PUBLISHERS MESSAGE ADOPT AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE ALL YEAR LONG It is November, America’s traditional time of Thanksgiving. The fourth Thursday of November falls on the 24th this year. You can find an excellent history of the holiday on www.History.com. Rather than just a day of giving thanks, we have, in this column, often proposed that the entire month of November be one in which we try to focus on being appreciative of all we have. This month we are proposing something really radical. Why not try adopting an “attitude of gratitude” for an entire year? You can be thankful your ancestors left Ukraine, Crimea, Iran, South or Central America, even England or wherever, and that you have been able to live in relative freedom and peace. Even if you lived in Ft. Myers Beach, you can be thankful you survived and that others have your back. When was the last time you mailed someone a thank you note? It is really amazing what can happen to you and those around you when you consciously show your gratitude for things you generally take for granted. “A direct connection exists between an “attitude of gratitude” and a person’s mental and physical well-being,” according to an article in Psychology Today. Imagine, you could overcome a lot of the anxiety you are feeling and improve your physical well-being just by counting your blessings and telling people that help you that you appreciate them. Start today and see how it feels.

by Michael Moses I often hear at the dog park, Paradise Grille and even here at the Centre, “non-Florida folks” wishing they could access Florida’s high quality Medicinal Marijuana. Surprise! They can. Anyone from the USA, Canada, South America, and Europe and beyond can legally access Florida Cannabis provided they meet a few simple requirements. Even your out-of-state college student might qualify if he or she visits enough. Applicants need to provide:

Snowbirds LOVE their Florida Medical Marijuana Cards

• A Florida Driver’s License or Fl State ID. If not, then... Any two of these items will work for part-time Floridians. • A deed, mortgage, mortgage statement or payment booklet or residential rental or lease agreement. • One proof of residential address from a parent, step-parent, legal guardian or roommate with letter stating that the seasonal resident does reside with him or her. The following not more than two months old: • A utility hookup or work order • A utility bill (internet doesn’t count) • Mail from a financial institution, including checking, savings, or investment account statements • Mail from a federal, state, county, or municipal government agency Many seasonal residents can meet these requirements easily and Triverde Health can assist as need be. Florida card holders who travel should know the Florida Medical card is accepted in 10 other states: Arkansas, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Utah. Call Triverde Health at 727-322-4588 for info or an appointment.

TIDBITS GULFPORT The Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce (GMC) suggests local shoppers start saving receipts from GMC member businesses to enter an amazing raffle in December. “Shopping local is incredibly important, especially during the holiday season. GMC encourages residents and visitors to explore the unique finds in its creative community this holiday season,” says GMC prez Barbara Banno. “It’s a magical time in our whimsical town. Shoppers tell me all the time – there’s no place like Gulfport. Our member businesses sell the kind of distinctive products and services that make gift recipients feel special. Shopping isn’t a chore in Gulfport. It’s a treasure hunt!”

To find GMC members, consult the directory at www.visitgulfportflorida.com. Each transaction with a GMC member will qualify for a raffle entry. The more frequently customers buy, the more entries they receive. Save your receipts and bring them to the IndieFaire on Gulfport Blvd Block Party on Dec. 17th. You will get an equal number of entries to win gifts donated by area businesses. Winners will be drawn on Dec. 17th at 7pm in front of the GMC Welcome Center, 3101 Beach Blvd. S. in Gulfport, 33707. Needn’t be present to win. 8

He was particularly passionate about economic education for young people. WUSF’s “All Night Jazz,” a fixture in the central Florida music scene since 1966, has ended. Program co-founders and Professors Emeritus Gary Mormino, Ph.D. and Raymond Arsenault, Ph.D. were welcomed by the program’s director, Christopher Meindl, Ph.D., and shared the program’s history. St. Petersburg City Council voted unanimously to ban the smoking of cigarettes and vapes at the city’s parks and beaches. A new state law leaves it up to cities and counties to decide if they want to enforce a smoking ban. Several citizens spoke out during the council meeting on why they felt the ordinance should be enforced in St. Pete. The director of Florida Conservation for Ocean Conservancy says making this decision will have a positive impact on marine life and the environment. What that actually means for the Gulf beaches is very little. St. Petersburg owns the parking and beachfront across from Waffle House in Treasure Island, but little else on the beaches. VENICE

Tampa International Airport and Virgin Atlantic will celebrate the inaugural flight of the airline’s new year-round service to London’s hub airport, London Heathrow (LHR), next week. This event marks the start of a major international route with a premium carrier for the Tampa Bay region. The new nonstop flights will feature Virgin Atlantic’s new Airbus A330-900neo, the first of 16 Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft to be put into service by the London-based carrier. This is the first time TPA is offering nonstop service to Heathrow, marking a significant moment for Tampa Bay’s growing prominence as an international destination. Heathrow is TPA’s largest unserved market in Europe. Initial four flights/week increase to daily flights year-round on Nov. 28. The Airbus A330-900neo is the latest addition to Virgin Atlantic’s fleet and is designed to provide a premium, personalized experience for every single customer. The A330neo features Virgin Atlantic’s latest generation Upper Class cabin, including its iconic social space and innovative Retreat Suite. In 2019, Virgin Atlantic became the first U.K. airline to announce a firm order for up to 16 Airbus A330neos, reaffirming its commitment to flying the cleanest, greenest fleet in the sky.

