The Cedars of Town & Country

I

n March 2012, Mr. Mark Suissa purchased the Cedars at the JCA and that was the start of A NEW BEGINNING. Now known as The Cedars of Town & Country, the facility has undergone numerous positive changes and provides a myriad of new services, programs and amenities. The Cedars embraces all religions and meets the needs of all nationalities. It is totally focused on improving the community. The number one goal is to provide the best quality of care to those in need.

The Cedars is a premier skilled nursing community with a professional staff. They operate with a team approach to skilled care- everyone working together to provide the care and services one needs and deserves. It is by far one of the most beautiful and elegant facilities in Missouri. Residents include people from all areas of St. Louis, St. Louis County and the St. Charles areas. The convenient location of the Cedars makes it easily accessible. It’s close to all major highways making it easy for frequent visits. Individuals do not necessarily look for a facility near their home but often for a facility close to where they may work. It can be very convenient to visit a loved one on the way to work, during lunch or on their way home. Mary Herbst Nardoni recently joined the staff as Director of Business Development and has helped assist the team to take some new direction. She is excited and proud of the positive changes, the involvement of hospitals, organizations, community and being able to reach

out and help those in need. Kathy Lorey, Administrator, has brought 30 years of nursing experience to the Cedars and she assures the highest level of nursing care possible. It takes a team such as housekeeping, dietary, nursing, therapy, finance and all the qualified staff who make up our team. No matter what level of care you or your loved one may need, The Cedars of Town & Country is there to help. They will simplify the process, answer your questions and make a difference in your life. Everyone is welcome to come take a tour and see the difference.

Boating is a favorite activity at Innsbrook. No gasoline powered boats are allowed, keeping the lakes clean, quiet and pristine for swimming, kayaking, fishing and relaxing on the beach.

Summer at

INNSBROOK Less Than a Tank of Gas Away!

I

t’s summer, and that means vacation. And vacation usually means driving—a lot of driving. Before you can even think about relaxing you need to make sure the car is ready for its annual odyssey, and the kids have something—anything— to do to keep them from squabbling in the back seat and moaning the inevitable question: “Are we there yet?”

Since Innsbrook is so close to home, you can experience a laid back lakeside lifestyle while still being able to make it home for evening soccer practice or Monday morning’s work meeting. If you were going to Innsbrook, you would be there already. Just 30 minutes west of Chesterfield, Innsbrook is a family playground of 100 lakes and 7,500 acres where you can spend a day or a week splashing in the water and exploring the best of what nature has to offer—without wasting hours in the car. Both property owners and guests at Innsbrook say time spent there, whether for a summer vacation or a weekend getaway, is truly a departure from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The sun seems to travel slower across the sky and the sights and sounds of being deep in nature refresh your mind and spirit. Instead of listening to the radio on packed highways

full of typical summer vacationers, Innsbrook owners and guests hear the gentle rustle of wind in the trees, the sound of their children’s laughter on the lake, and a symphony of crickets when the sun goes down behind the hills. Since Innsbrook is so close to home, you can experience a laid back lakeside lifestyle while still being able to make it home for evening soccer practice or Monday morning’s work meeting. Mike Harmon, whose family has been coming to Innsbrook as guests for more than a decade and now own an A-frame chalet on a lake, says any length of time spent at Innsbrook is time well spent. “When we go to Innsbrook, each weekend is like going on vacation,” Mike says. “Even spending just 24 hours there is a great way to unwind. We focus our Innsbrook time on relaxing, friends, family and having fun. You can just leave all of your other cares at home.” Patty Thomas, another Innsbrook chalet owner for almost a decade, says that she and her family spend a lot of time at the Innsbrook’s lakes since they’re less than 45 minutes from St. Louis. “We go to Innsbrook almost every weekend year round,” Patty says. “Our chalet is on Lake Kitzbuhl [one of Innsbrook’s 100 lakes], so swimming, boating, floating on noodles, fishing, and watching Mother Nature walk through the seasons are our favorite pastimes. Summer is full of concerts, BBQs and hanging out with our lake neighbors on the pontoon boats.”

