LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

www.paradisenewsfl.com/letter

Welcome to the 30th August-September edition of Paradise News, the community news magazine for residents of and visitors to St. Petersburg and its barrier islands communities. It is turtle nesting time on the beaches. We are one of a very few places on the globe where some of these turtles make their nests. When they hatch, usually very early in the morning, the newborns find their home in the gulf by the light of the setting moon. Only 1 in 1,000 will make it to adulthood, and their first day is often the hardest. Municipalities on the coast disallow artificial lights that can disorient the youngsters and plan to start ticketing offenders this summer.

Recovery from Hurricane Helene is ongoing throughout the area, but it will never be the same. St. John Vianney Catholic School, for example, which served the community for 73 years and educated many of our local business people, will not reopen. Many homes and hotels, especially non-waterfront single story structures were too badly damaged to be rebuilt under FEMA’s rules. For many, demolition is the next step, to allow elevated reconstruction. St. Pete Beach’s three shopping areas, 8th Ave. in Pass-a-Grille, Corey Ave. (74th) and Gulf Boulevard, were all seriously impacted by flooding. Dolphin Village Shopping Center, the largest concentration of shops on the island, is reeling after the island’s only CVS caught fire due to a salt water damaged, in-ground receptacle, that sparked up under the nail polish display. The fire spread through the center’s façade as far as Publix and took out the only full-size grocery store in town. Everything from CVS through Dollar Tree is empty. With the anchors gone, the rest of the stores are desperate for your visit.

We are still working remotely from an 8th floor downtown condo, as our north St. Pete Beach home and office recovers. It has a new roof, new appliances, including a new air conditioner, new walls and baseboards. The Terrazzo floors were diamond polished by Organiclean. Cypress baseboards from Anderson Lumber were stained golden oak and spar varnished to match the ceiling in the main rooms, carrying the home’s best feature throughout. The guest bath is changing from an old tub to a walk-in shower. Cupboards and flood-resistant doors are coming soon. Then lastly furniture. When it is all done, we’ll tent for termites and move back home, hopefully in time for the holidays, weather permitting.

Meanwhile, it is getting to be the height of hurricane season again. Helene was the first time we flooded in over 100 years, but with global warming, it could easily happen again. Don’t end up on your roof like we did.

Congratulations to Jeff Beggins of Century 21 Beggins for his success pre-selling Madeira Beach’s Marriott branded Beachmaker Resort which will break ground this fall. Exciting investment opportunities featuring an income-producing rental program designed to provide suite owners with three months use and enough rental income to cover payments. There are just a couple units left at pre-construction prices.

We are also thrilled to welcome our newest health and wellness advertisers, including Renee’s primary care physician, Colin Chan, who is number 1 out of 338 family doctors in St. Petersburg, according to RateMD. Some readers may remember seeing Chan’s colleague, Dr. Jason Phillippe in Paradise News a few years ago. Welcome back Jason! If you need a new doctor, both of these gentlemen are amazing.

Also on Aug. 16, the Pinellas Beaches (aka TI & Mad Beach) Chamber of Commerce hold their annual Monte Carlo Casino Night, this year, once again, at the West Events Center on Gulf Blvd. in Madeira Beach. They may be sold out, but if interested, call Jill at 727-360-4121.

St. Pete Beach city commission appointed Jon Maldonado as District 4 commissioner to represent Pass-a-Grille and Vina Del Mar to replace Joe Mulholland who resigned effective June 24. An election on Nov. 4 will select the commissioner to finish out Joe’s term through March 2027.

Also on June 24, Treasure Island hired an army veteran, former school superintendent and current city manager of Keystone Heights in North Florida’s Clay County. The commission, mayor and vice mayor were unanimous in their approval of Charles Van Zant as interim city manager.

If he meets performance goals, the job will be permanent, otherwise a new search will be held.

Madeira Beach has 37 beach groins running from personal property lines into the Gulf that date back to the 1950’s. Of those, 22 were deteriorating and were recently rebuilt. The city of Madeira Beach got a matching 1.75 million dollar grant from Florida Division of Environmental Protection. The groins have been a very effective way of keeping sand on the beach in Madeira Beach for over 70 years. Sand accumulates naturally rather than having to be pumped ashore like is done for beaches north and south of Madeira.

St. Pete Beach is working on a new Beach Ordinance The legislation has been broken into three separate ordinance proposals.

Ord 1: Behavioral: issues like abandoned property, smoking, unattended fishing lines, pop up businesses, tent sizes, etc.

Ord 2: Wildlife & Lighting: Updates lighting technology terminology, signage and pool lighting rules.

Ord 3: Cabana Services / Alcohol / Beach Furniture: Storing beach furniture daily and set back rules.

Ordinances will be reviewed at the August 20 Beach Stewardship Committee Meeting.

According to a new study by WalletHub, St. Petersburg is in the top 20 cities in the country for recreation The ranking celebrates cities that prioritize parks, outdoor amenities, and accessible entertainment. St. Pete offers year-round outdoor recreational experiences for all ages. North Shore Park for example, features one of the city’s popular outdoor gyms, along with public restrooms, beach volleyball courts, tennis courts, an outdoor shower area, and scenic walking paths that wind through an arboretum. The park is also home to the lively North Shore Aquatic Complex, a favorite for swimmers and families. A nearby sidewalk stretches along Coffee Pot Boulevard, offering a peaceful waterfront route for runners and walkers alike. Throughout the city, the St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department hosts a variety of fitness classes outdoors. Residents can join group sessions for cardio kickboxing, yoga, kayaking, and pickleball. These programs are spread across parks citywide, making it easier than ever to stay active without spending a dime. Visit online at www.stpeteparksrec.org

100 Women Who Care of Pinellas County recently celebrated its 50th meeting (spanning 13 years of giving) by donating nearly $20,000 to Good Neighbors Food Bank.