In separate news, the Corey Sunday Market is no longer sponsored by CABA, to whom they have paid around $50,000 in fees in the past few years. When CABA did not fulfill their contractual obligations and lied to Tampa Bay Markets, the city of St. Pete Beach gave Tampa Bay Markets the right to operate the market without CABA’s blessing. Sovereign Boat Club was founded in 2019 for Floridians who want a first class boating experience – without the high cost of ownership. They keep their local boats at Maximo Marina, the Harborage, and Port 32 in Tierra Verde, where they are convenient to all of our local readers, are protected, and close to Boca Ciega Bay, the Intracoastal and the Gulf of Mexico.

There’s No High Cost to Buy – Boat prices have gone up 10% in the past year. Boat Clubs cost a small fraction. Borrowing Cost Uncertainty – Access to easy, cheap money for financing purchases like homes, cars and boats appears to be ending as interest rates rise.

Asset Depreciation – An industry rule of thumb is that the value of a new boat drops 25% upon delivery and it will be worth 50% of the purchase price after four to five years of use. Time Needed to Manage – The time for an owner to manage and maintain a boat can easily exceed the time spent on the boat for pleasure. What do you charge an hour for your time? Annual Operating

Expenses Going Up – Limited slip availability, fewer tradesmen to do maintenance and insurance claims from hurricanes have raised expenses significantly.

Before you take a step toward boat ownership, check out Sovereign Boat Club at www.sovereignboatclub.com. Email sales@sovereignboatclub.com or call Greg Sweeney at 727-200-3474 for answers to any of your questions. SPIRITS By Nanette Wiser

Sea Salt St. Pete

HOSTESS GIFTS ‘Tis the season for holiday parties, so eschew the flowers and bring a bottle as a hostess gift, one for tasting at the party and one for the host to tipple at leisure. PN suggests award winning craft brews, bubbly (Mermosa started here), local spirits (St. Pete Distillery, Kozuba) and independent purveyors (Hawthorne Bottle Shop, Try Wine, Norman’s Liquor & Bottle Shop, Cellar Masters, American Spirits). Total Wine, ABC Liquors and Leukens will feature fantastic gift sets as usual. HOME IMPROVEMENT

By Nanette Wiser

‘Tis the season to be jolly, from planning your exterior holiday decorations to prepping your home for cold weather visitors and parties. Warm up your walls in time for the holiday decorating and entertaining with this season’s it colors: Terra Rosa (a mix of clay and pink) or Canyon Ridge (a blushy coral color), inspired by nature like last year’s sage greens, but taking its cue from desert sunsets. Black and white palettes and motifs or all-white rooms still hold their place as top design choices.

yellow, or burnt sienna that pair naturally with a tan sofa. A vintage lamp, a tufted ottoman, birds and botanical wallpaper, or velvet fringe pillows add sass with class. You can also embrace this season’s pop-culture inspired designs such as adding pale pinks and bedazzled accessories (Barbiecore from the new movie), crystal chandeliers, decorative molding and Regency pieces (Bridgerton) or cottage chic, such as distressed-painted accent furniture or botanical motifs.

If you’re blah about beige, but not ready to replace that brown leather couch, consider adding pillows, throws and other accents in autumn colors such as deep red, mustard

Lucky for Paradisers, we live outdoors this time of year. Warm up that patio with a firepit or outdoor fireplace and add Solar or LED lights, especially thematic string lights

(flamingos, Christmas) to ward off darkness @5pm. Look for weatherproof furnishings made from powder-coated steel, teak, and polyresin wicker, accented by holiday pillows and seasonal scented candles (sugar cookie, apple cinnamon). Set up your bar cart with a zazzy punch and serve a pot of chili or hearty soup outside, followed by s’mores cooked over your firepit and a rousing game of beer pong, Jenga or Password. At Thanksgiving, plan a dessert buffet outside. Decorate a small living Christmas tree or conifer with simple, weatherproof, non-breakable ornaments and fire up Siri for some caroling. LIVE LIFE BETTER By Nanette Wiser

FIND FRIENDS In 1990, only 3% of Americans said they had no close friends; in 2021, nearly 12 percent said the same. Loneliness is an epidemic but it’s curable. From meet-ups to clubs, there are 1,001 ways to develop a friendship, which can boost your happiness and reduce your stress. To find people with similar interests, get off social media and mingle over darts, bowling, birding, hiking, photography, a crafts class, art show, theater, volunteering or book club. Marisa Franco, a psychologist who studies friendship and author of Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make – and Keep – Friends, offers sage advice. “The more you can show people you like and value them, the better. Research shows that even texting a friend can be meaningful.” Some tips for making friends? Be a good listener, do a small favor, start a conversation, show interest in their ideas, don’t be afraid to meet new people and keep it going with small gestures, from a card to a call. Even better, share a meal and giggle over the ultimate friendship manuals: Golden Girls, Friends, Girlfriends and Sex and the City. GET FIT Tai Chi can help spiritually as well as physically, especially balance training, an important skill that impacts longevity and quality of life beginning at age 40. According to the New York Times, a June study in Brazil found that 20 percent of the 1,700 older adults tested couldn’t balance on one leg for 10 seconds or more and was associated with a twofold risk of death from any cause within 10 years. Initially, Tai Chi was practiced as a fighting form, emphasizing strength, balance, flexibility, and speed. Through time it has evolved into a soft, slow, and gentle form of exercise which can be practiced by people of all ages. Find classes at neighborhood rec centers, the Y, local gyms both indoors and al fresco. We like Tai Chi Easy for Life, which conducts classes at OLLI Eckerd and St. Pete Beach. www.taichieasyforlife.com

Local health and wellness treatment center Regenesis is committed to offering patient-centered orthopedic and whole health wellness care. Regenesis Orthopedics was founded as an orthopedics practice while the other side of the business functions under Regenesis Life as a medical spa. Together, Regenesis provides services through surgical and non-surgical orthopedic solutions, such as joint replacement and tissue repair surgeries, as well as hormone replacement, IV infusion therapy and weight loss management.

