the brief The aim of this unit is for students to develop creative thinking processes through generating and testing speculative design propositions that respond to a range of complex, contemporary global challenges at an introductory level.

Students will develop agile, nonlinear learning abilities to respond to uncertain outcomes and to make meaningful connections between challenging, contradictory or unlikely elements. Students will learn to take risks and learn from failure through design iteration whilst undertaking design as a form of research at an introductory level. Students will be able to identify a design challenge; set out an integrated design research question; articulate a design method; and put forward a tested design proposition, drawing conclusions about the weakness and strengths of their design approach.

assignment_1 Part 1: Metabolic processes of speculative Agro-urban Urban agriculture encompasses a variety of production systems, ranging from subsistence production and processing at household level through to fully commercialized architecture or bio-digital agriculture.

Within Part 1 ‘Metabolic processes’ each group is to research existing systems of urban agricultural production, both existing and speculative, and to show insight into the complexities of the industry.

Through your research you will investigate some of the following: 1/ Viable food offerings: What have been the issues affecting the commercialisation of vertical urban farms locally? What sustainable initiatives existing around urban farming within (dry) climates similar to Melbourne? How much (perishable) food does a person consume in a year (cite references)?

What initiatives have people tried around urban agriculture and how have these worked or failed? How much food do we waste each year, what is it and what else could it be used for?

How can the urban population connect better with food production and food systems (for example Vancouver adopted an Urban Agriculture Policy in 2015 to encourage edible food growing in public parks and spaces). What are current food and technology trends and predictions and how might these affect urban environments? Are there any indigenous agricultural technologies to draw inspiration from?

2/ Urban greening Strategies: research and analyze city wide strategies (locally and globally) that have been undertaken using greening and ecological strategies to mitigate heat island/ water quality/ walkable streets/ waste/ to help clear air through ecology (both small and big scale). Some areas of interest include Taiwan, Holland, Slovenia, New York, Detroit, Singapore.

3/ Bio-Digital: research skins and systems that contribute to bio-ecological health of systems. What has happened since Ken Yeang first started greening towers? What are the opportunities for systematic skins/ bio-facades/ bio-digital aspects of buildings?

our research process I was assigned with looking into viable food offerings. This includes recycling food waste, sustainable production methods and researching precedents for sustainable food practices.

our research process My team included Emma Hall and Bella Lord. We decided that a good way to look at viable food offerings was looking at the journey of a meat pie from production and harvesting of ingredients, to production of the meat pie, delivery to the Marvel stadium, consumption, and waste. This was a good way to look at the whole food process as a system.

assignment_2 02: Making Places: Situational understandings - due Monday 23rd March This is a part group, part individual project. You will investigate the latent and expressive site conditions of our ‘Edge of Bounty’ precinct and produce a:consolidated situational map of the site focused on ONE of the items below that you will deeply investigate, consider and analyse mAND a short 20 second video OR collage/ collection of images of your impressions and take-away of the site AND each student will also produce their own drawn map (analogue, that is) in the spirit of artist Nigel Peake Group work Analyse: By hand/ by desktop/ by site visits and observations. Presented (10 min) on 2 x A1 ( a min of 1) + video/ collage 1/ Environmental factors - predominant wind (climate, time of year, effect on space), rainfall and sun studies (solar aspect to site, any information on daylight saturation of site, orientation, sun path). Shadow studies of existing buildings around the perimeter. Also Water ecologies and topographies: Existing stormwater behaviour, character of Moonee ponds creek Nature physical features, geography/ topography, tree & green character.

2/ Singular Mobility - where are walking to and from? What landmarks/ destinations attract people? Bike paths and connectivity. Ease of connectivity from pedestrian routes (ie on a bridge can you see what’s beyond, are landmarks easily visible, is it easy to establish cognitive understandings of a site). Current time it takes to walk from Southern Cross station to the most northern aspect of the site, or from North Melbourne Station to Central Pier of the Hoyts Cinema.. Observations of human behavior - are there any spaces around Southern Cross/ Docklands/ beyond this precinct where people linger/ express recreational activities.

3/ Infrastructure & mass Mobility - freight (car and rail) and mass transport (car and rail/ public transport). Existing Carpark’s, traffic patterns, street car parking design, drop off and pick up locations. Identify all roads, laneways, within 100m away. Also ferry routes/ terminals. Investigate the west gate tunnel infrastructure plan that runs through our site - what does this mean for our site?

4/ Programme, zoning and amenity. Overlays, height limits, Source information on the planning scheme plans and zones of the greater area, scale of existing buildings, key facilities. create a figure ground map and other 3d/ 2d studies. Research & communicate what the existing amenities are around the area, as well as those that are on the drawing board.

what is e-gate?

• Heritage buildings and sites are to be retained

The E-Gate is part of a rail corridor connecting North Melbourne Station to Southern Cross Station. E-Gate itself is an approximately 20 hectare site, predominantly consisting of freight rail and rail service.

water urbanism and its issues: The western side of the E-Gate in Melbourne’s CBD is highly prone to flooding due to rising sea levels, and the reduced level of the topography. The E-Gate has been in the works for an upgrade for many years now, seen to be the missing puzzle piece in Melbourne’s CBD.

the division factor: It unfortunately currently creates a large divide between West Melbourne and the Docklands, making pedestrians have to travel excessive distances to reach either side.

environmental considerations: The sun, rain and notorious wind of the site all pose issues, however can also be seen as areas for opportunity. The E-Gate in its redevelopment also needs to consider the noise and air pollution produced currently by surrounding rail and the rail fly over.

congestion and rail: Congestion is also an issue around this site, with Footscray Road, Dudley Street, Spencer street all posing issues. Trucks carrying freight across this site are also a concern, as they cause congestion and air pollution to an already busy area.

community engagement, zones and ammenity: In its redevelopment, one must also take into high consideration the need for community engagement, connection to water, connection to ammenity, multi-use developments, density, residential developments, heritage and commercial developments. Currently, North Melbourne Station is also very underutilised, with Southern Cross Station being almost filled to capacity daily.

reflection This project allowed us to dig deep into the realm of speculative design research and situational understandings.

Not only were we required to design architectural and urban interventions for the e-gate site, but we were also required to think of the entire design intervention as a system, learning about the core fundamentals of systems thinking and closed-loop solutions. The combinations of group based research and individual iterative design processes ensured a simultaneous process of gathering large bodies of data, whilst applying these to our finer grain individual analyses and design interventions. This unit aloowed me to become more comfortable and confident with approaching larger sites, and looking at how you can create design solutions at a systems scale, urban scale, architectural scale, interior design scale and product/industrial scale. After having completed this project, I cannot stop thinking about all the other ideas and interventions I could continue to test within the site, as well as how excited I am for the next couple of design research studios, within which I can implement my key learnings and insights from this unit.

Thanks to the wonderful, organised and supportive teaching team and course directors, this unit was highly successful and so valuable to my development as an urban designer. It felt great to get more experience with the urban design/planning side of things; super exciting. The guest lectures were also incredibly insightful and inspiring.
