Message from the Co-Heads of School This Annual Report strives to capture the determination, excellence and generosity of The Parkside School community.

It demonstrates the commitment of each donor and volunteer who supports our mission-driven approach to special education, and highlights the growth your support has empowered in our students.

In these pages, you’ll read about a range of success stories, large and small, that illustrate the impact of our “whole child” approach to educating students with language based learning challenges.

This report also serves as a tribute to the 435 donors and volunteers who, throughout this past school year, ensured Parkside’s continued success by volunteering countless hours and contributing $871,308 through our Annual Fund, Spring Benefit and Parents Association.

Thanks to the exceptional leadership of the Parents Association by Corinne Bilerman, Patty Adams Martinez and Jon Mah, the 2018-2019 school year saw many exciting new events, including Parkside’s first-ever Parent-Child Dance, and a completely reimagined Spring Benefit, the “Casino Royale,” in support of our beloved arts and movement programs. We tip our hats to Benefit Co-Chairs Dot Cates and Andria Younger who curated a night of games and camaraderie that resulted in $126,556 raised expressly in support of our vital art, music, drama, yoga, gym, library and technology programs.

Our warmest appreciation also to Caroline Russo and Jay Kim for fearlessly leading our Annual Fund Committee this year.

Their efforts resulted in the first increase in unrestricted donations our school has seen in more than eight years, once again achieving 100% parent participation, and reaching 31% participation among alumni families.

Our historic commitment to an interdisciplinary, individualized and collaborative teaching style continues to lay the groundwork for students to discover and capitalize on their strengths, learn to express themselves and build meaningful relationships, and to acquire the tools and strategies that will propel them towards success in middle school and beyond. The work of our dynamic team of educators and therapists is made possible only by your unwavering commitment to our school.

Message from the Board of Directors Dear Parkside Community, On behalf of the Board of Directors, and as a proud parent of an alumnus, I again thank you for your ongoing support of Parkside.

Your involvement and commitment to Parkside’s unique approach to special education take on particular significance during this pivotal period in our school’s history.

The board’s resolve to ensure Parkside’s long-term financial viability was central to our work over the course of the past year.

It is a privilege to work alongside a team of parents, alumni parents and friends who understand and are committed to the importance of Parkside’s founding principle: to build a model program that combines current research and transdisciplinary expertise in order to educate children with language-related learning difficulties, and to serve families from diverse socio-economic backgrounds regardless of their ability to pay tuition.

At the time of this publication, we are actively petitioning the New York State Department of Education in Albany for a substantial increase in the tuition rate that Parkside receives.

The success of this effort would mean an adjustment of our tuition rate to more closely align it with those of our peer schools, so I look forward to providing you with updates on the results as they unfold.

As I anticipate what’s to come and grapple with the possibility that a decision to convert Parkside to a fully independent school may be in our near future, I also reflect on what has brought us to our current success: a parent and alumni community committed to our continuing mission, an unmatched team of educators, and Co-Heads of School who routinely inspire all of us to defy the odds.

Your demonstration of generosity and faith in our school is the momentum that continues to move Parkside forward. Thank you for championing our program, and for all that you do in support of our students.

Our Success Stories

Running “Just Right” Class 3-1

“

While there have been so many individual student success stories through the year, one that stands out occurred when a child was having a lot of difficulty expressing herself and being part of a group. Addressing these difficulties is central to what we strive to achieve as teachers of Parkside’s youngest students.

As a team, we looked at the child’s strengths and challenges, each of us taking on different responsibilities, one of the defining features of Parkside’s approach.

As her teachers, we gave this child an accessible method of describing her brain and body in a way that was playful, engaging, and appealed to her interests, using a pink glittery chart that described her body like a car engine. When her engine was running “just right,” she was ready to learn. In a matter of weeks, this child was able to communicate how she was feeling with teachers, and was given a space to go to when she needed to regroup and take some time for herself. Not only did this allow the child to feel empowered and successful, but it gave more space for her teachers and therapists to build a stronger relationship with her and intervene with what she truly needs as a student. She felt validated, heard, and loved. This child now feels even more safe in our space, and as our biggest priority, we are vigilant in continuing to make her feel understood.

