Drive with caution, as schools are on summer break for the next two months, and I don’t think children feel the heat like we grownups do.

Those that are not in summer camp may be skateboarding to the beach, playing in the street, or riding their bikes. They are unpredictable.

Please practice safety on the water too. Last month we ran a column on page 7 from the Desk of our Sheriff with a checklist for boating safety.

At the top of the list was to enroll in a safe boating course. In the quite comprehensive arts and leisure listings that run from page 41 - 55 in each edition of Paradise NEWS, there is a category called ‘ON THE WATER’ on Page 48-49 which includes contacts for several local safe boating courses. They are inexpensive, to the point, thorough and far better than YouTube. Please check them out.

June is the time for the Tampa BayWatch Tarpon Rodeo, a lot of fun for fish people, celebrating the annual return of these majestic creatures.

Not considered edible, Tarpon have long been fished just for sport.

While we hate to bring up the point, June is also the official start of hurricane season. Irma was for most of us just a warning, a reminder that preparations are wise. Having a plan is essential.

This issue we offer our hurricane preparedness update by Steve Traiman in the hopes you won’t be the person at the end of a long line at a local big box store, negotiating a float full of plywood or worse. We also have a report by our new freelance writer, Bonnie Quick, with accolades for some local governments on their handling of the cleanup after Irma blew through.

There is a primary election August 28 for candidates wishing to replace veteran John Moroni on the Pinellas County Commission.

Meanwhile, we mourn John’s passing as we just learned he lost his 4th battle against cancer, a struggle he was thrilled about winning thrice before. Pete moved from Canada after high school (almost 50 years ago now) as soon as he found out there was somewhere it didn’t snow. Renee and he met at St. Pete Junior College and married quite young. August 15th will mark 47 years together.

We try our best to include all of the events in the current issue that we know will happen before the next issue gets delivered space permitting, so hang onto the May issue until June/July arrives.

We try to pack 6 weeks of events into the monthly and 10 weeks

into the bimonthly summer issues to create an overlap. If there is not enough room to list all of the events coming early in the following month, we give priority to items that are not covered elsewhere in the issue, such as in the Arts and Leisure listings.

The new issue is online at www.paradisenewsfl.com quite early each month. Access is free.

You can even subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter that comes out every Thursday giving you the top 5 things to do this weekend.

Hit the newsletter tab to see last Thursday’s and to subscribe (also free of charge).

We send files to the printer at that time. If we send it much sooner, it gets bogged down with all of the others that want to be out on the first, and takes twice as long.

When we go in on the first or second they turn us around in just a few days. Then, the post office takes a week to deliver on “Island Time.”

We start to fill 550 racks and stacks up and down the beaches and on the mainland on the 6th or 7th most months.

The St. Pete Beach post office is one of the first places to get new copies, since we are there almost everyday.

Powerboat P1 offshore powerboat race returns behind the pci resort on St. pete beach on the weekend of June 15 - 16 from 10-3pm. This contest includes some of the finest racers of both personal watercraft and the big powerful offshore racers.

St. Pete Beach Robotics Camp teaches students to build and program fully autonomous robots using the EV3 Lego mindstorm’s kit. The student-build robots will then compete in competitions such as Sumo-bot wrestling, robo-parade and exhibitions. robotics specialty camp at St. pete beach recreation has 3 separate sessions: June 4 - 8, June 18 - 22 and July 9 - 13.

TIDBITS change may soon come to the long-neglected beach theatre building on corey ave. Screenwriter micheal france bought the theatre in 2007 “to save it” and operated it until 2012. mike’s exwife and sister fought over it in court since mike’s surprise passing in april 2013 at age 51.

The lawsuit has finally settled, and the theatre will be sold and proceeds divided. The lawyer involved in the suit says there’s been plenty of interest. “if i had a dollar for each inquiry i’ve had while the suit was pending i could have retired”, he reportedly told commissioner Terri finnerty.

