Every school year at Parkside tells a story—and the story of 2024–2025 was one of discovery, connection, and looking ahead. This year reminded us again that Parkside is not just a school; it is a place where children, families, and educators come together to imagine what’s possible and to build it, side by side.
In every classroom, we saw sparks of creativity—from inventions taking shape in the 3rd floor “lab” to new friendships formed in our growing after-school program. In every celebration, we honored the cultures, traditions, and histories that enrich our community and make Parkside stronger. And at every turn, we witnessed our students’ joy, resilience, and growth.
As we prepare for Parkside’s 40th Anniversary in 2026, we find ourselves thinking about the generations of children and families who have walked through our red doors. Their journeys remind us that the work we do today—supporting each child to discover their voice, their confidence, and their potential—echoes long into the future.
We are deeply thankful for the many hands and hearts that make this work possible. From the Parents Association, whose energy keeps our community connected, to the countless volunteers and donors whose commitment sustains us—you are the reason Parkside thrives.
The pages of this Annual Report offer only a glimpse of the year we shared. But the true story is written every day, in the laughter of our students, the \dedication of our staff, and the belief of our community. Together, we continue to honor our past while building a future full of promise.
With gratitude and excitement for the journey ahead,
Albina Miller and Leslie Thorne Co-Heads of School
Message from the Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
It is a privilege to write to you for the first time as President of The Parkside School’s Board of Directors. My family’s connection to Parkside is deeply personal—my son Mateo graduated in 2019, and through his journey we experienced firsthand the transformative impact of this community. Like so many of you, I know what it means for a child to be understood, encouraged, and empowered behind those iconic big red doors. That experience continues to inspire my commitment to Parkside and to the generations of students who follow.
This past year underscored the strength of our community. With the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the generosity of our families, alumni, and friends, Parkside continues to deliver an education that is both rigorous and deeply nurturing. The work happening within our doors is transformative— not just for our students, but for their families, and ultimately for the broader communities our children go on to shape.
The Board is committed to ensuring that this work endures and expands. We are focused on sustaining Parkside’s strong financial foundation, supporting our exceptional teachers and staff, and investing in programs that spark creativity, build confidence, and honor the diverse identities and strengths of every child. Private support is critical to these efforts, and your partnership—through giving, volunteering, and championing Parkside’s mission—makes an immeasurable difference.
As we look toward Parkside’s 40th Anniversary in the spring, the Board is especially focused on our responsibility to both honor the past and prepare for the future. We see an incredible opportunity to celebrate four decades of impact while laying the groundwork for the next generation of Parkside students and families.
On behalf of the entire Board, thank you for the trust you place in us, and for the role you play in sustaining and strengthening The Parkside School. I am honored to serve this community, and I look forward to the work we will do together in the years ahead.
Warmly,
Nischal Pai P’19 President, Board of Directors
Celebrating Community Through Culture: DEIB at Parkside
At The Parkside School, we believe that learning about and honoring diverse cultures is essential to building a compassionate, connected community. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are not separate programs or stand-alone lessons—they are values woven into every part of school life. Throughout the year, Parkside students engage with traditions, histories, and stories that deepen their understanding of themselves and others while fostering empathy, curiosity, and respect.
“At Parkside, DEIB is not a one-time lesson or single event—it is embedded into the way we teach, learn, and grow together.”
Learning from History, Honoring Identity
Through observances like Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Juneteenth, Native American Heritage Month, and Pride Month, students explore themes of justice, resilience, and belonging at developmentally appropriate levels. From learning about civil rights heroes, inventors, and pioneering women to discussing fairness, identity, and the importance of kindness, each classroom conversation highlights both the challenges and the triumphs of historically marginalized communities. Music, literature, and art help bring these lessons to life, making history both meaningful and memorable.
Celebrating Traditions and Culture
Cultural celebrations are also opportunities for joy, connection, and community building. This year, our school embraced traditions like Lunar New Year with storytelling, food, and art, coordinated in partnership with our Parents Association. In movement and yoga classes, students celebrated Diwali, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Halloween through dance, music, and reflection on themes such as light, kindness, and change. Each celebration allowed students to not only learn about the practices of others but also to participate actively—strengthening their appreciation of both similarities and differences.
Building Belonging Every Day
Across all grades, DEIB work at Parkside centers on creating a sense of belonging for every child. In younger classrooms, this may look like celebrating family diversity, talking about kindness and bravery, or exploring the beauty of difference through stories and art. In older grades, students engage in deeper discussions about history, identity, equity, and respect, learning how their voices and actions can make a difference.
