Fabrizio Furiassi (*1983) is an architectural and urban designer graduated at Sapienza University of Rome, and currently a research fellow at Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow.

He also studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute.

FOUNDING

As a professional he worked in Italy and Canada in reputable offices like IaN+ and The Commons Inc.

He also tutored at the workshop Atelier Reflexion Urbaine, a joint effort by the Sapienza University and the University of Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée.

His work awarded him the 1st prize at the Roma Design Lab, a nomination at the Archiprix International / MIT, and special mentions at the competitions CityVision NY and The Europe’s Become.

He has been an outpost member of OfficeUS, a global architectural practice in charge of the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale curated by Rem Koolhaas. At Strelka he is studying Hybrid Urbanism, a research program at the intersection between physical and digital world.

ANNI 10 : IL BOOM DEGLI EVENTI E DEGLI STIMOLI

Breve invito a non farsi trascinare dalla macchina del tempo Non è la felicità che bisogna cercare. Più la si cerca, più fugge. Bisogna cercare l’arte di vivere, che dà in regalo grandi e piccole felicità.

E. Morin1 In piena età della tecnica e sempre più spesso negli ultimi anni, si sta diffondendo la tendenza e l’illusione di poter risolvere un determinato problema della nostra vita o la spiegazione di un fenomeno affidandoci sempre e solo al calcolo numerico.

Influenzati dalla letteratura mediatica pensiamo a volte che anche i fenomeni più complessi siano quantificabili e riducibili a dati elementari. Finiamo col convincerci inoltre che ogni cosa si possa prevedere, prevenire, curare con i medesimi stratagemmi della tecnica.

A questo si aggiunge il fatto che siamo affiancati da cervelli elettronici che spesso abbiamo interposto tra di noi e il mondo, dando quindi in gestione una parte delle nostre percezioni.

Pensiamo in maniera banale alle previsioni meteo. Abbiamo necessità di sapere che tempo farà tra due ore o adesso che stiamo parlando, senza però magari curarci di alzare il naso per controllare di persona. Che dire quindi del fatto che scarichiamo in continuazione app sul nostro cellulare per assicurarci di avere il controllo su tutto, per mettere a sistema ogni cosa (appunto): dalle ultime agenzie stampa alla nostra frequenza cardiaca? Tutto ciò (lontano dal negarne alcuni risultati comunque positivi) può avere effetti dannosi sul nostro stato di salute e non mi riferisco tanto alle onde elettromagnetiche quanto al fatto che, come

dicevo prima, finiamo per non usare al meglio le nostre capacità percettive.

Mi spiego con altri esempi: ogni volta che demandiamo al controllo della macchina, di un orecchio elettronico per esempio il riconoscimento di un brano musicale, ci affidiamo più o meno inconsapevoli ad una memoria virtuale, fuori di noi. Di conseguenza, per controllare tutta una serie di informazioni, le salviamo sul nostro tablet sotto forma di documenti, magari ordinatissimi in rigorosi archivi…ma in qualche modo queste informazioni, spesso importanti per il nostro lavoro o per altro, ci sfuggono dalla memoria, la nostra, pensando che comunque saranno sempre dentro l’hard disk. In pratica dimentichiamo di possederle o le possediamo dimenticandole. Dove voglio arrivare?

Così facendo scommettiamo sempre meno sulle nostre capacità mentali e sensoriali in generale e tendiamo ad avere necessità di strumenti scientifici che debilitano lentamente

la fiducia nelle nostre stesse capacità personali.

Ad ogni modo siamo in piena era del boom dell’informazione e diventa obbligatorio, per gestire bene le nostre risorse e anche per sopravvivere, imparare ad informarsi. Un po’ come apprendere un mestiere mentre lo si svolge.

In un sistema delicato e ingarbugliato come quello globale, c’è da dirlo, il discorso è generale ed il senso comune, i sentimenti, gli stati d’animo sono per forza di cose manipolati da tanza strategica che gioca la tecnologia e una giusta informazione per la nostra formazione culturale. Nelle nostre sfide creative, perché è di questo che parliamo, sono necessarie entrambe.

Inoltre, dati statistici settimanali di benessere/ malessere, il Pil, la borsa, le notizie delle varie testate o pagine web non bastano o non sono adatte a mio avviso a capire la direzione da seguire e creano sovente psicosi collettive e uno stato di perenne agitazione.

Si alimenta la paura di rimanere fuori dal controllo anche del proprio mondo domestico, spesso si teme per la propria incolumità e si rischia di perdere il controllo.

Con queste premesse, un po’ austere ma necessarie per delineare il contesto in cui viviamo volenti o nolenti, non si vuole negare l’impor-

Dopo provare a cercare la giusta via da seguire o il “come si fa” per intraprendere un percorso senza illudersi di trovare delle risposte tanto facili quanto devianti. Questo ci interessa.

