irst Community Credit Union is celeTeam brating its 80th year serving its memmembers bers in the Missouri communities of St. helping local Louis County, St. Louis City, Franklin, charities Jefferson, St. Charles and Warren counties in Missouri and the Illinois counties of Madison, Monroe and St. Clair. In November of 1934, Monsanto Credit Union opened to serve Monsanto employees. After running this successful business for more than forty years, the Credit Union expanded its field of membership to serve companies and communities beyond Monsanto. By 1983, the business decided that its name needed to change to reflect their growing membership. Monsanto Credit Union Star Mascot became the now well-known First Community Credit Union. In 2006 First Community opened its impressive headquarters in Chesterfield on IGlenn D. Barks 64 near Boone’s Crossing. Its architecture is as iconic as the business itself; the building features a curved wall of windows and the blue, barrel roof which is the signature of First Community branches throughout town. First Community is different from other financial institutions because it is owned by its members. Members put their money in a variety of savings accounts, and that money, in First Community has over one hundred turn, is lent to other members. other convenience products and services: After operating expenses and reserve requirements are met, loan income is returned online banking, mobile banking and instantissue debit cards are only a few. to all members in the form of dividends and Glenn D. He joined the loans for homes, cars, recreational vehicles, company as Executive Vice President in the home improvements personal use and more. 9

1980s following a career in the savings and loan industry. His more than 40 years of experience in financial service highlights First Community’s professionalism and history as a trusted entity. In 2001, Glenn was named Chief Executive Officer. Since his tenure began, First Community has grown from $184 million to $2 billion in assets. Glenn’s level of tenure is typical at First Community. Many employees retire with 25, 30 or even 35 years of service. Rarely does a week go by that someone on the staff isn’t rewarded with a giant sheet cake in front of their peers to celebrate their anniversary of 15 years with the company. And talk about a birthday present: Each employee receives the day off with pay on their birthday. Glenn’s management philosophy of the nearly 400 employees at First Community shows a style that helps effect such a loyal and trusted workforce. He doesn’t just call the shots from the “ivory tower” of First Community’s Chesterfield Headquarters, but believes staff should have a direct path to him. Employees can use an on-line suggestion box to send their ideas straight to Glenn where he personally gives them a direct reply. Many of those suggestions have been implemented. Through careful expansion, Barks has grown the branch network to forty locations in Missouri and Illinois and partnered with retail giant Walmart in 16 local store locations. First Community is the largest credit union in Missouri and among the top 100 credit unions in the nation. Join First Community Credit Union’s many branches this year in celebrating their 80th birthday serving members and businesses in our area! Out ‘n Around / Sept-Oct, 2014

Sure, you could drive, too, but there is something quaint and intimate about a ride along the Missouri River Runner. Tucked away in the Missouri River Valley, Hermann is a picture book village where 19th century brick buildings hug the sidewalk, as they do in Germany. Many options are available here for both dining and lodging, all steeped in history and outdoor beauty. From venues with dramatic views to more than 300 guest rooms in all price ranges, Hermann is the perfect setting for an unforgettable Wine Country wedding. In September, Hermann hosts its Wedding Trail, a presentation of its many venues and lodging choices. And Hermann’s Oktoberfest is an annual celebration every weekend in October you won’t want to miss. Romantic? You bet.

hat a difference a generation makes when celebrating our life with family and friends. If you are a baby boomer your mother made your favorite cake, meal, and possibly even the candles. Hats, balloons and party horns were neat. Add a few friends and family, and what a treat. If you are in your twenties, pizza parties at the local restaurants and characters entertaining on stage was the latest and greatest when you were five or six. There might have been clowns at your house or a whole yard full of animals to feed and ponies to ride. Jugglers were another attraction available, coming to the local parks for fun and hoping the weather would cooperate. Yes, “WOW” is the feeling you get when you see the world of entertainment for the special birthdays children have today. Bounce to your heart’s content, fly in the sky, play video games until you drop, get your hair styled and then party in the same location, or twirl on a historic carousel. It may not necessarily be easier now, but it is more exciting. The baby boomers are participating in the party. Perhaps they are reliving their birthdays through the next generation? Listed below are just a few of your many choices today!