Throughout the year, these lessons build upon one another, reinforcing the truth that diversity makes our community stronger. Whether reflecting on Indigenous history, honoring women’s contributions, exploring the meaning of Pride, or celebrating the resilience of Black Americans, students learn that honoring culture and identity is inseparable from honoring one another.
At Parkside, our cultural celebrations are not just events on a calendar—they are lived expressions of our values. By weaving DEIB into daily life, we help our students develop the empathy, understanding, and confidence they need to thrive in a diverse world.
“The Inventions Unit empowers students to see themselves as creators.”
— Kristen Guerriero, 3-2 Teacher
Innovation in Action: The 3-2 Inventions Unit
Each spring, our 3-2 students dive into one of our favorite projects of the year: the Inventions Unit. This culminating project sparks creativity, problemsolving, and critical thinking as students step into the shoes of inventors.
The process begins with inspiration. Students learn about notable inventors and explore the impact of existing inventions, both big and small. With this knowledge in mind, they set out to create inventions of their own— each with a clear action and purpose. They brainstorm and draft blueprint drawings, then bring their visions to life using recycled materials and classroom supplies. It is incredible to watch their sketches transform into real prototypes.
Throughout the project, the classroom buzzes with energy and innovation. We see students’ wheels turning as they problem-solve, adapt, and refine their designs. The joy on their faces as their creations take shape is unmatched— it’s a highlight of the school year for both students and teachers alike.
The Inventions Unit not only celebrates imagination but also empowers children to see themselves as creators, capable of turning ideas into reality. It’s a fitting way to close the year: with curiosity, ingenuity, and plenty of joy.
Admissions in Focus: Navigating the Special Needs Landscape
Andie Levinger, Director of Placement
I was fortunate to become Parkside’s Director of Placement in 2023 after serving for many years as one of the school’s occupational therapists. I first joined Parkside’s Occupational Therapy department in 2002, and from the start, the school’s team approach shaped how I practiced and even how I parented. Though I stepped away to raise my children, I returned in 2019 after they reached young adulthood. My work in other settings during that time only reinforced what makes Parkside unique: our multidisciplinary model. Here, we problem-solve together to meet individual needs, adapt classrooms and curriculum to each child’s learning style, and experiment with sensory strategies to promote engagement.
“Parkside operates as a laboratory of innovation when we share our vision, sensibilities, and expertise.”
Partnering with Families from the Start
As Director of Placement, I now have the privilege of engaging with parents at the very start of their Parkside journey. The educational landscape in New York City can be daunting. In recent years, more private schools have opened, offering families a wider array of choices. The Department of Education increasingly encourages parents to trial Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms before being considered for a funded school like Parkside.
While ICT classrooms can be wellorganized and differentiated, the larger scale can sometimes make it difficult for children with language-based learning differences to get the individualized attention they need. By the time families arrive at Parkside, I know they have already navigated a maze of advocacy and research. With that in mind, I strive to make the admissions process an open and respectful dialogue.
“No question is too big or too small, and every conversation helps build connection and trust.”
A Holistic Lens on Each Child
Throughout the process, we approach prospective students with the same multidisciplinary, whole-child lens I practiced as a staff OT. We carefully review reports from psychologists, therapists, and teachers to understand strengths, challenges, developmental history, and special interests.
We continue the dialogue with parents, doctors, therapists, and teachers, gathering insights that go beyond the written reports. We observe children at their schools to see their interactions, sensitivities, and skills in real time. When children visit Parkside, they meet with our educational directors, admissions team, and often therapists, teachers, and peers.
“We approach each child with a holistic lens—looking at strengths, challenges, and the whole story.”
The goal is twofold: to give parents a window into the comprehensive Parkside methodology—both therapeutic and academic—and to develop a deep, nuanced understanding of each child.
Building Trust and Community
We cannot always predict exactly how a child will thrive here. But by staying curious, encouraging dialogue, and centering on families, we begin to build trust and community from the very first phone call.
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future: 40 Years
In 1986, two visionary educators— Albina Miller and Leslie Thorne— opened the doors of The Parkside School to a single five-year-old child in a modest six-room space on West 100th Street. Their vision was simple but profound: to create a school that integrated strong academics with therapeutic support for children with
language-based learning differences. They imagined a place where students would be seen, heard, and understood— a place where the whole child could thrive.