John Loder, Sr. is another beach personality who has left this world too soon. his father William “bill” Loder, the founder of crabby bill’s, had only been gone a month when John recently passed at age 51.

John had tried his hand at real estate development before returning to his roots, operating captain bill’s kitchen in “downtown” Treasure island for the past couple of years.

Soothe Our Souls (SOS) is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit volunteer organization providing free of charge sailing trips on the first Sunday of every month to provide a healing environment for those in our communities that are facing serious health challenges. captain dan, of Dolphin Landings Charter Boat Center, founded SoS in 2012 following the passing of a dear friend and fellow sailor of 40 years. in the weeks before his passing, on Sunday mornings, dan would take his friend and family, along with some of their friends on sailing trips. The time together was precious and therapeutic. it didn’t take long to see that the peaceful setting further improved the mental and emotional well being of all involved. it was from those wonderful experiences, and in honor of dan’s friend, that SoS was created. making memories since 1972, dolphin Landings charter boat center wants those facing serious health challenges to be able to benefit from time on the

city council members recently authorized Mayor rick kriseman to sign a five-year lease with our favorite nonprofit organization, Tampa Bay Watch, which is dedicated to the restoration and protection of the Tampa bay waters through scientific and educational programs.

Since 1993 Tampa bay Watch and thousands of volunteers have performed a variety of habitat restoration and protection activities each year to help Tampa bay recover from its environmental problems.

Last fall the group submitted a proposal to the city to lease, operate, and manage the education center, which would 10

Owning A Business

by Samantha Chechele, MBA I want to own my own business – great news! Where do I start? That is a question that frequently walks through my door along with a hopeful and wide‐eyed individual, who is anticipating getting wealthy beyond their wildest dreams through business ownership. While this sometimes occurs, the truth is that business ownership can be very rewarding, but also very full of pitfalls and hazards, if you don’t know the logistics of operating a business.

Fortunately, we assist business start‐ups as well as existing businesses every day, tackling many important topics of the logistics of owning a business. Here are a few of our most important tips.

Entity Selection ... Should I be a corporation, a limited liability company, or‐‐do I even need to have a company? The general answer is that most businesses need to have an “entity”, or a formalized type of business organization. What type is best for each business depends upon many factors, but generally for a “for‐profit” organization, an LLC is now the preferred entity type, and for a “not‐for‐profit charity”, a corporation is the preferred entity type. As with most types of legal work, this is not really a do‐it‐yourself project, because most people don’t know the right features, language, and next steps to do this properly, so please do use an attorney to set up your entity, (even though it is possible to do this yourself on sunbiz).

Tax Elections ... I didn’t know I needed to make a tax election……many individuals who set up an entity themselves don’t know they must make a tax election in a timely manner. A tax election means filing forms with the Internal Revenue Service that select how you will be treated for tax purposes for the rest of your business life. If you don’t make an election, the IRS will pick one for you, and it is probably not the one you should have (and will cost you big $$$$ if you choose incorrectly or fail to choose). Please consult a professional in this area, and don’t forget that there is a short deadline for making a tax election after setting up an entity.

Other Necessities ... Obtain an EIN, TIN, FEIN, whatever you want to call it….this is a federal identification number that will be associated with your business FOREVER. It is used to open a bank account, make a tax

election, and use for many other purposes. If you aren’t sure about how to do this, don’t attempt by yourself, AGAIN – consult the right professional.

Bookkeeping – every business must keep a set of books. This is for two purposes – First and foremost, so that you are aware of the income, expenses, profit, receivables, payables and all the financial aspects of your business at any given moment. Second – so that you can prepare a complete and accurate tax return at year end, and maximize tax savings opportunities. We recommend that clients confer with us about what is the proper bookkeeping software to utilize and what version of popular accounting software works best for each type of business and level of expertise.

