DEAR PARENTS AND CARERS I find it almost unbelievable that I have already reached the end of my first year of headship at Park View. This year has been both challenging and rewarding, but most importantly, I now fully understand what a genuine privilege it is to be working closely with so many inspirational students, staff, governors and parents.

Park View is rapidly moving from strength to strength. This Summer Update is just a taste of the wonderful opportunities our students have been offered over the past few months, but doesn’t report on the outstanding teaching and learning that our young people are receiving in lessons, every day. We are constantly striving to ensure all our students leave us as confident and successful ‘Park View Learners’, able to succeed in whichever fields they choose to pursue. It is our mission to ensure that every child reaches their true potential.

One of our key goals for 2015/16 is to develop our communications with parents and the wider community and we hope that this much improved resource will enable parents and the community to find the information they require both quickly and easily.

relaunched our Park View Parents’ Association. This meeting was a huge success and attended by well over 100 current and future Park View families. We are holding our next meeting on Wednesday 30th September and would love to see even more families joining us for an informal discussion around our future curriculum and anything else you might like to talk about.

I’ll finish by saying a huge well done and thank you to all of our wonderful Park View students and staff. Even though this year has been very hard work, I really cannot wait to continue back on our journey to outstanding in September. Please have a restful, rewarding and safe summer break!

YEAR 9 GRADUATION The Year 9s were awarded with their graduation scrolls on 1st July 2015.

Over 200 students graduated Year 9.

With the top 50 students graduating with honours; this was based on their English, Maths and Science levels.

The ceremony was a great success, not only were the students awarded for their effort, they did it in front of their parents! Attendees were also treated to thoughtful speeches and performances – all by the Year 9 students themselves.

very year at Park View we celebrate and explore the different cultures of the world through our internationally themed festival day, Parkstock.

This is a day when students and staff can come together and celebrate those things which unite all people of the world, whilst we recognise and respect cultural differences.

During the day there were many fantastic lessons providing our students with a truly global experience. These included discovering the culture of Japan through food and drink, the traditions of Indian theatre, African mask making, and games from Pakistan.

To finish the day, a very talented band of musicians from Year 9 played us out with Britpop classics.

We were also joined for the day by a Year 5 class from Chestnuts primary school who visited a recreation of Jamaica, as well as joining in with some of our other activities. It was a truly fantastic day, and the countdown to next year has begun.

CONNECTING CLASSROOMS Ms ROMANCZUK AND Ms GADMAN GO TO GHANA!

F

ollowing a lot of hard work from Ms Gadman, Park View received the amazing news that the British Council would provide funding for two teachers to visit schools for a research project in Ghana.

We were the privileged two and in May half term we set off to Accra with two other schools in Haringey (the Brook and Willow) to take part in the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme.

We went with the aim of learning more about inclusiveness and how it is achieved in other schools, and wow did we learn a lot about that and so much more! Over five days we visited three very different schools: a British International School (combined primary, secondary and sixth form); a special needs school (age range 6-28); and a completely inclusive school that combines mainstream and special needs with a vast age range of 1-21.

We were astounded by the inclusive school – their community spirit was electric! The acceptance and respect of all students and staff towards each other was so clear through the way everyone played and ate together at lunch, the beautiful displays around the building, and the whole

school celebrations in which absolutely everyone (including me and Ms Gadman) took part.

We had some fantastic experiences outside of the classrooms too. We decided that the best way to learn about Ghanaian culture would be to fully immerse ourselves in it. So we tried all the local dishes – from jollof rice and fufu to fried plantain and even stewed snake! We also watched a traditional drumming and dance performance, visited some castles steeped in history, and squashed ourselves into battered old tro-tros to get around town (tro-tros are minibuses that serve as public transport – they’re a great way of getting to know the local people).

All in all we had an unforgettable experience.

We have come back to London with both a new perspective on inclusion in schools and a first-hand understanding of Ghanaian culture – and no sunburn whatsoever!

HIGH ATTAINERS AT PARK VIEW

O

ver the past weeks eight of our students completed this year’s Scholars Club at Park View. The Scholars Club is an intensive programme for our high attaining pupils.

Students were tutored by a PhD student over six weeks in small university-style tutorial groups and then had to produce a 2,000 word essay on their tutor’s area of expertise. Students attended two university trips: The School of African and Oriental Studies, and a graduation ceremony at Royal Holloway.

Assignments were marked in alignment with assessment criteria at AS-Level; therefore a 2.1 would be roughly a grade B at AS-Level.

