New Year - New Beginnings - New Ways to Live Life!

New Year’s is a great time for new beginnings. It is especially so for Peter, since he was born on New Year’s Day. In case you are a believer in Astrology, Pete is as Capricorn as they come. Renee is a Leo. Somehow we have managed to spend a lifetime living and working together.

We have been asked the secret and our most frequent reply is “You’re Probably Right.”

Having lived and Worked together as long as we have, we know each other so well, when a disagreement arises we have found it is better to agree than to disagree. Most often the disagreement is a minor item that we later find one or the other was right about, but it never pays to point that out, so, you’re give each other the right to be right at the onset.

“You’re Probably Right.” difuses many potential battles before they start.

If you reserve your disagreements for the really important issues (which seldom arise in a relationship,) life together can be much easier.

It is also a matter of trust. If you can be trusting, and trustworthy in your relationships, it makes life and business much easier.

Once in a while you get burned, but eventually even burns heal and you learn to stay a little farther from the flame the next time.

LETTERS Happy New Year! Regarding former Treasure Island Mayor Maloof's letter in the December Paradise News, about the 6 referenda items that residents of Treasure Island voted on, that regarded height and density: Ms. Maloof stated that the residents were fed false stories and we voted in "fear and panic".

The false assumption was made that the majority of residents were ill informed and, in our "fear and panic", voted down every issue.

What is correct about that statement is yes we voted down every issue.

I would argue that the majority of residents were well informed voters, that we did our homework and came to the conclusion that we did not want to change our height and density. It is troubling that because the voters did not agree with the City and some other residents and non Treasure Island residents like Ms. Maloof, that we were ill-informed.

As far as the City's promotional effort to provide us with "fact-based and verifiable information" it is unconscionable that both sides of this argument weren't presented to the residents by the City. There was also verifiable information that took a different stand than the City's stand. And what makes things even more annoying is that the City spent

our money paying for newspaper ads and flyers that only gave one side of this argument to the residents. There are two sides to every story.

Don't underestimate the intelligence of Treasure Island residents - they were informed, they voted and they made their decision.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 2016 Just back from Madeira Beach 4th of December, your lights all along to Pass-A-grille were fantastic.

The lights at Largo botanical gardens were marvelous and the lighted boat parade at Horan park was out of this world.

Everybody who worked on these projects needs a pat on the back.

We hope everyone in Madeira Beach and Treasure Island a really good Chrismas and New Year. We will see you again in May 2017, our 34th year there.

Party & Pedal: Florida’s first cycleboat arrived in October at Tampa Riverwalk. Known as Kraken, this human-powered 32-foot Catamaran with a large paddlewheel in the back accommodates up to 15 guests. Like the pedal pub bar on wheels, you can party, sip beverages and play your favorite tunes. Kraken debuted in Gulfport, and now departs from the Gulfport Municipal Marina (4630 29th Avenue). Kraken offers public tours (21 and over) and tours that allow children age 13 and older to board. Private charters are available.

Gulfport Merchants Association Announces Grant Recipients: The Gulfport Merchants Association (GMA) announced its selection of recipients for 2017 Community Support Grants. The recipients chosen by the GMA Board of Directors are among non-profit organizations which are either based in Gulfport, or include Gulfport in their service area.

One of the 2017 grant recipients is the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund, providing funding for women’s health and medical needs not covered by insurance. The other grant recipient is Creative Play Preschool which will use grant funding to create an “Edible School Yard” program, described as “an interactive outdoor learning lab” and “mini food forest.”

INDIAN SHORES, INDIAN ROCKS BEACH Birds Win: Seaside Seabird Sanctuary is now officially a charitable organization with 501(c)(3) status. The status designates the organization as a public charity and allows donors to deduct contributions made under the IRS code. “We are thrilled to officially be named a charity and are thankful that the IRS approved our request so quickly. In fact, our attorney said this is the fastest turnaround in his 18 years of working on and submitting these types of applications,” said Andrew von Gontard, President of Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. “This solidifies our status as a successor organization to the previous entity and hopefully instills even more confidence in Seaside Seabird Sanctuary for our supporters and volunteers.”

PINELLAS COUNTY Trade Deal & Dominican Republic: Tampa Bay Export Alliance (TBEA), a cooperative effort of Pinellas County Economic Development, Tampa / Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation & the Pasco Economic Development Council, said today that the companies participating in this months trade mission to the Dominican Republic have projected future sales of approximately $6.8 million as a result of the trip. Thirteen local companies participated in the U.S. Commercial Service's Gold Key Service (GKS) Matchmaker program, which provided customized one-onone meetings with companies in the Dominican Republic. These Gold Key companies conducted approximately 140 meetings with potential clients that resulted in the nearly $6.8 million in actual and expected export sales.