On average, nine fatalities occur each day on Florida roadways. The state developed a 2026 safety plan to reduce the number of accidents. Florida is leading the nation in preparing to meet the transportation safety and mobility challenges that arise from the inevitable increases to the aging population. The Florida Department of Transportation developed and maintains a website to support the work and efforts of our Safe Mobility for Life Coalition. It is the Coalition’s mission to reduce crashes by improving the safety, access, and mobility of Florida’s aging road users. To learn more, visit www.SafeMobilityFL.com

CASA Pinellas is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its domestic violence shelter, one of the largest in the state of Florida. A decade ago, survivors in Pinellas County often had to choose between escaping abuse or staying with their pets. CASA Pinellas changed that –and since then, its shelter has provided safety to thousands of families and their animals. The launch of the shelter in 2015 tripled CASA’s capacity. Last year alone, CASA provided over 23,000 bed nights at its shelter for survivors and their children fleeing abuse.

Pinellas County completed the northern segment of the Pinellas Trail Loop in mid -uly with the opening of the Lake Tarpon Outfall Canal Bridge! The new pedestrian bridge

at McMullen Booth Road and Tampa Road in Palm Harbor creates 65 contiguous miles of trail. Eventually, the loop will encircle Pinellas. See Pinellas County’s announcement video on Instagram and read more about the project on their website!

Hurricane Helene did a number on beach towns like Pass-a-Grille, Sunset Beach and Madeira Beach. Mary Ann Ferenc, famous for her Mise en Place iconic eatery near the University of Tampa, built The Dewey and the Berkeley Beach Club, 109 8th Avenue, Pass-AGrille, as her retirement dream. That dream turned into a nightmare on Sept. 26, 2024, when a wall of sand and water invaded the businesses on Eighth Ave. Expected insurance proceeds have not materialized. In mid-July, the three-story concrete building and businesses were sold to Helen and Dave Feinburg of Pass-a-Grille to be run with their daughter.

The Manatee Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller is holding $64,914.35 in unclaimed funds – and some of it might belong to you. The Clerk’s annual list of unclaimed funds includes 818 checks for jury duty, court fee refunds, vendor invoices, and other court-related services payments. If unclaimed by Sept. 1 the funds will be forfeited under Florida law. “We encourage residents and vendors to check the list –your name might be on it,” said Angel Colonneso, Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. “It only takes a few minutes to claim what’s yours.”

If you believe you may have unclaimed funds, contact the Clerk’s Accounting Division by email at clerkaccounting@ manateeclerk.com or call 941-749-1800 for instructions on how to file a claim.

Other county clerks likely have a similar issue.

The Wharf Restaurant & Bar in St. Pete Beach’s Pass-aGrille has added a private party space off the front patio, big enough for 15 guests and it can be reserved in advance and comes with a dedicated server. The new docks and back patio dining area are ready for action, and the new menu features a fan favorite from the daily specials, bang bang shrimp. With the best grouper sandwich on the beach, sensational seafood entrees (mahi, scallops), shrimply delicious appetizers including coconut and peel-neat shrimp and Tuesday Wharf Famous Fish Fry and Taco Wednesday, no wonder it’s a local and visitor favorite with a never-ending waterview and friendly service. There’s a kid’s menu, specialty cocktails and new shirts and hats with Petey the Pelican logo (no relation to publisher Pete Roos, but just as handsome) and key lime pie that sweetens everyone’s day. Best of all, rocking live music is BACK with Rob Tyre Wed.-Sat. 6-9:30pm, weather permitting. Happy hour Mon.-Fri., 3:30-6pm (bar only).

needing emergency repairs, The Shutter Man is a name you can count on. Visit their website www.TheShuttermanFL.com, and check out some of the many 5-star reviews they have earned in the past decade. Here is a pertinent example:

Highly recommend The Shutter Man for your hurricane shutter needs. I messaged them via their website requesting info on preventative maintenance services for my shutters. I was contacted very soon and the owner Tony came and looked at my current shutters and provided a quote within a day and a half. He and his staff are very professional and customer oriented and did a very thorough job of explaining what all would be done to my shutters and were able to get me scheduled quickly. Tony and Bobby came out and did the work. Extremely diligent about doing the work correctly. Cost ended up being just as quoted. I will be using them again for any future needs.

–Scott Chain 3 months ago

Tony has advised that he has recently started representing Alta for interior shades and shutters as well as hurricane shutters, so email theshutterman727@gmail.com or call 727-810-4606 NOW for any of your shutter and shade needs.

PASS-A-GRILLE MUSEUM

In 1995, Paradise News was founded by two local visionaries – Sarah “Renee” LaFountain Roos of Tampa and Sally Yoder, a lifelong resident of St. Pete Beach. Long before that, the pair were volunteer publishers for the neighborhoods of Pass-a-Grille and Vina Del Mar, brought together by their shared passion for preserving the past. As volunteers, they helped transform the island’s oldest church into what would become a community treasure: The Gulf Beaches Historical Museum.

This historic structure was saved from demolition by Washington socialite Joan Haley, who lived in it for years before leaving it to Pinellas County in her will. Renee helped clean and curate the museum’s original exhibits, many of which are still viewable online. Sally served as its first archivist. But on September 26, 2024, Pass-a-Grille was briefly submerged during Hurricane Helene, the first time in over a century. The museum suffered serious

damage. Though initial cleanup is complete, full restoration awaits county funding. Plans are emerging: the historic cottage will be elevated, and the storm-damaged “barracks” once used for social gatherings and museum work may be replaced entirely. Sadly, the handcrafted wooden display cases donated by beloved local Alfred Ingram were lost in the aftermath. While Pinellas County determines its course, the museum’s collections are in temporary storage with Heritage Village. But we, the community, have a role to play right now. The Friends of the Museum need your support.