“Great environment and very attentive staff. Dr. Ragsdell takes his time to explain everything in human terms (not all medical jargon) and takes time to listen and answer questions. No rush, no clock ticking, just attention and care… The entire staff is friendly and attentive.” - J.C. very treatment and procedure at Regenesis are tailored to the individual patient’s needs, allowing Matthew Ragsdell, DO, to listen to patients’ concerns, understand their needs and then apply that information when formulating an individualized treatment course. Because the practice offers such a wide range of treatments, patients can manage the entire recovery process, whether from illness or chronic condition, all in one convenient location. As a double board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with 20 years experience, Dr. Ragsdell’s philosophy is patient wellness first. It is his priority to provide treatments through regenerative modalities, weight loss, and hormone optimization first, avoiding unnecessary surgery. When surgery is needed to correct severe orthopedic issues, Dr. Ragsdell’s specialty training and experience in minimally invasive surgery is critical in promoting fast, effective healing. One of the most common instigating factors in orthopedic issues, like soft tissue damage and osteoarthritis, is obesity. Although there is no single ideal weight, any weight above an individual’s own natural baseline weight causes strain on hip and knee joints. Each single pound of body weight places between four and six pounds of pressure on each knee joint. Losing as little as 10 percent of total body weight can reduce the risk of developing arthritis in joints that are not yet affected.

The Emsella Chair offers a non-surgical way to address incontinence.

Understanding the critical connection between orthopedics and weight, Regenesis Life offers several options to improve wellness and reduce weight. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement therapy for both men and women uses natural compounds derived from plants, which are similar to those produced by the human body. Bioidentical hormones can restore optimal hormone levels and lead to increased energy and vitality, weight loss, and stronger bones and muscles. Dr. Ragsdell

Dr. Ragsdell is continually working to find the most effective and healthy ways of reducing pain, strain, and possible injury in his patients. While researching and evaluating different methods of weight loss management he learned about Emsculpt NEO, a non-invasive targeted procedure that works with the body’s muscles to improve muscle tone and reduce fat. Using radio frequency and high-intensity electromagnetic energies, Emsculpt NEO builds muscles by causing muscle contractions that cannot be replicated through exercise alone. At the same time, fat cells are being melted, broken down and turned into waste, which will eventually leave the body naturally. Emsculpt NEO has been FDA cleared to treat abdomen, buttocks, arms, calves, and thighs. Similar to the process and techniques behind Emsculpt NEO, Regenesis also offers treatment with Emsella for incontinence. This procedure uses electromagnetic energy to deliver pelvic floor muscle contractions - thousands of contractions within a single session. Rather than building new muscle, Emsella re-educates the muscles and offers a non-surgical way to address incontinence. Additionally, the strengthened pelvic muscles may offer increased sexual wellness through increased blood flow and sensitivity. Whether you’re suffering from an orthopedic issue like joint dysfunction or pain, or if you’re simply looking to proactively prevent future injury and strain by improving your general health and wellness through weight loss and weight management, Regenesis is the specialized treatment center to address your concerns. Dr. Ragsdell and his team are focused on your wellness and satisfaction and look forward to everyone reaching and enjoying their own individual optimal health. FAMILY MEDICINE By Jason D. Philippe, MD Medicare Open Enrollment: The Next Few Weeks Can Change Your Life If you’re on Medicare, the next few weeks can change your life. It’s Medicare Open Enrollment, and at Millennium Physician Group our physicians and care teams lead the nation in the quality of care we deliver to patients of Medicare age. Studies show those who are uninsured or underinsured are less likely to take advantage of preventive services and more likely to have poorer health outcomes, so we specialize in all the preventive care proven to lead to healthier outcomes. If you’re 65 or turning 65, you might be missing out on important health benefits, and Medicare Open Enrollment is the perfect time to evaluate your healthcare needs with your primary-care provider. There are a lot of choices, and it can be confusing, but your primary-care provider knows your medical history better than anyone and should be one of your first stops when it comes to discussing your needs. Some of the top things to remember when preparing to take part in Medicare Open Enrollment are: 1. Know the dates. Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. This is when you can join, switch, or drop your Medicare health plan or a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). 2. Know the network. Make sure your preferred doctors and hospitals are in your plan’s network. Don’t assume they are and don’t wait until after you’ve enrolled to check. If your primary-care provider and specialist are not on your plan, you may end up paying higher out-of-network costs to see them or you may have to choose a new primary-care provider or specialist. 3. Learn the lingo. Understanding what terms like premium, co-insurance, and deductible mean can help you be more confident when comparing coverage and making decisions. Our website YourMedicareConnect.com reviews some of the most common Medicare lingo and the official Medicare website Medicare.gov has a complete and most current list of terms and meanings. 4. Make an appointment to see your primary-care provider to discuss your healthcare priorities. Medicare plans center on preventive services, which is what your relationship with your primary-care provider is all about. Together, we can look at last year’s medical expenses and assess your needs. There’s a lot of information out there, and we care about the health of our patients and the community, so Millennium created our Medicare Connect program to connect you to the right Medicare resources and partners. Remember, you do have a choice when it comes to Medicare coverage. If you’re a Millennium patient and have questions about your Medicare coverage, contact our Medicare Navigator Olivia Pierrelouis at Olivia.Pierrelouis@mpgus.com or 866.674.6880. PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY BREAKTHROUGH “My feet feel like they’re on fire.” “Each step feels like I’m walking through wet paint.” “I live in constant fear that I could fall.” “I can’t sleep, my hands and feet tingle all night.” What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the US have peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately, this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms. Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine (AAIM) in St. Petersburg shares this belief. “I’ve been treating neuropathy in all its various forms, for a long time so often my patients come to me because of the symptoms, not because of a diagnosis. They read the testimonial of another patient or one of their friends or family members have been treated here and they say to themselves ‘hey, I feel the same thing.” Fran B. of Treasure Island testified to this. “I remember my husband driving me to my consultation and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood. I was so envious – I just kept thinking ‘I would give anything just to walk again for more than just a few feet without pain or my legs getting weak’. My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription. I was so depressed.” “Almost all of our patients come to us with a story similar to Fran’s. They’ve been everywhere else. They’ve been told there’s no hope. They’ve been told ‘it’s just part of getting older’.” shares Mandy, a Patient Care Coordinator at AAIM. “They have been told it’s just a part of getting older.” Those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy often face a very grim reality; Western medicine declares that there is no solution while most alternative therapies carry large price tags and offer little to no