Forward Pinellas: The transportation and land use planning agency for Pinellas County, has new board leadership and several new members going into 2017. By a unanimous vote of the Forward Pinellas Board, County Comm. John Morroni will be serving as the board’s chair, Clearwater Commissioner Doreen Caudell as vice chair, Indian Rocks Beach Commissioner Cookie Kennedy as treasurer, and County Commissioner Dave Eggers as secretary. A professional realtor, Commissioner Morroni has personal experience on the land use side of the Forward Pinellas mission, and served on the Pinellas Planning Council from 2005 on. He joined the Forward Pinellas Board when the planning council merged with the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization in 2014 to form the new organization. Homeless Count: Volunteers are needed for the January 24 annual homeless count. The survey helps identify gaps in services and helps countywide efforts toward ending homelessness. The data collected will help ensure funding is available to provide critical services. To comprehensively cover this very densely populated community, the Point-In-Time Planning Committee has identified the need for more than 350 volunteers and 90 team leads. Graduation Rate Improves: The Pinellas County Schools high school graduation rate increased for the 2015-16 school year, according to information released today by the Florida Department of Education.

The school district’s graduation rate climbed to 80.1 percent, a 1.8% increase over the previous year and an 8.2%increase since 2012-13. The 8.2% increase since 2012-13 is the highest among the seven largest districts and is higher than the state’s 5.1% increase since 2012-13. “We are pleased to see how our strategic initiatives to increase academic progress for students have led to a substantial increase in our graduation rate, especially when we examine our momentum during the last several years,” said superintendent Michael A. Grego. “This is a shared success for all our schools and educators. We are 10

determined to continue our effective strategies and seek new approaches that will continue our upward trend”.

Pinellas: Sunstar FirstCare Ambulance Membership Program Available: Enrollment opened Dec. 1; coverage goes into effect Jan. 1 Pinellas County continues to offer the Sunstar FirstCare Ambulance Membership Program to assist residents with the out-of-pocket expenses associated with ambulance transportation.

The Sunstar FirstCare Ambulance Membership Program is not an insurance plan. It is a Pinellas County government program that works with an individual’s insurance company to cover 100 percent of eligible expenses associated with deductibles and co-payments. The membership plan will also cover 50 percent of the cost for any trips denied by the insurance company. It is estimated that the average cost of a single transport is $707. Annual membership fees are $63 for an individual and $98 for a family. If plan members are uninsured, they receive a 20 percent discount on ambulance transportation services.

This is an average savings of $140 per transport. The family plan covers those related by blood, marriage or adoption who reside in the same household. Call (727) 582-2008 www.pinellascounty.org/firstcare for more information.

by Peter A. Roos When asked recently what is the best new restaurant on the south beaches, it was a surprisingly easy choice. Inspired by two generations of genuine aficionados of food and drink, Selene is an exceptional restaurant.

wner Nick “Nikko” Skiadiotis was already a successful Manhattan restauranteur in 1986 when he stayed at the Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach for the first time. The lifetime restauranteur, who founded Skidders on Gulf Blvd. over 25 years ago, also owns Neptune, a greek/seafood restaurant across from the Casino in nearby Gulfport.

For cheese lovers there’s Spinach Pie and Fennel Rolls with Feta. The Grilled Octopus is the ‘best ever’ according to a number of experienced Greek diners. On the happy hour menu it’s only $7 and enough for several people to taste. There’s nothing over $7 on the happy hour menu.

The Craft Café, next to Earth Origins, is where Nikko’s son Ted spends most of his days. It has been extremely popular, offering organic coffees, gluten‐free baked goods and healthy treats.

“Selene is a Goddess,” says Nikko. “The restaurant was designed to answer the wishes of many local residents and visi‐ tors. They wanted delicious food that they knew was fresh, healthy fare and a pre‐ mium liquor bar in a classy but casual surrounding, with plenty of parking. They wanted the chance to sit outside when the weather is right, but not feel they were in the way of traffic. They wanted a venue where they could be proud to host their family and friends for a special event. The empty Village Inn property just north of Dolphin Village Shopping Center became the perfect canvas for Nikko and Ted’s dream.

Happy Hour from 4-7 finds an elegant ‘cheers’ kind of atmosphere with $4 house wines, wells and craft beers, and domestics $3. The gourmet appetizers at are a bargain at Happy Hour prices. The choice of three spreads with pita points for $6 is a great vegetarian option.