As any teacher, parent, or caregiver knows, six-year-olds absolutely love superheroes. In our class, it became a constant play theme for the year. Though exciting and engaging, there is one big problem with superhero play: in order for there to be superheroes, there must be villains. Inevitably, someone would be dubbed the “bad guy” during play. Over the course of the year, we worked with the class on understanding how being the bad guy makes kids feel and how we could all work as a team. We used social stories, role played, and offered substitute ideas during play times. One day as the group played in the yard, we heard the telltale signs of superheroes - the swooshing of lightsabers and zooming of rocket ships. But we also heard something new. One student turned to the other and said, “Let’s make the soccer balls the bad guys!” The peer replied, “Yes! Then we can be on the same team!” The group played beautifully for the rest of the day and took on the Evil Soccer Ball team as a group. The empathy, creativity, and growth that the class displayed was a reminder that Parkside students themselves are the true superheroes.

Processing Shared Experiences Class 3-4

“

This year, several of the students in our class experienced losses on a profound level. For one it was the death of a dear family member, another the death of a beloved pet, and still others the death of close neighbors or friends.

These types of losses can be immensely tough for anyone to handle, but children especially are often experiencing death for the first time and are not sure what to feel or say. It was truly special to see the students connect with each other over these shared experiences and bond through the mutual grief they were feeling. We were so proud that they felt comfortable enough in the classroom to share their feelings and talk about these events with their peers.

It was also incredible to witness how some students processed and dealt with their losses by reaching out to teachers and therapists for the support they needed. Parkside’s therapeutic and nurturing environment allows students the space to seek out help and support when they need it the most. While it was a hard year for these children in our class, the connections these unfortunate losses triggered were beautiful to see. The students truly grew emotionally and socially through sharing and talking about these experiences together. We will forever be in awe of their maturity and grace through such difficult moments in their young lives.

Throughout the year, students in 3-3 learned about different states in the United States. One state in particular that students enjoyed learning about was Alaska, with a focus on the Anchorage city. Students learned what daily life, the weather, and local transportation are like in Anchorage. Students enjoyed comparing life in Anchorage, Alaska to life in New York City. Additionally, students learned about various Alaskan animals and the special adaptations that help them live in such a cold habitat. After completing our study on Alaska, students had the opportunity to work in groups to create dioramas showing an ocean, forest or tundra habitat. They had to use their knowledge of the elements of the various habitats and work together to decide which materials they would use to represent each of the features. Students also created their own animals using model magic in art class. We were so proud of how they were able to communicate their ideas and work collaboratively to create their dioramas. It was wonderful to see students listening to their classmates’ ideas and coming up with a plan together. It was especially rewarding to listen to them problem solve together when difficult situations came up. At the end of the project all the students had an opportunity to present to other classes and showcase their diorama as well as share their newly learned knowledge. We are so proud of all of their hard work!

Class 3-3 Alaska Dioramas

During gym this year, our workout of the week was reintroduced in September, practiced, and utilized as a warm-up every day before gym.

We spent between two and seven minutes participating in a fitness challenge, modified specifically for each group, which incorporated movements like push ups, planks, sprints, squats, burpees, sit ups, jumping rope, kettle bell walks and medicine ball slams. Some students felt reluctant to participate and weren’t always excited about our routines. One student in particular had mixed feelings, but would participate and move through the exercises. After a few weeks, he would tell me that he ran a 5K with his parents or “worked out” with his dad over the weekend. I asked him how it made him feel, and he responded, “Great! I feel like I’m getting stronger.” He was starting to feel the personal benefits of physical activity and enjoying exercise. Soon, this student wanted to demonstrate movements for our workout of the week, lead the routine and explain the function of each movement. What a wonderful turnaround from a boy who was just going through the motions, to a boy who enjoys exercising and being active with his family. This is a perfect example of how important parent engagement and participation is, and how much of a positive effect it has on a child. Keep moving!