resolve. Which is why Dr. Gibbons and the staff at AAIM pride themselves on being ‘the last resort with the best results’. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves and this damage is commonly caused by lack of blood flow in the hands and feet. A lack of blood flow results in a lack of nutrients; the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitating. Because neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate they will continue to do so until they are completely expired, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues. “In this case, the absence of pain is not necessarily a good thing,” shares Dr. Gibbons. “This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread.” When it comes to treating peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its origin, early detection greatly improves your chances of a full recovery. If you or someone you love are suffering with chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling or ‘pins and needles’ or you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, it’s important to know that there are options.

There is hope! Call 727-272-3587 to schedule an initial consultation. Visit www.AchieveACUIM.com to learn more.

CBD & WELLNESS By Margo Gilliland

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS ALL CDC GUIDELINES FOLLOWED, PLUS SOCIAL DISTANCING

What method of CBD consumption is best for you? Hope you had a wonderful summer! I really enjoy getting to know many of you and educating you on hemp in Florida. My goal is to provide you options to assist in your journey to live pain free, anxiety free, sleep well and enjoy big fun. There are a number of ways to consume CBD, each with a different mechanism. Each individual’s metabolic rate determines the speed of absorption of CBD. The following are commonly used consumption methods and estimated time frames: Vaping and Smoking: This is the fastest way to feel the effects of the CBD-rich cannabis plant and its extracts. Sublingual: When CBD oil or tinctures are placed directly under one’s tongue, the effects are faster than oral ingestion but slower than vaping. It typically takes effect in 15-30 minutes. Oral ingestion: Consumption of CBD through edibles, pills, and soft gels takes 1-2 hours to feel the effects as it must travel through the digestive system. The effect often lasts longer too. Topicals: A cream or gel is applied directly where relief is needed. Effects with this very localized approach may be felt in 15 to 45 minutes. If you are beginning to think about your holiday shopping, we will be offering festive and inspiring gift boxes: anxiety, sleep, pain, fun and holiday. A helpful, easy and unique gift for your friends and family. Also, we will have some delightful stocking stuffers! I am always committed to providing organic, high-quality, third-party, lab-tested products for my clients. I help customers by combining solid cannabis science with my own lived experiences. NATIONAL SMOKE OUT DAY Give your health a boost by saying bye bye to vaping, cigarettes and cigars. The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November (Nov. 17), challenging smokers to give up cigarettes for 24 hours. Smoking costs Florida $8.64 billion per year in smoking-related healthcare costs and $8.32 billion annually in smoking-related losses in productivity. Second-hand smoke can be deadly and cause health issues, and the good news is that Pinellas County has banned smoking in beaches and parks. To promote smoking cessation, including therapy sessions, Tobacco Free Florida provides 24/7 access to call a trained Quit Coach and create a personalized quit plan and classes. Look for support at local health care venues, such as St. Anthony’s Hospital’s Smoking Cessation Class, which provides valuable tools to help quit using tobacco, including coping with cravings and physical and emotional symptoms. These are excellent means of counseling that the organizers also supplement with free aids for smoking cessation while supplies last. Floridians can choose to join in, or even volunteer to help organize. For more Pinellas County classes and resources, visit: www.pinellascounty.org/hr/health_wellness/ cessation-resources.htm COPING WITH LOSS The holidays can be difficult, especially if you have lost a friend or family member. Experts recommend you surround yourself with people who care, take good care of yourself, let others help you, postpone major decisions and consider grief counseling with a professional or spiritual counselor. Aging with Dignity hosts an informative series with counselor Margaret McGahon introducing a reflective exercise on processing grief. She offers a practical exercise for coping with grief and encourages us to reflect on how loss has impacted our lives. She starts with open-ended sentences about your loss that you complete. “Do this exercise and see if it brings up anything that sheds light or any insights into your grief experience.” Check out these helpful tips. https://bit.ly/3T19YAC HEALTH NEWS According to WUSF/NPR, NIH is funding a research project to collect voice data and develop artificial intelligence that could diagnose based on speech. Everything from vocal cord vibrations to breathing patterns offers potential info about your health, says Dr. Yael Bensoussan, a USF laryngologist and leader on the study.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Details, Details, Details! Real estate transactions tend to be document intensive. They involve long, highly detailed sales contracts & leases, deeds and many other legal instruments where the details are absolutely critical. When I advise my clients as to their rights in a real estate deal, I always ask them to bring ALL the documents involved with them. Experience shows that people often misunderstand their situations in fundamental ways, but the documents are the path to seeing it all clearly. Problems arise when the documents are not as clear or accurate as they should be (and that happens more often than you may think). It’s usually a function of haste in the drafting process. To their credit, most real estate agents work very hard to write clear, accurate contracts, on forms, which are nearly universally regarded as reliable and fair, i.e., the FAR/BAR contract forms (a subject for another column). Sometimes, however, I meet clients whose lives are topsy-turvy because of transactions, which have gone off the rails, and the paperwork isn’t what it should be. Sometimes it’s self-help by clients who read a lot on the web, and think that they can save money