In questo numero intervistiamo giovani che costruiscono il loro mestiere giorno per giorno, seguendo spesso il loro istinto creativo. Essi non fuggono dalle difficoltà e così facendo vivono delle loro passioni, realizzando un po’ alla volta delle storie di successo. I loro racconti lanciano nel complesso un messaggio positivo e stimolante in cui il filo conduttore sembra essere condensato in una parola sola: Qualità!

Se siete stanchi degli ultimi otto anni di crisi ma ancora abbastanza curiosi, giovani nel cuore e vogliosi di chiudere la bocca a quanti vorrebbero solo urlare e spargere negatività, questo numero di PDA è per voi!

E. Morin In the heart of the age of technology and more and more often in recent years, there is a growing trend and the illusion of being able to solve a particular problem of our life or the explanation of a phenomenon always trusting only in numerical calculation.

Influenced by media, sometimes we think that even the most complicated phenomena are quantifiable and can be reduced to basic data.

We further convince ourselves that we can predict, prevent, treat everything with the same tricks of the technique.

Everything (far from denying some positive results anyway) can be dangerous for our health, not referring to electromagnetic waves, but to our sanity, as I said before, because we end up not using the most of our perceptual capacities.

Let me explain with other examples: whenever you delegate to the machine control, such us an electronic ear, the recognition of a music track, we trust more or less unaware to an external virtual memory. Consequently, to

control a series of data, we store them on our tablet as documents, perhaps highly ordered... but somehow these data, often important for our work or for anything else, escape from our own memory, thinking that however they will always be inside the hard drive. Basically we forget to own them or we own them forgetting them. Where I’m going?

By doing so we bet less and less on our sensorial and mental capacities in general and tend to need scientific instruments which slowly weaken confidence in our own personal abilities.

However we are in the era of the information boom and it gets mandatory to better manage our resources and also to survive, learning to be in step with the times. Like learning a trade while you conduct it.

In a delicate and tangled system like the global one, we need to say, the situation is general and common sense, feelings, moods are inevitably manipulated by a number of constant influences: emails, notifications, agencies, chronicles, various alerts, attacks... in addition, wellness/malaise statistical weekly data,

the GDP, the Stock Market, the news are not enough or not appropriate in my point of view to understand the direction to take and create often collective psychosis and a state of constant agitation.

All this feeds the fear of being out of control even of your home world, often being afraid of your safety and risking to lose control.

With these premises, a little bit austere but necessary to outline the context in which we willy-nilly live, we don’t want to deny the strategic importance of technology and the right information for our education. In our creative challenges, because this is what we talk about, we need both.

But first we must know how these complex instruments (including the information) can be used. Then we can try to find the right way to take or the “know how” to start a path with no illusions in demanding to find easy or deviant answers. This is what concerns us.

In this issue we interview young men who build their trade every day, often following their creative instinct. They do not run away from problems and in this way they live on their passions, creating step by step success stories.

Their stories give in general a positive and inspiring message in which the central thread seems to be condensed into one word: Quality!

If you are tired of the last eight years of crisis but still quite curious, young in your heart and eager to silence those who would just scream and spread negativity, this issue of PDA is for you!

CERCANDO LA BELLEZZA! Innanzitutto presentati, raccontaci in breve chi sei e di che ti occupi.

Sono uno che da piccolo ha incominciato ad amare le cose antiche, le storie di famiglia, e che ha così sviluppato una particolare sensibilità per tutto ciò che ha un sapore antico e che rimanda a storie e desideri legati ad uomini che sono passati. Mi piace leggere tracce e paratesti: le cose che altri hanno lasciato e che a me sembrano infinitamente interessanti.

Questo è quanto percepisco e ricostruisco io stesso di me.

Nel mio curriculum è scritto che mi sono laureato in Conservazione dei Beni Culturali all’Università di Bologna, dove poi ho vinto un dottorato con borsa. Pian piano ho cominciato ad amare Ravenna e la sua biblioteca, la Classense, una delle biblioteche più importanti e belle d’Italia. Così ho scavalcato il banco del bibliotecario e adesso lavoro all’Ufficio Manoscritti e Rari e, sempre per il Comune, al Servizio Turismo e Attività Culturali: una doppia appartenenza che mi rende felice e mi arricchisce.

Sono modicano ma con sangue istriano: una mistura i cui risvolti non ho ancora dipanato. Forse a Ravenna sento spirare l’aria di Parenzo (città d’origine di mia nonna), che è una città della koiné altoadriatica del mosaico bizantino tardoantico.

Di recente, insieme a Stefano e Claudio Berti, Roberta Grasso e Jona Sbarzaglia hai sviluppato un’applicazione digitale per il turismo (GETCOO) e fondato una Start up. QUANDO E IN CHE MODO è nata l’idea e si e formato questo gruppo di lavoro? Spiegaci anche come funziona una Start up.

L’idea è di Stefano, che ha cominciato a

lavorarci con Jona Sbarzaglia (il creatore dell’identità grafica) e suo fratello Claudio. Ad un certo punto siamo entrati io e Roberta, che abbiamo portato dentro al progetto la nostra impronta umanistica e una specifica competenza sui Beni Culturali. Di solito funziona così: si lavora contemporaneamente sull’idea e sulla partecipazione a bandi per finanziamenti, concorsi o ingressi in incubatori ed acceleratori.