Both Mike and Patty have grown children (Mike also has grandkids) who come out to Innsbrook on a regular basis. “The grandkids come out several times during the summer,” Mike says. “Our older grandkids attend Camp Innsbrook, the horseback riding camp, and other kid events.” “Although our kids are older (23 and 21), they both really love coming out and relaxing,” Patty says. “Our daughter looks forward to coming out and just reading a book. Our son goes to Mizzou, and after tailgating and fun at football games, we’re only an hour away from our chalet!” So close to home that you won’t even have to stop for gas, Innsbrook has a variety of properties for every lifestyle—residential and vacation homes, recreational Aframe cabins, cottages, lakeside condos, and low-maintenance villas on the golf course. To find out more about the Innsbrook experience, you can visit www.innsbrookresort.com where you’ll find a full calendar of events, real estate listings and more. f you've noticed some unusual and sporadically-placed art "out and about" in Chesterfield lately, it's actually "Random Acts of Art", created and installed outdoors every sixeight weeks by Chesterfield Arts, the local resource for all things ART in St. Louis County. Random Acts of Art takes ordinary items and turns them into amazing, extraordinary works of art, displayed for public viewing throughout Chesterfield. The latest piece of colorful scenery "Flower Power Tower" is sprucing up 444 Chesterfield Center across from Chesterfield Mall. You'll find much to do and see at this non-profit organization, including

summer art classes for adults and kids (pottery, painting, cartooning, jewelry, watercolor, photography); The Chesterfield Arts Gallery and Boutique just across from Chesterfield Mall, featuring one-of-a-kind and limited edition paintings, photography and jewelry by regional artists on display and for purchase (M-F 10 am5 pm); and outdoor public works of art erected throughout Chesterfield, including The Awakening and the winning entry from Chesterfield Arts' University Sculpture competition to be unveiled in September! You want to get your children moving to keep them healthy and you want to engage their brains, but you don’t want to break the bank on costly activities all summer long. With a little imagination and some simple planning you can create great, fun experiences for your family that will keep everybody happy and entertained without wearing out that debit card. Think back to your own childhood, and introduce your kids to the ways you

rom the first wriggle of a baby’s body, your children express themselves and find their way through life with movements that convey their desires and personality. Dance lessons can help your child develop strength, balance and poise; more importantly, dance promotes psychological health, maturity, and offers a means of

expressing emotions in a positive, creative way. Enrolling your child in dance lessons will give them a social atmosphere to grow and learn about teamwork and cooperation; skills that will benefit them throughout life.

Alexandra School of Ballet

Renee’s Dance Studio in Ellisville has been in operation for over twenty years. Renee Johnson, owner and director, is also a dancer and instructor. A well-known and respected member of the St. Louis dance community, Renee is dedicated to teaching your children dance in a fun environment that will educate and nurture.

“Dancing is like dreaming with your feet!”- Constanze

She and her 13 dance instructors have over 100 years of combined dance experience; their resumes are as impressive as the results they achieve with their students. Their backgrounds include choreography, performance, education, gymnastics and dance types from ballet to hiphop. Classes at Renee’s are open to children ages three and up; the classes are designed to advance students not just by age but also by ability. Tap, lyrical, pom, jazz, ballet and hip-hop are offered— classes range from 30 minutes to an hour. Dance camps run throughout the summer; Diva Camp, Little Girl’s Summer Camp, Musical Theater Camp, Dance Intensive and Open Technique Classes. Renee’s studio also offers enrollment in their Competitive Dance Team. Renee opened a second dance studio, Dance Floor, in Chesterfield to make it more convenient for children in that area to attend. The studio offers the same classes with various schedules to suit its students. The Alexandra School of Ballet was established in 1949 to provide professional ballet training for students. Over the years, it has added classes in other types of dance as well.

uly and August are ideal months to pack up a basket of your favorite foods, grab your favorite people and head down to the neighborhood park for a picnic. Somehow, simple meals taste better when they’re shared beneath the broad limbs of a tree or seated along the rough bench of a sturdy picnic table. You don’t have to over- think or over –plan it; the best part of a picnic is the spontaneity. Everything you need for a safe, fun-filled afternoon at the park is right at your fingertips.

Food Safety: Keep Cold Foods Cold and Hot Foods Hot

Simple Ideas For Fun Picnics are great for relaxing, but kids aren’t fans of relaxing. Cook up some activities to make the day fun for even the antsy-est member of your troop. Have a scavenger hunt. Write it up ahead of time; bring a prize for the winner. Look for pictures in the clouds. Bring bubbles, bug keepers (empty bottles filled with moist grass), a guitar—if you dare—and fishing poles if you’re near a lake. Remember “Mother-May-I”? “Red Light, Green Light”? “Hide and Seek”? Give your kids the same memories.

It’s Picnic Time

Enjoy Family Time and Make Some Summer Memories

Picnic baskets are fine for cutlery, cups, napkins and foods that don’t need to be kept cool, but everything else should go in a cooler. Freeze

Pack These Essentials

water bottles and place them on top of your food—not only will they keep things cold, you also drink them. Your cooler should register 40 degrees or below. Pack raw foods in the bottom of your cooler so their juices won’t leak onto other food. Don’t transport your cooler in the trunk. When you get to your picnic spot, put the cooler in a shady place and open it as little as possible.

