With Piano Man “Carl” Chill is Back in the Limelight

- by Peter A. Roos

It’s been quite a while since we took a peek at Chill Restaurant at Corey & Gulf... oops, our mistake. Even from the outside you can see a return to the kind of quality commitment that propelled this place to the top of the charts and won Chill’s owners Paul & Ruthie Buxbaum a Business of the Year award a couple of years back. The landscaping has returned to an award-winning look and the outdoor seating changes are beautiful. New, comfortable booths have been added outdoors. Speakers were being installed when we were there, so the music could be enjoyed outside as well. Ruthie told us that the next outdoor project will be “fans & misters, to make the outdoor dining area feel as cool as it looks.” Upgrades and improvements to the inside are comfortable, efficient and delicious. Chef Steve Horvat, a nutritional specialist and a personal trainer, has taken over in the kitchen. Steve has revamped the menu, adding a wide variety of fresh, locally caught fish. Chill’s local catch features whole fish, tagged by local fishing boats - you can know where it was caught, when and even by which boat. You’ve heard of “Farm to Table”? Chef Steve has introduced “Gulf to Table”. The quality & freshness is unmistakable. Steve’s emphasis on health and wellness is a perfect match to Ruthie’s commitment to “providing amazing flavors without the guilt of refined or processed foods and sugars. Eat clean with no sacrifice of flavor,” she says. This looked to us like Chill’s best menu yet. In the past, Chill offered only tapas dining style. Thanks to their guest’s feedback over the past 4 years, Chill now offers a more traditional dining menu, with entrees and side items. The “tapas” menu is still available, but there is now a full offering of casual fine dining entrees. Portion sizes are larger, yet are well balanced. The kitchen cooking area has again been expanded, as well as the culinary staff, so guests can get their breakfast, lunch or dinner selections faster. Sunday brunches are packed, featuring live entertainment, and all your favorite breakfast items. Speaking of entertainment, everyone’s favorite ‘piano man’, Carl, has become the weekend act, on Friday and Saturday nights at Chill. What a hit! The full liquor bar and dancing area are a perfect home for Carl’s newest piano bar. Saxaphonist/Singer Stacey Knights and guitarists Chris & Igor are regulars. Guest appearances by other local performers complete the entertainment schedule. The kitchen is open until really late with quite an expansive menu, even after 10 pm. Daily drink specials after 9 pm are encouraging more locals to come in and share a cocktail or two. If you haven’t been in to ‘Chill’ for awhile, hopefully we’ve sparked your curiosity. Their posted hours are 7 am to at least midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 7 am to at least 10 pm the rest of the week. When you go, tell them you read about them in Paradise News. Visit Chill Restaurant 7410 Gulf Boulevard, St Pete Beach, 33706 • www.chillstpetebeach.com, Facebook, Trip Adviser or Yelp. For parties, catering or entertainment, call 727-360-8080.

Verducci Italian Market ‘Ready’ The restaurant business has finally slowed down to the point that the owners can now focus on stocking inventory for the new Market at Blind Pass and 78th Ave. in St. Pete Beach. June is a realistic time to look for an opening. “The height of season would have been too crazy a time to open the new venture,” said Vinnie Fortunato, spokesperson for the new venture. “We wanted to get the building completely ready and open at a slower time. We never want to disappoint our customers, so we want to get our staff trained during the slower summer time.” TradeWinds Resorts, added 100

Ride “Bucky” the mechanical shark, or test your balancing skills on the Triple WipeOut surf ride? Kids enjoy sifting and searching for fossils, gems and sea shells at the TW Treasure Mining Co., or jumping high on a bungee trampoline. What is round, covered in protective spines, has five teeth and walks on lots of tube feet? Sea urchins! You can view and touch them at the new Touch Tank Experience, at the Outfitter Shop at Guy Harvey Outpost sponsored by Secrets of the Sea Aquarium. Maritana Grille at Loew’s Don CeSar has a new “St. Pete Farmers Market”. “Some of the best ingredients come from local growers! We want to help heighten the awareness of these

A special tasting menu featuring locally sourced ingredients does just that!” boasted Kenny Hunsberger, executive chef at Loew’s Don CeSar. They say that Hugging is good medicine. It transfers energy and gives the person hugged an emotional lift. Some people believe you need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and twelve for growth. Scientists say that hugging is a form of communication because it can say things you don’t have the words for. Another nice thing about a hug is that you usually can’t give one without getting one.