Questi due tipi di struttura sono delle organizzazioni private che investono su idee ritenute valide e aiutano a perfezionarle, aggiungendo competenze e scremando gli errori più grossolani. In certi casi possono condurre perfino al mercato e alla remunerazione, che in una startup non è detto arrivi subito...

Nel contesto dell’attualità, notiamo come tutto ciò che non sembra immediatamente riconducibile ad uno scopo e ad un risultato remunerativo in termini materiali venga considerato inutile. Ma è veramente così? Ad esempio, che ruolo giocano l’Arte e la Bellezza? Si può ancora dire che l’una presuppone l’altra, come accadeva prima del Novecento o ormai questo binomio è stato annullato? Non è forse vero che l’inutile, l’arte e il fine ultimo della bellezza sono, per parafrasare Oscar Wilde, ciò che conta davvero per l’umanità?

La cosa che mi scoraggia di più è che nella coscienza comune si è insinuato questo germe malefico dell’utilitarismo ad effetto immediato, che considera trascurabile lo studio di certe discipline considerate improduttive, un lusso e un’inutile spesa per la collettività. Tutto ciò è semplicemente assurdo. Io vedo frequentemente che chi non si è dedicato almeno un po’ a mate-

biamo necessità oggi? Di cosa ha necessità ad esempio un giovane dai 25 ai 40 anni?

rie considerate “improduttive” è semplicemente meno attrezzato a capire e produrre bellezza, a comprendere la realtà in modo non epidermico; sa stare meno bene al mondo e rischia di renderlo più brutto, meno funzionale, meno morale... La bellezza ha a che fare con la morale, col rispetto, con l’armonia. Fare solo ciò che è utile subito è prima di tutto illusorio: ciò che si fa subito probabilmente non è neanche più utile ora di altre cose concepite senza l’ansia di far presto. Spesso è solo più volatile ed effimero.

Con riguardo ad un’idea imprenditoriale, si può dire che avere conoscenze e valori di tipo umanistico può costituire quel quid

Ma in fondo la vita è lotta e noi siamo più fortunati dei nostri nonni. Loro alla nostra età avevano fatto una guerra e vissuto orrori indicibili; in più, spesso avevano visto naufragare irrimediabilmente i loro sogni, perseguire i quali costava più fatica che oggi. Noi, al confronto, siamo solo petulanti e lamentosi. L’umiltà consente di porsi in posizione di ascolto e ciò consente di vedere in modo più globale... Io amo e ho sempre amato l’autonomia, il distacco dalla famiglia per “fondarsi”...

Che ruolo giocano i Media in tutto ciò? E Come si può imparare ad usare la tecnologia per implementare la conoscenza, dall’informazione su quello che ci succede intorno alla complessità dei fenomeni? In fondo la tecnologia è solo un enorme incubatore, riflesso o amplificatore di quello che succede la fuori…

Teniamo presente che una volta (diciamo genericamente nel cosiddetto “Medioevo”) si era sapienti se si erano letti 100, 200 libri. Adesso diremmo solo 100, 200 libri. Ma sapienti davvero. Al giorno d’oggi anche i più illetterati hanno letto un numero maggiore di libri e l’accesso alle informazioni si è aperto come mai prima: questo forse, segna quanto di rivoluzionario caratterizza la nostra epoca. L’epoca dell’accesso all’informazione.

Tuttavia, abbiamo prodotto disastri come Barbara D’Urso o Studio Aperto. Perdona la banalità. E i media sono tutto. Se ne segui tanti, hai qualche possibilità di comprendere qualcosa, di intuire le dinamiche della comunicazione; se ascolti sempre quel che ti piace, conforta o “nutre” (secondo te), sei bell’e spacciato. Incasellato. L’ampiezza del ventaglio di scelte che abbiamo davanti può scoraggiare molti,

me compreso. Ma alla fine, sinceramente, non vorrei vivere che in questa nostra epoca, e vedere quanto più mi è possibile, di questo spettacolo.

LOOKING FOR THE BEAUTY First of all introduce yourself : tell us briefly who you are and what you take care of.

Since I was a child I’ve been started to love the old things, family stories, so I developed a special sensitivity for everything tastes old and which refers to stories and desires related to people of the past. I like to read tracks and texts : things left by the others which I consider infinitely interesting.

This is what I perceive and rebuild of myself.

My resume is written that I graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Bologna , where I won a PhD scholarship.

Slowly I began to love Ravenna and its library , the Classense , one of the most important libraries and beautiful in Italy . So I got a librarian and now I work at Ufficio Manoscritti e Rari (Manuscripts and Rare Subjects Office) for the Municipality, as well as at the Tourism and Culture Service: a double belonging that makes me happy and enriches me.