From those first days with just two teachers, Parkside has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 80 students and more than 50 dedicated educators, therapists, and support staff. Our program has expanded to include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work, adaptive physical education, and a rich array of arts and movement opportunities. What began as a bold idea has become a model of innovation and compassion in special education.
of Impact
Transforming Lives Across Generations
Over the past four decades, Parkside has touched the lives of hundreds of students and families. Alumni often share how the lessons they learned here extend far beyond academics—they carry with them the confidence, strategies, and sense of belonging that Parkside nurtured.
Recent alumni stories highlight this enduring impact:
Meg Nye ’98 is living in Rocky Point, NY, and volunteers at Warrior Ranch, where she works with horses and supports wounded veterans.
Dana Buckholz ’00 attends NYU Nursing School after having been a researcher in a fellowship program at the National Institute of Health Cancer Institute.
Tommy Roche ’03 recently worked at the NYC mayoral primary election, helping to support strong voter turnout despite the summer heat. He shares that being a poll worker is a great way to engage with voters and encourages other Parkside alums to consider getting involved.
Aidan Gibbons ’05 earned a degree in math and statistics at Harvard, where he also minored in environmental science and public policy. He now lives in Washington, DC where he is as an energy consultant at Charles River Associates working on long-term decarbonization and reliability strategy for power utilities.
Alexander Inglese ’08 plays guitar in a wedding band and regularly performs at various cocktail hours.
Russell Chan ’11 is studying electrical engineering technology at RIT. He says, “Despite all the math I have to do, it’s been fun, though I miss the simpler days of working with the Parkside kids.”
Sylvia Guerrero ’11 recently accepted a position as an assistant teacher at the Goddard School in Stuyvesant Town.
From one student in 1986 to 80 today, Parkside has remained true to its mission of serving the whole child.
Elizabeth Leichter ’12 has recently moved to Phoenix, AZ, where she is settling into her new apartment and making friends. She has been active in volunteer projects with First Place and will begin classes in January to pursue a baking certification program.
Alexander Soiefer ’13 graduated from college this past June (2025) and has just started his first job as a software engineer at Humming Heads in Japan. His early interest in computing was sparked years ago when he got involved with Tech Kids Unlimited during his time at Parkside.
Harish Ahilan ’14 graduated in May 2025 from Landmark College with an Associate’s Degree in General Studies, concentrating in Communications. He is now working on a bachelors degree in Web and Digital Media at Beacon College in Florida.
Austin Lambert ’17 is a member of the Class of 2028 at Rice University in Houston, where he is majoring in business and sports management.
Ella Arazi ’24 has had a big year of growth, truly enjoying her classes and coursework while building supportive friendships. Her family shares that her self-confidence has been growing.
Elijah Snyder-Richards ’24 had the chance to appear in a walk-on role for “The Gilded Age” this past spring and had a great time with the experience.
These stories — and so many more — remind us that Parkside’s influence reaches well into the future, equipping students with the tools and resilience to thrive in whatever paths they choose.
For forty years, Parkside’s red doors have opened to new students, new families, and new possibilities—while every alumnus carries forward the confidence, strategies, and sense of belonging that began here.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As we approach our 40th Anniversary in the spring of 2026, we pause to honor the extraordinary journey that has brought us here. Parkside has always been a place of growth—not just for our students, but for our teachers, therapists, staff, families, and the broader education community.
The celebration ahead will not only commemorate the past but also set the stage for the future. Guided by our mission to serve the whole child, we continue to evolve our programs, expand our partnerships, and strengthen our community of support. Just as Albina and Leslie envisioned in 1986, we remain committed to being a school where innovation, empathy, and excellence come together every day.
Forty years later, Parkside’s red doors are still opening—to new students, new families, and new possibilities. We celebrate the countless lives transformed, and we look forward to building on this legacy for decades to come.
We hope you will join us as we celebrate Parkside’s past, present, and future with our alumni, families, and friends.

From the Parents Association: A Year of Joy, Laughter and Parkside Magic
If there’s one thing this school year proved, it’s that the Parkside Parents Association knows how to make magic happen. From spooky costumes and delicious cookies to parent volunteers at the book fair, and fun at the year-end picnic, our community showed up with open hearts, helping hands, and the kind of energy that makes Parkside—well, Parkside.
We enjoyed Playdates in the Park, giving kids room to play and parents time to connect. Our Halloween Parade in Central Park brought out superheroes, princesses, and plenty of laughter, while the Book Fair filled the school with the excitement of a special guest, alumni parent Al Roker P’14 for a special book signing (and a few new favorite reads for the kiddos, too!).
