FRONT COVER FEATURE: OCEANO BISTRO

O

ceano Bistro has been making culinary waves in Chesterfield since it opened in the summer of 2012. A sister restaurant of critically acclaimed Oceano in Clayton, it is a top-notch, first class restaurant serving up some of the freshest, most innovative and high quality seafood in St. Louis. A classy modern vibe, taste-tempting menu items, elegant ambience, superb service and exquisite presentation all come together to create what is fast becoming THE PLACE to be and be seen in Chesterfield. Here’s the rundown... The Bar: It’s lively and upscale featuring an inviting curved bar, high top tables and comfortable winery-style couch seating. Each evening, the bar is filled for happy hour and beyond. Clients of all ages gravitate here for the chic upscale setting, generous pours, big wine glasses and tasty apps. The happy hour is one of the most happening in town. There are $5 martinis, greatly discounted wines, drink specials and lots of apps at special prices too! Kobe sliders, prawns, crab cakes and salmon flat bread are among the favorites on an impressive appetizer menu. The Restaurant: Oceano balances an ambiance of elegance and casual chic in a con-

venient Chesterfield location near the Mall. Somehow the venue manages to be both expansive enough for its many clients and intimate enough for long conversations and drinks among friends. Warm wood tones are balanced by modern design and furniture, and a stone fireplace beckons for all who care to cozy up. The Food: Delectable seafood with impeccable presentation is the name of the game. Lunch- The lunch menu has a nice inexpensive option. You can order a half sandwich along with a cup of soup or half a salad for $10. The menu features a fried shrimp po boy, tuna burger, lemon crab risotto and prawn or chicken linguini, plus a variety of other sandwiches, salads, soups and entrees. Dinner- Incomparable FRESH seafood choices flown in daily include prawns, mussels, scallops, halibut and swordfish (in season), and jumbo scallops. The broth for the mussels is unforgettable. The sauteed warm water Sea Bass with a sauce of smoked-tomato butter is served with a wonderful risotto dotted with sweet corn and asparagus and is one of the house favorites. Delicious lamb, chicken and beef choices are available as well.

Sunday Brunch- Order off the menu. n March 2012, Mr. Mark Suissa purchased the Cedars at the JCA and that was the start of A NEW BEGINNING. Now known as The Cedars of Town & Country, the facility has undergone numerous positive changes and provides a myriad of new services, programs and amenities. The Cedars embraces all religions and meets the needs of all nationalities. It is totally focused on improving the community. The number one goal is to provide the best quality of care to those in need. Mary Herbst Nardoni with resident, Mary Tumminia

The Cedars is a premier skilled nursing community with a professional staff. They operate with a team approach to skilled care- everyone working together to provide the care and services one needs and deserves. It is by far one of the most beautiful and elegant facilities in Missouri. Residents include people from all areas of St. Louis, St. Louis County and the St. Charles areas. The convenient location of the Cedars makes it easily accessible. It’s close to all major highways making it easy for frequent visits. Individuals do not necessarily look for a facility near their home but often for a facility close to where they may work. It can be very convenient to visit a loved one on the way to work, during lunch or on their way home. Mary Herbst Nardoni recently joined the staff as Director of Business Development and has helped assist the team to take some new direction. She is excited and proud of the positive changes, the involvement of hospitals, organizations, community and being able to reach

out and help those in need. Kathy Lorey, Administrator, has brought 30 years of nursing experience to the Cedars and she assures the highest level of nursing care possible. It takes a team such as housekeeping, dietary, nursing, therapy, finance and all the qualified staff who make up our team. No matter what level of care you or your loved one may need, The Cedars of Town & Country is there to help. They will simplify the process, answer your questions and make a difference in your life. Everyone is welcome to come take a tour and see the difference.

Several award-winning, professional theaters offer musicals, dramas, comedies and children’s shows to families in Chesterfield and throughout the region. Accomplished local and regional actors and performers are waiting to entertain you at these theaters. Visit their websites to find a show your family will enjoy. CHESTERFIELD ARTS Chesterfield Arts presents a diverse mix of performing arts programs in music, dance and theater at various venues within the community. Chesterfield Arts is an important resource to our community. Through the development of a regional arts consortium, Chesterfield Arts acts as a facilitator, offering a calendar of art events and partnership opportunities to businesses, area arts organizations, artists and performing groups from the St. Louis region. In addition to Performing Art, Chesterfield Arts is a provider of art education classes for all ages, outdoor art projects for the city of Chesterfield, and literary art programs. The Gallery at Chesterfield Arts exhibits artwork by professional artists from the region and presents an annual exhibit of student art. CHESTERFIELD COMMUNITY THEATRE The Chesterfield Community Theatre at the West County Family YMCA is in its 22nd year of providing live theater to the area. The Community Theatre offers audiences 12 plays per year in their 370-seat auditorium. Each play is geared to a specific age group, from young children to adults. "We want to provide affordable quality live entertainment mainly geared toward families," said Ricki Marking-Camuto, department head and director. In addition to offering first-rate entertain-

