Welcome! Summer has come to Chesterfield! We have had a great start to our Summer Concert Series, with much more to come. Our concerts feature live music, food and drink, and children’s entertainment. Each week we have a “Cooling Zone,” courtesy of Commerce Bank, as well as fun activities with our friends at Renewal by Anderson. We are

happy to partner with several area businesses to bring these free concerts to the community, and we thank our sponsors for their support. Our next community event is the second annual Trivia Night, which will be held at the Jewish Community Center on Friday, August 22. Please join us for this great evening of trivia, games, food and fun. Registration is available online, or by calling the Chamber office at 636-532-3399. As we wrap up the summer, we will begin preparing for our Annual Gumbo Flats Pumpkin Run, which will take place on Saturday, October 25. This is a popular community event that brings more

than 1,000 runners to the Chesterfield Valley. Watch for more information as we get closer to race day. As always, we are happy to share the good news of what is happening in and around Chesterfield. Academic ROI: Maryville Delivers on Student Expectations Maryville University Campus

Outstanding internships, such as those provided by our corporate partner, Rawlings, clearly lead to exciting job opportunities.

I

n a time when parents and students demand a return on investment, Maryville University delivers. In fact, Maryville recently ranked in the top 15 percent of all major universities in the country for the economic value of its academic degrees. One reason for this outstanding recognition is that Maryville is committed to creating partnerships with St. Louis corporations that provide numerous opportunities for students to gain practical, professional experience in the classroom and through meaningful internships. “Employers look for students who attain skills during their college career so they can impact business operations beginning Day One,” says Jason Williams, director of Maryville’s Rawlings Sport Business Management program. “Outstanding internships, such as those provided by our corporate partner, Rawlings, clearly lead to exciting job opportunities.” Formalizing and strengthening the partnership, Rawlings named the sports business management program at Maryville in 2013. Maryville is highly ranked for its academic ROI by Educate to Career, a non-profit firm that measures the earnings and employability that a university provides to its students, relative to cost. The percentage of graduates employed in their field of study, average salaries earned by recent graduates and the percentage of graduates hired within one year of degree completion are just some of the metrics used to calculate ROI. In May, Rawlings hired two Maryville graduates who are former interns—Courtney McKinley, assistant category manager for apparel, and Marc Telander, category manager for bats. McKinley began her internship with Rawlings in the fall of 2012. The opportunity helped her integrate into company processes smoothly, says David Hill, senior vice president and general manager of the Rawlings field and court division. “Courtney is an excellent addition to our team. I’m impressed with her poise, her grasp of concepts, and her ability to communicate effectively with our sales team,” Hill said. As an intern, McKinley conducted focus groups, wrote product briefs and communicated with different departments. “Having the internship gave me an upper hand in the job market,” she says. “Internships are great because you put yourself in a new environment. The experience teaches you through trial and error what kind of person you are and what your work ethic is.” Telander earned his bachelor’s degree from Maryville in sport business management in 2011. Throughout his courses, the opportunity to work on professional projects and applications in the classroom was a key advantage,

he says. Telander experienced a number of relevant internships, including those with the St. Louis Blues and the St. Louis Rams. Although the tasks he performed were often “bare bones,” they paid off. “Eventually, I was trusted with more responsibility. My Rawlings internship became pretty much what I’m doing now in my job,” he says. Telander is currently enrolled in Maryville’s MBA program, with a concentration in sport and entertainment management.

EXPERT INSIGHT: Jason Williams, director of Maryville University’s Rawlings Sports Businesss Management Program (seated atop desk, left) leads a class discussion with Kurt Hunzeker, senior director of brand marketing for Rawlings

