inenu – We Are Here . . . here tonight, as a community, to celebrate Park Avenue Synagogue as well as to celebrate our most deserving honorees, Rebbeca Raphael and Eric Feuerstein. On this evening of our 20th Annual Gala, we have once again shown up for each other – the synagogue for its congregants, our members for the synagogue, and all of us for each other. Park Avenue Synagogue has been a home for prayer, learning, and community for its members for more than 143 years, and we have never been stronger. Our physical campus is occupied day and night – with services, classrooms, travel, and other gatherings all at capacity attendance. And we show up for each other – to celebrate happy events, to provide comfort at less happy times, and sometimes by just providing a warm smile or “Shabbat Shalom” greeting from a familiar face, one that often becomes a new friend. What makes this community so strong is the tireless work and compassion of our clergy and staff, combined with the efforts of so many of our community lay leaders and members, all showing up in support of Park Avenue Synagogue.

So, who better to exemplify this theme of “showing up” than our honorees, who have made showing up for Park Avenue Synagogue a family sport. Eric and Rebecca have instilled in Jacob, Lily Rae, and Benjamin the same love for our community that they possess. This magical party of five can most often be seen sitting in the front row at Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday nights, singing loudly, and caring deeply. Whether it’s chanting Torah during the High Holidays, raising awareness and funds for the most significant Park Avenue Synagogue initiatives, or simply bringing groups of people together to celebrate in times both good and bad, Eric and Rebecca live their lives with the true meaning of Hinenu. They have touched our community in visible ways, but also in ways you cannot see, and have inspired so many to join and show up for Park Avenue Synagogue with the same energy, commitment, passion, and love. For all of this and more, thank you Rebecca and Eric! We are lucky to have you, Jacob, Lily Rae, and Benjamin as part of our Park Avenue Synagogue family.
