Fall brings cooler air and changing leaves, along with the High Holiday celebrations we all look forward to. And as the season changes, fall 2024 at PAS brings a wealth of opportunities for our congregation to worship, learn, and socialize.
Please join us for lectures and programs, guest speakers and visiting scholars, and consistent worship options. Our High Holiday worship as we welcome the year 5785 begins with Erev Rosh Hashanah on October 2. We continue our Yachad (together service on the second day of Rosh Hashanah). Teens and youth have a variety of options to choose from, including special activities as we look to the future. Young families with children ages 4-10 don’t want to miss out on being part of a very special trip to Israel next June, led by Rabbi Cosgrove.
Take a look at the many options on tap this fall and please come find what interests you.

THE DEEPER MEANING OF THE AVINU MALKEINU PRAYER
Sat / Sep 28 / 8:15 pm / 87th St and Online
Elie Kaufner
Avinu Malkeinu – "Our Father, Our King" – is one of the core prayers of the High Holidays. But what does it mean? The Talmud tells the story of how and why this prayer was written, offering a very different understanding of what we might have expected. As we prepare together to pray on High Holidays, we will look at the story of the writing of Avinu Malkeinu and a number of related Talmudic stories to explore this prayer in a new light. Our beautiful and traditional Selihot services will follow the learning.

Larry Zakarin
Every Saturday morning, regardless of where he is in the world, Larry Zakarin goes to shul. His upbringing in a traditional Conservative home gave him a desire to continue that dedication as an adult, which helped draw him to PAS in 2004 along with his wife, Amy, after they moved to the Upper East Side. Ever since then, his involvement in volunteer efforts and hard work at PAS have put him in the spotlight, leading to his being named a 2024 Simhat Torah honoree.
Larry and Amy, when looking for a nursery school for their now 19-year-old son, Hank, were instantly drawn to PAS’ Penn Family Early Childhood Center. “We joined PAS and started attending services and becoming part of the PAS world,” Larry said. “Soon after, Rabbi Cosgrove joined PAS, and this was a gamechanger for me. Rabbi Cosgrove is my first rabbi that I was able to say is my rabbi.”
Shabbat and celebrating the holidays where they felt comfortable was important as they raised their family, which also includes their son Adam, 16. “PAS fits a lot of our wants and has for sure become a major part of our lives, during good, bad, and hard times,” Larry said.
HATAN TORAH Larry Zakarin
Larry’s involvement with the Men of a Certain Age group spearheaded his devotion to volunteerism and led to his training as a lay leader. His involvement with Hashkamah Minyan, the “early service,” became a cornerstone of his efforts at the synagogue.
When Larry lost his dad in 2011, he found his way to the morning minyan. “I worked through my loss, and my boys had lost their grandpa, but they gained 15 new grandpas through Hashkamah,” Larry said. “I was more than 30 years younger than most of the group’s members, but they were so inviting.”
When the pandemic hit in the spring of 2020, Hashkamah in person had to end. Larry came up with the idea to hire a Torah reader to keep the group together so that they can meet daily and connect. As a result, they did daily minyan on Zoom as an alternative to weekly Hashkamah. Larry said, “we were able to keep our services going. In 2022, when it was safe to resume in person, Rabbi Cosgrove and discussed how to start things again, in particular the Hashkamah Saturday Minyan. He wanted it to be more inclusive, including inviting women to attend. We expanded to follow the inclusiveness track of PAS. The lay-led service is now a key part of PAS’ weekly schedule, with consistent participation from PAS members.”
Larry, the division head for accessories, outerwear and swim at Jordache, said his professional strategies from the workplace often inform his projects at PAS: “I use the same approach of a willingness of working towards change—at PAS, our ability to be nimble, to open the door to modern times, and to change allows us to keep getting better.”
Larry helped with the new siddur launch and was a member of the Catering Committee and is now on the Advisory Council and the Ritual Advisory Committee.
He feels fortunate to have been tapped by special members of different eras and felt “heard in a big place. PAS is my shul, in good times and bad times. I want to be known as a congregant.”
As for the future, Larry said his goal is to increase the number of people in PAS pews.
KALLAT BERESHIT
Vicki Warner
Vicki Warner, who loves being involved at PAS, says there’s nothing better than “being a PAS ambassador.”
Her record of involvement and volunteerism is vast—she chaired the Kol Nidrei fundraising campaign for the past three years and is a member of the Membership, Inclusion, and Interfaith Committee.
She participates in adult education classes, organizes logistics for trips abroad, and frequently attends services—all evidence of her tremendous love for and dedication to the PAS community, where she’s been a member since 2013.
“Vicki personifies our biblical matriarch Rebecca—full of smarts, gusto, and zrizut, which is a quality of moving through the world with purpose and intention, of creating one’s own luck and unabashedly helping others do the same. This is Vicki. This is Vicki in everything she does. We are blessed to have her in our community,” reflects Debbie Cosgrove.
Vicki loves to travel, and shortly after joining PAS, she was asked to chair a synagogue trip to Poland. During that trip, she became passionate about the work of JCC Krakow, and then became chair the board of the Friends of JCC Krakow, and has been back many times. As a co-chair of the 2023 Women’s Portugal trip, she was instrumental in its success. Rabbi Lori Koffman says, “Vicki brought her customary enthusiasm to the trip, helped 'corral' participants when needed, was thoughtful as always as we developed the itinerary, and was a wonderful sounding board.” Vicki also previously chaired the PAS Women’s Network. She is on the Board of Directors for UJAFederation and is an active participant of their Women's Executive Committee.
Israel and its future are very important to Vicki, and she values the support that PAS has shown to Israel especially over the past year, since October 7. She has been to Israel on several trips and participated with her family on the PAS mission in February 2024. An activist, she is a volunteer for Brothers for Life, which was created and run by Israeli veterans to care for wounded soldiers.
Vicki, a residential real estate agent in Manhattan, raised her two daughters, Haley and Emi, in the city. She’s passionate about adult education classes, sits on the adult education committee, and enjoys attending synagogue programs and lectures.
Her passion for the community is clear. “I love that PAS wants everyone to be welcome,” she says. “PAS meets you where you are . It’s really about showing up.”
HATAN TORAH
OUR COMMUNITY
We continue to reflect on the situation in Israel and pray for our family and friends who endure daily life there, coping with the ripple effects of the war. As October 7, the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack approaches, we note the significance of this date, the plight of the hostages who have yet to be released, and the pain their families still suffer as they await freedom.
Book Launch
SEP 25 / 7:00 PM / 87ST AND ONLINE WITH JUJU CHANG
ABC News’ Nightline Anchor Juju Chang will interview Rabbi Cosgrove about his latest book, For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today
The attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, which killed more Jews in one day than at any time since the Holocaust, has drawn a clear and irreversible demarcation in time. The Jewish community woke up to an unrecognizable new reality, witnessing first the horror of the atrocities followed by the stark rise in antisemitism, the world’s oldest hatred. But even in this dark hour, the Jewish community is experiencing something profound and beautiful: a deep, abiding connection to community, culture, and faith. Drawing on the rich trove of Jewish history and tradition, Rabbi Cosgrove helps readers make sense of this fraught time.