Maryville University’s sport business management program is a huge asset to Rawlings, says Kyle Murphy, director of products. “The students are ambitious and sports-focused people who are interested in being involved in product development. They need to step in running at Rawlings, and Marc Telander was able to do that. The program and his classes helped that along.” Rawlings is just one example of how Maryville University corporate partnerships provide excellent return on investment for students. Through such relationships, students gain relevant work experience before they graduate, leading to jobs with many of the St. Louis region’s most soughtafter companies. h, what to do when the newness of summer has lost its charm, the kids have become restless and the video games have lost their appeal. How about a road trip? There are many wonderful destinations just a tankful of gas from home that will breathe new life into your summer. Here are few great ideas for some memorable family excursions... Arcola, Illinois (169 miles) Just a little more than two hours drive from St. Louis lies this quaint, historic community that offers plenty of activities for the whole family. Arcola’s claim to fame includes Rockome Gardens Theme Park, the Broom Corn Festival (the week-end after Labor Day), a Raggedy Ann and Andy Museum and the Amish Interpretive Center. Situated in Douglas County, Arcola is home to Illinois’ largest Old Order Amish Settlement. The rural area of town is lined with Amish homes, businesses and schools as well as horse-drawn buggies. A wonderful place to purchase Amish hand made furniture and crafts. The Rockome Gardens Park offers the opportunity to learn more about the local Amish community and watch the artisans in action. Hop on a buggy ride or train ride, try your your hand at fishing, ride a horse or best of all, sample the wonderful Amish food served family style in their own restaurant. You can enjoy all that Arcola has to offer in one long day or spend the night at one of the reasonably priced hotels close to the area. Either way, I’m sure you will visit more than once!

Personalities

Each issue, we’ll be showcasing some of the many wonderful people who help Chesterfield thrive as a community. Maybe you’ll recognize one or more of them during a shopping trip or other excursion. Be sure to say Hello. Maureen Wilson

Marcus Manning

Libbey Tucker

Owner, Pinot’s Palette

Athletic Director, Maryville University

Pinot’s Pallet just celebrated our One Year anniversary! I live in Dardenne Prairie. I have been married for 13 years and have one son, Patrick. He was born in Springfield, MO, and grew up in St. Peters. I attended Parkway North and MIZZOU. My husband, Phil, helps out every now and then and is known as bartender Phil. I belong to the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Before Pinot’s Pallet, I had most recently been a pharmaceutical representative for over 15 years in the Chesterfield/West County area. Chesterfield is a great place to start a business. Chesterfield has become a destination here, with all of the different things to do, such as the Amphitheater, Butterfly House, Parks,Trails, and events, concerts, and more. Plus, Chesterfield was great to work with in starting Pinot’s Palette. My favorite restaurants include Firehouse, Kampai, Smashburger, and Crazy Bowls and Wraps.

I have been the Director of Athletics at Maryville University for three years and currently live in Chesterfield. I have been married for five years to Sarah Manning. I attended Jennings High School, Quincy University (undergraduate), and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Master’s). I’m a member of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and currently serve on the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Before working at Maryville, I worked at Champs Sports as a Manager Trainee/Assistant Manager. My favorite stores in Chesterfield are Cole Haan, Hagger, and Nike. My favorite restaurants in Chesterfield are Annie Gunn’s, Charlie Gitto’s, and Chick-fil-A.

Economic Development Director, City of Chesterfield

Earl Larson

Angela Carter

Ginger Hedrick

Owner,Wildhorse Dental

Co-Owner, Mary Tuttle’s & Amelia’s

Owner, Pilates of West County

I’ve been in business for 32 years, 25 in Chesterfield. I live in the Wildhorse Subdivision. I have one son, Grant, who will be attending Arizona State University in the fall. He and I are both from St. Louis. In fact, I can trace ancestors back nearly 200 years in the St. Louis area. I attended Riverview Gardens High School, MIZZOU, and University of Missouri Kansas City Dental School. I keep my son busy as a jack of all trades at the office. I belong to the Chesterfield Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Before opening my business, I did just about anything to get through school, including janitor, banquet waiter, warehouse fork-truck operator, grocery checker, and a pharmaceutical testing chemist. My favorite event in Chesterfield is the County Fair and Air Show because the Blue Angels make so many low passes over my dental office on Long Road.

Mary Tuttle’s will have been in business for 30 years this July and Amelia’s has been open for six years now. I live in Lake St. Louis. I have been married for 15 years and have a son, Grant, who is 11 and two step kids. I attended Lafayette High School. I work with my mother, Mary (the Mary in Mary Tuttle’s). I work with the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Before going to work with my mom, I worked for 10 years in banking and was VP in Human Resources there when I left. I belong to the Chesterfield Athletic Club and enjoy working out there often. The people who are working there and the members are so great! I try to shop and eat local as much as possible. A few of my favorite restaurants are Annie Gunn’s,Villa Farotto, Syberg’s, and Salina’s.