Gym I’m Getting Stronger

Honolulu Models Class 4-2

“

As a part of the 4-2 curriculum we learn about various cities the United States. This year students learned all about San Francisco, Honolulu and Chicago. Students loved being able to compare and contrast all the different cities to one another, as well as to New York City. One of the highlights of our city study was having students work in pairs to create their own models of Honolulu by transforming recyclable materials into volcanoes, buildings, trains, beaches and more. The children worked so hard collaborating and creating their project, and then presented their model to each class in the school. When presenting their projects, students shared content they learned from the unit, and answered questions asked by their peers. As their teachers we are so proud of all the dedication and teamwork that each group contributed to create their Honolulu model.

A Hands-On Approach Occupational Therapy

“

One of the biggest challenges that many of our students face is handwriting, for a variety of reasons. As one could imagine, handwriting is usually one of the least popular activities to do in the OT room, as our students would much prefer to spend their appointments creating elaborate obstacle courses with swinging, climbing, and jumping. Since handwriting requires so many different skills, the task can be arduous and difficult for many. Some of our students not only dislike handwriting, but are fearful and aversive to it. One of our greatest handwriting success stories this year involved a student who worked hard to overcome her strong fear of handwriting. This student started at Parkside with very little knowledge of letters — what they

look like, what each one is called, and the sound each one makes.

Beginning in September, her goal was to successfully write her name, which proved to be extremely difficult for her. At first, she wrote her name with almost every letter reversed or flipped.

She found handwriting and the task of letter formation to be so challenging that she would refuse to do any type of writing activity. She would try to avoid it by running away from the table when she saw a paper and pencil, sitting outside the OT room and refusing to come in, or crying when she eventually had to do writing.

For weeks, her goal was to come in and practice handwriting for five minutes, without having a big reaction. We used motivating tools to help boost her confidence and set

her up for success. We first used a multisensory approach with wooden blocks, clay, putty, wiki stix, and beads to practice building the letters in her name. She was able to practice making her name through a more hands-on approach where she could be successful while also having fun.

She also began playing a variety of interactive games to practice identifying, sounding out, and forming letters, all of which were specifically adapted to provide her with the “just-right” challenge. Throughout the year, she was given tons of positive praise not just for showing quality work, but also for trying her best and persevering through difficult tasks. Reflecting back on her work and allowing her to recognize her growth and achievements were also integral

for helping her overcome her fear of writing. Today, she is able to identify nearly all letters of the alphabet by their names and sounds! She is also able to pull together various strategies learned in the classroom, reading group, and speech and OT appointments to form all uppercase letters and even determine their sounds to spell words. Most importantly, she is able to tackle all handwriting practice with confidence and ease, and even loves to show off her hard work!

One of our most noteworthy projects in 4-1 this year was our “flexibility book.”

The idea for the project was developed during a team meeting involving specialists and classroom teachers who worked collaboratively to carry it out. Our newest student often had difficulty “being flexible.” As a team, we realized that the term “being flexible” is often used at Parkside but as a new student, this particular child didn’t have the same level of exposure to or understanding of the term as her peers. We identified moments that were often tricky for her to “be flexible” throughout the day, like not getting the game of her choosing, compromising with a peer, or unexpected changes in her schedule. Our next step was to provide the student with explicit instruction on the term flexibility during speech appointments.

Next, the book was crafted as a social story, with text describing what being flexible and not being flexible looks and feels like. She was incredibly excited to have a book of her own, and was highly motivated to display moments of flexibility, adding pictures to illustrate the text descriptions in her book. Even now, we will often see the child pull out this book from her desk to look through it. She is quite proud of her book, and uses it as a resource for support as she continues to work on being flexible.

