f you are in retirement mode, you may just want to check out Mari de Ville before making a move. On this luxury estate-like campus you will find the very pinnacle of care and a luxury lifestyle. The community is all inclusive, providing every alternative- from independent living in luxury villas to 24hour skilled nursing care. A home-like atmosphere is pervasive throughout the 25-acre Town & Country retirement community. Retirees who choose the Villa Estates at Mari de Villa have an array of personalized living options. The Villa Estates units range from about 1,000 to 3,500 square feet and are very customizable. Guests can choose amenities like hardwood floors, carpeting, tile, cabinet and paint colors and they can refurbish their villa to their specifications. With amenities that include the Villa Club, an indoor/outdoor swim-

ming pool, and a variety of programs, seniors can experience active lifestyles. Residents can enjoy a number of years in their villa and when the time comes and they want more services and care, they can move to the assisted living and skilled nursing on the same campus, with the same set of faces, so it’s an easy transition. “With a ‘continuum of care,’ guests find the services they need at every level,” says president Fred Wiesehan. “It’s very important that our staff gets to know our guests and vice-versa—it creates a very comfortable, happy environment where everyone feels at home.” Services are provided by a qualified and dedicated staff, some who have been here for more than 25 years. The community is currently in an expansion phase, with architects working

on plans for a new assisted living wing east of the lake. Wiesehan says. “We’re continuing to look toward the future and how we can offer our residents even more.”

F

or a child with learning disabilities, the challenges of meeting standardized academic goals while trying to maneuver through the emotional and physical environment of public school can be overwhelming Because 4 out of 10 students in our country struggle with some form of learning disability, many children would benefit from an alternative to traditional school. The Academy of St. Louis in Chesterfield serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This faithbased school provides an environment that welcomes the individuality of each student, and offers a curriculum that challenges their personal levels of capability. The school is fully accredited by AdvancEd NCA CASI, whose high standards ensure excellence in teaching.

Academics Alone Do Not Measure Success Many students diagnosed with a learning disability or developmental delay also need help areas of social development. Social situations that may be second nature to most can cause anxiety and frustration for them. The Academy of St. Louis provides a structured social skills curriculum, giving students the opportunity to role play and learn appropriate responses to varied social interactions. Students at the Academy are challenged academically to strive to reach their highest potential in all subject areas. The Academy also provides leadership opportunities for these same students to showcase their talents and ability to lead.

The Academy of St. Louis provides a structured social skills curriculum, giving students the opportunity to role play and learn appropriate responses to varied social interactions. Graduates who fulfill and exceed the requirements set by the state of Missouri receive a high school diploma. Other students receive a certificate of completion.

Service and educational field trips throughout the St. Louis area give handson experiences to enrich each child’s view of life outside the classroom.

Customized Learning For Student Success The curriculum at the Academy integrates educational goals with functional and social skills to build competency for students in their future lives. A maximum of six students per classroom assures individual attention and learning goals that are introduced in a physically and emotionally safe environment for each of the Academy’s students. Classrooms are spacious and bright, encouraging learning. Along with the core subjects—math, language arts, religion classes, science and social studies—students are taught fine and gross motor skills, social skills, and neuro/diversity to help them gain an understanding and appreciation for their individual strengths and capabilities. Students also enjoy many other enriching classes: art, golf, drama, computer skills, nutrition, music and physical education. Occupational, speech/language and physical therapy are also available.

Learning Through Love and Dedication The faculty and administration at the Academy of St. Louis, develops student curriculum based upon individual strengths and weaknesses. Their personal and professional dedication to that goal makes the Academy the right choice for parents looking for an alternative to traditional school settings. "The Academy of St. Louis has almost doubled in size from last year. Clearly, the population of school-aged students needing an adaptable school environment is evident," states Ann Dunn, Academy Executive Director. "Attending a school that creates a specialized academic, functional and transition program is imperative for this population of students to succeed in life." The Academy of St. Louis is accepting applications for the January, 2013 semester. Call for a visit at 314-973-8997.

Little Known Facts About Our Presidents

F

or many, President’s Day is merely an excuse to get the day off of work or school. In reality, this holiday is a day set aside in February to honor the United States presidents. How much do we really know about the leaders of the free world though? Take an inside look into the different sides of the U.S.’s presidents that the country does not usually see. (According to various sources). Barack Obama • President Obama sampled dog meat, snake meat, and roasted grasshopper in Indonesia. George W. Bush • Known as the “Baseball President,” President Bush owns part of the Texas Rangers. • He was the first president to hold Tball games on the White House Lawn. Ronald Reagan • President Reagan “unofficially claimed” to have seen UFO’s twice. • He was originally chosen for the male lead in “Casablanca.”

Intro Course 2 for 1 Only $49!

John F. Kennedy • President Kennedy had a mural of a typical Massachusetts waterfront painted on the wall facing the White House pool. Franklin D. Roosevelt • Mark Twain was President Roosevelt’s favorite author. • While recovering from polio, he wrote a movie script, but never sold it to Hollywood. Dwight D. Eisenhouser • President Eisenhower liked to eat TV dinners while watching westerns. • He was the first president to be on color television. Gerald Ford • President Ford loved golf but was terrible at it and often hit people on the head with his shots. James Carter • President Carter’s first car was a 1948 Studebaker “Commander.” • Some of his favorite music includes Bob Dylan, Allman Brothers, Paul Simon, and the Marshall Tucker Band.