Use Common Sense When Cooking and Eating Outdoors Make sure all meat is cooked thoroughly. It’s a good idea to take a meat thermometer with you. According to www.foodsafety.gov , grilled burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees; chicken breasts, 165 degrees. When cooking at the site, don’t use the same platter for both raw and cooked meat. Employ the “Two Hour Rule” to your meal: perishable food should go in the cooler within two hours after eating. If you pick up a bucket of cooked chicken or other already-cooked meals, you should eat them within one hour of purchase.

Protect Yourself Against Insects You’re outside. There will be bugs. But you can still enjoy your picnic. Try these tips. Bees: Wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfumed soaps or deodorants. Mosquitoes: They’re most active at dusk and through the night. Wear repellant and reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Ticks: Insect repellant helps, but nothing can fully protect you from ticks. On windy days, ticks fall from trees and bushes. Check yourself and your children throughout the day. Follow basic safety directions to remove ticks. If a rash or other symptoms develop, see your doctor.

Where to Picnic in Chesterfield/West County Sure, you could have a picnic in your back yard, but why not expand your fun? With multiple city parks as well as county parks within a short drive of anywhere in the West County area, you can have a picnic with a new view every week of summer. Go to www.stlouisco.com and look under “Parks and Recreation” to find a list of parks, their amenities, hours and directions. Many offer pavilions, tables, playgrounds, fishing areas and hiking trails. For city parks, contact your local government office for information and locations- www.chesterfield.mo.us. SUMMER TRAVEL TIPS

You’re Bags Are Packed, You’re Ready to Go... Don’t Forget These Steps to Keeping Your Identity Safe

Y

our wallet is akin to a miniature directory of your identity. Think about it. Your driver´s license, credit card, debit card, medical insurance card and other numbers are all stored together. However, in the event of a lost wallet or stolen wallet, having all of this information in one place greatly increases your risk of identity theft. ProtectMyID (www.protectmyid.com) has nine great tips for travelers. 1. Keep a record. If your wallet and everything in it were suddenly missing, you´d need to know what you had lost. In a personal notebook you keep in a secure place at home, write down all of the information from the front and back of your credit, debit, driver´s license, medical insurance and other important cards. 2. Limit your cards. What you don´t carry in your wallet is just as important as what you do carry. Only carry what you need on a daily basis. If you have multiple credit cards, only carry the one you use most often. Don´t write PINs or passwords on the back of your credit or debit cards or on pieces of paper in your wallet. 3. Protect your SSN. Your Social Security number shouldn´t be on anything you regularly carry in your wallet. If any of your identification cards from a school, library or gym use your SSN as your member number, ask the organization for a randomly selected number and a new card. Be sure to shred the old one. Carry your actual Social Security card as infrequently as possible, because getting it replaced can be a hassle.

Intro Course 2 for 1 Only $49!

4. Make the calls. As soon as you´re certain that your wallet or important cards are miassing, call the issuers of your credit, debit, medical and driver´s license cards. Notify them of the situation and ask for a new account or identification number. Verify that your old numbers are no longer active. Even if your wallet is returned, you can´t know for certain that someone hasn´t written down your card numbers to use at a later time. 5. File a police report. If identity theft does result from a lost wallet or stolen wallet, a police report filed at the time of theft will establish credibility. Even if you are traveling, file a report with local law enforcement. Always ask for a copy of the report for your personal records. If you later need to contest fraudulent charges or activity on your accounts, you´ll already have the report on hand. 6. Contact the credit bureaus. A thief may find enough information in your wallet to open new accounts or simply use your existing cards to commit fraud. By placing fraud alerts with the three national credit bureaus, you can help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name without your express permission. 7. Watch your account statements. Checking for the signs of identity theft is essential in the months following a lost or stolen wallet. Review each account statement, including your explanation of benefits (EOB) letters from your medical insurer. Look for purchases, transactions or services you didn´t authorize or receive. If you suspect fraud, call the number on your statement immediately.