Bake Sale for Puerto Rico Class 4-3

“

Our 4-3 community can be described in many words. Three we choose are: extraordinary, thoughtful, and compassionate. All of these traits came out this year in 4-3 as we organized our first form of charity work. After reading an article about the hurricanes that occurred in Puerto Rico last year, 4-3 sprang into action. They were deeply concerned about how families were left with no homes, little food and lack of electricity. As a class, students worked together to decide the best way to raise money and help. After some debate, the group decided to put together and host a charity bake sale. The students worked in small teams to organize the whole event. We had students working as “accountants” who made lists of the ingredients we needed and found stores in NYC to work within our budget. They also came up with a goal to raise $200 for us to work towards. We had an advertising group who brainstormed ways to promote the bake sale throughout the school. Lastly, a writer’s crew took up the responsibility of writing two separate emails: one sent to Parkside families, and one sent to the Parkside staff. Working collaboratively, the students pulled off a phenomenal bake sale, more than doubling the original goal and raising $461 to help families in Puerto Rico! The care, thought, and hard work that went into the bake sale truly demonstrated the optimism and love of our 4-3 family.

The Parkside School integrates multimedia technology into every facet of our program. We aim to provide teachers and students with the tools necessary to facilitate instruction, learning and exploration.

We use technology to meet children where they are, using their strengths to engage with technology in order to overcome their learning challenges.

The Universal Design for Learning framework guides our use of technology, providing a flexible learning environment that can accommodate a variety of students with individual learning differences.

This framework allows us to plan and execute lessons and projects that are individualized and interdisciplinary and teach to the whole child, which is a pillar of the mission of our school.

Authentically Digital Technology

This framework was brought to light this year in the computer lab when students were tasked with creating a digital travel brochure about a city they had studied in social studies. While the final product would be the same for each student, the steps each child took to get there were different and varied, as they were able to choose the tools they felt most comfortable with based on their own strengths and learning challenges. After engaging in a group brainstorm on the city using an interactive word web, students planned their project using Google Docs. Features such as speech-to-text and predictive text were available if students wanted to use these tools, and some students even chose to use pencil and paper (low-tech tools) to plan their brochure. Students then moved to Google Slides to create their brochure, with some students choosing to use a desktop computer and others an iPad, based on their comfort level with each tool. Providing autonomy with the creation of these projects allowed students to think about what tools worked for them. Over the course of the year, many students developed a better understanding of themselves as learners, and of what does and doesn’t work for them in terms of technology use. Overall, this led to more authentic digital creations and a group of students who were better able to advocate for themselves in and out of the classroom.

“Yoga Is Like Therapy” Yoga

“

At the end of the school year I asked the students to write about how yoga helped them throughout the year.

One student wrote that he is no longer nervous to take tests because he would practice the breathing techniques we learned in class and it helped him calm his body and mind. He also added that final relaxation is “amazing!” Another child wrote, “yoga is like therapy.” She went on to say that it helped her feel less stressed and she now practices yoga at home as well. I couldn’t be happier with all the students’ progress this year. They were really able to take what they learned in the class and apply it to everyday life. Way to go Parkside yogis!

Professional Reflection Social Work

“

Social Workers at Parkside continually strive to maximize each child’s strengths and potential. Building on the foundation of trusting, therapeutic relationships, children are helped over time to develop their capacities for communication through language and play, and for self-awareness, sometimes called reflective functioning.

Out of these abilities emerge growth in self-regulation and confidence, empathy, resilience, problem-solving and emotional stamina.

In order to help children to learn to reflect, it is necessary for therapists to be able to reflect as well. The clinician has to be able to pause, step back, honestly assess what works and what doesn’t, and understand how are we affecting and being affected by what’s happening in the therapeutic relationship. Such reflection is both essential and extremely difficult to achieve in the hectic crush of day-today schedules and deadlines. While weekly individual and group supervision sessions fulfill some of these needs, we recognized that we needed more.