People rave about the food. “We buy fresh fish from local fishermen 6 days a week”, says Nikko. “And fresh, local produce, whenever possible” added Selene GM Jessie English. “Nikko created Selene to be what residents and visitors were ask‐ ing him for. He hired me to ensure his guests were well taken care of, even when he is away. They can also consider me their personal party planner,” said Jessie.

NBA star ‘Marreese Speights’, better known as “Mo Buckets” said the wed‐ ding party for 75 of his hometown friends at Selene this summer, was “the best”.

KUDOS LOEWS DON CESAR DONATES OVER 350 TOYS TO JOHNS HOPKINS ALL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL During its annual Winter Solstice celebration on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 21, the Loews Don CeSar collected more than 350 donated toys and several gift cards for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in downtown St. Petersburg.

More than 500 members of the community attended the free holiday event and filled three large bins with toys.

RCS Food Bank Receives Shipment from Publix’s Food For Sharing

HELPING MOTHER NATURE ONE BAG AT A TIME! Maggie Monfreda is a third grader in the Gulf Beaches Elementary School’s Gifted Program.

Each student in the program is required to plan and execute a community service project.

Maggie had to come up with the idea on her own.

After learning during sea turtle season that turtles can mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, she thought of organizing a beach clean up. She designed a flyer and hung them at her school and recreation center. She invited every adult she knows.

She was very happy with her ability to pull so many people together to do something good for the community. We saw several photos from Maggie's October and November beach clean ups, and coincidentally saw her family in action ourselves in December. She had recruited her aunt and cousins in October. In November, they were joined by some USF students, and in December they were assisted by a woman and her daughter that were on vacation and wanted to help. Kudos to Maggie Monfreda and her family, to Gulf Beaches Elementary School, (and the Paradise Grille at Upham Beach, which just reopened after a major renovation.)

This week Publix delivered 51,327 pounds of food to the RCS Food Bank from their Food for Sharing campaign. Originally the RCS Food Bank was supposed to receive 24 pallets from the campaign, but Alex Thomas, director of RCS Food Bank, was happily surprised when the truck contained 40 pallets instead! The shipment included tuna, mac and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, beef stew, peanut butter, fruit cocktail, rice, canned ham, grape jelly and breakfast bars — enough to provide almost 43,000 meals.

Last year RCS Food Bank provided 2,445,563 meals to those facing hunger in Pinellas County.

In November, the RCS Food Bank served 7,266 individuals including 142,016 pounds of food out of the warehouse and 136,822 pounds of food out of sub-distribution sites.

Hunger Facts: • 1 in 6 Floridians struggle with hunger.

• Food insecurity rate in Pinellas County is 16.2%.

• There were 38,940 children in Pinellas County in 2014 considered food insecure.

Holiday Good Deeds The Gulf Beach Masonic Lodge took part in the Salvation Army Angel Tree program at Tyrone Mall. The Angel Tree program is designed to get holiday gifts to needy children in the community.

Over nineteen members of Gulf Beach Masonic Lodge took turns manning the Angel Tree booth.

Employees of the Loews Don CeSar dropped off the gifts at the hospital following the event to an elated staff.

The toys will be given to sick children as part of the hospital’s All Kids Wonderland, an event that allows family members to select donated gifts from a faux storefront. The toys are distributed to the hospital’s child residents on Christmas Day to spread holiday cheer and provide a sense of normalcy.

The hotel’s donation is part of the Loews Hotels Good Neighbor Policy, the hospitality industry’s first comprehensive community outreach program, which addresses a variety of issues, such as hunger relief, literacy rates and green practices.

Jackie Yost: Still Running at 88 Sports, fitness and athletic competition have defined Jackie Yost’s life since childhood. With a degree in physical education from University of North Carolina, Yost has worked as a recreation director, athletic director, and coach for swimming, baseball, tennis, softball, basketball and other sports. In addition, she taught health, science and physical education.

In 1952 Jackie married Larry, a college swimmer at NC State. Sixty five years later, Jackie – age 88 and Larry – age 86 are still athletes and avid competitors. Their love of and dedication to fitness has been passed on to their three children – all of whom are also dedicated athletes. Sunset Beach, Treasure Island residents for over 20 years, the Yost clan is truly an athletic family – participating in triathlons, marathons, running events, cycling, swimming, golf, and tennis.

Jackie’s awards and accomplishments are nothing short of incredible. She has been consistently ranked first or second in her age group by USA Triathlon. She has represented Team USA at the World Championships. She has won her age group at the DisneyWorld Half Marathon, the Gasparilla 15K, St. Anthony’s Olympic Distance Triathlon, and the DisneyWorld Minnie Marathon 15K to name but a few.