Friends of Kids with Cancer

ancer preys on all ages; the devastating effects of this disease can turn childhood into a calendar of appointments, treatments and diagnoses that steal the joy of being a kid and replace it with pain, isolation and chaos. Friends of Kids with Cancer works tirelessly to enrich the daily lives of children in our area who are undergoing treatment for, or are survivors of, cancer and blood related diseases. Friends of Kids with Cancer was founded in 1992 by Jill Turec, Developmental Specialist at Mercy Children’s Medical center, along with Molly Henry and Suzie Snowden, who were parents of children in treatment who witnessed their kids’ struggles and saw the need for diversions in their lives. With a very small staff and devoted volunteers, the organization continues to give children and their families a way to recapture a sense of normalcy and fun every kid deserves. Judy Ciapciak has been the executive director of Friends for the past 13 years. Her passion is tinged with bittersweet emotion; it takes special people like her to keep a positive attitude in the face of cancer: “Every child who is in treatment for cancer touches my heart and remains there forever,” she says. “Our days are continually filled with sadness and happiness. But knowing we made a positive impact in the daily life of a child suffering from cancer, if only for a minute, eases the frustrations and sadness we experience.” Friends has a three-program approach for helping to give back a sense of normalcy, keeping the family upbeat and bringing a bit of fun back to life.

RECREATIONAL SUPPORT (FUN!!) Friends of Kids with Cancer take fun very seriously. They want to make a bad day better for each child and family and project a positive atmosphere whatever the circumstances. Friends regularly crams as many toys as will fit in their designated closets at each of the pediatric cancer and oncology centers in St. Louis: St. John's Mercy, Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children's Hospital. The kids are constantly surprised with new items in the closets. Snacks and food are also provided at centers, with special parties and treats donated by volunteers. Tickets to events and games, family outings, toys, gift cards, shopping trips and numerous special events throughout the year help put a smile on faces and leave families with uplifting memories.

Helping Kids with Cancer…be Kids! Since 1992

YOU CAN HELP The number of families Friends serves is fluid and ever-changing; from newly diagnosed children to those already in treatment, those suffering a relapse and those survivors who are learning to deal with the long-term effects of this virulent disease. But regardless of their status in the cycle of cancer, all remain a part of the Friends family forever. Consider donating your time to Friends. Volunteer opportunities include shopping for toys, running errands, providing snacks, etc. Monetary donations are vital to the continued efforts and success of Friends of Kids with Cancer. Judy says: “Obviously, our greatest need is financial support; but that can only be successful by people feeling and experiencing the need and passion of our mission… helping kids with cancer…...be kids.” by Robin Garrison Leach

Chesterfield

Personalities

Each issue, we’ll be showcasing some of the many wonderful people who help Chesterfield thrive as a community. Maybe you’ll recognize one or more of them during a shopping trip or other excursion. Be sure to say Hello. Jim Foley Director of Faust Park I have worked for St. Louis County Parks for 33 years and at Faust County Park for 27. I currently live in Ellisville. I have been married for 30 years and have a daughter, son, and a new granddaughter. They all currently live in St. Louis. I attended De Smet High School, SLU for my undergraduate studies, and Webster University for graduate studies. My favorite restaurants in Chesterfield are Babbo’s and Fiesta. Some of my favorite events in Chesterfield include the Faust Park concerts and food truck events. I would absolutely encourage others to move to Chesterfield. Chesterfield has a lot to offer- great schools, safe neighborhoods, many miles of bike paths, and its location is adjacent to major highways so you can go anywhere quickly.

Jennifer Hojnacki Owner, Valley Vinyasa I have been in business for over 4 years and currently live in Webster Groves. I will have been married to Mike Hojnacki for 12 years this September and have three daughters and a son. I graduate from Parkway West High School in 1984 and from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN in 1988. My husband takes care of most of the financial aspects of the business, which is a tremendous help to me. Before starting my business, my career had been in marketing, and in addition to owning a yoga studio, I do marketing consulting for a handful of businesses. I try to shop local whenever I can, so I love the Details in Lamp & Lantern Village for their great selection of limited-quantity pieces and helpful staff. And I always love to visit St. Louis Wine Market and Tasting Room; they really know their stuff!

