As a leader in global skills development, City & Guilds work with governments, organisations and education centres to provide work-based learning programmes in industries and sectors which offer the strongest prospects for jobs and growth.
By completing a work-based learning programmes that helps build competency, to support better prospects for young people and their appeal to organisations and wider society. We create flexible learning pathways that support lifelong employability, because we believe that people deserve the opportunity to train and learn again and again – gaining new skills at every stage of life, regardless of where they start.
All our courses on offer have a set GLH (guided learning hours) to complete and qualify for a Level 1 Certificate. The GLH for our courses are in excess of 100 hours therefore you should complete your course and achieve an accreditation within 39 weeks (full school year September - July) Should you attend 2 days per week then like many others students you could potentially leave with two Level 1 certificates within the full school year. It’s really down to how you apply your training and improve your skills level as you progress.
For any pass certificate there requires an element of study and completed course work, this course work is kept within your own file as you progress and develop evidence that you have received training where modules are completed and achieved. The majority of your time will be developing your hand skills and working in a safe and mature working environment.
You need to discuss with your school and your careers lead that you have an interest in vocational training. We can arrange a guided visit around the centre with your school and or your parent/ guardian. On the taster days we offer you can sample the different courses available or have a number of visits to make sure its right for you. Your school will liaise with the Head of Centre to confirm a suitable course or taster days and or reserve your space for registration.

Within the Vocational Centre we have a designated area for the safe working practices of motor vehicle repairs. The course breaks down by applying various tasks of motor vehicle repairs and completing work sheets to gain evidence of training and achievements. Further through the course the students will be tested on the areas they have covered using City & Guilds assessment criteria. The modules will include: wheels & tyres, brakes, cooling, lubrication, fuel & exhaust, steering and workshop bench skills.
The course will also cover the basic principals of engine operating functions and component identification, introduction to 12v electric's and body & interior cleaning. The health & safety aspect of the course, the students will be trained in the correct use of handling tools and equipment, compulsory use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which is supplied, such as overalls and boots. Further PPE supplied to be utilised where deemed appropriate such as barrier cream, gloves, safety glasses, ear defenders / ear plugs. Heavy machinery such as the vehicle hoist and tyre fitting equipment will involve close one to one training and job sheets issued where students will complete their understating of the process and recap on all aspects the task including the recording of PPE and environmental issues and health & safety hazards noted whilst carrying out the tasks.
We aim to keep our students safe within our workshop and include safe lifting techniques and protection from potential harmful chemicals used in the motor industry such as mineral oils and possible causes of skin irritation and the protection available. The construction area consist of a variety of house bricks, building blocks, paving, sand and equipment that would be found when visiting a construction site.
Therefore training is given in the safe handling of materials used, and we ensure the student through training has the skills, knowledge, experience to carry out the work in a way that secures health and safety.
The students are supplied with PPE (personal protective equipment) which includes overalls, safety boots and builders gloves. To eliminate the potential hazard of brick dust we do not machine cut any bricks or paving. Students are trained on the safe working practice of using a cement mixer, which is a supervised event in the workshop and safety glasses are also provided to protect their eyes from chemicals splashing during the mixing and loading process.
The chemicals and associated hazards used in cement is minimalised as training is given with wet sand whereby the modules worked on can be disassembled and area cleaned, materials recycled for the next trainees.
The students will develop their hand skills and become familiar with the use of small tools and spirit levels. Due to the manual work within the industry students are trained in manual handling techniques.
Health & Safety modules are applied within the course to cover many aspects of the construction industry. These modules will form part of the City & Guilds Level 1 assessment criteria prior to gaining a qualification certificate in the subject.