At the age of 78, Jackie was second at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. She was a USA TRIATHLON Age Group ALL AMERICAN ten times.

At the age of 88, Jackie’s training regimen is extraordinary.

Each day she trains in one or more disciplines (swimming, cycling, running). She does track workouts and speed work, open water and pool swims.

Multiple times a week she throws in a round of golf just to rest and relax. She has the distinction of having scored two holes in one!

Athletics continues to be a family endeavor for Jackie. She and husband Larry and daughter Joy competed as a relay team in the Half Ironman in New Orleans, while daughter Cindy did the full race.

Each year Jackie, daughter Joy and son-in-law Steve (Joy’s husband) compete as a relay team for the Olympic Distance St. Anthony’s Triathlon, while husband Larry does the full event and son Steve and his wife Debbie form a relay team.

With a combined age of 174 years, Jackie and Larry Yost are the oldest married couple actively competing in triathlons.

Jackie is a true inspiration. Her positive impacts on the lives she has touched and the sport of triathlon that she loves are immeasurable.

he City Commission has $35,000 in the current budget and put the planning, organizing and supervision in the hands of Recreation Director Jennifer McMahon and the Recreation Advisory Board. With Steve Stewart as Chair and Austin Piazza as Vice Chair, other members are Roberta Rhodes, Danielle Micklitsch and Scott Seubert. Also helping with the project is former SPB Commissioner Greg Premer.

Mayor Deborah Schechner told Paradise News, “Jennifer McMahon, her staff and our Recreation Advisory Board do an outstanding job for St. Pete Beach. I appreciate their creativity in establishing traditional yet innovative ways to celebrate our 60th Anniversary with exciting activities that will appeal to all residents.”

LOCAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS - MARCH 14th, 2017 Ever an interesting political environment, the 2017 St. Pete Beach mayors race is proving to be no exception. When Mayor Maria Lowe resigned last summer to join her husband and son on their move to Normandy, the commission selected frequent commission critic Deborah Schechner, out of a field of ten applicants. One of the conditions of her selection was her promise that she would not run for the Mayor’s position in March, as it would give her an unfair advantage to run as an incumbant.

Melinda Pletcher, whose vote for Schechner gave her the appointment, said she never would have voted for her had she remembered she had sued the city, especially since the suit was still active. Mayor Schechner has not commented on her broken promise to the commission.

Alan Johnson is the thinking voter’s choice for mayor. A retired engineer who spent 35 years at General Electric. Al has been active as Chairman of the city's Finance and Budget Review Committee and previously served on the city's Recreation Advisory Committee.

Although this is Al’s first attempt at an elected position in the city, he has been a longtime

volunteer and supporter of many city functions. He was founder along with his late wife Wendy Johnson of Motion Sports Management and the St. Pete Beach Classic Race which brings out 2,000+ runners and more than 200 community volunteers each January. Works hand in hand with Sheriffs, city hoteliers, particularly the Sirata resort.

If anyone can understand the city’s economic challenges, continue to help mend the rift that exists between some residents and redevelopment interests to help propel the community forward, it’s Al Johnson.

A third candidate, John-Michael Fleig, is another frequent vocal attendee at city commission meetings. Founder and partner of the Baywaters Inn and the Rita-Terese property Management Agency, Fleig says he has the "pulse of the overall public" in the city, and that his property management experience has taught him the importance of planning. He has not run for office in St. Pete Beach before, but was a republican candidate in the 2nd Congressional District of Maryland in 1990, 1994 & 1998. He withdrew after pleading guilty in a plea bargain to being an accessory after the fact to murder, according to 1997-98 articles from the Baltimore Sun that are available online. Fleig also was announced as a 2014 Republican candidate

seeking to represent the 13th Congressional District of Florida but did not qualify to run in the special election by the November 19, 2013 filing deadline.

A press release dated Dec. 24th, from politicalspitfir@aol.com, attributed to Fleig mostly assailed Mayor Schechner for her broken promise to the commission. While he complains she shouldn’t be allowed to run because ‘rules are rules’, it is not clear whether Fleig has even read the rules in the candidate’s handbook that he had to swear he read and understood when he registered to run for office. Neither his recent “Press Release” nor a flyer left at our door about his campaign included the necessary political small print, absence of which is grounds for fines or worse if a complaint were filed.

District 2 Commissioner Rick Falkenstein & District 4 Commissioner Melinda Pletcher retained their seats unopposed. ______________________ Christine Anne Brown and Linda Bailey are running for Gulfport Council Seat for Ward 2. Ward 4 is more competitive with 4 contenders: Bobby L. Reynolds, Michael Fridovich Richard Fried and Ernest Stone.