YEAR 9 TRIP IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM AND VISIT OF A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

D

uring Holocaust theme day, Year 9s had the opportunity to meet a Holocaust survivor and learn more about WW2 and its lasting impact.

We had two Year 9 forms per day from the 23rd - 26th March.

Year 9 rotated between four different Holocaust workshops on different aspects of the matter devised by the Humanities team. The students were preparing for the visit of Eve Kugler, a Holocaust survivor who has been visiting schools for many years. The Year 9s were fascinated and humbled by Eve and asked some very pertinent questions, demonstrating their enquiring minds.

Thanks to Haringey Council for their timely and professional service in pruning the trees from the Downhill Park side to reduce overhang onto the school site. And further thanks for their financial support to enhance the EDEN project site with additional fencing at the Belmont Road end of the school site.

They had the chance to continue their historical and citizenship education with a workshop at the Imperial War Museum and collected information about the Holocaust. In the workshop, students engaged with objects and testimonies from Nazi Europe. The students asked many questions and were very curious during their visit, acting as powerful ambassadors for Park View.

Both days really gave a chance for Year 9 to develop their knowledge and their experience of the Holocaust and the risks of extremist views.

MOCK GENERAL ELECTION THEME DAY

O

n May 7th Park View held a Mock General election theme Day for all students in years 7 to 10.

Dividing students into four groups, we used imaginary parties: Tomorrow, Vision, Progress and Transform. Having these original parties meant that the students had to focus on developing their own policies and avoided being influenced by the current parties or the leaders’ personalities.

The students analysed and evaluated a selection of policies, then chose their favourites to cover international, national, local and school focused issues. They rehearsed and presented their manifesto to their form and then they voted in one of four Polling Stations set up and run by students and staff in the school. They used the Alternative Voting (AV) system, which allowed them to consider the fairness of our democratic system.

In the afternoon they looked at the policies and publicity of the real UK parties and participated in an election using the conventional ‘First Past the Post’ system (FPTP). This vote resulted in a Labour victory, with Greens in second place across the school.

It was a very successful day and students were highly motivated.

It has boosted their political literacy and understanding of British democratic processes.

GCSE ART EXHIBITION 2015

O

n 17th June the annual exhibition of work by our departing Year 11 GCSE Art students was recognised.

Work on show demonstrated the broad range of skills and techniques employed, developed and honed by the students over the two year course, from painting and drawing to collage, montage, photography and video.

Reading into the work, intellectual and diverse concepts and approaches were enjoyed and critiqued by a healthy turn out of visitors, including students choosing GCSE Art next year, parents, prospective parents, teachers, governors and some of the exhibiting artists themselves.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS VISIT PARK VIEW

The day’s schedule involved a welcome and presentation outlining the main structures of schooling in the UK, the unique and diverse Park View context and highlighted the peer mentoring team, who then led them on a tour of the school and selected lessons. This was followed by a nice cup of tea in the staff room, a ‘speed-dating’ Q&A session with a group of Year 9 and 10 students. We rounded off our time together with an enthusiastic and talkative lunch in the canteen.

YEAR 10 SWANAGE TRIP

O

n 19th May 2015, 65 brave Year 10 students arrived in Swanage for an adventure collecting primary data about the coastal management of the area. They were well prepared and accepted the bad weather with rain, the fog and the hail without moaning to collect great accurate data on a coastal town of England. The students worked well in the evening and really enjoyed the sun and the Dorset high coast on 20th May. Thank you to all the staff who gave their precious time and really They have all demonstrated geographical skill, helped during these exciting 36 hours: Mr Collins, Ms Malcolm and wonderful teamwork and independent learning skills. Park View raised an amazing £630 for the Oxfam Nepal Disaster Fund. £250 was donated by Wilson Jones (the school’s catering company), £250 by the school, and £130 from the students and staff.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING

W

e would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all our parents and carers who attended the re-launch meeting for our Parents’ Association. A huge number of parents and carers came along and showed their support for the school and we are extremely grateful.

The meeting included a presentation from Mr Webster on his vision for the school, a brief presentation from Ms Clarke on our aims for the Parents’ Association, and then an opportunity for parents and carers to give suggestions and to speak to members of staff over some tea and cake.

Future meetings will include presentations from a variety of staff members from across the school and discussions about key aspects of school life. We really want to use the Parents’

Association as a way to get parents and carers more involved in the life of the school so we hope you will have lots of ideas to share with us. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 30th September and will focus on your views and ideas about our school curriculum.

We hope to see as many parents and carers there as possible!