ment in these age categories, the Theatre gives local actors of all ages an opportunity to learn and perform in a professional, nurturing environment. There are five different theatre companies, a musical revue company (new this year), and an improvisational team for middle and high school students. “My goal is to teach kids and teens about theater and further their appreciation of live performances”, says MarkingCamuto. Her focus is on youth development through the acting process and through giving them the opportunity to participate in the play as well as be in the audience. The Chesterfield Community Theatre season runs from September through May. Three more performances are available this spring, including “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Tiny Thumbelina”. STAGES ST. LOUIS Stages St. Louis is committed to preserving and advancing the art form of Musical Theatre. In its 26 years, STAGES has entertained over 900,000 patrons and has become the leading company for musical theatre performance and education in 44

the Midwest. In 2012, STAGES presented 124 Broadway-quality theatre performances to more than 45,000 patrons. The theatre has been awarded 28 Kevin Kline Award Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Professional Theatre in the Greater St. Louis Area, and the 2008 Arts and Education Council's Award for Excellence in the Arts. The 2013 season, running from May through October, promises to be an exciting mix of both iconic favorites and new offerings sure to delight audiences throughout the region. Beginning with “Always…Patsy Cline” in May and including favorites like “My Fair Lady”, Stages is on track to give the St. Louis area another year of outstanding Musical Theatre performances. Stages recently announced its plans to establish its Performing Arts Academy and Administrative Center in the former Kol Am Building on Chesterfield Parkway East. he mercury is rising, schools are letting out and families across the country are going on vacation. Vacations can sometimes be difficult to plan— especially if there are family members of all ages going on the trip. Families are looking for vacation spots with good food, nice hotels, and activities that everyone can enjoy at a reasonable price. One of the most popular vacation spots for families year after year is Orlando Florida’s Walt Disney World. This world-famous theme park is divided into six parts; Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Disney characters roam the entire park, thrilling small children and bringing out the kid in adults. Disney World features shopping, a variety of shows, and rides ranging from the extreme— like the roller coaster Big Thunder Mountain Railroad—to the less intense, such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant. The rides, life-sized characters, and the iconic Cinderella’s Castle appeal to both children and adults. Downtown Disney and Disney’s Boardwalk offer nightlife for teen and adult guests. Besides Disney World, tourists in Orlando can enjoy SeaWorld and Universal Studios Florida, which now includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter; the new theme park based on the Harry Potter books and films.

Ocean City, Maryland is one of the many beaches that the east coast is famous for. Ocean City features sandy beaches with waves crashing on the shore and a boardwalk that is almost three miles long. Visitors can ride their bikes or the tram before the sun sets, when the boardwalk’s arcades, rides, and performances open. Ocean City will offer free movie screenings and concerts on the beach, and Family Beach Olympics during the summer of 2013. The famous wild ponies of Assateague are a must-see that is a mere nine miles from Ocean City. For a west coast adventure, San Diego, California is a popular choice. San Diego is home to several museums and parks, including Balboa Park, the Natural History Museum, Air & Space Museum, and SeaWorld. LEGOLAND is located just outside of the city limits, and will open a LEGOLAND Hotel on April 5, 2013. The hotel will have three LEGO themes; Pirate, Kingdom, and Adventure. Of course, one of the most celebrated attractions in San Diego is the San Diego Zoo.

Family Vacations

Galveston Island (off of the coast of Texas) is another hot spot for exploring theme parks and a bit closer to St. Louis than Orlando. There are two parks on the island; Moody Gardens, which is “part theme park, part garden and houses its own rainforest, a stellar aquarium, and the Discovery Museum (“10 Best Vacations…”).” The second park, Schlitterbahn Water Park is open year-round, converting to an indoor park in the offseason. Pleasure Pier, which re-opened in 2012 after being damaged during Hurricane Ike, is home to a 100-foot tall Ferris wheel, a log flume, two roller coasters, and the tallest swing ride in Texas.

Montreal, Canada is a popular – and more affordable – alternative to a trip to France. “With its cobblestone streets, marvelous boutiques and creperies, it’s the ideal destination for those looking for a distinct change of pace (“19 Best Vacation…”).” Children can marvel at the Montreal Botanical Gardens, Insectarium, and Biodome; all of which are at Space for Life. In June of 2013, Montreal will host the Grand Prix Du Canada auto race.

Cruises and resorts in (or to) the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Mediterranean are hot because they include meals, activities, and accommodations. Vacationers love the convenience of an all-inclusive package. According to Brenda Blechle, the owner of Gulliver’s Travel, “there is {are} also several pre-arranged tours (known as escorted tours) that are designed specifically for families. They will include destinations and activities that the entire family will be able to participate in and enjoy.” Whether relaxing on the beach or screaming on the steepest slope on a roller coaster, enjoy your escape from the daily grind.