We applied to the Anna Freud Foundation for a grant that would provide support for us to attend 16

conferences and consult with experts in the field of child development and therapy. In our proposal, we cited some interests which we hoped to explore.

They included learning more about new research in the neurobiology of children with language-based learning difficulties. In particular, we were interested in how brain development shapes defenses which affect social/ emotional growth. We wanted to learn about studies which show that therapeutic relating and playing can interrupt and beneficially shift those processes, even modulating what used to be thought of as “hard-wired.” We also wrote of our interest in becoming more informed and skilled as therapists working with many dimensions of trauma—for the child, family and the school community.

Our proposal was accepted by the Foundation. In February, we received news that we had been awarded $2,000 to support the work outlined in our proposal, and we began the process of identifying consultants to work with us over the summer.

Our 4-4 class rose to the occasion during this year’s Science design challenge!

Each student was responsible for creating their own 3-D model of Earth that showcased the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core using everyday objects.

Students had to ensure that their model abided by specific properties such as having a thin crust and a thick mantle. Each child was creative and thoughtful throughout the planning and building stages. They truly crafted beautiful and creative models.

Music, Rhythm and Memory Music & Drama

“

The Music and Drama room is a place where children learn how to express themselves freely, and over the year we experienced many successes, both onstage and in the classroom. The collaborative effort between departments is the real key to successful expression, and the children continue to delight and surprise us with their capabilities.

This year we were thrilled that our youngest students were able to memorize and perform complicated pieces in a performance setting twice: the first being ‘The Parade of the Wooden Soldier,’ and the second being ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

We’ve found that with visual aids, the attachment of a tune to words, and repetitive movements, our youngest students are able to exceed expectations of memory and word

retrieval, and improve their ability to sustain their attention in a performance setting. To perform both pieces with tricky words and simultaneous choreographed movements in a distracting setting – on stage in front of a large audience, in a room with large windows that result in background noise – was an impressive feat. From their ability to memorize all the lyrics to knowing exactly where and when the drums come in, the children’s performances highlighted the correlation between music, rhythm and memory. It was a joy to watch them work together as a group to learn these pieces with such enthusiasm! They came to class with intention and purpose and the result was amazing.

This year, our class studied The American Revolution. We began this unit with a review of explorers and the reasons why people left their homes in England in hopes of a better life in “The New World.” Through a series of group lessons and activities, students began to understand that life in the 13 colonies was not exactly as wonderful as the colonists expected it to be. Colonists were forced to pay a variety of taxes and had no say in their own government. These concepts are important, but also quite abstract. Students in 5-4 put their acting skills to use to explore these concepts in a deeper and more meaningful way.

One activity involved role-playing at a “general store.” Students took turns acting as a shocked colonist learning about new taxes and also as a saddened, but firm store owner who had to be the bearer of bad news. Students also created their very own “No Taxation without Representation” posters and passionately marched around the school protesting. Towards the end of our unit, we took a trip to the Fraunces Tavern Museum downtown to solidify all of this learning. By the time we learned about the colonists’ revolt at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the students had steam coming out of their ears! It was an exciting journey exploring the big battles and important people of the Revolutionary War, as well as important documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the ultimate Patriot victory at The Battle of Yorktown. July 4th will never be the same for 5-4 students!

Class 5-4 A New World

In the library, children were greeted from the very beginning of the year with a message many of us are familiar with from Fred Rogers: “You are a very special person. There is only one like you in the whole world. There’s never been anyone exactly like you before, and there will never be again. Only you. And people can like you exactly as you are.” This message was reinforced throughout the year in our visiting authors program. Students excitedly welcomed childrens’ authors Rosemary Wells and Jacqueline Woodson to Parkside to share their inspirational stories.

In anticipation of Ms. Woodson’s visit, students read Brown Girl Dreaming, and prepared questions they intended to ask when she visited in April. The Parkside Singers welcomed her with a moving rendition of “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman, and students eagerly listened to her described what inspired her to begin writing, despite her childhood challenges with reading. When Ms. Wells visitied, she captivated her audience by showing examples of her writing and illustration process, which prompted a range of questions from the students.

