Much attention is focused today on pathogenic microorganisms that have developed resistance to antibiotic treatment, or entire types or classes of antibiotics. The loss of effective antibiotic treatment undermines the ability of healthcare professionals to fight infectious diseases and manage their complications among immunocompromised patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than two million people in the United States are sickened every year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 75,000 dying (2013) as a result. Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) kill more people in this country than AIDS,