George Washington • When the government adopted the “New Style” calendar, Washington’s birthday technically moved from February 22 to February 11. • His dentures were made of a combination of human tooth and animal bone instead of the legendary wood. Abraham Lincoln • When President Lincoln got engaged, he and Mary Todd had only been dating for one year and Lincoln was extremely poor. Mary Todd’s family did not approve of him. • Lincoln used to store various items in his famous stovetop hat. Thomas Jefferson • President Jefferson originally designed Monticello with a billiard room in it, but never built it because Virginia outlawed billiards. • Jefferson could speak Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. James Madison • President Madison is known as America’s First Graduate Student. By: Amanda Gertner

Tasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield Top Romantic Drinks For a Great Valentine’s Day

Grand Marnier Chocolate Mousse INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb. semi sweet chocolate cut into small peices • 2 Tbs. unsalted butter • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 6 egg yolks • 6 Tbs. Grand Marnier • 6 egg whites • 4 Tbs. confectioner sugar • 1 cup heavy cream • 2 Tbs. vanilla DIRECTIONS: • Bring about 1 inch of water just to a simmer in a saucepan. Combine the chocolate, butter and 1/2 cup sugar in a heat proof bowl and set the bowl over the simmering water. Let stand without stirring until chocolate has melted. Remove bowl from heat and stir in egg yolks. Add Grand Marnier. • Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, set aside.

Planning a romantic dinner this Valentine's Day? Great drinks can complement your meal and give you a chance to impress with your cocktail skills. Champagne makes an appearance in many of these drinks, as do many of the "love" foods like chocolate and strawberry. Have fun with the cocktails you create with embellishments that fit the mood. Carve fruit into the heart shapes or garnish with chocolate covered strawberries or heart shaped cinnamon hearts. For more drinks and complete recipies visit www.idrink.com

• Beat 1 cup heavy cream, vanilla and confectioners sugar. Add whipped vanilla cream to the chocolate base and very gently fold in the egg whites with a wooden spoon. • Refrigerate until firm, at least two to three hours, but best to wait up to 24 hours.

• • •

Can be served in a martini glass, with raspberries and/or whipped cream.

Lukas Liquors on the Numerical Rating System for Wine... Some wine buyers get confused with the numerical rating system on wine. They see a wine with 88 points and another wine with 91 points. In fairness, the numeric rating system is a recent phenomenon. Robert Parker, founder of the Wine Advocate, introduced the numerical point system of grading wines in the 1970's. The turn of the 21st century saw a surge by consumers in taking these scores more seriously in their purchases of wine. The system to rate a wine is done with points, 50 to 100. You can relate this system to an A to F "grade." In general, a 85 to 90-point score on wine is considered "above average" to "good."90 to 95 points is "outstanding" and 95 to 100 points is "extraordinary." Where the rating system gets confusing is the person or organization that is issuing the ratings. Everybody's taste is different. It's up to you what magazine or critic you want to believe in. Most retailers tend to use the highest rating they can find. They believe their customers will ignore who actually gave a wine their score. A real liquor store posts ratings based on the credibility of the person, not because the score was high. Robert Parker with the Wine Advocate and Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar are the two best wine critics. They receive no endorsement money or advertising dollars from other wineries. If you are ever in doubt about what wines to buy, Robert Parker says "ask the people that sell wine for a living." R

eady for a change of pace? Hungry for a great burger and delicious milk shake? Then you’re ready for the ultimate dining experience at Cheeburger Cheeburger located at Chesterfield Mall. Stroll back in a time and place L-R: Adam Kunin, Marti Soll, Howard Soll that rocks with nostalgia, fifties and sixties music, an old fashion soda fountain, neon lights and great food and good times. It is a ‘feel good’ type of place and a fun experience for the whole family. Cheeburger choices start with a “Beginners Burger” at 5.5 oz. made with 100% all natural Angus beef. You can move on up from there to bigger and bigger burgers until you reach the famous “Pounder” – a huge 20 ounce burger built your way. As a matter of fact, your picture goes on their “Wall of Fame” if you can finish this monster. Believe it or not there are lots of photos here! To accompany your burger you’ve got to order a “Best of Both” basket of delicious, fresh cut fries with their skins on, and hand battered onion rings that most believe are the best ever! Try the dipping sauces as well. The Zesty Horseradish is so good you can’t stop dipping. While known for its burgers, Cheeburger Cheeburger also offers a variety of other choices. The grilled Portobello mushroom sandwich, melt or salad get great reviews as well as the BLT, grilled cheese, chicken fingers and grilled chicken sandwich. Cheeburger Cheeburger encourages you to “invent your own” taste, your very own “signature” Cheeburger, salad or sandwich. Select from over 30 free sandwich toppings. Everything from pineapple to peanut butter. The chipotle mayo is amazing. Choose from 11 different cheeses including smoked gouda, cream cheese, Havarti cheese, soft sharp cheddar cheese, pepper jack and, of course, all the basic cheeses you would expect. Kid’s meals are delivered in a cool “Classic Cruiser” a unique small souvenir car which adds to the experience. Top off your meal with one of their 75 milk shakes or malts made with Edy’s ice cream. The Oreo cookie shake is one of the most popular. Try a root beer float, ice cream soda, old fashion egg cream or their famous “Shake-a-Soda” mixed right at your table. An ice cold beer or glass of wine goes well with a great burger. Local owners Howard and Marti Soll, along with Adam Kunin and their friendly staff, put in a lot of time, energy and love here. “We want every customer to be thrilled by the time they leave”, Howard said. “We love seeing our customers come back again and again.” And you will, mark my word!! Stroll on in today for lunch or dinner and sample their unique personality, family wholesomeness, and nostalgic charm. Open everyday for lunch and dinner. Carry-out available.