Her message to the children was that mistakes, coupled with perseverance, is what it takes to reach your own personal excellence.

The opportunity to connect with these published authors was often a turning point for students. Some children were inspired to try their hand at writing or illustrating their own books, while others were motivated to practice reading more often, or to read a book they may not have otherwise chosen. These steps towards the creation of more curious, determined readers is what really stood out in the library this year.

A Little Extra Support Art

“

As the new art teacher I had many wonderful experiences this year, from meeting such incredible, creative and talented students to working as part of a team with both students and staff to support the school play in the spring.

Looking back over the year, one thing I will always remember is working with my art assistants. Three students in their last year at Parkside worked during one art class per week with one of our three youngest classes. They had all kinds of responsibilities. From helping with collecting and passing out supplies, to turning on the water for hand washing and helping the younger students take turns, to working with one or two students who benefited from a little extra support, the art assistants were impressive in their ability to talk about art with their young peers. It was wonderful to see their ability to jump in and be flexible in many different situations.

One day I had the opportunity to spend a few extra minutes with one of the art assistants after we dismissed the younger class and waited for his class to join us for art. I will always remember how thoughtful and reflective he was. He talked about what went well during the previous class, what he would like to try next time, and asked lots of questions. I was so impressed with his growth this year and feel fortunate for this opportunity to see what wonderful potential he has.

The Great Plastic Debate Class 5-2

“

Class 5-2 had a very busy and productive year. All the students were members of Parkside’s first-ever debate. After hearing about the possibility that plastic utensils might be banned in school, the graduating class had some big feelings on the topic. With the support of the class speech therapists and the class teachers a debate was born. We have never seen the students more motivated and focused on a single issue. They were ready for this challenge and never looked back.

During the three months of preparation the students never complained and persevered until the end. It was refreshing to see them cooperating, planning, organizing, reading, writing and editing as teams. Each member had a part in the team, and each team functioned as a working machine. Unexpected partnerships emerged and friendships grew stronger. The debaters become better listeners, stronger speakers and future citizens who care about the world.

Many of the participants continued discussing the debate issue days after the event. We think some future debaters and activists were born this Spring 2019.

This year, all five of our Speech Language Pathologists worked wholeheartedly to support each of our student’s language, developmental, social and academic skills. While there were many significant success stories from this year — the 5-2 debate, expanded use of the Story Grammar Marker for narrative language, the creation of kindness cards, and even the creation of props for the play — one student experience stood out.

Our therapists work diligently to target specific speech and language goals within the context of the school setting. Students have opportunities to practice their communication objectives with familiar and unfamiliar listeners, adults or peers, and in a variety of school-based settings.

Carrying these skills over to a different environment beyond the school setting is an important step in supporting our students to develop independence outside the therapy room. At times, therapy data or clinical impressions have led clinicians to understand times when a child may communicate with greater ease or success in the therapy setting than in

other contexts. Thus, this year, one of our therapists worked closely with a particular student to target their speech and language skills in the community. Together, they spent time planning different locations they might visit and goals they might work on. Initially, the student might only be responsible for waiting in line, with the ultimate goal of using language to order from unfamiliar individuals. Over the course of this project, the Speech Language Pathologist observed the student becoming more independent outside of school and confident to take risks in their own communication.

At the Achievement Ceremony at the end of the year, this particular student described the importance of these trips and this special time with their therapist.

This wonderful story highlights how our Speech Language Pathologists carefully and systematically support our students in all aspects of their communication. Their valuable work reaches far beyond the therapy setting and touches the lives of our students here at Parkside.

Graduation and Ongoing Schools The Class of 2019 celebrated their graduation from Parkside with moving speeches which included candid remembrances of their struggles, shout-outs to friends and teachers who impacted their education, and a great deal of pride in the accomplishments that have prepared them to move on to middle school.