My best real estate advice to you is to find the actual value of your property now and use it as a basis to decide what to do with this asset or liability. Appraisers and the internet are often wrong because of limited information about your home and motivation.

When you get current information about what today’s buyers CAN PAY, DID PAY or REFUSED TO PAY for a property like yours, you are in control of your pricing decision. Then you can decide to buy, sell, rent, remodel, invest or stay. Many of us price property according to what we want or need without having a clue about real value. Here are 3 steps for you to take or direct your agent to take. Compare features, advantages and benefits and select 15 properties like yours.

Step 1. Find at least 5 current listings like yours (what buyers CAN PAY).

Step 2. Find 5 sold homes like yours (what buyers DID PAY).

Step 3. Find 5 expired or withdrawn listings (what buyers REFUSED TO PAY).

Now average the prices in the 3 categories. Let’s say that the Can Pays average $600,000, Did Pays $550,000 and Refused to Pays $700,000.

You then know that if you price it at $600,000 buyers will look at it but probably offer you $550,000. You also notice that if you price it above $700,000 you may be just wasting your time selling, because few buyers will even come to look. Once you know the average prices in each of the 3 steps you can revise the numbers as the market changes. I know this sounds complicated but it’s “critical” to do before you decide to sell. Who do Real Estate Agents Represent?

by Tom Brodersen, Esq. Get Real about Property! Travels through Real Estate Law It used to be that listing agents always represented Sellers, in the fullest legal sense. The problem was, under the structure of most Multiple Listing Systems (MLS), the cooperating agent, who drives Buyers around in his or her car all day (maybe even buying them lunch to win their loyalty, or beers at the end of the day) also represented the Seller (under what was called a sub-agency agreement, which was triggered by an agent showing properties listed in the MLS).

The Buyers often didn’t understand that.

It is true that some agents executed special agreements to be Buyers agents exclusively, but that wasn’t typically the case.

In recent years, Florida law has changed and all agents are presumed to be what is called “transaction brokers,” unless the paperwork clearly says differently.

Transaction brokers (or agents) don’t

truly represent anyone and as some would (inartfully) say, they “represent the deal.” What does that mean? Do they really only represent themselves?

It’s a fair question.

The truth is, there is a list of seven specific duties, all of which add up to full representation, but in the case of a transaction broker, three of those duties are reduced or eliminated. They are confidentiality (for example, does the agent tell the Seller that the Buyer could afford or is willing to pay more for the property than is being offered, if necessary), disclosure (everyone is entitled to full disclosure as to property condition and value, but not necessarily information about the parties bargaining position), and loyalty.

I don’t think this framework is a good idea, because agents charge the same, but give the public less as transaction brokers. And just try to explain to people

that you can’t give them your undivided loyalty. It’s a real hard sell. However, that’s up to brokers and their business strategy, and, in all fairness, this all doesn’t really add up to much practical difference to Buyers and Sellers, in most cases.

Sometimes, however, it counts for a lot.

When one party has little or no experience with buying and selling real estate, they need more help, maybe a lot more help. They should be fully represented, but they need to ask for it very clearly, or they probably won’t get it.

If you don’t feel up to reading (and able to understand) every line of every document put in front of you, you should probably talk to a real estate lawyer.

Next month we’ll talk about a recent horror story caused by exactly these considerations.

St. Bartholomew’s Church History Tour of Oldest Church Structure in Pinellas County

By Jerry Knight First located on 22 nd Avenue S., St Bartholomew’s board & batten Florida Gothic structure was built by a handful of pioneers in 1887. Though it has been enlarged five times, the original building has been incorporated into the successive structures, and it remains the center of the present sanctuary, 130 years later.

Jerry Knight, a 50-year church member and local historian, leads tours of the historic building on Saturday, January 14th at 11am and again on the second Saturday of February and March.

Jerry recounts the early days of the church and community, the physical move of the church to its present location in the late 1960’s, and construction of the stained glass windows. There is no charge for the history tour, but participation is limited.

ixteen years before the incorporation of Saint Petersburg as a city, a small group of friends and neighbors met to form an Episcopal Church.

In April, 1887, before the first train arrived and the first building lots were plotted, one of the founding families, Dr. and Mrs. John Abercrombie, donated land for a church and cemetery. The tiny St. Bartholomew’s congregation solicited donations from family and friends in England and America, presented plays and hosted bazaars, and raised $673 to pay for the materials to build the church.