YEAR 8 SNOWDONIA NATIONAL PARK - WALES VISIT

F

rom 8th – 12th June a group of 29 Year 8 students took part in an outward bounds residential in Snowdonia National Park, Wales as part of a rewards trip for making excellent progress across all of their subjects.

Students were joined by a group from Northumberland Park School and worked alongside those students, qualified instructors, mentors from HSBC and teachers from both schools to accomplish goals and complete challenges set for themselves.

Undoubtedly the hardest challenge was the 2-day expedition, which included climbing a mountain, walking huge distances and setting up camp for the night. Students also had to pack their own survival kit, cook their own meals and carry everything they needed for the two days. It was a huge effort.

Other activities included canoeing/kayaking down rivers and in the sea, rock climbing, high ropes, a jog and dip and a jetty jump into some very cold water. Our students were fantastic and threw themselves into everything, showing resilience and determination to overcome the challenges set. One of the things that stood out from the week was how the students supported each other through difficulties.

Finally, a huge thank you to Mr McQuaid for organising the trip, Mr Hamer and Ms Kendall for accompanying students on

the trip, to HSBC for helping to fund the trip and to the students who made it so memorable.

PARK VIEW TALENT SHOW 2015

une saw Year 10 Student Voice host a spectacular talent show. The talent was of such a high calibre that the judges found it hard to decide.

The deserving winner was Kai Rowe (Year 9) with his confident and beautiful rendition of ’I would rather go blind’ by Etta James, but each and every act deserves the praise and applause they recived. Special thanks go to the Performing Arts department who, as always, went above and beyond to ensure the students got the best technical and musical support possible. Also a big thanks to the wonderful judges.

It wasn’t just the finalists that demonstrated talent and skill: Josephine and Mustafa displayed true professionalism in their role as master of ceremonies and handled the challenges of hosting with great aplomb, Step into Park View Dance performed their devised piece based on slavery and Vocalicious performed ‘Somewhere Only We Know” A fantastic night was had by all.

YEAR 9 HISTORY WAR MEMORIAL COMPETITION

T

his year has been a very busy one for the History department with trips and theme days galore! Recently there was an exciting competition launched for year 9 Historians. The directive was to design a memorial for an unknown soldier and the prize is a trip abroad in October 2015.

We had lots of fantastic entries, all displaying how creative and independent our Year 9 students are - however there could be only one winner.

Mr Webster and his team decided that the winning entry was from Mergim Berisha and Rahiel Madden-Rahman from 9A; the judges thought the boys memorial was imaginative and demonstrated good team work. You can see their fantastic memorial on the photo.

Runners up with an amazing memorial were Elena Christoforou and Viktoriya Suleman from 9V, their memorial was really well designed and thought provoking. Both teams won house points for their houses and all entries showed how innovative and engaged Park View students are. Well done to those who entered!

ROAD TO WIMBLEDON 2015

ark View Tennis Squad took part in a ‘Road to Wimbledon Tournament ‘ on Friday 8th May.

It was a privilege to view all matches being played to a high standard, with sportsmanship and fair play remaining exemplary throughout.

Congratulations goes to all taking part with a special mention to the top four players.

PARK VIEW STUDENTS WOWED AT TFL SAFETY AND CITIZENSHIP ASSEMBLY

A

ccording to current research, more than 1, 000 students are injured on roads near their schools each month. With statistics like these, Park View took positive action to ensure that our students are safe and responsible on their travels.

Awareness, Respect and Responsibility was the message of the day from Transport for London representative, William Wybrew.

In the assembly Mr Wybrew gave a timely reminder to our years 7, 8 and 9 students about safe travel in and around London.

Students were shown clips, given statistics, learnt about the power of their zip cards, shared their experiences and reflected on their rights and responsibilities as commuters. By the end of

the assembly many pledged to think more carefully about their travel so they can remain safe and be model citizens in our community. A job well done.

DRAMA UPDATE

O

n Monday 29th June, talented KS3 Drama students took a Level 3 exam in Improvisation. This qualification is worth UCAS points so will be very useful when these students apply for university places in the future.

Year 8 students directed Year 7 actors in Commedia Dell’arte performances as part of the Parkstock celebration of diversity.

Year 11 GCSE Drama students stunned audiences with their powerful final exam performances, which were shared with parents and staff.

Year 10 GCSE Drama students have completed the first 30% of their course, with many students performing to a high standard.

They are currently writing up their first piece of coursework. In partnership with Mountview, Park View will be offering a course for talented Year 9 and 10 Drama students to develop their skills and prepare them for the rigors of an acting degree. This will take place in the autumn term.