They’re raising funds to build new displays and keep our history alive through events and fundraisers. Thanks to a strong commitment to the community, Paradise Grille reached out to museum volunteer Lisa Marone and offered to join the effort, inviting patrons to “round up” each purchase in support of the museum’s recovery.

You can help too. Here’s how: Donate today to the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum. Become a Friend of the Museum. Support local businesses like Paradise Grille that give back. Attend fundraising events and bring a friend.

Spread the word… our story is worth saving. This isn’t just about restoring a building. It’s about honoring our shared identity, preserving the spirit of the beaches, and keeping the past alive for the generations ahead. And we’ve done it before.

Back on July 4th, 1996, over 5,000 people crowded the beach in Pass-a-Grille for a free concert to raise funds for a much-needed new roof on the museum. The band? The Spin Doctors, just two weeks after their first #1 hit. That night, $16,000 was raised in four hours. The roof held strong for 25 years.

Now it’s our turn. Let’s make history again. Get involved today at www.gulfbeacheshistoricalmuseum.org

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Seems like everyone we know is having work done on their coastal properties. We are no exception. We vet our advertisers carefully, ensuring virtually all their clients are pleased with their services, but do your own research and let us know if one of the businesses we promote ever disappoints you. Many of the advertisers in Paradise News have already helped us with our recovery, so we can personally vouch for them.

Red Royal Electric 727-275-1616 for example, did a partial rewire for us, raising all the outlets and bringing our 1956 vintage single-story ranch up to code. We were very pleased with their professionalism. Red Royal 727-242-9365 also offers air conditioning service with the same professional standards.

OrganiCLEAN 727-977-8889 handled our demo, mold remediation, then diamond-polished our terrazzo floors. Now, they are helping us install a walk-in shower where a tub used to be. They also helped us install interior doors and beautifully stain, varnish and install cypress baseboards, purchased from Anderson Lumber in Gulfport 727-321-3111

Tommy Locksmith 727-755-3975 takes care of our door locks. We all need new closets, and Tony at New Closet Today is still offering a $100 flood discount. Call 727-641-6448.

If you need shades, Budget 727-821-0976 and Sapphire Shades and Shutters 727-289-1629 will be happy to come out and quote.

Screens need repair? Call Re-Screen Rescue 727-348-4307.

We also welcome back, just in time for the height of hurricane season, the Shutterman, for hurricane shutter service, sales, removal and installation. Call Tony at 727-810-4606.

CO-PARENT STRATEGIES FOR UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR

We mostly write about the mechanics of parenting plans. The sooner both parents understand the key components, the more likely they will develop a plan together and avoid destructive litigation. For this article, we want to discuss strategy.

When both co-parents engage in their child’s education outcomes improve. Coordinating school logistics and tracking academic progress is more complex across two households. Consistent communication between co-parents and the school is crucial. The reality, no matter how important collaboration is, it takes (2). The solution? Accountability. How is this achieved if all else fails? Possibly court.

We write this from the perspective of Co-Parent A (CPA), a non-residential parent with time-sharing on weekends who does not transport the child to/from school, lacking regular in-person interaction with school personnel. CPA is committed to collaborative co-parenting. The residential co-parent (CPB) is not cooperating. In fact, CPB told the school that all communication flows through them. CPA has been shut out from parent-school email updates, progress reports and has missed events because they weren’t informed.

Why is this important to CPA? 1) Taking school success seriously is part of their job. 2) Limited information creates missed opportunities to bond. 3) Many custody cases have hinged on a parent’s school involvement. CPA’s commendable efforts to co-parent needs a new strategy. With a new school year on the horizon, now is the time to deploy.

Communication With School: Share via email the custody orders and copy CPB. It is essential that the school has accurate information. The school can’t keep track of the details of all custody arrangements.

Build a Rapport: Refer to the custody agreement to participate in your child’s education. Offer to speak with each educator about the co-parent situation without disparaging CPB. Request all updates shared with both parents, starting today. Request acknowledgement.

Offer Your Time: Take advantage of the value schools place on involvement. Share your willingness to engage knowing that parent-school relationships improve student outcomes.

Your efforts must be documented. If communication does not improve, consult an attorney. Accountability can be achieved if CPB must explain to the judge why they ignore the order. DINING

This summer, if you’re not grilling at home, venture out to try some of the best burgers in the Burg! Our restaurants have tasty offerings for all foodie preferences – thick, juicy burgers with inventive toppings, thinner old-fashioned style patties and plentiful vegan/vegetarian options. Is your stomach growling yet?

ENGINE NO. 9

While the residents of Sunshine City are always actively debating the topic, a consensus has formed that Engine No. 9 is the place to find the best gourmet burger in town. The sports bar debuted in the Edge District in 2012 and owner Jason Esposito (of the Tampa Bay Lightning Espositos), has consistently found his restaurant voted as having one of the best burgers in Tampa Bay. I have to admit I am a big fan. All of their burgers are made with 8oz. of prime Black Angus beef and a choice of side (my go-to is the sweet potato fries). My favorite on their menu is the Demi-God burger: swiss and cheddar cheese, sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions and horseradish mayo – cooked to perfection. Also popular is the Heart Attack Burger topped with a fried egg, American cheese and bacon, and chipotle mayo. They don’t take reservations, but their burgers are well worth any wait.

Sun. and Mon. 11:30am-10pm, Tues.-Sat. 11:30am-12am www.no9burgers.com

EL CAP

El Cap is a St. Pete classic. The restaurant opened in 1964 and is under new ownership as of last year; however, it still retains its charm. El Cap is one of the best old school restaurants in the city, serving no-nonsense fare that the locals continue to crave. The servers make you feel like family, and you’ll find comfort in the memorabilia on the walls and the laid-back atmosphere. Their burgers will more than hit the spot (I suggest the Daily Double) and their fries and onion rings are addictively good. The covered outdoor seating is pet-friendly and there are plenty of big screens inside, if you’re there to watch a game. With great prices and friendly faces, you can’t go wrong with El Cap.