Even before the building was completed, the church helped found two other local missions referred to as “Disston”, near 49th Street S., and “Bayou”, later called “Chapel of the Holy Spirit”, in what was to become downtown St. Petersburg. The Disston mission did

not survive the year, but Chapel of the Holy Spirit did and it was the precursor to St. Peters Cathedral.

The church was shuttered in 1910, as a majority of the congregation had moved closer to the downtown area, but in 1924, a number of former parishioners met to plan the re-opening of the church. So successful was this undertaking that the original Church was enlarged to make room for a choir, and a rectory was built at a cost of $7,000.

Sara Hall loaned St. Bartholomew’s the funds to permit construction, and on her death, the debt was cancelled.

Membership fluctuated little until the mid-1940’s when another financial crisis almost shuttered the church again.

After a stormy Vestry meeting, the decision was made not only to keep the church open, but to canvas the members to expand the church again. The beautiful stained glass windows, the round Rose window and the two flanking Sower windows were gifted during that time.

The congregation grew to its largest in 1959 with 762 communicants, and the building had been enlarged several times to accommodate them. A decade later, The New Hope Baptist Church offered to purchase the property, and the Vestry elected to sell the grounds and physically move the church, to land with better exposure on 34th Street S. In 1969, the building was carefully disassembled, moved, and rebuilt, adding insulation and welcomed air conditioning to the structure. Construction of a parish hall, education building, and an enclosed courtyard followed.

Time to Build Your NEW Florida Home is Now!

It’s funny how I see many of the same customers coming through my model home every few months, and each time they “get closer” to making that decision to build a new Florida home. Sure they are going to have to switch their investment monies from the stock market to Florida real estate, but the reward is a new very well designed home, raised above the flood plain to eliminate the threat of hurricanes, with energy efficient, hurricane windows & doors, with new 2017 designs and floor plans that are far superior to the 60 year old housing stock on the waterfront lots today. Most probably the new Florida home investment will offer a higher return to those customers for those investment dollars.

The problem is the wait! I wish I could wave the magic wand and stop inflation, but of course, that’s not the case. Building costs rise every year, and it’s frustrating for customers to bring back a 6 month old brochure with

pricing on one of our homes, and then see the new higher prices on the same model when they return. “If only I bought last year…” I hear it every day!

Builders can’t return to yesterday’s pricing, but customers can make that decision to bite the bullet and purchase a new Florida home now and not pay the higher price next year. For those customers that presently own a waterfront home on the intercoastal, the land value will continue to rise, but their home itself built below the flood plain is not increasing in value, and most are not marketable for sale except for buyers that will tear down the old structure and build new. I Co-Broke with Realtors all around Pinellas County and they all tell me their listings on the water are flat to non-existent. Many Realtors are bringing their clients to our model to see what is available with new home construction today. I’ll be introducing an exciting new model in the February issue of Paradise News that

is now under construction. I’ll have Open Houses for existing home replacement customers, and snowbirds that have finally decided that the Sunshine state is a great place to live, or Realtors that want to see an alternative that they can offer their customers.

Six months ago, my station wagon developed the first transmission trouble of its life, with over 250,000 miles on the odometer. Normally an ailment like that might mark the end of a car’s useful life, but I have not found another to do the job that wagon performs for us, so I was never happier to have a repair shop I could depend on. Steve Johnson, Tom’s Master technician, loves the older Benz’s and personally disassembled my transmission on the stainless steel transmission table in their spotless

work-shop. It took most of a week for them to get the internal transmission parts needed (as some parts had to come from Germany), but Steve got the old girl back together and running better than when I first acquired it with less than half its current mileage. Steve told me when I picked it up to let him know when I am ready to sell her, as he would love to buy that car.

Order Healthy: While you don’t want to be too pesky or demanding, you can request that items be cooked a certain way, grilled instead of fried for example. Why? Researchers affiliated with the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who ate fried food at least once per week had a greater risk of both type 2 diabetes and heart disease than those who avoid fried foods, and that their risk increased with each additional fried meal they consumed.

Reduce Portions: Eat only half the meal and take the rest home. You can also ask if there is an appetizer size portion of your favorite entrée. Why? The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says food portions at restaurants have doubled or tripled over the last 20 years.

French was an Old Northeast St. Petersburg native with a graceful, melodic style and regarded as one of the most accomplished artists in the world of modern dance.

She earned her BFA from NYC’s acclaimed Juilliard School and brings fifteen years of dance experience back to St. Pete.

A founding member of the St. Petersburg Dance Alliance, she always wanted to write music and dance to it and at age 12, danced in a summer program at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.

French graduated from the Pinnellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High and migrated to a modern dance company, dancing with the Buglisi Dance Theater for fifteen years. She’s worked with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre as well as serving as a faculty member at George Mason University, Juilliard and is currently on faculty at St. Petersburg College.