“Your honor, Once Upon a Time there was this guy (my client), who had a house he wanted to sell…” While you hear a variety of definitions of contracts in real estate school and books, in the final analysis a contract is a series of behaviors, documents, and communications, which, when taken together (and in great detail), a judge will feel that he or she has enough information to put it all together into an enforceable contract and make a final legal ruling.

on a lawyer. I’m here to tell you that there’s something to three years of law school, months of studying for the Bar exam, and a lifetime’s continuing legal education and experience. When things do go wrong (as they do a certain percentage of the time), I (and other attorneys) do our level best to negotiate our way through it, but sometimes you get down to the fact that the final remedy can only be had in court. That’s what I call “Once Upon a Time” time. I have to be ready to stand up in front of a judge and say, in effect,

The side that knows the facts in the greatest detail (and with the greatest accuracy), will oftentimes win. That only happens if, as you go through the process, you hold onto every piece of paper, keep notes on every meeting, phone call and event, and keep yourself extremely well organized. And if you can do that, your contracts, e-mails and other documentation will also be much more clear and enforceable as a result. TAMPA BAY & ST. PETE Take Lead in Response to Hurricane Ian Story by STEVE TRAIMAN n the wake of the estimated $70 to $80 billion swath of destruction that Hurricane Ian left in Southwest Florida in late September, the Tampa Bay area in general – and St. Pete in particular, has taken the lead in getting vital information to residents and businesses who want to provide assistance. According to ABC Action News, the Federal Emergency Management Administration already has provided more than $500 million directly to Hurricane Ian survivors, and the federal Department of Transportation has delivered more than $50 million for rapid reconstruction to Sanibel Island and other hard-hit areas. Florida’s agriculture was badly impacted, with more than $1.56 billion in losses, and will need help. St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch told Paradise News, “It has been uplifting to see our local community come together to support our neighbors to the south. Thanks to the Rays Hurricane Recovery for partnering with the city to collect supplies that went to help those most effected. So many residents showed up and donated what they could – surpassing expectations and proving that every little bit helps. “The Emergency Management Team along with many other city departments and staff worked hard and did an amazing job with hurricane prep and recovery. The city’s Emergency Management Team will publish an After Action report and bring it to City Council soon. Continuous improvement for resilience is vitally important to our city. OSR learned about some new motivated organizations to collaborate with in advance of the next emergency – OSR is here along with the Greenhouse, Emergency Management and more to plan for local resilience.” “…The Greenhouse’s Prepare website is continually updated with the latest resources and programs to help local shops get back in business and recover post-disaster. Their Small Business Navigators provide one-on-one assistance to small business owners as well…” Both Florida, Tampa Bay and St. Pete city websites have numerous resources listed for those impacted by Ian. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) and the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) have activated the Business Damage Assessment Survey in response to Hurricane Ian: www.floridadisaster.biz/BusinessDamageAssessments 28

NOVEMBER 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

In 2005, the Sunshine State declared November Manatee Awareness Month to promote the protection of Florida’s official marine mammal. The Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, is a large, slow-moving marine mammal with an elongated, round body and paddle-shaped flippers and tail. Manatees are herbivores, feeding solely on seagrass, algae and other vegetation in freshwater and estuarine systems in the southeastern United States. Full-grown manatees weigh between 800 to 3,500 pounds and reach 10-13 feet in length. Females are larger than males. Manatees can hold their breath for approximately 20 minutes; however, they regularly breathe every few minutes. Florida manatees can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts during summer but in the winter they congregate in Florida’s warm water habitats as they have relatively little body fat and a low metabolic rate. Loss of warm water habitats, decreasing food, red tides and unusually cold weather threaten manatees, and many die from being hit by boaters. Report sick, injured, dead, tagged, orphaned, or harassed manatees to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 24 hours a day, seven days a week: call 1-888-404-3922. Cellular phone customers: *FWC or #FWC. The relationship between a mother and baby is a strong social bond. Gestation is 12 months before birth, and the baby will be about 4-4.5 feet long and weigh between 60-70 pounds. For one-two years, the baby (calf) stays close to Mom, learning food locations, rest areas and warm weather refuges. If you see a manatee, simply enjoy the moment, and appreciate their grace and beauty. Do not reach out to the manatee; keep a safe distance. For more on Florida’s manatees go to Steve Traiman’s PN article in June/July 2022. www.paradisenewsfl.com/record-manatee-deaths

Happy holidays everyone! It is hard to believe that once again we are at that time of year. We all celebrate in different ways, however one thing remains consistent, which is how much we love our pets. Most of us (admittedly, even we veterinary professionals) express this with food. We have a large meal with various dishes varying from traditional and cultural fare to delicacies we would not otherwise have, and it becomes difficult not to share with our pets. Caution is advised as our pets may not be able to “stomach” our holiday fare.