Insurance‐ every business needs insurance – so don’t forget to contact your property and casualty insurance provider to see what types of insurance will be needed for your business. You do not want to subject yourself to unnecessary risk by failing to have the proper types of insurance. For some professions, it is illegal not to be properly insured, so do not skip this important step. So, What’s Really In that Listing Contract?

Many people hire attorneys to review both listing contracts and purchase and sale agreements before they sign them (and often prefer to have attorneys close the transaction as well). Other people seem perfectly comfortable signing these multi-page documents without even reading them through themselves. They are often told they are “standard” agreements, and seem to assume that they are therefore “safe.”

For our part, we real estate lawyers warn that many problems can’t be fully remedied after the agreements have been executed.

So, just what is in listing agreements that can come back and hurt the owner?

First of all, a listing is the agreement between a property owner and a real estate broker by which that firm is engaged to give their best efforts to find a buyer ready, willing and able to purchase a property on the terms offered (or other terms the seller may ultimately accept).

Listing contracts also determine some of the marketing choices which the seller may care about, such as to whether or not to use a lockbox, or allowing other brokers to feature your home on their (or other third-party websites) that may allow people to comment on your property, or use apps to calculate the home’s value. These things should be carefully considered, and discussed with your attorney if you are unclear.

1. Many listings provide for binding arbitration in the case of a disagreement between you and your broker. The problem with arbitration is the concern that the arbitrator may favor the businesses that hire them. In addition, if you disagree with their ruling, there is no appeal.

2. Listing contracts often include language that would, under certain circumstances, leave you liable to a pay full commission even if there is no closing. Most sellers would never expect such an outcome, and I always strike that language.

3. In the event that the seller changes his mind about selling, or just doesn’t think the broker is doing an adequate job, there are often very tough conditions attached to cancellation, again a situation that most sellers would not expect.

4. Some listing agreements also provide that the broker can transfer the listing to another broker should they desire. It seems to me like they should ask you, the seller for permission if they want to do that.

To their credit, most real estate brokers work very hard to get your property sold, and are usually successful. But just as good fences make for good neighbors, good contracts make for good professional relationships.

he St petersburg city council members recently authorized Mayor Rick Kriseman sign a five-year lease with Tampa bay Watch, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of the Tampa bay waters through scientific and educational programs. Since 1993 Tampa Bay Watch and thousands of volunteers have performed a variety of habitat restoration and protection activities each year to help Tampa bay recover from its environmental problems.

Last September, the group submitted a proposal to the city to lease, operate, and manage the education center, which would include programs focused on marine and environmental education presented

to families and tourists during afternoon and evening sessions and summer camps. According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Irma, which hit the Caribbean before marching up Florida’s spine, killed 44 people and caused more than $50 billion in damage. For this year, researchers at Colorado State University predict 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes, packing sustained winds of at least 111 mph. A typical season sees 12 named storms, 6.5 hurricanes and two majors. The forecast comes from CSU research scientist and forecast lead author Phil Klotzbach.

Thankfully, Tampa bay did not take a direct hit from any hurricane in 2017, despite predictions to the contrary, but the aftermath of irma left the city of St. petersburg, Treasure island, and St. pete beach along with a large part of florida reeling under the thousands of tons of debris left by a long-lasting rogue hurricane. it was an unprecedented event. irma touched every county in florida and there were simply not enough workers or machines to complete the task of cleanup and restoration quickly. about 70% of power customers in pinellas county lost electricity, mostly due to downed power lines.

as the 2018 season approaches, municipalities are setting priorities and creating plans for post-disaster operations that include removal and disposal of debris to restore streets, drainage systems, utility systems and other structures and systems to full capacity, priority given to police, fire and utility repair vehicles and damage assessment teams.

priority is given to debris clearance in support of search and rescue operations. paths must be wide enough for the search and rescue teams to access heavily damaged areas. downed power line repair is coordinated closely, with Duke Energy focusing on hospitals, police and fire stations first.

debris clearance efforts must also be dedicated to opening access to other critical community facilities, such as wastewater treatment facilities, as they are also threats to public health and safety.