Mikki Monger Jones Owner, Bistro 1130 I started my restaurant business, Bistro 1130, nearly five years ago. I chose this location because of its beautiful setting with outside seating along the waterfront. Mikki, who was married to the late Bob Jones of the home building industry, has one daughter Elena who works occasionaly at the Bistro helping mom. She is still in school but is devoted to helping mom run the business. Mikki is from the Pittsburgh area- so her school wouldn’t mean anything to St. Louisans! She used to also work in the home building industry which is the work she loved best. “I enjoy creating, design and decorating, along with entertaining,” says Mikki. People always compliment the interior design in my restaurant and that alway makes me feel good. Mikki is an active lady who loves to travel and enjoy life. But she loves her work as well.

Laurel Hecht Athletic Club Director Chesterfield Athletic Club The Chesterfield Athletic Club has been in business for 40 years. I have been in the fitness industry for over 26 years. I currently live in Wildwood and am recently married. I have three daughters and two grandchildren. One of my daughters lives in St. Louis, and the other two live in Kansas City. I attended Centre College of Kentucky. The Chesterfield Athletic Club belongs to the Chamber of Commerce and St. Luke’s Hospital Spirit of Women. We also donate to numerous fund raising events in the Chesterfield area. Before I was in the wellness and fitness industry I was a travel agent. Having young children when I moved to Chesterfield, I really appreciated the great school system and the variety of sports activities available to them. It is such a wonderful family community offering something for everyone of all ages.

Jim Lordo Co-Owner, Lordo’s Diamonds Jimmy Lordo is coowner of the family owned Lordo Diamonds located in Ladue. Lordo’s has been in business since 1954. Jim now lives in Wildwood with his wife of 31 years and two children. Born and raised in St. Louis, he attended the University of Missouri. He and his brother Mike, along with many loyal employees, run the day to day business at the store which s jam packed with the most gorgeous jewels in town. And of course,, the biggest and best quality diamonds! In his off time he likes to dine at Charlie Gitto’s in Chesterfield. He has taken a liking to the new Lucky’s supermarket that just opened in town. He invites everyone in Chesterfield who has not been to his store to come by and say hello.

Jennifer Klearman Co-Owner, Massage Envy Chesterfield We opened Massage Envy Spa in Chesterfield almost 9 years ago. Massage Envy Spa in Wildwood has been open for 8 years. I live in Chesterfield, right in between the 2 locations. My husband, Mike and I have been married for 16 years. We attended Bellerive Elementary School and Parkway North High School together. I graduated from Arizona State University. Before opening the businesses, I worked as a Registered Dietitian in medical nutrition and pharmaceutical sales. We have 2 daughters who attend Wildhorse Elementary School. We moved to Chesterfield because we had friends and family who lived here. Chesterfield is a great place to raise a family. We never have to go far for shopping, parks and friendly people. One of my favorite things to do is take long hilly walks in the Wildhorse neighborhood.

Lukas Liquors on the Numerical Rating System for Wine... Some wine buyers get confused with the numerical rating system on wine. They see a wine with 88 points and another wine with 91 points. In fairness, the numeric rating system is a recent phenomenon. Robert Parker, founder of the Wine Advocate, introduced the numerical point system of grading wines in the 1970's. The turn of the 21st century saw a surge by consumers in taking these scores more seriously in their purchases of wine. The system to rate a wine is done with points, 50 to 100. You can relate this system to an A to F "grade." In general, a 85 to 90-point score on wine is considered "above average" to "good."90 to 95 points is "outstanding" and 95 to 100 points is "extraordinary." Where the rating system gets confusing is the person or organization that is issuing the ratings. Everybody's taste is different. It's up to you what magazine or critic you want to believe in. Most retailers tend to use the highest rating they can find. They believe their customers will ignore who actually gave a wine their score. A real liquor store posts ratings based on the credibility of the person, not because the score was high. Robert Parker with the Wine Advocate and Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar are the two best wine critics. They receive no endorsement money or advertising dollars from other wineries. If you are ever in doubt about what wines to buy, Robert Parker says "ask the people that sell wine for a living."