Recently, together with Stefano and Claudio Berti, Roberta Grasso and Jona Sbarzaglia you developed a digital app for tourism (GETCOO) and founded a Start up. When and how was the idea and and this working group born? Please explain us also how a Start up works.

This is a Stefano’s idea, who began working with Jona Sbarzaglia (the graphic identity creator)

In the context of current events, we see that everything which seems with no practical purpose and no profit goals is generally considered unnecessary. But does it really work like that?

For example, what’s the role of Art and Beauty? Can you still say that the one presupposes the other, as it used to be before the twentieth century or has this combination been now cancelled? Isn’t true maybe that the useless, art and the ultimate aim of beauty are, as Oscar Wilde says, what really matters for humanity?

in all this? And how to learn to use technology to implement the knowledge, from information on what is happening around us to the complexity of phenomena?

After all, technology is just a huge incubator, reflection or amplifier of what is happening out there...

Let’s bear in mind that in the past (we can generically say in the so-called “Middle Age”) you were educated if you had read 100, 200 books. Today we would say only 100, 200 books. But really educated. Nowadays even the most illiterate read a greater number of books and the access to information is open as never before: this perhaps, marks the revolutionary character of our age. The age of information access.

However, we produced bad quality television products like Barbara D’Urso or Studio Aperto. Forgive the banality. And the media are all. If you follow a lot of them, you have chances to understand something, to foresee the dynamics of communication; if you listen to only what you want to listen, it comforts or “feeds” yourself (according to you), you’re a goner.

Pigeonholed. The range of choices we face may discourage many people, including myself. But in the end, frankly, I really want to live in my time and enjoy this show as much as I can.

CC Esatto, anche perché in quel periodo si unì al gruppo Cristian e decidemmo di spingerci in quell’ambito. Fino ad allora ci eravamo cimentati per lo più con oggetti sperimentali a metà strada tra l’installazione performativa e la microarchitettura. Tra il 2007 e il 2008 abbiamo preso parte al MACEF Design Award, vincendo il primo premio con DININK, penne biro con dei cappucci particolari che le trasformano in posate. Avevamo voluto ironizzare sul lavoro frenetico che spesso costringe a mangiare mentre lavori, ma l’idea ha anche un reale risvolto ecologico in quanto riduce il consumo di plastica mettendo insieme due oggetti. La cosa incredibile è stata ritrovare, nei giorni successivi alla premiazione, il nostro nome e il progetto sui quotidiani nazionali. Dato che ab-

problema tecnico (e molta sfortuna!) non eravamo riusciti a inviare il materiale. Il progetto, WheelLY, è un rifugio per senzatetto richiudibile su se stesso e portatile.

Ottenne molto successo mediatico e ci arrivò una proposta, da parte di un’azienda di Terni, per la realizzazione di un prototipo e la presentazione. Fu così apprezzato che fummo invitati a partecipare a un premio internazionale: il Well tech award.

CC Un’altra grande prospettiva ci è stata offerta dal progetto Glocal handmade, un workshop organizzato grazie alla Camera di Commercio di Frosinone dove giovani designer under 35, italiani e non solo, collaboravano, con la nostra direzione artistica, con diversi esperti artigiani provenienti da piccole imprese. L’obiettivo era avere oggetti realizzati in piccole realtà ma che potessero presentarsi sulla scena internazionale.

SDG E le aziende italiane?

FF Dopo il Well tech finalmente abbiamo avuto dei contatti concreti. In particolare, ricordo Bialetti e Ottagono; abbiamo realizzato anche degli allestimenti, tra cui degli stand per Di Donato e la cantina Zaccagnini. Eravamo stimolati a tenere un alto profilo. Avevo realizzato per intero una mostra personale di fotografia, curando anche la grafica e la divulgazione. Si era creato del passaparola e arrivarono delle richieste per degli allestimenti, quindi decisi di lasciare lo studio di architettura dove lavoravo e dedicarmi ai miei progetti, mettendomi in gioco in prima persona.

SDG Voi siete giunti a Roma da altre città. Raccontateci di qualcosa che vi è successo e che poteva succedere solo a Roma.

FF Quando abbiamo portato WheelLY all’ospedale San Gallicano per presentarlo ai senzatetto. Si è trattato di un’esperienza indimenticabile, perché abbiamo capito meglio cosa significa vivere in strada e come potevamo aiutare davvero queste persone con il nostro progetto.

SDG Date un suggerimento per un giovane universitario di oggi, un piccolo investimento che però può diventare importante nel tempo.

PEB Non è importante avere sempre il voto massimo né laurearsi in breve tempo. È invece importante lavorare e fare dei concorsi. Significa mettersi in gioco, in prima persona, imbastire un gruppo di lavoro.

AC L’apprendistato in uno studio penso sia importante. Non solo si impara il mestiere, finalmente conosci meglio te stesso; ci si ritaglia un ruolo all’interno del gruppo.

SDG Quello che è successo con Zo_loft, oggi, a (soli) dieci anni di differenza, accadrebbe allo stesso modo?