“We have to remember that each storm is different and we must treat them as such,” said amber boulding, manager of the office of Emergency management in the city of St. petersburg. “our plans are never static and we are continuously looking at the current conditions. We must remain creative and in constant communication.”

“St. petersburg mayor rick kriseman continually applauds his people for their ability to be nimble, creative and innovative in the face of all issues as the emergency management team looks to plans for the 2018 hurricane season,” stated ben kirby, communications director in the mayor’s office. “it’s a team that is able to think on their feet. Last hurricane season city teams made up of public Works, parks and recreation and Sanitation, and other cross-department personnel collected debris street by street.”

Set up a to-go box for critical papers: Use a plastic, waterproof container that can be used to hold and carry important business documents and helpful forms including: A list of all employees, key customers and clients along with their phone numbers; Insurance policies and agent contact information; Back-up electronic data; Equipment, computer software/hardware and furniture inventories; A list of emergency vendors, like plumbers and restoration contractors; Copies of essential business policies, plans and agreements; Photographs of the business, both inside and out.

Business preparation tips: Take the necessary precautions. As a storm threatens, secure your building.

Cover and move equipment and furniture to a secured area; Always protect your data with back up files;

Make plans to work with limited cash and probably no water, sewer or power for at least two weeks; Contact your customers and suppliers regarding your continuity plans; Protect windows and glass doors; Clear the property or tie down any items that could become flying missiles; Fill fleet cars and equipment gas tanks; Turn off electricity, water and gas; If your business is in a non-evacuation area, think about having your business serve as a host home shelter for employees.

Employees need TLC: Communicate your business hurricane plan with your employees. Remember, too, that your associates may need some extra consideration.

Probably all of your employees need time to prepare their own homes and talk with their families about their own personal emergency plans.

Business interruption insurance: Business owners need to think about what they would do if their buildings were unusable after a storm.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind: Understand that Business Interruption Insurance will compensate you for lost income if your company has to leave the site because of disaster-related damage; Be sure that the policy will cover your company for more than a few days. After a disaster, it may take more time to get back up and running; Ask what the waiting period would be before the insurance coverage begins; Explore the cost of adding this coverage to your specific business type.

Some businesses, like restaurants, might have to pay a higher premium based on risk.

“We were set for a flooding event since we are surrounded on three sides by water, but we got a wind event, which is why we had so many trees down and other debris,” added kirby. “our city teams and other cross-departmental personnel collected debris street by street and brought the material to sites set up for collection and processing. There is no plan to formally change any of these ideas.”

These debris clearance activities would take place at the end of the immediate emergency period. damaged utility systems, structurally unstable buildings and other heavily damaged public access facilities must be immediately repaired, deactivated, barricaded, or torn down. demolition of unsafe structures may be delayed if access to the area can be controlled.

The city of St. pete beach will not clear or remove debris from private property unless the debris creates a threat to public health and safety. if the debris clearance and removal task is beyond the resources of the city, county and state, the federal government may provide assistance. fEma’s regional director determines degree of assistance.

St. pete beach handled the debris clearance in 2017 by closely following fEma guidelines and was the fortunate to have no sewage spillage.

St. Pete Beach Mayor Al Johnson told paradise News, “We did not make any ordinance changes but tweaked a few internal rules. our emergency response procedures worked very well and we plan to continue to use them. it took longer than we wanted to but in the end we will be reimbursed from the federal government the majority of the funds the city of St. pete beach had to spend because we carefully adhered to fEma’s very stringent rules.”

Treasure Island City Manager Gary Brumback stated that he was very proud about the way the city’s employees pooled together to clean up the mess left behind by irma. “Employees worked their fingers to the bone using every bit of available resources,” brumback told paradise News. “They helped one another with manpower and equipment to return life to normal after such a large event. and we were forced to do all the cleanup on our own due to the extraordinary circumstances of 2017. We don’t have plans to change our disaster abatement changes.”