BRICK & MORTAR

Brick & Mortar is the culinary vision of husband and wife duo chefs Jason Ruhe and Hope Montogomery. They launched on Central Avenue in 2015 and have had a loyal following since, repeatedly landing on Top Ten dining lists in St. Pete. With a rustic chic vibe, attentive service and a seasonal menu featuring creative New American cuisine, Brick & Mortar offers an exceptional dining experience. Their burger, with house ground beef, sharp white cheddar, arugula, bacon onion jam, and garlic aioli on a pretzel bun, paired with handcut truffle fries, scores high on locals’ lists with good reason. Other favorite menu items include the braised short rib pasta with crispy brussel sprouts and the flavorful seafood bouillabaisse. Chefs Ruhe and Montogomery are also the creator/operators behind Sea Worthy Fish and Bar in Tierra Verde and Pulpo Kitchen and Lounge in the Grand Central District, which are both excellent eateries as well.

Closed Mondays, Tues. 5pm-9pm, Wed.-Thurs. 5pm-10pm, Fri.-Sat. 4pm-10:30pm, Sun. 4pm-9pm www.brickandmortarstpete.com

BOULEVARD BURGERS & TAP HOUSE

On the beachside, the best burger can be found at Boulevard Burgers & Tap House (and it may be the biggest in town, too!). They are known for their unique burgers, from the ultra-spicy Ghost Rider burger (you’ve been warned) and the Epic Shrimp burger, to the Kage the Bay burger (topped with a chicken tender) and the Haystack, which is piled high with skinny onion rings. The Veggie Burger is a hit with plant-based diners. Boulevard is popular for its all-day happy hour, offering $6 margaritas and $5 well drinks, and their Yappy Hours on Saturdays are “Fido approved.” With indoor and outdoor seating and live music on weekends, Boulevard delivers both a terrific meal and a fun time.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

HEALTH & HURRICANES

Making Body and Mind More Resilient

When hurricane season arrives, we tend to pay more attention to safeguarding our homes and property, which is important, but perhaps we should give equal consideration to our most valuable asset – ourselves. Hurricanes bring more than wind, rain, and surge. As we found from the one-two punch of last season, they also bring physical, mental, and emotional strain. So how do we prepare our bodies and minds for what’s ahead, and how do we become more resilient?

BEFORE A HURRICANE

Now is the time to make those doctor appointments you’ve been putting off,

especially if you need to refill prescriptions. You should have a two-week to one month supply of medications on hand before a storm hits. It’s also a good idea to get a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the last 10 years. Your hurricane emergency bag should include a first aid kit, prescription medications, your doctor’s contact information, and a copy of your medical insurance card. If you use any kind of medical equipment, be sure to have a battery backup system in place in case of power outage. Wear medical alert tags so that first responders have the information they need.

To build resilience and prepare for stress, practice a healthy lifestyle that boosts your immune system. Get plenty of sleep and maybe add a short nap when you can. Take vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as the minerals zinc and selenium. Eat healthy foods and exercise to maintain a normal BMI, and a level of fitness that will serve you well after the storm. Make sure you stay well-hydrated, especially in this summer heat, as our hydration levels tend to drop during and after a hurricane. If you are already struggling with mental health, seek counseling now. You can also find support in your community by building strong relationships with friends and neighbors.

Emotional resilience requires a sense of belonging and knowing there are people you can count on in a crisis. Sharing your feelings, especially your fears, with others can alleviate anxiety and lower the sense of isolation. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as breathing, meditation, and yoga, which will give you the tools you’ll need to manage stress and keep emotional balance during disaster situations. Try to limit your media exposure. While it’s difficult in this age of 24-hour news and social media, self-care requires self-focus. As a hurricane approaches, we tend to glue ourselves to the television or internet. If you’re like me, you’ve probably become conditioned to feel anxious when you hear the “hurricane music” they use on The Weather Channel. It’s best to forego the more sensationalized hurricane coverage and listen to our local meteorologists who offer insightful, calm, and measured coverage as the storm approaches. Preparation, not panic, is key.

DURING A HURRICANE

If you are not ordered to evacuate, locate a safe space to ride out the storm in your home. Choose a location on the ground floor with no windows, such as a large closet, where you can set up a comfortable sleeping space and store your emergency

kit, battery powered fan, and supplies. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if the power goes out and your home heats up. While facing a hurricane may tempt you to eat junk food for comfort, there are plenty of healthy non-perishable foods that will help your immunity through the storm. Eat tuna, salmon, or chicken packets on rice cakes, canned fruit (in water, not syrup), dried fruit, nuts and seeds, canned vegetables like artichokes, olives, beans, and carrots that don’t need heating, and crackers with nut butter and no-sugar added jelly. For a sweet treat, enjoy some honey and ginger candy to calm your stomach. Try to get as much sleep as possible so that you can face the aftermath with a clear head.

AFTER A HURRICANE

Immediately following the storm, it is important to avoid the health hazards all around you. If the power is out, do not use candles, and don’t strike a match in case there are broken gas lines. Watch out for downed power lines which could still be live, as well as trees and building structures that are unstable and could fall on you. Keep out of floodwaters, which are full of bacteria and contaminants. You could get cut by floating debris and get an infection. Always wear protective clothing when cleaning up, including safety boots, safety

goggles, gloves, and a mask. Beware of lingering moisture in your home that leads to mold and causes health problems. If working outside, be sure to use bug spray as mosquitoes thrive in standing water and carry a host of diseases. Never put a generator indoors, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. If you don’t have air conditioning use battery or solar powered fans to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. And, of course, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! To avoid eating unsafe food be sure to throw out all perishable food in the refrigerator if you lost power for more than four hours. Throw out everything in your freezer, too, if your power was out for more than 24 hours.