PEB Penso di no. Le occasioni che hanno i giovani oggi sono differenti. Per esempio, per noi internet è stato importantissimo e oggi lo si usa in modo differente.

Un’idea in questi anni ottiene una visibilità limitata a poche settimane, mentre quando abbiamo cominciato noi a usare il web per diffondere i nostri progetti, questi rimanevano ben visibili anche per un anno intero. Anche con le aziende e i media la comunicazione è cambiata, rispetto a pochi anni fa: non c’è più grande possibilità di un riscontro o anche di un contatto diretto, a meno che tu non sia già una persona conosciuta. Non basta creare prodotti di qualità.

CC I concorsi migliori sono quelli internazionali, dove la giuria è composta da professionisti che voi stimate.

PEB Un’idea nuova, differente, innovativa, perché le idee nuove, magari molto rischiose, spesso vengono dai giovani. I giovani si mettono in gioco più facilmente ed escono spesso dagli schemi.

D’altro canto i giovani devono stare attenti a curare la storia del loro mestiere, per non avviarsi inconsapevolmente su strade già battute.

SDG Cosa ha invece in meno un’impresa giovane rispetto ad una storica, una cosiddetta “vecchia gloria” per intenderci? Avete accennato a degli svantaggi per i giovani, che intendevate?

AC L’impresa storica arrivava al successo con lentezza e consapevolezza, e questo le conferiva una personalità precisa e quindi la capacità di essere davvero innovativa. Molti giovani confondono l’essere progettista con il fare autoproduzione, cioè essere imprenditore di se stessi. Non basta fare una sedia di cartone con una stampante 3D o avere un sito di e-commerce per essere designer o imprenditori, queste figure devono possedere delle competenze complesse.

this name?

PEB ZO_loft had already premises in the university, because I, Andrea and Francesca knew each other in that period. In 2007 we were a group already popular and we were invited to participate at an exhibition, in Pescara, on architects under 35. We presented ourselves as “ZO_loft architecture and design� for the first time, and participated with an idea of renovation of a 30 mq area in the historic center by proposing the retraining with microarchitectures which were to maintain the project flexible. It was about four mobile containers with different functions.

SDG Was it after this event when you started to work in the field of industrial design?

CC Exactly, also because in that period Cristian joined our group and we decided to follow that field.

Since then we became experimented with many experimental objects which were classified between performative installation and microarchitecture. Between 2007 and 2008 we participated at MACEF Design Award and won the first award with DIN-INK, ballpoint pens with special hoods that turn them into cutlery. We wanted to ironize the frantic work which often constrains us to eat while working, but the idea has also a real ecological lapel because it reduces the consume of plastic by putting together two objects.

What was mostly incredible, in the following days of the reward, was seeing our names and project in all

the national newspapers. Since we had this positive result, we decided to found a S.R.L which would deal with services in the design, architecture and preparation field.

SDG In what field did you begin, and with whom you collaborated with?

AC We started in Pescara by finding good relations with the foreign reality. Initially, we tried with Italian agencies, but unlike of the American ones, for instance, we did not receive any concrete proposals. Primarly, thanks also to DIN-INK fame, in that moment we were working on small fooddesign objects.

PEB At the same time we also succeeded to propose again a project

of the 2005 competition, which remained pending because of a technical problem, and of great bad luck, we did not succeed to send the material. WheelLY project is a refuge for the homeless resealable on itself and portable. It obtained a great media success. We also received a proposal, from a Terni’s agency, to realize a prototype and presentation. It was so appreciated that we were invited to partecipate at an international award: Well Tech Award.

CC Another great perspective was offered by the project Glocal handmade, a workshop organized thanks to the Chamber of Commerce of Frosinone where young designers under 35, Italian and non, collaborated with our artistic director, with several expert craftsmen from small companies.

The goal was to have items made in small realities but which actually could present themselves on the international stage.

SDG Give a tip to a young university student nowadays, a

PEB It is not important to always have the maximum grade or to graduate soon. Instead, it is important to work and do the competitions. It means a great challenge, first person perspective, strike up a working group.

CC The best competitions are the international ones, where the jury consists of professionals that you appreciate.

FF Especially if the reward is the realization! Even if it is a small object. It becomes aware of your skills, you learn to compare yourself with people who think differently, with a jury that has to express an opinion after seeing briefly your project: it means knowing how to communicate through images and texts from an immediate comprehension. Another positive element is having to respect (hard) times and rules.

AC I think that apprenticeship in a study is important. Not only you learn the craft, but you finally know yourself better; it offers us a role within the group.

SDG What happened with Zo_ loft, today, at (only) ten years of difference, would it happen the same way?

PEB I do not think so. The opportunities that young people have today are different. For example, for us the Internet was important, and today it is used in a different way.

It is an idea which in recent years

achieved a limited visibility in few weeks. While we were getting started to use the web to spread our projects, these also remained visible for a whole year. Even with the companies and the media communication it has changed, compared to a few years ago: there is no great chance anymore of an answer or even direct contact, unless you are already a known person. It is just not enough to create quality products.