No one wants to see another season like 2017 and all emergency personnel hope for the cooperation of the weather these next six months of the official 2018 season.

However, each municipality is looking to be alert and prepared as they do their best in anticipation for the worst. PN

Special note for home-based businesses: All businesses, large and small, are thinking about emergency preparedness. And, home-based business owners should be doing that too. “Home-based business owners should be aware that after a disaster, they may qualify for SBA Disaster Loans and possibly unemployment benefits, if they are unable to work,” said Dr. Cynthia Johnson, Senior Manager of Business Assistance at Pinellas County Economic Development.

A Go Box is another critical item every home-based business owner should pull together. One action to take right now is to back up computer information on CDs or another portable medium. Store those back-ups in the Go Box too. Take photos of your home office, both inside and out, to take along. “Just like all business leaders, homebased business owners should ensure they safeguard essential business documents and information in a Go Box,” said Johnson. Ideally, that box should be backed up in an alternative location in the event the home is destroyed.

Re-entering the County

Sheriff Gualtieri emphasizes, “If you live in a barrier island community, make sure you are registered for and know where you’ve placed your Emergency Access Permit.

When a mandatory evacuation order is lifted, law enforcement officials will scan these permits at designated re-entry points. Barrier island residents may register directly with their city government during its general office hours year-round, so don’t wait until an evacuation order

has been issued to secure yours (See accompanying list of barrier island contacts).

“If you registered for and still possess your Emergency Access Permit from years prior, you DO NOT need to register again. If you don’t know if you need a permit, visit www.pcsoweb.com/emergency-access-permit or call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 727-582-6200.

“If you have evacuated out of the area, returning home can have some challenges if a storm has done significant damage to the county. Bridges and roads may be closed due to damage, flooding or debris. Officials may have entire areas closed off to everyone, even residents. It’s important to remember that coming home is not a guarantee.

So before heading home, be sure to watch or read the news to learn the latest information about road conditions and damage reports for Pinellas County and surrounding areas.

“You will be asked to hang the permit from your vehicle’s rearview mirror for re-entry post-evacuation.

Law enforcement posted at city entrances will scan the bar code on your permit to verify your residence. With your help, we will be able to keep trespassers from easily accessing your property. Permits are available in every barrier island at

It’s Time In The Pinellas County Beaches!

Pinellas County has the most beautiful beaches in the state, the #1 ranked world class international airport, professional sports teams, multiple performing arts centers, and ... the lowest cost of beach properties in the state! In the 1950s we witnessed the growth of Miami and the Gold Coast, in part due to the emergence of television and the Jackie Gleason show. Real estate prices skyrocketed.

Then across the state in Naples, real estate prices seemingly doubled overnight.

Sarasota’s Gulf Coast residential costs quickly followed, and along with the high real estate pricing, so did unbearable traffic. Then the Emerald Coast of Florida in the panhandle sprouted towns like Destin, Seaside and Watercolor, with extremely high housing costs. All of this is great for the 1% folks, but what about the upper middle income retirees that prudently saved money as well as spendable income in 401K’s, that want a great place to retire that they can afford?

I’m alone on the back of a boat. A guy yesterday asked if I was still dumb enough to be working rather than retired. I didn’t reply but I later asked myself the same question. The answer I got was that after almost ½ century in real estate I still don’t have the business figured out and that’s still exciting. How canI help people succeed at the Art of Real estate?

Real estate is an industrythat gives rich or poor the opportunity to be richer or poorer. For me it’s still fun.

Since real estate moves in cycles, I believe the current up cycle is reaching a peak. In many of the world’s cities these peaks have become bubbles. Bubbles don’t deflate, they burst. Down cycles create lots of opportunities in real estate. Properties become more affordable, marginal real estate agents and brokers leave the business and the whole economy seems to take a deep breath and relax. Enough about world economy.