For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today
A poignant exploration of what it means to be Jewish today, from a leading voice in modern Judaism, Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove. Pre-order your copy today.
For Jews today, the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7—a vicious assault that killed more Jews in one day than any time since the Holocaust—has drawn a clear and irreversible demarcation in time. The Jewish community woke up to an unrecognizable new reality on that day, witnessing first the sheer horror of the atrocities in Israel, followed immediately by the stark rise in antisemitism, the world’s oldest hatred, in its wake.
But even in this dark hour, the Jewish community is experiencing something profound and beautiful: a deep, abiding connection to community, culture, and faith. Drawing on the rich trove of Jewish history and tradition, Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, one of today’s most influential thought leaders and spiritual guides, helps readers make sense of this fraught time. With warmth and wisdom, Rabbi Cosgrove explores the challenging questions embedded in the soul of contemporary Jewry. Where did all this antisemitism come from, and was it always there? How have Israel and Zionism shaped American Judaism, and what ties us and divides us today? How do we practice Judaism and understand our place in a world that has, without fail, in every century, turned against us.

Menachem Mendel Schneerson: Becoming the Messiah
The Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one of the world’s best-known Hasidic groups, is driven by the belief that we are on the verge of the messianic age. One man is most recognized for the movement’s success: the seventh and last Lubavitcher rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994), believed by many of his followers to be the Messiah. How did he go from being an ordinary rabbi’s son in the Russian Empire to a mystical sage who revitalized a centuries-old Hasidic movement, constructed an outreach empire of unprecedented scope, and earned the admiration and condemnation of political, communal, and religious leaders in America and abroad? Explore the life and thoughts of one of the most influential—and controversial—rabbis in modern Judaism.