I’ve been in business for 14 years. I’ve been married for 25 years and have two daughters. They both help out with my business. I attended the University of Oklahoma. Before opening my business I was a professional ballet dancer. I travelled throughout the US, Mexico, Russia and Eastern Europe where I performed. Upon moving to St. Louis, I danced for St. Louis Ballet as well as the Muny. I also taught dance for many years. After much time of training and certification, I transitioned into teaching Pilates. I had the privilege of training and receiving my certification from Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates protégé. Romana hand-picked me to be a teacher for Romana’s Pilates. In addition to working with various clients, I also train apprentices to teach Pilates. I have a diverse clientele – I work all levels from individuals living with chronic pain to high end amateur and professional athletes.

31

I have worked for the City of Chesterfield for nine years. I have been working in the economic development field for almost 20 years. I live in Wentzville. I’m married to my husband Larry, and we just had our 4th year anniversary. I’m active in the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and have been on the board of the West County YMCA in the past. My favorite things to do in Chesterfield include walking through Central Park and the Riparian trail early in the morning. Seeing all the wildlife and the quiet peacefulness as the sun rises above the lake is a great way to start the day. And of course… shopping! There are so many choices. My favorite events in Chesterfield are the free concerts at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. They are so great and it’s fun to gather with my friends, listen to some great music and relax.

Lukas Liquor Superstore “Lukas Gives Back” Gary Bilder, proud owner of Lukas Liquor Superstore believes in “Giving Back” to his community. For 14 years he has been involved with a number of local charities. Today he is focused on Circle of Concern and Friends of Kids with Cancer. Lukas Liquor recently established an exciting new program to benefit these local charities. It’s called “Lukas Gives Back.” Every month they feature different items to support the program. For every bottle sold of these items $1 is donated to one of these charities. Each month features several different brands of liquor. The entire staff is involved in the program and its success has been tremendous. Many dollars have been raised for these two deserving charities. Visit Lukas Liquor and help out with this charitable venture. Or, as Gary suggests, make some time in your own life to volunteer to help

out these people in need. When you ‘Give back’ you ‘Get back.’ Other good things happening at Lukas is that they now serve liquor by the drink- and at VERY reasonable prices. It gives you a chance to taste a very expensive brand of liquor at a fraction of the cost. Lukas also has a teaching facility on site with wine, beer and spirit classes. Classes normally cost around $10 depending on the brands. They also host free wine tastings every Saturday from 1-4 pm. Lukas has a party planning department, wedding registry, the best keg selection in St. Louis, curbside loading, and even a personal shopper! Lukas Liquor is one of the largest and best full service liquor stores in St. Louis. Offering 24,000 square feet-3,800 wines,

Gary Bilder

1,500 spirits, 1,200 beers and a full line of cigars. There are lots of accessories too. You will be shocked at the prices also. They are lower than most stores in town. Check out the website for lots of information! In Gary’s opinion, “locally owned” means giving back to the community they do business in as well as supporting the community. Get to know Gary and Lukas Liquor. You’ll be glad you did. Lukas Liquor is located at 15920 Manchester Road at the corner of Clarkson and Manchester. 636-227-4543. Visit www.lukasliquorstl.com.

Circle of

CONCERN Help and Care for Nearly a Half-Century

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Circle of Concern relies on volunteers to take care of daily tasks—interviewing clients, answering phones, accepting and distributing groceries—freeing their small staff to handle the overall operation. Students seeking service hours are welcome, too; individuals needing to log community service are also eligible to volunteer. Training is provided and certain restrictions apply. Internships are available for college students wanting to gain practical experience in social services, fund development, communications and nonprofit management. HOW YOU CAN HELP Donations of food and personal care items are vital to the continuing assistance Circle of Concern gives, day in and day out, 365 days of the year. You can also make a financial contribution to Circle by sending a check or with your credit card via their website. Though donations of furniture and clothing are not accepted, annual programs ask for other items; gift cards, new toys, school supplies and more. To participate in the Holiday Adoption Program contact Circle in September or early October. By Robin Garrison Leach

I

n the mid-1960s, a group of church congregations met to discuss the problem of rural poverty in western St. Louis County. They arranged their chairs in a circle, huddled together in prayer and inspiration and created what is now known as Circle of Concern. Circle of Concern, formally organized in 1967 from those humble beginnings, continues to perform a vital service to families and individuals in need. Each month, this organization feeds more than 2,200 hungry people and provide financial assistance on a case-by-case basis to over 500 families living in western St. Louis County. Once a month, qualified families come to Circle of Concern for a supply of fresh food and personal care items that has been collected through donations or bought with donated money. The food supply is meant to help families save on groceries, so that they can pay housing and other needs. Financial assistance is considered for emergencies to families needing basic necessities; prescriptions, rent, gas vouchers and utilities if the funds are available.