Our Florida economy is stronger than most other states. With no State income tax, low real estate prices compared to other resort areas, high rental returns, an older population wanting to get out of the cold and older homes needing rehab I’m very optimistic about the future of our state generally but our barrier island towns specifically.

It’s a good time to considering selling. Inventory is increasing. The laws of supply and demand are kicking in. The beaches keep me excited to help people thrive during the next economic cycle.

I’m happily floating down the Danube River, not ever retiring, looking forward to helping our barrier islands continue to be the best place to live and visit.

Sea turtle nesting season on many of florida’s sandy beaches has begun. beach front property owners and beach visitors can help nesting turtles and hatchlings by turning off or shielding lights that are visible from the beach at night.

“People’s efforts to keep our beaches as dark as possible at night, without affecting human safety, can make a tremendous difference for nesting sea turtles,” said robbin Trindell, head of the florida fish and Wildlife conservation commission (fWc) sea turtle management program. “Female sea turtles and their hatchlings can be disturbed or confused by artificial light, whether it comes from a house, a flashlight or a cellphone camera.” florida is a critically important destination for nesting sea turtles. more loggerhead turtles nest here than anywhere else in the continental united States, with nearly 97,000 loggerhead nests counted statewide during the 2017 nesting season.

Leatherback and green sea turtles also nest in significant numbers in florida.

What are the basics of being sea turtle-friendly?

It’s a sea turtle night, turn off the light – after sundown, turn off any lights not necessary for human safety. use long wavelength amber LEd lamps for lights that must stay lit and shield lights so they are not visible from the beach. remember to close shades or curtains.

Sea turtles get lost in the light – on the beach at night, don’t take flash photos or use bright cellphones or flashlights.

Sea turtles are protected & must be respected – Stay back and give sea turtles space if you see one on the beach at night. don’t touch a nesting turtle because it may leave the beach without nesting if disturbed. remember, it is illegal to harm or disturb nesting sea turtles, their nests, eggs or hatchlings.

Clear the way at the end of the day – beach furniture, canopies, boats and toys left behind on the sand may become obstacles that block nesting and hatchling turtles. fill in any holes dug in the sand.

Help hatchings home by leaving them alone – do not handle hatchlings crawling toward the water. any interference or disturbance by people, such as getting too close or taking flash photos, increases the chances the hatchlings will get confused, go in the wrong direction and not reach the ocean quickly. That makes them vulnerable to dehydration, exhaustion and predators. as with all wildlife, watching from a distance is best.

buildings and other structures along the beach that need lights for human safety can be lit with long wavelength amber LEd bulbs in a downwarddirected, well-shielded fixture that is not visible from the beach. The fWc tests lights submitted by manufacturers to see if they meet our “keep it long (wavelength), keep it low (lumens & mounting height) and “Keep it shielded” requirement. approved fixtures are less likely to impact nesting or hatchling sea turtles. The agency maintains a list of these certified wildlife-friendly fixtures so property owners along florida’s coastlines can easily find options that work for human and sea turtle safety. The Florida Orchestra to teach violin classes through Prodigy Cultural Arts Program TFO will provide free group lessons, musical activites to at-risk kids.

for the first time, The florida orchestra will offer group violin classes and other musical experiences to eligible children and teens in hillsborough county for free, thanks to a partnership with the university area community development corporation’s (cdc) prodigy cultural arts program. Starting summer of 2018, the orchestra will teach group violin classes to at-risk children and teens ages six to 19 at prodigy cultural arts sites in the Tampa area.

The orchestra also will offer the instrument petting Zoo, which gives students the opportunity to see, touch and play instruments.

Students may participate in and attend orchestra performances, and more musical activities may be developed based on student interest. all will be provided free for the students.