When it comes to your mental health, anxiety, depression, and PTSD tend to spike after hurricanes. Hurricanes disrupt your life, damage property, and add a layer of stress above and beyond your normal load. The pre-hurricane anxiety, followed by the post-hurricane stress of clean-up and damage assessment can lead to exhaustion. Your self-care is more important than ever at this point. Take a moment to catch your breath and employ those stress relief tools you practiced before the storm. Get as much sleep as possible and nap when needed.

Try to get back to your exercise routine. If you are struggling emotionally, talk to family, friends and neighbors and ask for help when you need support. While it’s hard sometimes to ask for help, everyone needs it at some point. Remember that you are human, that you are entitled to your feelings, and that you might experience a range of emotions after a hurricane.

Pinellas County offers hurricane-related mental help support. The Disaster Distress Helpline is a toll-free, multilingual, and ASL supported helpline available 24/7 that offers crisis counseling for disaster-related emotional distress. Call or text 1-800-9855990. Care About Me is Pinellas County’s access line for mental health and substance use services. Call or text 1-888-431-1998 or go to careaboutme.org to connect with a behavioral health specialist.

While we hope to be spared of hurricane activity this season, it’s always best to have mind and body prepared. When you take care of yourself before, during and after a hurricane, you will have the good health and energy needed to handle everything else!

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

KEMP’S RIDLEY TURTLES

Kemp’s ridleys can be found in the shallow coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico and southern Atlantic where they find their favorite food – crabs. Like all sea turtles, this sea turtle swims to the surface every few minutes to breath.

This species mainly inhabits the Gulf of Mexico where almost the entire Kemp’s ridley sea turtle population nests along the coast of the state of Tamaulipasan, just south of the U.S./Mexico border in an area called Rancho Nuevo.

The Kemp’s ridley is the only sea turtle to nest during the day! With only about 1,000 breeding females today, this rare species is actively protected by both the United States and Mexico and is successfully making a slow recovery.

The Kemp’s ridley turtle populations have drastically declined since the 1940’s due to the effects of man – man harvesting both the eggs and turtles, shrimp trawlers catching them in their nets, boat propellers, fishing entanglements, pollution (ingested plastics), coastal development, red tide, beach activities like cleaning vehicles, drive-on locations, and oil spills. Sharks are also a threat to this turtle as they are their only natural predator.

ANTI-AGING SPECIALIST

Many of you know that my wife Renee and I have been married over 50 years. We have often shared practitioners, including primary care doctors. A decade ago, our prior mutual primary care physician described her as “medically boring.” A few years after, our longtime friend and astrologer was raving about the doctor that had recently changed her life by prescribing bioidentical hormones. We switched Renee to Blue Cross so she could see Dr. Colin Chan as her primary care physician. He did not disappoint her. He discovered a serious heavy metal condition she had lived with most of her life, which he treated effectively with his in-house chelation facility.

We switched her again to United Healthcare, the only Medicare advantage plan that reimburses for chelation treatments, and I am happy to say that testing shows a more than 90% decrease in heavy metals in her body. We have since referred a few friends to his practice with great results.

Now, we would like to introduce you to the #1 of 338 of family doctors in St. Petersburg, according to RateMDs. Colin Chan and Associates’ mission is to provide cutting-edge anti-aging techniques to help you live longer and treat disease processes that

conventional medicine can’t. With over 20+ years of experience and having attended over 100+ conferences both nationally and internationally, Dr. Chan is a top-rated holistic medical expert who focuses on finding the root cause of illnesses.

He also surrounds himself with a strong support team, with Karen Johnson APRN, for example, regularly seeing Dr. Chan’s primary care patients after their initial diagnostic visits. Dr. Jason Phillippe and his APRN, Therese Grandlienard run Colin Chan and Associates’ West Coast Primary Care, at 603 Seventh St. S. #520, in downtown St. Pete. Longtime readers may remember Dr. Phillippe from a time when he wrote the health and wellness column for Paradise News a few years ago.

Dr. Chan’s west Florida office offers a number of cutting-edge therapies, provided especially for members of his hybrid concierge medical practice. While most concierge practices are very pricy and don’t bill insurances, Chan’s hybrid concierge system takes full advantage of services that insurance companies are willing to pay for, keeping patient costs way more affordable.

With a mission to find the root cause of each disease, he actively searches for early detection of heart disease, cancers, dementia and toxic metals. He also addresses undesirable changes in aging,

loss of energy, weight gain, joint pain and cardiovascular problems. These risks can be identified and addressed years before they cause serious problems. He is an expert in the use of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and has helped many patients over the past decade achieve optimal and safe hormone balance.

Other in-house therapies include but are not limited to:

• Chelation Therapy

• Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

• Integrative Medicine

• IV Nutrition Therapy

• LED Light Therapy

Dr. Chan’s west Florida office is located in the center of Tampa Bay, just north of Home Shopping Channel’s old headquarters at 12450 Roosevelt Blvd. N., Suite 101, St. Petersburg, FL 33716. They are open six days a week, weekdays 8am-5pm (phones 9am-4pm) and Saturday until 2pm.

If you are looking for a doctor who will treat you well, using all that both conventional and alternative medicine has to offer, consider meeting Dr. Colin Chan.

For more information, visit www.ColinChanMD.com and call them at 727-571-1688 for an appointment.

Minimizing Mosquito Populations and Red Tide Threat

With the arrival of summer and the rainy season, mosquito activity will increase – especially in areas with standing water. If there are any places around your house where water is collected, you may be raising mosquitoes.

All mosquitoes need water for their early stages. Some lay their eggs in standing water where they hatch in just a few days. Others lay their eggs in other water-holding containers where they may remain unhatched for weeks or months until they are covered with water. Mosquitoes can carry serious illnesses, such as West Nile, Zika, and Dengue. Prevention protects everyone.