AC Also the visibility that you can obtain on the web, in particular with social networks, sometimes leads you into erroneous considerations, because hardly who comes into contact with your work deepens over a first glimpse, even though it might still give a positive response .

SDG Do you think that in your personal history was more important: luck, dedication, desire to emerge, or even investment in its preparation? Regardless of how you were trained at the university.

PEB I think I speak for everyone when I say that instrumental preparation and perseverance are fundamental; nothing is given, promotion is needed, looking for new ways, without stopping.

Che cosa ti hanno dato le due università italiane?

rio e la passione di diventare architetto, l’amore per il sapere dell’architettura. Roma 3 ha contribuito a darmi una visione realistica e razionale, orientata all’esercizio concreto della professione.

Fino a qui tutto bene. Le premesse ci sono tutte. Poi, la svolta. Quando hai capito che “non” volevi fare l’architetto in senso stretto?

Una volta capito quale sarebbe stato il tuo campo di interesse specifico all’interno del vasto universo dell’architettura, e cioè quello della comunicazione e del marketing per così dire, veniamo alla scelta fatidica...dove e come.

Una volta laureata hai deciso di andare all’estero, a Rotterdam. Ci racconti come è andata quell’esperienza?

studio. Direi piuttosto quella di un gruppo unito, che ha visto crescere il numero dei collaboratori da 30 a 50 nel giro di poco tempo. Si condivideva il lavoro e anche la birra del dopolavoro.

La compnente italiana era ben rappresentata. Addirittura uno dei project leader era italiano, classe ‘83. Il clima generale era quello di fiducia nelle tue capacità. Se vali e sei volenteroso vai avanti.

Sembrerebbe una situazione ideale da consolidare, con ampie prospettive per il futuro. Ma poi, la scelta di rientrare in Italia. E qua inizia la seconda vita di Maria Azzurra. Raccontaci un po’ questa storia.

Si. Tutto è inziato un po’ per gioco e un po’ per sfida nel 2013. In breve di che cosa vi occupate e che servizi pensate di offrire?

Esatto. Lo spirito che anima il nostro lavoro è quello eclettico.

Interesse e curiosità a 360° verso il mondo del design in tutte le sue forme e declinazioni, dall’arte, architettura, agli eventi, alla performance...

Qual’è il tuo personale punto di vista sulla situazione dell’architettura in Italia? Pensi che questo momento di crisi generale possa portare alla ridefinizione di un nuovo ruolo sociale, culturale e professionale dell’architetto?

Si, credo che ogni periodo di cambiamento che riguarda la società, l’economia in generale come quello che stiamo vivendo oggi stia già portando alla nascita di una nuova figura di architetto, in cui l’architettura è solo una delle tante forme di espressione che gli viene richiesta, non l’unica.

The first word I noticed looking at your website is “hotchpotch” which means a big pot with a caotic mass of things inside. Which the ideas cooking in the pot of mint List? In other words, what are you dealing of and what kind of services do you offer?

Right. The spirit inspiring our work is ecleptic. A total curiosity towards the world of design in each forms and branches. From art to architecture, from event to performance...

I saw mint List was press manager of the 2015 “New Generations” festival in Genova. An event which tries to outline the new figure of the architect today, in relation to the new needs of market and society, the other professionals and actors, always looking at the model of sustainable development.

What’s your personal point of view about architecture in Italy today? Do you think this moment of crisis can reshape a new role, cultural, social and professional for the architect?

I think all this initiatives are positive because they allow to take a challenge at a personal level. In this sense maybe university makes us to dream too much. Who among the graduated architects can ever think about building a museum?

And now we come back to the starting point. University and training. Are you meaning learning programs should have a more realism?

Yes, I believe students should also learn skills that can be spent in the real world of profession, an updated knowledge in order to answer to the needs of the present moment we are living. Also material matters, such as found rising, strictly connected with the feasibility of the creative work of the architect should be taught.

To close this interview. Your advice for a young student of architecture.

alla batteria. L’amore per il pianoforte è sbocciato dopo i vent’anni e da autodidatta e minimalista ho iniziato a scrivere dei brani.

Nell’attuale formazione dal vivo abbiamo cercato di darci un’identità sonora, che si distaccasse un po’ dal disco, ma che avesse comunque un impatto piuttosto forte. Per come la vedo io le due cose possono coesistere. Le conti sul palmo di una mano le band che hanno inventato da zero un nuovo genere musicale. Quindi nella composizione si lancia sempre uno sguardo al passato, che siano i 70 o gli 80 o chissà cos’altro. Credo l’importante sia mettere del proprio, lasciare un’impronta il più personale possibile.

Le epoche musicali, specie quella attuale influenzano la tua musica? Se si, in che modo?

Sarei bugiardo a dire che la musica contemporanea non mi influenzi. Al momento ho anch’io una cotta per gli anni ottanta, mentre in passato ho avuto delle fisse per la commerciale dei novanta. Mi piace studiare suoni e ritmiche per poi riformularli con VeiveCura.

Come suonerà il nuovo album?