The university area cdc and hillsborough county jointly will provide $80,000 in funding for the activities, including instruments and other class supplies. The funding also allows the orchestra to hire a violin instructor and part-time coordinator dedicated to the partnership.

prodigy, a research proven diversion and prevention program, uses an innovative approach to empower, educate and enable at-risk youth, providing a doorway to a better world. youth ages five to 18 years of age experience performing and visual arts, taught as a tool for self-expression, to learn communication, exploration, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. Now celebrating its 18th year, prodigy is transforming young lives and now reaches across 10 counties.

The prodigy activities are a key component as Tfo builds a strong structure of community and education programs as part of its core mission, guided by Music Director Michael Francis and horan. The orchestra performs free hospital, park and school concerts, and works with schools and youth orchestras through side-by-side concerts and more. in pinellas county, this is the first full year of Tfo’s teaching artist program, which has helped build and guide strings programs in schools.

Last season, Tfo served 80,000 people through community programs – most for free.

Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of broken glass” in partnership with the florida holocaust museum. “it’s extraordinary as a dramatic, powerful, brand-new piece for the audience to hear,” said francis, “but it’s also very accessible, beautiful and memorable.”

The Planets (Feb. 15-17, 2019) holst’s The Planets, includes a hidden gem: music as a living art form. francis and his wife, cindy, are sponsoring a new work by university of South florida associate professor baljinder Sekhon..

This goes along with his mission to explore the masterworks in a new light and discover new music. “We are a vibrant orchestra for the 21st century,” francis said. “it’s important that we stay absolutely fresh and treat music as a living art.” right now, he is focused on commissioning only florida talent.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Feb. 22-24, 2019) Everybody can hum mendelssohn’s famous “Wedding march” from this work, but the orchestra will go all out to perform a complete and enhanced version based on William Shakespeare’s play allowing Tfo to collaborate with local organizations. The plan is to have singers and actors join the orchestra because music can unite a community. “This is a great opportunity for local arts organizations to celebrate each other and the Tampa bay community,” francis said.

2018 ARTISTS’ GRANT AWARDS

Individual Artist Grant Program offers financial assistance to resident artists for projects that support public engagement.

Arnie Arluke, photographer of roller derby skaters—photographed deadly rival roller derby dressed in skating attire while posed in St. petersburg locations. he hopes to exhibit approximately 21 photographs at the St. petersburg chamber of commerce and the Slayground.

Donald Gialanella, using atmospheric air pressure implosion, will create a series of tests to determine the optimal amount of heating, steel gauge, and degree of deformation needed to construct an air- pressure formed sculpture.

Paula Kramer will produce Take A Chance Dance, a choreo/Theater project that includes new works created by Literature and performing artists bob devin-Jones, fanni green and maureen mcdole from three different perspectives. Each artist will perform his/her work in individual showings at selected sites.

Desiree Moore is a multidisciplinary artist with an active collaborative practice. She will transform barter boat, a large public art project by radar art, into a mobile version. The barter bike will allow spontaneous interactions in downtown St. petersburg that beckon people to trade

New Walkway Open at Florida Botanical Gardens

• Wetlands Walkway and Wildlife overlook now open at The florida botanical gardens • Walkway includes boardwalks and overlook into wildlife areas • project primarily funded by donations collected at holiday Lights event The Wetlands Walkway and Wildlife overlook, a new section of The florida botanical gardens, is now open. it completes a loop in the gardens’ trails that will provide visitors a closer look at the native plants and animals that live there.

The walkway opened earlier this month with a dedication ceremony during the florida botanical gardens foundation’s annual membership meeting.

The walkway includes a boardwalk, viewing areas and new native plantings to attract wildlife by providing additional habitat.

The boardwalk and walkway paths lead guests through part of The gardens’ wetland area and open into an overlook to give a broader view of the nature and wildlife that reside there including numerous bird species, mammals and reptiles.

The project was primarily funded by donations the florida botanical gardens foundation collects during the annual holiday Lights event.

The foundation partners with pinellas county’s parks and conservation resources department to continue making The gardens a world class experience for both residents of pinellas county and tourists.