Pinellas County addresses mosquito concerns through its SeeClickFix reporting system, allowing residents to easily report problem areas. You can help reduce mosquito populations by checking your property regularly and eliminating any standing water in items like flowerpots, birdbaths, and gutters.

Other best practices to reduce mosquito populations:

• Empty and properly maintain swimming pools.

• Empty, remove, cover or turn upside down any receptacle that would hold water – particularly buckets and trash cans.

• Empty plastic wading pools, children’s toys, trash cans, plant saucers and wheelbarrows.

• Get rid of old tires, tin cans, bottles, jars, and other containers – or keep them empty.

• Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets; drain hoses frequently.

For more information, visit: www.pinellas.gov/mosquito-control

Also, check out Squito Stickers from BugMD. We know citronella confuses mosquito radar. These folks applied citronella to little green fabric stickers that stick on your clothes to take citronella oil where ever you go.

Red Tide is an algae bloom that is fed by nitrogen, one of the main ingredients of fertilizer used on plants and lawns. Sale of fertilizer is restricted locally in the summer to help control runoff in the rainy season. Please do your part. Brown

is way better than red tide.

Businesses on the Beaches Need and Deserve Your Support

Retail businesses, restaurants, salons and boutiques for example, get most of their business from people living or visiting within 10 miles of their location. Many market to a 5-mile radius. Beach businesses are at several disadvantages in this regard. Even in good times, there is only water east and west of the businesses, so they try to market to the north and south, to reach hotel guests and barrier island residents.

Of the residents, the seasonal folks who have summer homes elsewhere have more disposable income. They mostly stayed away last season; in the aftermath of the storms we are still trying to rebuild from.

Visitors too have been in short supply. Numerous older hotels and motels, especially single-story ones like the historic Thunderbird in Treasure Island (since 1957) are to be demolished. Even some of the taller ones, like the Bellwether Resort, St. Pete Beach’s round hotel with dining on Level 11 and a revolving restaurant on the roof, have been out of business for nine months already. The shortage of visitors has added to the shock of evacuated residents.

Most of the businesses operate without flood insurance due to the high costs, so they self-funded their recovery out of their own pockets

when they could or took out SBA loans if they qualified. They were desperate to reopen for business, as their expenses continue and their staff would likely otherwise seek employment elsewhere. The permitting process was a challenge.

Folks who live on and visit the barrier islands value our local businesses. St. Pete Beach has long had the lion’s share of businesses on the beaches. There are three main retail areas in St. Pete Beach, Eighth Avenue in Pass-a-Grille, Gulf Boulevard including Dolphin Village Shopping Center and Corey Avenue (74th Ave).

The county had been replenishing sand on Pass-a-Grille Beach prior to the storms. Helene flooded everything on the ground level and two weeks later, Milton blew most of the sand that was left on the beach into 10-foot drifts on the streets.

Guests are welcome once again at the Tortuga Suite Resort, the Keystone Motel and Berkeley Beach Club, the latter of which is in new hands. Pass-a-Grille restaurants have mostly reopened, except for the Dewey, which seeks a new operator, and the Seahorse, which is progressing daily. Bamboozle, Dody’s Beach Boutique, Evander Preston Gallery, Shadracks and Paradiso are back, as is Etc., now in the hands of new owner, Caryn Bacon. Pass-a-Grille Realty is open for business.

Gulf Boulevard (and Blind Pass Road) are a mixed bag. The absence of Slyce Pizza, Vito and Michaels, Verducci and Hungry Howie’s (at Dolphin Village) has created a potential pizza shortage. Slyce and its neighboring boutiques rented from the presently shuttered PCI Resort.

At Shattered Glass DIY, residents and visitor’s alike have the chance to create a lasting collectible to recall their experience at Dolphin Village in St. Pete Beach.

St. Pete Beach’s Dolphin Village Shopping Center, with the town’s only grocery store and CVS took a triple whammy, but more than a dozen resilient businesses offer a huge variety of goods and services, some unique to this location. The fence around the fire scene from CVS to Publix is disarming but turn left or right and discover more than a dozen businesses looking to greet you. To the left, there’s a Starbucks where the Regions Bank used to be, as well as an Indian restaurant, Dolphin Liquors, Bueno Pizza and a new Jersey Mike’s subs.

We tried the Jersey Mike’s recently and found it well-managed with delicious subs and a staff that aims to please. It is a locally-owned and operated premium sub shop. High quality meats and cheese, sliced in front of you, store baked bread, and the authentic taste – served Mike’s Way, fresh lettuce, onions, tomatoes, oil, vinegar and spices! Everything is served with a smile. Have an event or party coming up? Jersey Mike’s catering is sure to please – choose from subs by the box, subs by the bag or personal boxed lunches and don’t forget the dessert! Cookie and brownie trays are the perfect finale to any type of gathering. The store is open 7am-9pm daily at 4695 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, 727-258-7884.

Dolphin Landings Charter Boat Center, 4737 Gulf Blvd. (behind Jersey Mike’s) takes guests sailing daily for Dolphin Watch and Sunset Sails, as it has for 40 years, on 40-50-foot, locally-built and well-maintained Morgan yachts.

The only full-service boat center operating in the greater Tampa Bay area, public and private boat trips leave from the waterfront location behind Dolphin Village. Boat trips also include Deep Sea Fishing, Back Bay Fishing and Offshore Fishing plus Power Boat Cruising, Snorkeling, Island Adventures to Egmont Key and Shell Key, and Hospitality Cruises. Captain Dan Peretz also runs a not-for-profit, Soothe Our Souls, which takes families of terminal patients sailing for free, and operates a waterfront clubhouse in Treasure Island, which is rented out for events. Call 727-360-7411 for more info about sailing, fishing, chartering, soothing souls, and event rentals. www.dolphinlandings.com

Turn right on entering the center and you will discover almost a dozen more businesses waiting for your visit. The Dollar Tree space is vacant but there’s a Verizon cellular store with Playa Bowls next door. Upstairs in the courtyard you’ll find The Paramount Ballroom. Downstairs there’s Top Shape Fitness, The Fashion Spot, Beach Vibe Cycle Rentals, Hello Sweetie, Tommy Locksmith, and Shattered Glass DIY Experience.