French brings dance off the stage to new audiences, including a fall event hosted by the St. Petersburg Dance Alliance at Green Bench Brewery. Dance on Film, a series of four films, was made by local choreographers like her.

Shedding its former name, image and ownership, the “new” Seaside Seabird Sanctuary (SSS) will have a formal grand opening in early 2017

Speaking for the new SSS, Andrew von Gontard, President and Executive Director, recently told loyal supporters, “We are de‐ lighted to announce a new path forward for our sanctuary! As of September 1, 2016, we are a completely new organization, now known as Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, formerly Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary.

“With experienced management, a new board, and leadership from the Busch von Gontard family, who possess a long history of wildlife conservation, we look forward to earning your continued support as we put avian wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and environmental edu‐ cation at the forefront of our mission.”

Gayton recently took Paradise News on a tour of the ongoing refurbishing of the Sanctuary, introducing other staff along the way.

Diane Liggieri is the long‐time Gift Shop Manager and also fills the vital roles of Volunteer Coordinator and answers all Bird Rescue calls with Jackie Walter as Assistant.

“We’re actively recruiting new volunteers to add to our current dozen dedicated weekly rotation,” Diane notes. “Included are rescuers, visitor greeters, bird caregivers, gift shop workers and fundraisers.

Prospective volunteers should call the Gift Shop at 727-391-6211.” Typical of dedicated volunteers is Dylan Kahn, who was cleaning one of the bird pools on his regular weekly shift, and is a long‐time Audubon steward.

Dani told Paradise News, “We’ve ended captive breeding by segregating the male and female pelicans. Young pelicans from birth can’t be continually around people as they can never be released into the wild. We are releasing a handful of our in‐ jured and rehabbed birds every few weeks, typically on Tuesday. We’re also no longer feeding wild bird visitors as our new enclosure netting is doing a great job of keeping them away and significantly lowering our food costs. Our white pelicans are doing well, including our patriarch George, a favorite of visiting kids with school groups.”

Eddie showed off the refurbished Education Center, which is actively involved in getting school trips again, with more bookings already set for the new year. “We were involved in the Great American Teach‐In this past fall,” he notes, “and are getting more home‐schooled kids as well as classes from both public and private schools.”

“In addition to the new netting covering all the bird pens, the Sanctuary has refurbished the outdoor rehab pens for injured birds, and an arborist is coming soon to trim back and take care of all our

trees. We’re also set to completely re‐do the outdoor deck that overlooks the beach and Gulf, and is an ideal setting for birthdays, engagement parties, weddings and corporate events.”

“Our permanent resident birds on display include a Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Red Shouldered Hawk and Isis (Goddess of Nature) our Red‐Tailed Hawk, here since 1990 and believed to be the oldest in captivity. Nujay, our Blue Jay, does his “Meow” on cue (sometimes) and has his own YouTube video.”

Call to Artists: Superheroes on Parade is a whimsical, dog-centered art affair inspiring the community with its menagerie of life-size dog sculptures created by local artist and sculptor, Scott Moore. Call for hand painting by local artists for the Superheroes on parade sculptures to benefit Southeastern Guide Dogs. $400 stipend. Planned events include placing 50 painted dog-incape sculptures around town and an online contest where the community votes for their favorites and an awards celebration.

ARTS NEWS Mahaffey Theater: Big3 Entertainment, which manages the Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater, has expanded its programming team with the addition of veteran New York talent booker and promoter Harlan Halper.

Halper has been working with Big3 since 2011, bringing standup comedy to The Mahaffey and The Palladium Theater. As Vice President of Programming, his role now expands to include all genres of the performing arts. His years of experience include operations management, booking, promoting and talent buying for theaters and performing arts venues around the country. “The Mahaffey is an absolutely gorgeous building, and needs to be experienced by locals, as well as visitors to this dynamic community," Halper said.

"And we want more and more artists, regardless of the genre of entertainment, to experience how amazing The Mahaffey is, how they’re taken care of, and how we put on and present shows.”

www.HubbardsMarina.com Inshore- Sheepshead bite is hot around the docks, pilings, and bridge fenders of Johns Pass and surrounding areas. They love cut oyster, barnacles, fiddle crabs or small pieces of shelled shrimps on a 2ot hook with 20lb floro for leader. You can add a small split shot if the current requires it, but if you can get away with a free lined bait that is best, because it looks more natural. The black drum bite is still steady but the heavy Sheepshead activity is typically stopping your baits before they hit bottom. The trout, snook & redfish can be found up in the shallows this time of year.