The Holiday Party once again transformed the building into a festive wonderland of food, music, and fun—thanks to an army of volunteers who made it glow! Later in the spring, the Flower Power Bake Sale added color, community, and plenty of sweet treats to the season.
We also took time to celebrate the heart of Parkside—our teachers and staff— during Teacher Appreciation Week, when families came together to show their
gratitude in creative and heartfelt ways, including delicious lunch and breakfast spreads for the whole team. We were grateful to local partners such as Playa Betty’s, Chirping Chicken, and Kossar’s, who offered generous discounts and helped make each meal extra special for our community. And of course, the Endof-Year Picnic brought it all home with sunshine, play, and pure joy.
But the real story of the PA isn’t just about events—it’s about connection. It’s the chats in at the New Parent Cocktail Party, the helping hand at drop-off, the bouncing of ideas in the WhatApp group… and the feeling that no one does this alone. Every parent who lends time, talent, or good humor helps make Parkside the warm, supportive community we all cherish.
As we look ahead, and pass the reigns to next year’s PA President, Claire Stevick, we’re excited to keep these traditions alive and explore new ways to bring families together. Whether you bake, decorate, organize, or simply show up— we’re so glad you’re part of this family.
With gratitude, Ivy Venafro & Rachel Levine 2024-2025 PA Co-Presidents
“Your way of thinking is not a detour— it’s a direction.”
— Rebecca Sidi ’17
Celebrating the Class of 2025
On June 17, 2025, Parkside gathered for our Graduation and Achievement Ceremony, a day filled with joy, pride, and reflection. This milestone is always special, but this year’s celebration carried an added resonance as we welcomed back alumna Rebecca Sidi ’17 as our commencement speaker.
Now a chemistry major at Barnard College of Columbia University, Rebecca delivered a powerful, heartfelt address that reminded us of the promise and possibility Parkside nurtures in every student. Reflecting on her journey—from being diagnosed with ADD as a young child to thriving in college—she spoke candidly about the challenges of learning differently and the unwavering support Parkside provided.
Her message to the graduates was clear: “Your way of thinking is not a detour—it’s a direction.” Rebecca’s words of encouragement and gratitude deeply resonated with students, families, and faculty, underscoring Parkside’s lasting impact.
“Receiving support from Parkside changed my life because it gave me something I know it gave you: a direction and a foundational belief that who you are is more than enough.”
Honoring the Graduates
Following Rebecca’s inspiring words, the spotlight turned to the Class of 2025, whose accomplishments we celebrated with pride. Graduates will continue their educational journeys at schools including The Computer School, Lowell School, Aaron School and Windward School.
These placements reflect the range of strengths, talents, and dreams that our students carry forward. While we will miss their presence in our classrooms and hallways, we know they leave Parkside ready for success, supported by the confidence and strategies they have gained here.
A Community of Belief and Belonging
Graduation is always a bittersweet moment. It is a day of celebration, but also of transition. For our faculty and families, it is a reminder that Parkside is not just about what students achieve during their time here, but about how they continue to grow and flourish long after they leave our red doors.
The Class of 2025 has left its mark on Parkside, and we cannot wait to see how they will shape the world ahead. Congratulations, graduates—you will always be part of the Parkside community.

The Importance of Giving
Your generosity plays a crucial role in sustaining The Parkside School’s mission to provide exceptional education for children with language-based learning differences and disabilities. Gifts from our community enhance our programs, support our dedicated faculty, and ensure that every child thrives in a nurturing environment. Your contribution, no matter the size, makes a lasting impact on the lives of our students.
Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts. These unrestricted gifts support every aspect of school life, from innovative teaching programs to scholarships. We encourage every family, alumni, and friend of Parkside to participate at a level that is comfortable for you.
Recurring Gifts
Make a continuous impact by setting up a recurring gift. Monthly or quarterly donations provide Parkside with a steady stream of support, allowing us to plan for the future and continue enriching the student experience year-round.
Gifts of Securities
A gift of securities, such as stocks or bonds, is a tax-effective way to support Parkside. Donating appreciated securities can result in significant tax savings while making a meaningful contribution to the school’s growth.
Planned Giving
By including Parkside in your estate plans, you can ensure the long-term success of our programs and leave a lasting legacy. Planned gifts provide critical support for future generations of Parkside students, allowing us to continue our mission for years to come.