Top Shape Fitness - St. Pete Beach resident and Top Shape Fitness owner, LeeAnn Moore says “Workout with a personal trainer or utilize the open gym machines, free weights, or cardiovascular equipment, or recover in the infrared sauna. All in a clean environment where you feel comfortable working out at your own pace and level. No annual membership and no initiation fees. Choose a monthly package that works best for your goals or for visitors, select a daily or weekly package. We also accept Silver Sneakers, Renew Active, and Silver & Fit insurance programs. Tommy Locksmith - The Beach’s favorite locksmith has had a showroom at Dolphin Village Shopping Center for years and an ad in Paradise News for most of a decade. We suggest you make an appointment to meet him there, as I have found he is often at a client’s home when I stop by. For the last few years, he has been helping people convert from keys to combination door locks, helping to eliminate the constant search for keys. If you ever lost your door key on the beach, Tommy will be your best friend. Weekdays 9am-5pm. 4615 Gulf Blvd., Unit 118, St. Pete Beach, 727-755-3975 www.tommylocksmith.com

CLEARWATER JAZZ HOLIDAY

Celebrates 46 Years with their Return to Roots!

The festival will feature the Tampa Bay Times main stage concerts back on the large green in Coachman Park with two headline performances each night. Two new side stages feature 14 additional performances across the four-day weekend celebration creating a late/afternoon, early evening pre-party before the headliners take the main stage.

VIP and reserved seats are available for purchase and concertgoers can also enjoy the festival from two general admission areas where blankets and lawn chairs are welcome – on the green behind the reserved seating and on the Sunset Bluff overlooking the green. All ticket holders have access to the side stages and food and beverage vendors. “We are excited to bring the festival back with this familiar format that really captures the community feel and magic of the tradition,” explains Steve Weinberger, Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation CEO. “It has that old school Clearwater Jazz Holiday vibe, a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere, and so much great music.”

The 2025 lineup once again offers a diverse festival bill with something for everyone, and a different feel each day from smooth, straight ahead, progressive and big band jazz to funk, soul, blues, Americana roots rock, and everything in between.

Weinberger describes the 2025 experience, “We are thrilled with the lineup and are especially looking forward to the intimacy of the new side stages which are in the immediate vicinity of the large green –making it easy to get up close and personal with the music, check out all the happenings, wander around, and explore Coachman Park in this fun setting.”

True to the CJH mission, there will also be performances from outstanding young

musicians, including many jazz students, past and present, who the folks at CJH often affectionately call Young Lions. HANGING AROUND

stop-and-chat

This story is actually by Lenny Guckenheimer, pinch-hitting for Caron Schwartz, who is on the injured roster due to a broken wrist.

We all have had this situation: We are walking along and someone we know sees us, waves, says “hello,” and begins a conversation. Comedian Larry David describes this encounter as a “stop-and-chat,” and regards them as intrusions. (See this “Curb Your Enthusiasm” clip http://bit.ly/3TuU82Y.)

In contrast, my partner, Caron, has made the stop-and-chat an art form. Of course, we talk with our friends when we see them on the street or in a store, and usually the conversations will last less than a minute. For a stranger walking by, we may acknowledge them with a nod or a “good morning” and walk on. No conversation involved.

However, Caron will find a way to engage a passing stranger in conversation that could easily last several minutes. She’ll notice something interesting about them and begin the conversation, often with a compliment like “nice shoes” or “love your hat.” Everyone loves a compliment. And so the conversation goes … and we run out of time. Then we go our separate ways, each of us feeling good.

I have not known anyone else who does stop-and-chats the way Caron does. Most of us are shy and feel uncomfortable talking with strangers. Children are taught stranger danger. Caron claims to be an introvert. But she genuinely enjoys talking with people.

I have started to categorize Caron’s stop-and-chats. The conversation should be more than “Hello, how are you?” Basic categories include dog-owners, parents with small children and babies, someone with eye-catching jewelry, etc. No matter the situation, people enjoy stopping and chatting with Caron. I’ll bet that even grouchy Larry David would enjoy stopping and chatting with Caron.

ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT

Paradise News Editor Andrea Martone interviewed two talented artists for this month.

Rosanna Devon Rodriguez

Where are you located (town/ city)? And how long have you lived there?

I’ve been splitting my time between New York City and Tampa for the past five years.

Where did you live prior to coming to Florida? And what motivated you to move to the specific town you’re in?

I lived in Los Angeles and then New York City. I lived in Tampa as a kid, so the area and its beaches have always held a personal connection. About eight years ago, my mother’s health began to decline, and I gradually started dividing my time between NYC and Tampa to be closer to her – and to family and friends I have here. What began as a temporary re-rooting turned into a meaningful return.

What type of artist are you (medium)?

I’d describe myself as a visually articulate creative. My background is interior design, but my work spans across event design, event branding, and graphic storytelling. Whether it’s designing a home or crafting an immersive gathering, I approach every project as a visual narrative.

What distinguishes your work from others and what inspires you to create your work?

At the core, I’m in the business of creating an experience. I don’t just design spaces or events – I choreograph how people feel within them. Each project is inspired by its unique energy: the client’s story, the architecture, the intended emotion. Whether it’s a beachfront sanctuary or a multi-sensory corporate gala, I’m always asking: What will linger? What will be remembered? I look for the unexpected detail that transforms a moment from ordinary to unforgettable.

What (if any) awards or recognition have you received for your work?

