Canine Connections BY CAROL CLUPNEY AND JANE MILLER From Carol Clupney in Hermiston A beautiful 67 lb. yellow Labrador Retriever has come to work for me. I pay him with kibble and praise. When he wears his service coat, I am bombarded with questions. Why do you need a service dog? What does he do for you? What is his name?

(Jane, Angus, Carol, and Leroy at Graduation!) Joys of Living Assistance Dogs (JLAD) has been on our radar for more than a decade as we watched in marvel how one of our PRO community worked so smoothly with his dog. Not only was Jack a beautiful animal, he was an integral part of our friend’s life – indispensable for many of the routine activities that Parkinson’s disease can disrupt.

Since that time, service dogs for Parkinson’s have become a bit more common, but no less remarkable, in their commitment to service of their handler. We invited two members of the PRO community, Jane and Carol to share about their recent experiences with JLAD and their new teammates!

Because of the Americans with Disabilities Act, I am not required to reveal my disability. I will tell people my dog is specially trained to assist me with many activities of daily living. Yesterday he pushed the button to open the wheelchair-accessible door, transferred clothes from the floor into a basket, took clean clothes out of the dryer, pulled off my socks, and assisted in removing my jacket.