Non lo so ancora, in questi giorni ho finalmente trovato il tempo per organizzare alcune idee che ho messo da parte negli ultimi due anni. Rispetto al passato vorrei dare un suono più definito, oserei dire “elettronico”. In primavera tutto ciò su cui sto lavorando probabilmente inizierà ad avere un’identità precisa.

Ricordo che, alla fine di ogni tournee ritorni sempre nella tua Sicilia: cosa ti attrae di questa terra?

La Sicilia è una delle principali fonti d’ispirazione. Vivo bene nella mia Modica, mi piace la dimensione di paese, lontano dal caos. La sera posso anche uscire da solo, so già che qualcuno con cui parlare e bere un bicchiere lo troverò sempre. Mi pesano solo le difficol-

Brief look into the world of VeiveCura: interview to front man Davide Iacono who will tell us about his music and his concerts, offering a vision of new music in general and his new album.

Often you are on tour with your band running across Italy and in recent years you have been abro-

The band is consolidating and you are reaching significant professional and personal results. Could you tell us about your experience on the road? What do you most remember about these trips?

I traveled a lot recently thanks to the music, I also lived abroad for a couple of years. The trip changed me, on one hand it made me mature from a human and professional perspective, on the other it kept me a child and a dreamer. I always managed to get by around Europe, I’ve learned on the road the basic English you need, I slept in a sleeping bag and ultra-luxury hotel, no matter when you have a fixed

goal in your head. The only regret is not having had time to visit all the cities I’ve been to: when you are on tour you almost never have time for sightseeing.

During your concerts Salvo Scucces, Salvo Puma and you, in addition to your main instrument you play just about anything and often exchange roles each other. Reminding, you started as a drummer, in the first albums of VeiveCura instead you mainly played the piano and now you are getting, as they say, multitasking and play at the same time the piano, the drums and some effects... How and why has your style of playing changed in recent years?

I am a multiinstrumentalist by chance. When I was little I studied the piano at school, but that did not thrill me so much. Then as a teenager I passionately devoted to the battery. The love for the piano has blossomed in my early twenties and I started as a self-taught and minimalist writing songs. In our current live line up we tried to give us an identity sound which is detached a little bit from the studio album, but still with a strong impact.

We are three of us, mainly for logistical reasons, so

the only solution was for everyone to play more instruments (even simultaneously), and so it was.

Fortunately, modern technology helps a lot. If you think about it, in the album there are songs with thirteen musicians, and live just Scucces, Puma and me.

So, comparing when there was no Internet, do you think it’s harder or easier to promote an album?

This is apparently a simple question, but actually it is not at all.

The Internet is a tool that in theory gives you the opportunity to be immediately visible to others, on the other hand it is also true that 99.9% of the music on the web passes by unnoticed simply because supply exceeds demand. It can also happen that someone publishes a wonderful record and that no one notices it, or conversely that a bad artist maybe ‘cause of an absurd alchemy becomes famous.

I think the important thing is to put it’own, leave an imprint as personal as possible.

Do the musical eras, especially the current one, influence your music? If yes, how?

I would be lying to say that contemporary music does not affect me. I particularly currently appreciate 80’s, whereas in the past I admired 90’s disco music. I like to study the sounds and the rhythms to be reformulated with VeiveCura.

What about your next album?

I don’t know yet, these days I finally found the time to organize some ideas that I put aside in the past two years. Comparing to the past would give a more defined sound, I’d say “electronic”. The next spring everything I’m working on probably it will start to have a clear identity.

All young people often feel lost, without a defined model of life, we might even say without a model of individual growth. There is much, really too much confusion, in all fields and at all levels of society. Does your music help you overcome these challenges?

I live the troubles just like the rest

of my friends. Job insecurity, insecurity of personal relationships... those of my generation are quite out of luck. Grown up with the model of our fathers and mothers with a steady job and a successful relationship, we, in our thirties, have anything of this, except a lucky few of us. Music helps because it numbs many wounds or at least it ennobles them, in other cases it exacerbates the feeling of decaden-

ce, of being out of touch, this is all subjective.

A tip to give to the younger and to the older people.

To the younger people I suggest to grow up quickly, to the older ones I suggest not to grow any more.

La foto appartiene ad una serie, Imago Urbis.

Difficile confrontarsi fotograficamente con una città come Roma, si rischia di cadere nel risonante, enfatico e sostanzialmente vuoto. Ho scelto quindi di descrivere questa città cercando luoghi insoliti non immediatamente riconducibili “all’iconografia” della città.

In ogni scatto della serie provo ad individuare uno specifico anello di un più generale bisogno di descrivere l’Urbe attraverso un leitmotiv basato , senza dubbio, sulla dicotomia, la contraddizione.

In questa foto, tento di raffigurare lo stridente contrasto, che a mio avviso nelle città appare più evidente, tra artificiale (umano) e naturale. L’artificiale è rappresentato formalmente dal geometrico, ovvero ciò che l’uomo progetta e costruisce. La natura d’altro canto raramente si manifesta racchiusa in forme geometriche perfette: Il naturale è l’albero, unica figura non geometrica stretta nella morsa del continuo ricorrere di triangoli e rettangoli.