Alumnus Andrew Isaacson ’11 gave a heartfelt and deliberate keynote address at the ceremony. It was the perfect summation of how Parkside prepares students to take challenges head on, to advocate for themselves, and to believe in their future.

Graduates are going on to schools including The Community School, The Lowell School, The Summit School, and Winston Preparatory School.

After I graduated in 2011, I attended the Gateway Middle School for three years, another special educational environment. I then made the massive transition to a mainstream high school, York Prep and have just completed my first year of college at Lehigh University. I am studying Journalism and Political Science with a potential minor in marketing.

In addition to all the academic success, I am an editor for the school newspaper and the community service chair for my Fraternity.

The drastic educational growth is a testament to my academic perseverance and commitment, plus the way Parkside set me up for a successful future.

They helped turn my biggest weaknesses into my biggest strengths and made me an independent selfadvocate. Some of those skills have been asking for extensions when necessary, starting a paper or project days or weeks in advance of the deadline rather than waiting unitl the last minute, and reviewing for a test or assignment.

What makes Parkside special is that the teachers and therapists give each student the confidence that they can go far in life and succeed at any educational level no matter what challenges they have. They are willing to support any child, no matter their background, and make them prepared to succeed post-elementary school.

Parents Association

Message from the Parents Association The Parkside Parents Association (PA) is led by a committee of dedicated parent volunteers and has three main objectives: to create an engaged, active and social parent community; to support the school fundraising efforts; and to show appreciation for the teachers and staff.

In order to meet our goals, we have various activities that take place over the course of the school year. This year, we kept many of the events that our Parkside community knows and loves, and added some new ones.

In 2017, we successfully launched our Parkside Family Photo Book, and our second edition was equally loved by parents and students. We welcomed new families at our New Parent Cocktail Party hosted by Will Whitesell and Felicia La Forgia. Our Annual Holiday Party continued to be fun for the whole family. With magic, jewelry-making, face-painting, and a photo booth, good times were had by all. And many parents and friends joined together for a great workout that raised a lot of money for the school at Swerve for Parkside, organized again by Katie Holliday. Moms and Dads also had a blast bowling and painting during Mom’s Night Out and Dad’s Night Out events organized by the PA. Some events were familiar to the Parkside Community, but went through major changes this year. For our annual Book Fair, we partnered with Books of Wonder for the first time. We had a very successful day at their store, raising money for Parkside and filling our library with many great new additions. Our “Casino Royale” Spring Benefit was held at Rumi with Las Vegasstyle casino games, a silent auction, raffle prizes, dinner, and dancing. This event raised $126,556 towards Parkside’s Arts and Movement programs!

New events were added, which will surely become traditions at Parkside: Our first Parkside Parent-Child Dance was a sold-out event that the children loved! We screened “Sing!” at our Movie Night PJ party, where we sang along and munched on popcorn. We held our first annual Valentine’s kiss-o-gram and bake sale, which resulted in happy kids with wonderful handmade treats and personalized keepsakes to give to their friends, families, and favorite staffers. Finally, we had many families join us for Parkside at the Yankees, where the Yankees showed up for us and beat the Rays 13-5!

The PA also supports Parkside ‘behind the scenes,’ with events like our Teacher Appreciation Party, which this year had a ‘70s theme and included food, drinks, much-needed massages, and raffle prizes; Treats for Teachers, which provides snacks for staff meetings; Library Volunteers, who organize and reshelf books, to help keep our library running; and Staff Gifts, providing holiday and year-end presents to the support staff at the school.

In addition to attending our events, parents at Parkside get involved in a variety of ways, including being class parents, and leading or volunteering for our many fundraising and community events. We are so proud to say that aside from this year’s largest fundraiser —our Spring Benefit—our smaller events went on to raise almost $15,000 for Parkside, giving us a grand total of over $141,000 raised for the school.

Our busy calendar of PA events would not be possible without the commitment of our parent community. So thank you very much for all that you have done this year to help put the fun in fundraising!