C 8. Review your credit reports and with services such as ProtectMyID, it’s simple. Reviewing your monthly statements will only indentify fraud on your existing accounts. To identify new accounts fraudulently opened in your name, be sure to review your credit reports regularly especially in the months following a lost wallet or stolen wallet. A new account that you didn´t open and don´t control is a serious threat to your credit and identity. 9. Learn from the experience. If you´ve already dealt with a lost wallet or stolen wallet, be sure you´re prepared to handle the same situation if it were to happen again. Use the tips on this page and consider signing up for identity theft protection that combines daily credit monitoring with advanced detection and support features. - 9 tips from Experian’s ProtectMyID (www.protectmyID.com)

Tasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield Recipe: Chilled Vichyssoise From Scarecrow Executive Chef Michelle Parker 1095 Chesterfield Pkwy., Chesterfield, MO 636-536-9440 scarecrowstl.com INGREDIENTS • 5 Leeks – white only – chopped • 1/2 Yellow Onion - chopped • 15 Peeled Potatoes (any potato will do) – coarse chopped • 4 Cups Chicken Stock • 1/2 Cup Beef Broth (Campbell’s or any canned is sufficient) • 1/2 Quart Heavy Cream • Salt & Pepper • Combine leeks, onion and potatoes in a stock pot and cover with water – simmer for 1-2 hours. • Remove from heat and blend (stick blender works best, but a stand blender will work fine) until smooth – puree. • Add chicken stock and beef broth, maintaining a thick-smooth consistency. • Refrigerate until completely chilled and whisk in heavy cream until mixed thoroughly.

• Salt and pepper to taste. • Garnish with chopped chives and enjoy. • For a unique and personal twist, try adding avocado or cucumber to give your Vichyssoise additional flavor. Enjoy this chilled soup with a crisp glass of white wine such as a dry sauvignon blanc. Happy Summer and Enjoy!

Wine and Beer Tips From Lukas Liquor Superstore 15920 Manchester Rd • 636-227-4543 • www.lukasliquorstl.com Compliments of Gary Bilder, proud owner!

STORING WINE & BEER: What are some guidelines for the proper storage of wine and beer if you don't have a cellar? Wine loves three things: consistent cool temperature, the dark and to be stored as far away from your central air conditioner as possible. Your basement, because it is underground, is a consistent cool temperature all year. Find a dark corner to set up your racks. Keep your wine away from air conditioners. These are de-humidifiers and will suck the moisture out of the cork. Store wine on its side to keep the cork moist. If the wine is sealed with a Stelvin Closure, (screw cap) you can store these bottles upright. Note: You should never buy wine from a store that stands their wine upright. Beer should always be stored upright. Sediment from the beer will settle at the bottom of the bottle. Note: before you store beer in your basement make sure it is a beer that can be aged.

Viviano’s is a colorful, unique shopping and dining experience. This family owned and operated business just opened about six months ago and is truly a delight to visit. Owners Becky Parker and Michael and Beth Viviano are always on the premises and are ready and waiting to welcome you with open arms, a smile, and great food and prices. The Deli- the cases and counters are jam-packed with goodies such as Volpi salami, Boars Head meats, a variety of fresh olives, imported cheeses, sausages, antipasto, different salads, and more. The Grocery- reminiscent of an old-fashioned time local grocery store where people meet their neighbors, stop to chat, have a coffee, and the owners and staff joke with the customers and treat them like friends. The merchandise is top-notch and the aisles are filled with a blend of specialty items as well as every day necessities. There is a great selection of pasta sauces, salad dressings, olive oils, imported vinegars, crushed Italian tomatoes, escargot, seasonings, homemade bread crumbs, fresh parmesan cheese, anchovies, Italian candies, and the list goes on. Prices are reasonable and actually less than the major grocery stores. The Café- featuring huge deli sandwiches (some are 4 inches high); delicious homemade pastas; freshly made soups including Wedding soup; Italian pressed sandwiches (better known as paninis); salads; and appetizers (try the calabrese-layers of fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil with olive oil and balsamic vinegar-bellisimo!). Cannoli, tiramisu and brownies are some of the desserts offered. Their specialty sandwich is the Festa Italiano-hot roast beef in au jus layered on Muffaleta bread basted with garlic sauce and topped with provel cheese. To die for! Umbrella tables are scattered throughout for comfortable seating. Order your food at the deli counter then shop while you wait for it to be made to order. There are to-go containers to take home leftovers. What else does Viviano’s offer? Fresh bread from the Hill delivered daily, pastries from Missouri Bakery every Saturday, an excellent selection of wines including the straw covered Chianti bottles, a coffee bar featuring Kaldi’s coffee, Italian sodas, Italian merchandise including red, white and green t-shirts, caps, etc., Italian cookies, liquors, gift items and more. Catering- from box lunches, deli trays to a complete dinner. Take out- call ahead for your order. Viviano’s also offers live singing on select evenings! Go soon. I assure you after one visit you’ll be hooked on Viviano’s like I am! Hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and till 9 p.m. on Friday & Saturday evenings. Closed Sundays. Located in Four Seasons Plaza near 141 and Olive Blvd. Call 314-878-1474. Viviano’s also has a Fenton location at the intersection of Old Hwy 30 and 141. Visit online at www.vivianosmarket.com
