of argyle socks for your birthday, anniversary or other celebratory event? We suggest telling your friends/family/loved-ones to make a contribution to Friends of Kids with Cancer IN YOUR HONOR! You’ll even receive a letter listing those who have made the contributions. Being charitable is far more rewarding than buying items for others that may or may not be used for what they’re worth. Making a donation to Friends of Kids with Cancer has far more value than just dollars; we measure our success in the amount of smiles and positive moments 18

we provide for our patients and their families during their battle with cancer. These ideas aren’t JUST for adults- kids can participate too! Do you want your child to learn the importance of giving-back? Does your child already have enough toys around the house? Encourage birthday party guests to bring new, unwrapped toys to donate to Friends of Kids with Cancer! Lemonade stands, bake sales, ANYTHING is appreciated and truly makes a difference! Does your school/workplace/ office want to get involved with a charity? Friends of Kids with Cancer would love to help host a Hats on Day/Jeans Day! This is an extremely easy way to fundraise, while not ‘breaking the bank’, and allows your employees to have a little fun at the same time! Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Mother’s Day, marriage, weddings, child birth, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, 4th of July...it doesn’t matter the occasion! Please call (314) 275-7440 or visit friendsofkids.com to learn more and make an impact in 2015. Help us continue to work towards our mission: helping kids with cancer…be kids!

T

here’s no question the idea of retirement has emotions running high: it can be fun, overwhelming or both. Some families will be dividing their days between part-time work and learning new skills or crafts, while others face the reality of illness. Whatever your needs may be during retirement, the following section gives places to live and things to do for seniors of all types and abilites in the Chesterfield/West County area. We hope you find the information useful. Retirement Living, Assisted Living and Nursing Care Chesterfield and the West County area boasts a number of retirement communities offering independent living, assisted living and skilled-nursing care or any combination of the three. R

etirement is finally here. The children have left the nest and now it is time to plan the rest of your life. The trend today is to sell the big house and lighten the load of “stuff to take care of.” It’s time to enjoy the next chapter of your life and free yourself from the burden of owning a large home and the time and money it takes to take care of it. You are starting to think “smaller might be better.” Options seem to be smaller homes or condos that are great to “Lock and Leave” for those who are retired and have a second home. Some people are actually moving to retirement areas of the country where the weather is better, or following their children and grandchildren. Others are

looking at renting as opposed to buying again, or possibly moving into a retirement community. Whatever the decision…it seems now is the time to make the move. Moving is certainly an overwhelming thought. I know because it took us two years to mentally give up the big house, and then the process started to figure out what to take and how to get rid of the

Advantages to Home Downsizing • Increased Cash Flow. Smaller mortgage payments or if your house is paid off, smaller insurance and tax payments. Less money spent on maintenance and yard work. • Lower Utility Bills. • Reduced Consumption. If there is no place to put it, you're much less likely to buy it. • Minimized Stress. Less responsibility, smaller workload, increased cash flow and greater flexibility -added together, they all reduce stress. Home owners who have successfully downsized sometimes appear happier when they're no longer overwhelmed by the demands of a larger home. • Freedom. Downsizing frees up your time so that you are able to volunteer, socialize, travel, or participate in other activities that you have longed to do.

Disadvantages to Home Downsizing • Fewer Belongings. Moving to a smaller home would

probably result in selling, giving away or throwing out furniture, books, kitchen supplies and emptying out the garage, basement and attic. •

Less Room For Guests. Hosting a huge holiday dinner might be out of the question in a smaller home. Out-of-town guests might need to stay at a hotel when they come to visit. • Less Prestigious. Sometimes appearances are more important than comfort levels. For home owners who place a great deal of importance on how they are perceived by others, which is often exemplified by offering the appearance that one is maintaining a certain level of financial success, a smaller home might not project that image. • Lifestyle Changes. Especially for long-term home owners, trading down means changing a lifestyle, and some people are resistant to change. There is a certain comfort level obtained by staying with what is familiar. When you make the decision that “It is time”, please give me a call. A good real estate agent can certainly make the process easier. By Faith Martens Worth Clark Realty

But if you’re like me, you can list dozens of reasons why a Twinkie is a lot more enjoyable than 20 minutes on the treadmill. Unfortunately, our lifestyles have made over 60% of adults either overweight or downright obese. That, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, is a recipe for health problems and a shorter life. Chesterfield/ West County offers a lot of ways to get yourself up and running toward keeping your resolution to get fit. With a myriad of health and fitness clubs in the area, you’re surrounded by ways to get started. Most of the centers in our county are businesses that require payment, and prices vary widely. In addi-

tion, we have countless opportunities for good-oldfashioned exercise in our county parks and trails. WHICH CLUB IS RIGHT FOR YOU? How do you choose a program or club best suited to your lifestyle, age, and fitness level? This is an important consideration, since your commitment to a regular routine depends on your level of comfort and wellbeing. Some fitness centers can seem intimidating to those of us whose sum total of daily activity consists of climbing into the car, working all day, and climbing into

the car to go home and watch TV. The club you select should be able to help you ease into an exercise program that will be safe and tailored to your beginning level.