I was at the top of my design program and placed second in a national interior design competition. My work has been featured in a couple of local publications. And going further back – one of my mixed media pieces was selected for exhibition at the Tampa Museum of Art while I was still in high school. Each of these milestones helped shape the creative path I walk today.

Do you have any permanent exhibits or artwork in any public areas or institutions or businesses?

Because of the nature of my work - interior design and event design - it doesn’t live in traditional exhibit spaces. But in many ways, the interiors

and events themselves are the installation: an immersive living space or temporary and often large-scale event environment that lives in daily life, in memory and images long after the lights go down.

Please give me one or two sentences that tell me something about who you are and the passion you have for your work? (any anecdotal info is helpful). This quote helps the readers better understand who you are as an artist.

“Celebrate living” is my mantra. Whether it’s a beautifully staged home, a thoughtfully curated event, or even something as simple as a wrapped gift –I believe beauty and intentionality elevate our everyday lives. I art-direct everything. I’m driven by harmony, emotional resonance, and storytelling through design. Ultimately, I don’t just create visuals, I create moments worth remembering. Transforming Nature Into Art Gary Greer, Pod Sculptures

Creativity has always been an integral part of Gary Greer’s journey. A graduate of the renowned Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Gary launched his career as a commercial illustrator and designer. His exceptional talent and dedication have been recognized with over 60 Addy Awards for excellence in illustration and design.

His innovative Pod Sculptures have earned recognition in prestigious juried exhibitions, including the Florida CraftArt show, Mainsail Art Festival, St. Petersburg Fine Art Show, Art Harvest in Dunedin,

and Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. Gary’s work has also been featured in Tampa Bay Magazine and celebrated during his tenure as an Artist in Residence at Marriott’s Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota. Currently, several of his striking Pod Sculptures are on display at the Florida CraftArt Gallery in St. Petersburg.

Artist Statement

My Pod Sculptures are born from the natural beauty of palm tree pods, which I shape and refine using traditional woodcrafting techniques. Each pod’s unique texture and contour serve as my canvas, while the music in my studio infuses the process with added inspiration.

As I work, the forms and colors of each sculpture evoke memories of specific songs and artists, which inspire the titles of my creations. With a background in painting and wood working, I draw on my expertise to bring dynamic surfaces and textures to life in three-dimensional art.

Every sculpture embarks on a unique journey, shaped by the individual characteristics of the natural pod. This organic individuality results in artwork that is visually compelling and sparks conversations about its title and inspiration. Through my work, I aim to help others see the world differently – by transforming the beauty of nature into art.

The dog days of summer deliver a Paradise playlist of inspired music, from The Florida Orchestra’s magnificent new season, Suncoast Jazz Festival Nov. 21-23, Clearwater Jazz Holiday’s Oct. 16-19 “Back To Our Roots” line-up and spectacular jazz musicians. Tune in and mark your calendars for these great shows and artists.

SIMON LASKY The Tampa-based, Britishborn pianist, composer, arranger, educator, and man about town stirs my soul. If you missed him this summer accompanying Allyson Briggs in The Palladium’s New York Style Jazz or enjoyed his social media songs from performing in London, you can catch him at The Palladium in the fall and Suncoast Jazz Festival where he will perform with Alejandro Arenas (La Lucha) and Allison Nash…his first time performing at the festival. You can catch him in Tampa at Eddie V’s and Ruth Chris Steakhouse. He will perform at The Palladium Sept.27 with composer/bassist Alejandro Arenas in Mixtura – A Multi-Cultural Journey in Sound and Oct. 25 with The Simon Lasky Group. But there’s more! “I’ve been accepted as a Voting Member of The Recording Academy. That means I’ll be voting for the GRAMMYS y’all! The Recording Academy also run the MusiCares charity which helped me a lot after the hurricanes last summer...it’s

nice to give back and be part of advocacy organizations like this,” says Lasky. www.simonlasky.com

IS THE DOG’S TAIL WAGGING YOU?

There Is Great Power In Prioritizing

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” ~ Stephen Covey

We all know that the saying “The tail is wagging the dog” is an idiom we use when we realize that the minutia of something less than important is dominating the moment and our attention. Many would agree that, today, we are allowing our lives to be dominated by things that, in the big picture, don’t truly matter – or, at least, matter less than what does. Many of us are being pummeled by the dog’s tail. When this happens, our priorities are thrown into a tizzy.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of external pursuits – which can include work, hobbies, and the general “busy-ness” of life – and lose sight of what actually matters to us: our relationships, our well-being, and our inner peace. Our priorities often become distorted, with “doing” overshadowing “being.” This imbalance can lead to stress and a lack of fulfillment.

To rebalance and realign with what matters most, we can start by examining our calendar. The aforementioned wisdom found in the quote by Stephen Covey is sage. Mindfully scheduling our priorities is the mark of a wise person.

To identify the activities and commitments that dominate our schedule requires perspective and wisdom. Are they aligned with our core values and what we genuinely love? If not, it may be time for a change. We can begin by setting new priorities today. Easier said than done? Obviously, that’s why countless individuals wander aimlessly, colliding with metaphorical barriers and deriving little significance from their time living in a human skin. Nevertheless, it is well worth the effort to at least examine the value of creating new priorities.

One powerful mindfulness practice is to intentionally create space (schedule) in our calendar for moments of stillness and presence. Even a few hours of “breathing” time each week can make a significant difference in reducing stress and enhancing our overall joy. This intentional pause allows us to reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones, fostering deeper relationships and a greater sense of meaning in life.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to arrive at the finish line (wherever and whatever that is) with a sense of peace and fulfillment, not exhaustion. Mindfulness and conscious scheduling are key tools in achieving this balance. By prioritizing what truly matters, we can cultivate a life rich with joy and meaningful connections … and the dog’s tail will cease wagging us – and finally, we see life doesn’t have to be so “ruff.”