Pancreatitis – The pancreas is a very important organ that is responsible for secreting the main digestive enzymes that break down food (as well as other important tasks). Ingestion of foods rich in fats are typically, but not always, the cause of inflammation that induces pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can manifest as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea but can become severe, causing a painful belly, lethargy, and dehydration. In rare cases, this can become so severe that the pancreas can release the enzymes into the abdomen causing peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity) and even necrotizing pancreatitis (in essence where the pancreas can die off).

Quiet Cove is the BEST KEPT SECRET on Tierra Verde… but the developers are quite

well known with previous success stories like Sunset Watch and Hidden Lagoon on Tierra Verde or Boca Sands on St. Pete Beach. Realizing it takes a team to accomplish such an impeccable track record, the developers prefer to have their product speak for itself. It is a pleasure working with a local builder knowing that their great reputation has only strengthened over decades through hard work, integrity, and impeccable customer service coupled with an in-depth understanding of our local beach community.

A Standard of Excellence

In a world of substandard labor, supply shortages, and poor customer service; the developers of Quiet Cove refuse to compromise or yield. They not only listen to discerning waterfront buyers, they embrace their evolving requirements and make them reality. This hurricane season has reminded us of the desire for peace of mind. Elevating your current home to the latest Florida Building Code standards is not only expensive and time consuming, but stressful and incredibly disruptive to your lifestyle. Quiet Cove provides you with that peace of mind. Standard. 50-foot-long boat slips with direct deep-water access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Standard. A fourth bedroom that can serve as an office in today’s post-pandemic world. Standard. Semi-private elevator access to 3,126 feet of one-level living. Standard. Two car garage prewired for EV and private climate-controlled storage. Standard. Ample guest parking behind gated access. Standard. Heated saltwater pool and spa, lounge area with grills, and fitness room. Standard. And on top of all of that, the two penthouses and six lower residencies feature an oversized balcony with stunning sunrise water views. Standard.

Quiet Cove - Escape to Island Life

Luxury. Serenity. Sanctuary. Perfectly located on Tierra Verde, your intimate gated island oasis awaits. The surrounding lush tropical vegetation provides well deserved privacy. Feel like boating? Your slip is steps away. Paddle board or kayak? The canal is frequented by gentle manatees, friendly dolphins, and is teeming with fish. Just want to relax? Your oversized balcony with stunning water views is right outside your sliding door. Want to take in a game? The Bucs and Bolts are just 30 minutes away in Tampa and the Rays and Rowdies are 15 minutes away in St. Pete. Take a walk on the beach? Fort De Soto, voted the best beach in the US, is a bike ride away. Hungry? The foodie scene in St. Pete and Tampa is beyond. Need to fly somewhere? TPA, PIE, SRQ, and Albert Whitted airports are close by. Extended travel? Just Lock & Leave. Truly, the location is perfection.

Construction Milestones

Well underway, Quiet Cove has four floors poured and is on track to have all floors in place and capped off with the roof by the beginning of November 2022. To celebrate we are hosting an Open House on Friday, November 18th, 2022. Intrigued? Want to learn more firsthand? We welcome you to check out this exclusive opportunity for yourself.

Completion is targeted for Summer 2023. However, time is of the essence. Securing one of the eight exclusive residences by November 2022 will allow you to customize your kitchen appliances, cabinets, countertops, lighting fixtures, and flooring throughout. The Quiet Cove interior designer is ready to assist you in making your dream a reality. ParadiseNewsFL.com | NOVEMBER 2022

SEO INCREASES REVENUE There are only two ways to increase revenues: Do more business with current clients or acquire new customers, usually as referrals from previous customers. Did you know that new customers and untapped revenue are at your fingertips in your current client base? Consider increasing revenues by systemizing a referral program for your business, a cost-effective strategy for increasing your business revenue. Conventional print advertising, properly designed, is still cost effective for many clients. Robert King, LMT, was a new Paradise NEWS advertiser in October. He was thrilled with five new client responses to his massage therapist ad/advertorial in the first week after the print issue was delivered to 20,000 mailboxes. You can also find new customers by SEO-optimizing your websites and improving your position in Google Searches. “Websites are the digital foundation of businesses,” says Paul Donahue, CEO of Advanced Digital Media Services. “Most web pages never receive any Google search traffic because they were not created with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), a critical tool for the last 30+ years. It’s a moving target, always changing. Website design today requires a team of quality writers, SEO keyword researchers, front-end web designers and back-end, on-page, SEO specialists,” says Donahue. Want to rank No. 1 on Google for your targeted search terms? Start with optimizing your company’s website. Advanced Digital Media Services can help. This website design/SEO digital marketing agency has offices here and Dillon, Colorado. They wanted to make sure they practiced what they preach. “We thought it would be a