The Florida Botanical Gardens is located at 12520 ulmerton road in Largo, with an alternate entrance at 12211 Walsingham road.

219 miles of fishing line cleaned at

MoNo cLEAN-A-thoN!

Thank you to our 38 volunteers who participated in our mono clean-a-thon on Saturday morning. We cleaned an estimated 219 miles of fishing line which vastly exceeded our goal of cleaning 50 miles! This line was collected from local fishing docks and will be sent to berkeley fishing to be recycled into fishing equipment or fish habitats. it’s important to remove monofilament from the environment since it’s a serious threat to birds and other wildlife and it takes over 600 years to decompose. discarded fishing line collects in local bird sanctuaries and colonial nesting areas where birds and other wildlife can easily become entangled or hooked. a special thanks to planet Love Life who participated in this successful event and donated bracelets to our raffle which are made from 100% salvaged fishing nets, ropes, & lines collected during ocean & beach cleanup projects around the world!

Tampa bay Watch has an opportunity for high school students (minimum age of 15 years old) to volunteer with us over the summer.

The program will take place on each monday from June 4 - July 30 from 9 am - noon (with the exception of July 2) at our facility in Tierra Verde. usually there is a group of ten students and one of our staff leads an environmental project such as cleaning fishing line, cleaning a shoreline, or planting marsh grasses.

By Captain Mark & Dylan Hubbard 727.393.1947 John’s Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach HubbardsMarina.com in Shore Mangrove snapper are thick around the docks and rocks of Johns pass on the south side of the pass under the bridge. on the tail end of a clear incoming tide, large schools of mangrove snapper are ready to feed on 10-20lb floro and a Size 1 hook with a piece of shrimp for bait.

Lots of snook are being caught inside the pass. John coger, hubbard’s marina dock master, caught a half dozen of them using a 60lb hand line and a tail hooked pinfish for bait on the tail end of the outgoing tide just before sunrise one day. There’s lots of snook caught at night whenever the water is moving, but the outgoing tide seems best. Whiting are biting well on live shrimp weighted to the bottom.

Near Shore Some nice Hogfish were caught aboard our 10 hour all-day fishing trips and a couple on the half days.

There are kingfish and mackerel in the near shore waters too, however, the size to the kingfish is much smaller near vs offshore.

offshore The tuna bite has been stellar around sunrise or sunset offshore in the deeper waters. We have been trolling the Rapala xrap magnum 30’s or 40’s especially the blue sardine or red head white body color patterns. plus, we’re getting them vertical jigging and flat line fishing out there on our long-range trips. Red grouper bite is much better offshore than anywhere else. yellowtail are big and active and they love the small strips of squid, live shrimp, or small pieces of cut threadfin.

dolphin report it’s a great time to get out dolphin watching to see the aerial displays and acrobatics. male dolphins are traveling in pairs trying to attract a mate and they are working hard to show off. Sometimes 2-3 pairs are working single females. We also have three newborn dolphins in the area, all born between the middle of april and beginning of may!

We’re seeing lots of manatees right now from our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour boat, water taxi boats, and even our island ferry rides!

This is a great sign showing the local manatee population is exploding and our local grass beds are healthy and thriving. We still have baby birds out on dog Leg key, some of them are getting bigger but we still have a handful of the smaller sea birds waiting to learn to leave the nest and hunt on their own.

Madeira Beach Ferry runs 7 days a week with numerous stops in Madeira Beach and West St. pete. park for free at Jungle Prada on park St. or the ABC marina in madeira beach and ride the ferry and trolley to avoid parking challenges. remember there’s a braNd NEW ferry from Fort De Soto County Park out to the beautiful Shell key preserve! There’s plenty of parking there for a $5 all-day entry and parking fee.The Egmont key ferry is running each morning as well with an afternoon ride out to the island from fort de Soto’s bay pier Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. tampabayferry.com