It is quite difficult to speak about Rome by photography.

The risk is to fall in stereotype, an emphatic, and essentially empty image.

So I chose to describe this city looking for unusual places, not directly connected to the city’s imaginary.

In each shot of the series I try to find a specific hinge of the general need to approach and describe the Urbe through a leitmotiv based on dichotomy and contradiction.

In this picture, I want to represent the harsh contrast between natural and artificial, which is much more evident inside the city.

The artificial is the geometric part, that is what man designs and builds. On the other side nature can be rarely framed in perfect geometric shapes.

Here nature is the tree, the only non-geometric figure in the picture, compelled in the grip of the obsessive presence of triangles and rectangles.

E The Shadow Line: A Confession è un romanzo autobiografico di Joseph Conrad (Lord Jim, Nostromo, Cuore di tenebra) scritto nel 1915 e pubblicato nel 1916.

Un anonimo narratore lascia il suo lavoro da primo ufficiale, carico di un’energia giovanile che non trova soddisfazione. Mentre già medita il ritorno in patria da Bangkok, ottiene quasi casualmente il suo primo comando. L’incarico sarà molto arduo.

Durante il viaggio l’intero equipaggio è vittima di una febbre che riduce i marinai a fantasmi di se stessi, anche per colpa del misterioso furto delle medicine. La situazione precipita a causa di un periodo di vento assente che congela tutto in un incubo dove nulla sembra seguire un senso compiuto. In particolare, per il narratore sono ossessive le farneticazioni del febbricitante primo ufficiale Burns, sicuro che lo spirito del precedente capitano, morto malato e ormai privo della ragione proprio su quella nave, ora la perseguiti.

Il comandante compirà il proprio dovere fino in fondo, non cedendo mai (definitivamente) alla fatica e alla follia.

Il racconto rievoca La ballata del vecchio marinaio di Coleridge, e tra gli altri La Tempesta e l’Amleto più volte citati direttamente.

L’autore inserisce una nota conclusiva per spiegare che non mira (soltanto) all’esposizione d’inquietanti eventi causati da circostanze che sembrano soprannaturali - non rinuncia per esempio a riferire, nel romanzo, di una risata “da far rizzare i capelli” dell’ufficiale Burns, un esorcismo dopo il quale ogni cosa tornerà lentamente alla normalità.

Conrad scrive questo testo durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Il libro è dedicato al figlio Borys, soldato in trincea, e ai suoi giovani compagni.

Per tutti loro, la giovinezza sarà un dono che non potranno godere pienamente.

Varcare la linea d’ombra non significa entrare in un luogo ultraterreno. Il romanzo non è un manuale su come varcare quella linea: questo avviene “da sé” e “senza che ce ne accorgiamo”.

Conrad sapeva di non poter far nulla per salvare il figlio: scrive la storia di un capitano senza nome su una nave senza nome. Aggrapparsi alla ragione, al senso del dovere, alla speranza, al cameratismo, è il solo modo di poter, almeno, sperare di sopravvivere ai pericoli che siamo chiamati ad affrontare.

The Shadow Line: A Confession is an autobiographical novel by Joseph Conrad (Lord Jim, Nostromo, Heart of Darkness) written in 1915 and published in 1916.

An anonymous narrator quits his work as first mate, loaded with a youthful energy which does not find satisfaction. While meditating already on the return in homeland Bangkok, he almost casually obtains his first order. The charge will be very arduous. During the journey, the entire crew is victim of a fever which reduces sailors to their own ghosts, also because of the mysterious stealing of medicines.

The situation precipitates because of a period of lacking wind which “freezes” everything in a nightmare where nothingness seems to pursue an accomplished direction. Particularly speaking for the narrator, first mate Burns’ rants are obsessive, sure that the spirit of the previous captain, dead because of sickness and therefore without an own reason on that ship, now pursues him. The captain will carry on his own duty till the end, without ever give up (definitely) to fatigue and madness.

The story recalls The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

by Coleridge, and among them The Tempest and Hamlet, often directly quoted.

The author includes a conclusive note in order to explain that he does not aim (only) at the exposition of the disturbing events caused by circumstances which seem supernatural – he does not give up, for instance, to refer in the novel to a laughter that “erects the hairs” of officer Burns, an exorcism after which everything returns slowly to normality.

Conrad writes this text during First World War. The book is dedicated to son Boris, a trench soldier, and to his young companions. For all of them, youth will be a gift which they will not fully enjoy.

Crossing the line of shadow does not mean entering an otherworldly place.

The novel is not a manual on how to cross that line: this happens “by itself” and “without realizing it”.

Conrad knew that he was unable to do something to save the son: he writes the story of a captain without name on an unnamed ship. Holding the reason, its sense of duty, hope, fellowship, is the only method, at least, to hope to survive the dangers that all of us are called to confront.