good idea to rank ourselves for our target keywords such as: seo clearwater fl, seo dunedin fl, seo largo fl, seo pinellas park fl and seo st petersburg fl before we started contacting potential new clients in our target home markets,” says Donahue. Donahue advises checking out a prospective web development company’s before and after versions of their clients’ websites so you could get a solid visual representation of the improvements. You can use some of ADMS’ work at www.advdms.com/portfolio. “Social proof is imperative to any business’s success. Those with a systematic review gathering platform out-perform their competitors by an astounding 313 percent! Donahue suggests businesses: • Utilize a review gathering software platform. • Review their home page. People form a subconscious opinion about your company, practice, or organization the second your homepage loads. Do their home pages create consumer trust the moment they display? • Prepare an SEO Competitor Analysis. “This is the starting point of an effective SEO strategy; an SEO campaign started without a solid strategy is a waste of time and money.” Get the Advanced Digital Media Services advantage today. They are accepting a limited number of new accounts before the end of the year. Call 727-201-0069 if you want a no-obligation review and effective SEO strategy for your website. PAMELA JOY TROW Her newest book of poem and illustrations is mesmerizing and an ode to Mother Nature: There’s A Crystal Clear Pond: The Unseen World of Water Pollution Coloring Book. Working with content director Jeremiah D. Tipton (funded by NEA, Pinellas County and Creative Pinellas), she is hosting free interactive workshops at local libraries 11/12 Dunedin, 12/3 Tarpon Springs and 12/17 Safety Harbor; attendees get the book, colored pencils, and other goodies. Pamela finds inspiration in the places she has lived. Brooklyn instilled a love for mythology, archetypes, and metaphors, Santa Fe inspired her Day of the Dead work, and Florida’s West Coast has prompted creations of fantasy, mermaids, and sea life themes. Joyous art is her jam, and Trow’s artworks can be purchased on greeting cards, prints, stickers, bookmarks in stores and museum shops across the United States as well as the UK, Ireland, and Paris. THE TAO OF DOW The Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement (MAACM) is showcasing the legendary artist and visual composition guru Arthur Wesley Dow through 1/15/2023. On exhibit are 18 color woodblocks, six paintings, and 41 original cyanotypes from the rare Ipswich Days album. Also included in the exhibit are the original album By Salt Marshes, where Dow illustrated his friend Everett Stanley Hubbard’s poems with simple woodcuts, and the three sets of Ipswich Prints, which include 18 prints of Dow’s original designs. Dow began experimenting with woodblock printing in 1891, when he looked for new, non-Western inspirations for landscape painting. While researching at the Boston Public Library, he discovered the flat, linear woodblock prints of Japanese-master Hokusai. Struck by the simplicity, elegance, and decorative beauty of Hokusai’s compositions, Dow’s way of seeing landscapes was transformed. Dow embraced certain compositional techniques from Japanese sources which defined the ukiyo-e aesthetic: bold lines, flattened planes of color, asymmetry, truncated forms, the division of an image into sections through devices like windows, screens and walls, and the use of strong diagonals and unusual perspectives. In ukiyo-e prints, Dow found an alternative to traditional academic techniques, wedding an admiration for Oriental aesthetics with an English Arts and Crafts sensibility and seeking a synthesis of Western and Eastern art. Dow called his woodcuts “color themes” and executed every step of the printing process: choosing the image, carving the blocks, selecting and applying colors, and printing each impression by hand. He frequently experimented with color in his prints, using the same blocks to make multiple impressions in different inks. which enabled him to suggest different seasons or times of day.

By Peter Roos There has been a big band at the St. Petersburg Coliseum in downtown St. Petersburg as long as I can remember. Renee’s acrobatic dance act was part of the show there in 1970, on our first New Years together as college sweethearts. We celebrated my birthday that night. I turned 19 that night, but I told Renee that I was 24. The following April, I fessed up and proposed. The spectacular St. Petersburg Coliseum provides historic swing-era ambiance and an unparalleled 15,000 square foot oak dance floor and is located at 535 Fourth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Meet Mitko with St. Pete Microgreens Originally from Bulgaria, Mitko moved to the Delaware beach in 2014. In 2019, suffering from various illnesses, he looked for something to boost his immune system. He stumbled upon microgreens, which he researched thoroughly. Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are approximately 1-3 inches tall. They have an aromatic flavor and concentrated nutrient content and come in a variety of colors and textures. Unlike larger herbs and vegetables that take weeks or months to grow, microgreens can be harvested and eaten in 7-10 days. Despite their small stature, microgreens actually boast a more intense flavor than larger vegetables and herbs. Microgreens are a rich source of phytonutrients and antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Mitko bought seeds, grew and ate a small microgreen salad with each meal. He soon felt an improvement in his health, and started supplying his friends with these microgreens. When he moved to St. Petersburg in 2021, Mitko continued growing a variety of the delicious nutritious sprouts and joined the Corey Sunday Market and the Fresh Market at Wiregrass in “New Tampa” as a weekly vendor on the first and third Saturday each month. Learn more at the Corey market every Sunday 10am-2pm. Mitko will happily let you sample some sprouts to find the flavor you like best. They are light weight and last well for a few days once harvested, if kept cool and refrigerated in the clear plastic containers they come in.

ECO By Nanette Wiser

WATER WISE As the holidays approach, consider the gift that keeps on giving our planet a chance with a donation to an eco-friendly organization like Tampa Bay Watch or shop their online store. Volunteer with your friends and family at their estuary clean-ups/ restoration projects or gift a membership to the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, a sea-worthy experience. One of their regular activities is a morning at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Education Center, 3000 Pinellas Bayway South in Tierra Verde to help build oyster reef balls! This task involves pouring marine-friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold to create oyster reef balls, then taking apart the molds when dry. The reef balls will be installed at a future date to stabilize shorelines and prevent erosion while creating habitat similar to natural oyster communities found along shoreline areas throughout Tampa Bay. www.tampabaywatch.org CLIMATE-LOVING CITIES Tampa Bay Innovation Center’s next cohort program (1/2023) will focus on sustainability start-up companies, working with Florida Power and Light and Duke Energy, all interested in climate tech and clean tech innovators. PODS will also support the program with mentoring and financial support as well as Ark Invest, who holds the naming rights to the TBIC’s new building to open in summer 2023, the Ark Innovation Center. Hoping to support sustainable solutions from Florida start-ups, TBIC is looking for these idea imagineers: Energy storage and delivery (smart-grid), smart buildings and low impact development, sustainable sources of power generation, supply chain or retail waste reduction, low waste manufacturing and clean water/water conservation. www.tbinnovates.com/accelerator TORTOISE SAVIOR Evolutionary biologist and herpetologist Peter Scott joins Eckerd College this fall as an assistant professor of biology. He appeared on the cover of Science magazine in 2020 as the lead author of a study of the DNA of Mojave Desert tortoises. Scott and his fellow researcher at UCLA collaborated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to study the tortoises that had been placed in its Large Scale Translocation Site in the Ivanpah Valley southeast of Las Vegas. According to published reports, many of the tortoises were kept as pets, which became illegal when the animals were added to the endangered species list or had to be moved because of development. The Fish and Wildlife Service wanted to see if the tortoises could safely reenter the wild. ParadiseNewsFL.com | NOVEMBER 2022