tions whenever you stop by. If not, you may want to look elsewhere. And, by dropping in, your best view of the facility may be when you are not expected. Location matters: if you have to drive out of your usual route to get to the club, you will find reasons to skip going. Check the hours of operation to make sure your daily schedule will mesh. Look around the place: Is it clean and well-maintained? Do the machines look to be in good condition? Check the locker room and the bathrooms as well as the main areas. It is important to know who will be in attendance when you’re working out. Are the employees knowledgeable and trained to help you? In the event of an accident or other emer-

Shop for a health club as you would a car. Look at the ads and prices. Check for “hidden costs”-many require first and last months’ payment upfront, as well as a “processing fee”. This may not be mentioned in the initial information. Take a spin around a few of the places that look like a good fit for you. You don’t need an appointment to take a look inside-the clubs should have someone on location to give you’re a tour and answer your ques-

gency, can you be assured of assistance? Is the staff familiar with various levels of fitness and eager to make you feel comfortable in your program? Don’t be afraid to ask for references-most clubs will be happy to refer you to other members who can give an endorsement of their facility. Make sure the staff is available to spend time showing you how each machine works and to watch you as you use it for the first time.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR MONEY A number of health facilities offer personal fitness sessions to new members. For a fee, a trainer will develop a program for you and give one-on-one time to help you “jump start” your routine. This may be helpful for you. But don’t feel pressured to enroll. Staff should help you learn to use all machines free of charge and, while they won’t spend a lot of time with you, their role is to be there to answer your questions. Classes are always available-in a variety of levels and at various times-to keep things interesting. Most, if not all, are included in your monthly or yearly fee.

START SLOW TO PREVENT INJURY AND BURNOUT Most doctors recommend a starting workout routine of 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. Start slowly. Vary what you do: treadmill or other weightbearing exercise one session, muscle toning machines or weights the next. Expect some soreness when you first begin, but extreme pain may indicate you’ve overdone it. Check with your doctor to make sure you’re ready to begin an exercise program. Then, with the New Year staring you square in the face, jump into your car and visit one of the many fitness businesses in our area.

Offer valid at participating locations. Auto-pay registration required. Other restrictions may apply.

Add Yoga to Your Life in 2015!

Remember to bring water or a sports drink along when exercising.

If you want to measure yourself to track your progress but can’t bear to see the numbers, use a piece of ribbon or string. Wrap a separate one around each area (waist, hips, etc.) and put them aside for a few weeks. Check your progress by rewrapping your ribbons and seeing if they’re looser.

Make sure you have comfortable clothing and shoes that fit well. It’s not a fashion shownobody will care how you look. Dress for comfort and support.

In the Mood for Pasta? Compliments of Balaban’s • www.balabanswine.com

Balaban’s chef supplied us with this delicious pasta recipe. It’s simple to make. Give it a try! Ingredients • 1 lb. pasta, linquine or fettuccine • 4 oz. extra virgin olive oil • 4 cloves or 2 heaping tbs. of minced garlic • 5 oz. small cubed feta cheese • 3 1/2 oz. diced sun-dried tomatoes-oil drained • 5 oz. coarsely chopped parsley • 1 lb. peeled deveined shrimp 44

Preparation Bring a large saucepan of salted boiling water to a rolling boil. Add pasta and cook until al dente, approximately 5-7 minutes. Drain. In a large skillet heat the oil with red pepper flakes over medium heat so that the flakes flavor the oil. Add the shrimp and saute for 1-2 minutes. Reserve the parsley. Add all remaining ingredients and heat until hot. Add pasta and toss. Season to taste. Garnish with chopped parsley. Serves four.

tefanina’s pizza is the BEST in town! So say our readers in last year’s Best of Chesterfield’ contest. They voted Stefanina’s as #1 for pizza in Chesterfield/West County. This family owned and operated business began operations in the St. Charles area more than 30 years ago then expanded into Chesterfield about four years ago with an express version of their original full service restaurant. The menu includes pizza of course, plus appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pastas and a few desserts. There is a

small eat in area but most of their business is take out. Try the Party Pans-a perfect choice for your next event or get together. Open Daily Located at 103 Chesterfield Towne Centre just off Long Road in Chesterfield Valley. Call 636-530-9200 www.stefspizza.com