YEAR-ROUND SERVICES In addition to their food pantry, Circle of Concern has many annual programs and opportunities to assist families: A Back to School Supply Drive each summer helps provide students with supplies for the upcoming school year. Camperships give numerous children the opportunity to attend local camps and programs. The Birthday Club celebrates the birthdays of Circle family’s children under 12 with a gift. Often, they also receive a Birthday Bag, with cake mix, icing and party favors. Winter Holiday Programs exemplify the spirit of the holidays by distributing Holiday Baskets of food and a blanket for Thanksgiving. A Toy Drive helps supply gifts for Toy Day at Christmas, and Circle matches families with sponsors for their Holiday Adoption Program. Scholarships to be used for college or trade schools can be applied for each spring; high school seniors from low and moderate income families qualify for consideration.

Yellowstone Cafe

Grocery Store Cafe • Deli

By Pat Catanzaro, Publisher

Y

ellowstone has lots of loyal guests and it’s no wonder why. For 17 years, owner John Marciano has been committed to offering great, high quality food cooked-to-order, prompt service, reasonable prices and a clean interesting atmosphere.Yellowstone is a legend in its own time and still remains one of the outstanding tried and true restaurants in Chesterfield. This locally owned and operated restaurant appeals to both young and old alike. Yellowstone just placed #1 in 2014 as Best Seafood by the Out & About readers in the “Best of Chesterfield” contest. THE DECOR: The restaurant has a warm cozy feeling and is stuffed full of antique fishing, hunting and camping memorabilia. Old lures, outboard motors, paddles, nets, decoys and even boats hang from the ceiling. What an exceptional collection! It is often referred to as an outdoor museum. If you have any old fishing items bring them by. They actively collect memorabilia from their clients. LET’S DO LUNCH: Newly launched at Yellowstone- a lunch menu served from 11 am to 4 pm with all items under $10 (some only just above $7). Entrees include hamburgers, a fisherman’s platter, grilled Basa Caesar salad, grilled chicken and clams all served with one or two sides. Want a drink with lunch? Coffee, tea, Bloody Mary’s, wine and beer cost only $2.49. Talk about a deal! DINNER HERE: Even though Yellowstone is well-known for the walleye and grouper, the beef here is top-notch, from the black angus burgers to the French cut pork chop and the 16 oz. juicy corn-fed Iowa steak. Don’t forget to ask about the daily specials. Most dinner entrees are served with a small garden salad and veggie. The crab cakes are absolutely wonderful. I guess so, since the restaurant is noted for their excellent seafood! Tendersweet clams, frog legs, grouper, chicken florentine and a variety of pasta dishes served with a small garden salad can also

be found on the menu. Appetizers include wings, the venerable toasted ravioli, lobster rangoon, a river platter and more local favorites. Sandwiches, which are served with a house made slaw or one side, include rib eye steak, grilled tilapia, grilled grouper and a chicken club. They even serve shakes here! Talk about variety. THE SALMON RUN: Every July and August,Yellowstone features its Salmon Run. It offers the freshest Keta Alaskan salmon in town from the world’s most pristine waters. For only $15.95 you can enjoy a Salmon dinner cooked in a variety of styles-barbeque, honey dijon, lime-grilled, native or choose your own way. Don’t miss this specialyou won’t find a better salmon dinner at this price in St. Louis. Yellowstone offers a full-service bar and features happy hour daily. They offer a children’s menu, gift certificates and carry out. LOCATION: Situated in Lamp & Lantern Village with easy access on and off the highway, it is close to the intersection of Clayton and Hwy. 141 not far from Hwy. 40. Open for lunch and dinner Mon. to Sat. and Sun. for dinner only. Be sure to also visit its sister restaurant Lazy River Grill which has an All Occasion Room for 2040 guests.