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

NOVEMBER ASTROLOGY The Full Frost Moon in financial sign Taurus on the 8th is a Total Lunar Eclipse. Aspecting Uranus will bring sudden, unexpected changes. And opposite Sun, Venus, and Mercury in Scorpio, the sign of resources and investments, this will cross over into all areas of support. What comes to the surface now can no longer be ignored and must be modified as found to be necessary. These planetary energies will happen on a global level. With the Sun, Venus, and Mercury visiting Scorpio until mid-month our interests will be on all manners of assets, whether monetary or general support. We want to know what and who we have in our corner now. The eclipse shakeup leaves us wanting definites, not maybes. Then on the 16th Venus leads the way into easy-going, generous Sagittarius; followed by changeable Mercury on the 17th. We are again adventurous with our time and money while being friendly, outgoing, and enjoying our freedom. The Sun enters Sagittarius on the 22nd and urges us to make last-minute travel plans. The next day the Moon joins the Sun in this enthusiastic sign and a new lunar cycle begins. This cycle brings creativity, flexibility, and a desire to indulge; just in time for Thanksgiving. Energy from Saturn opens opportunities to help out in a humanitarian way; directly or by supporting charities. We will be optimistic and broadminded for the rest of this month. Mars is retrograde all month in Gemini the sign of all communication and transportation of every kind. Difficult aspects of Neptune and Jupiter add confusion and difficulties in these areas. Mechanical devices may not be reliable. Diagnosis is unreliable or faulty. Temperaments are touchy and misunderstandings likely. Flexibility is necessary as a lack of certainty prevails. Escapism is highly sought now as we want some relief from 64

ENCOURAGING WORDS

L ife i n th e C one of U n c e rta i nt y Transcending the Illusion of Control The only thing we have control over is our choice to either react mindlessly or respond mindfully to ‘what is’ in the current moment. To practice the ‘Art of Uncertainty’ is to get comfortable being out of control. ~ excerpt from, The Art of Uncertainty

It’s interesting to observe how fear can creep in and overwhelm the logical mind when threatening conditions seem beyond our control. Human beings’ disdain being out of control. When was the last time you felt stuck in a vortex of fear, being rendered powerless over your own destiny? For me (and millions of others), the answer could be September 28th, as hurricane Ian crawled northeast along the Gulf Coast; predicted to hit Florida with a category F4-F5 impact. As articulate as the meteorologists were, they could offer only an educated guess when and where Ian would make landfall– and, to what degree, it would affect us. They offered us a graphic rendering filled with speculation models called “spaghetti plots” that headed “willy-nilly” in many directions, creating what they know as “The Cone of Uncertainty.” The problem with that is, it’s, well, uncertain–which only spawns more angst, and fear in the minds and hearts of everyone in the “Cone.” Tragically, hurricane

Ian did indeed make landfall, about 80 miles south of where I live and wrought devastating loss, pain and suffering to people living in the Fort Myers area. Ian triggered immense fear in millions of Floridians along the Gulf Coast who would never experience the direct wrath of this monster storm. Often, fear originates in our mind because, try as we may, we have little control over the future. The future is where we look for our peace and security, seeking the assurance that everything will be all right. The illusion is that we have control over many variables in our daily life. However, we have control over very little, other than our next breath and our next thought. Consider these questions: Can you control the driver in the next lane? Can you control the surges of the waves in the ocean? Can you control the earth when it quakes? Can you control the stock market and the direction interest rates go?

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

The obvious answer to these questions is the same, yet look at how much time and energy we spend worrying about it. We all experience our own personal “Cone of Uncertainty” at various times of our lives. Our uncertainty may not be at all storm related. Perhaps it’s the “spaghetti plots” of uncertainty laid out by a doctor’s diagnosis that put us in the middle of a different type of storm. Maybe what is going on in the economy–or the increasing crime and violence that seeps into our minds while watching the 6-o’clock news puts us in the “Cone of Uncertainty.” The cause of our personal storms can be legion. THE TAKEAWAY: A few of my friends say, “You should move out of Florida to escape the threat and uncertainty of hurricanes.” To that I reply, “I came from California where drought, fire, gridlock, and earthquakes manifest their own “Cone of Uncertainty” regularly.” As the saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide. There is nowhere we can run to–physically or emotionally–that doesn’t have its own version of the cone of uncertainty. Perhaps the resolution we must embrace is that uncertainty comes with the privilege of living in a human skin; it’s not a matter of avoiding our uncertainties– it’s more about how we interpret them. Whatever your personal “Cone of Uncertainty” may be today, allow it to be your teacher; live proactively with it and don’t allow fear to have its way with you. Get comfortable in knowing what you have control over and what you don’t– and make peace with it. Perhaps foremost, always find solace in the great teacher’s admonition: “This too shall pass.” He was right on; good, bad, or indifferent, the storm always passes.