As the water cools and the tides get lower, these fish, normally found in deeper water grass beds in the summer, come into the shallower waters where the dark bay mud holds the heat and where the sun can penetrate the shallow waters more easily to stay warmer. Especially behind these occasional fronts you can find these guys tucked up in the back waters and bayous. Don’t forget the mullet run, as these large schools of fish flush out of the back waters the big snook and reds will follow the fish to ambush the stragglers and smaller fish. If you spot a school, work your baits from the middle of the school to the back edges and hold on tight.

Near shore - The ten-hour all day came in from the last all day Thursday trip for the year with 40 keeper hogfish, a new record.

The approaching front had the hogfish foaming and ready to chew, we also caught some red grouper and tons of grey snapper, porgies, and sea bass too!

The half-day trips are also doing well on the snapper and a few hogs here and there but the big news are the private charters.

This past week’s private charter trips have done exceptionally well on the hogfish, gags and red grouper plus plenty of lane snapper too. The red grouper bite seems to be out in the deeper near shore waters while the gags are spread throughout the near shore waters in spread out areas, meaning only a few at each ledge.

We haven’t seen them group up really thick in the near shore waters this year like they have been offshore.

Offshore - The grouper bite this past week was some of the best we have seen in months! The latest 12 hour extreme aboard the Flying HUB 2 caught over 40 keeper grouper with big gags, plentiful fat red grouper, and also nice scamp grouper too with some big mangroves, yellowtail and lane snapper too!

The tuna bite out there is heating up ironically as the water cools.

The kingfish are still hanging in the pockets of warmer water.

22,106 Feet of Fishing Line!

The 23rd Annual Fishing Line Cleanup, organized by Tampa Bay Watch and Audubon Florida and sponsored by Sea World Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and Restore America’s Estuaries, was a great success.

Fifty-three volunteers cleaned 44 different sites around Tampa Bay and along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. They removed an estimated 22,106 feet of fishing line and 225 hooks from bird nesting islands & mangrove shorelines. Unfortunately, 52 birds were found to have died because they were entangled in line were found during the cleanup.

Volunteers were able to rescue two pelicans that were found trapped by fishing line in the mangroves. Tampa Bay Watch and Audubon Florida strive to educate anglers to reduce improper disposal of line and to teach fishermen how to release birds accidently caught, with a goal to decrease the amount of fishing line and reduce the number of entangled birds each year.

The cleanup took place throughout the week of Saturday, September 24 - Sunday, October 2, 2016. Volunteers with boats removed tangled line from mangroves and shorelines of assigned bird nesting islands.

Advanced registration on tampabaywatch.org allowed captains and their volunteer crews to remove fishing line from protected bird colonies that otherwise are off-limits to the public. This cleanup, scheduled in the fall when most birds are not nesting, effectively removes fishing line from Tampa Bay and reduces the threat of entanglement for coastal birds and also other marine animals.

Abandoned fishing line is a significant mortality factor in bird colonies.

Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists have identified fishing line as the major cause of mortality for adult Brown Pelicans. “Florida’s coastal birds face increasing pressures from habitat loss, human disturbance, and predation; removing fishing line is an easy way to increase their chances of survival,” said Audubon Florida Sanctuary Manager Mark Rachal. “Pelicans, egrets, herons and other iconic coastal birds need our help. We thank our captains and crews who participated in the 23rd Annual Fishing Line Cleanup and made a difference for Tampa Bay’s wildlife.”

“It’s great to be able to get the community involved in an event to help prevent wildlife entanglements, while also raising awareness about the importance of responsible fishing practices. Florida’s History is all about Seafood!

by Julian Fant While growing up in old St. Augustine, on the northeast Florida coast, one of my most vivid memories is of the wonderful fresh seafood we enjoyed.

Fish, both fresh and saltwater species were plentiful in the surf, bays and inlets, as well as in the many fresh water creeks, lakes and the mile-wide St. John's River, some 20 miles to the west.

One of the most memorable fishing industries in the Ancient City, however, was the huge fleet of shrimp trawlers which played a major role in the city's economy. Several of my high school classmates were from the Sarris family, a Greek

colony of outstanding boat builders who launched hundreds of the very durable wooden craft over the years.

These were gradually replaced with fiberglass shrimp trawlers, shrimp gradually disappeared and the large fleets of "shrimp boats" sailed into eternity.

Each morning, several hundred of these very sturdy wooden trawlers would sail out of St. Augustine inlet and return in the evening, having netted hundreds of pounds of large shrimp. Residents could go to the processing facilities west of the city, and buy the fresh shrimp right off the boats.