We are pleased to feature Disney Legend Al Konetzni on our cover of this issue in recognition of his 100th birthday on May 19th. We sincerely thank Disney artist Ron Cohee for the terrific cariature of Al and the mouse they helped make one of the most recognizable characters in the world. We are looking forward to helping Al celebrate his milestone birthday. I was thrilled last month to be a guest of the City of Treasure Island’s 100th birthday party and parade for one of their own residents, Maudie Gurak. We have been attending enough funerals lately, I prefer birthday parties. Maudie is still an active member of the Treasure Islettes and the Action Club, whose membership came out in force for the occasion. Treasure Island restaurants and groceries generously donated food for the event. Happy 100th birthday! Following the theme of our cover story, our feature article in this issue celebrates significant anniversaries of institutions over the last 125 years on the beaches and in the Tampa Bay Area. Everything from the Plant Hotel (1891), Fort Desoto, the City of Clearwater, and many more. Paradise NEWS has also appointed its first ever food editor, famous local author and editor, Joyce LaFray. See page 14 for details. If we had $100 for every time we have been told by a newly met friend or neighbor when they find out what we do for a living “We love Paradise NEWS”, we would have a basis of a healthy retirement account. We are not yet ready to retire but when you pass the typical retirement age, you start thinking about such things.

More Tidbits Echelon City Center Planned - Echelon LLC announced plans for a mixed-use development of nearly 3 million SF on 16.5 acres at Carillon. PINELLAS COUNTY “Cover Your Assets” for FREE with Property Fraud Alert. The Pinellas County Clerk’s office has launched a proactive subscription service that offers citizens protection of property title. Customers signing up for this free service will be notified immediately, either by phone or email, of any document recorded against their property in the Official Records of the Clerk’s office where deeds, mortgages and other documents are recorded. The FBI says property and mortgage fraud is the fastest growing white collar crime. Property fraud occurs when someone files a fraudulent document in the Official Records against your property. While the alert system does not prevent the fraudulent activity from taking place, it provides an early warning system for subscribers to become aware of what may have otherwise gone undetected. The public can sign up for the Clerk’s Property Fraud Alert service by visiting the clerk’s website www.mypinellasclerk.org or by calling the Property Fraud Alert hotline at 1-800-728-3858.

TIERRA VERDE A 90-room Tierra Verde Marina Resort Hotel may be the replacement for the old Port-o-Call Resort residents and businesses have been waiting for since the timeshare operation ceased and the resort was raised. An upscale waterfront lodge, an expanded high-and-dry boat storage building and a new restaurant would be featured.

A City of St. Petersburg review board recently approved a height variance for its rooftop architectural trimmings to reach 85 feet rather than the 50 feet that normally is permitted. Neighbors and local business groups strongly support the plans that would transform a property that has been an eyesore in the high-end community through which people pass to & from Fort De Soto Park’s pristine beaches and popular fishing spots. “We’re excited to bring not just a traditional hotel to the island, but more of a set of luxury resort villas,” developer Pat Bowler recently told the city’s Development Review Commission. The six-story hotel wouldn’t be much higher than the massive boat storage building next to it, which got a variance last year to build up 63 feet, up from 50. City staff advised against the hotel variance and a handful of commissioners agreed, questioning whether its size was consistent with surrounding areas of mostly homes and mid-rise condos. Ultimately, a show of support from the local community swayed a majority of the commissioners to grant the developers’ request. A conference center, coffee shop and a rooftop event space are planned, among other amenities.

BDG Architects, the designers of the Epicurean Hotel near Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, designed the proposed Tierra Verde resort. TAMPA BAY AREA Museum of Science & Industry Tampa:MOSI's positive changes attract the attention of downtown visionaries. MOSI has seen many positive changes over the past year, and, as a result, the museum is now attracting the eye of downtown developer Jeff Vinik, sparking a conversation about the possibility of moving MOSI downtown. While discussions are only just beginning and there are no immediate plans to move, the MOSI board and leadership continue to be open to new possibilities that may lead to the betterment of the museum. “The early discussions about incorporating MOSI into Vinik's downtown vision are extremely exciting, and it's important to remember the tremendous evolution that MOSI's current leadership has facilitated over the past year – a $2 million gift from Florida Hospital, an innovative partnership established with USF, and all short-term debt paid off – to name just a few,” said Robert Thomas, MOSI board chair. “These positive changes only make MOSI more attractive to downtown visionaries.” PN

Restore Shell Key Pass Collaborative Long-term Solutions Needed

Tierra Verde, FL – At one time it was thousands of feet across, now the Northern Pass into the Shell Key Preserve has closed. Tampa Bay Watch is concerned with the serious and long term impacts to our natural resources that will occur if the Pass is not reopened and water circulation restored. A multi-partner approach is needed for a long term solution to this problem. Shell Key is an ecological treasure that needs to be protected and restored for future generations to appreciate. “As the northern pass closes, water circulation is dramatically reduced, if not eliminated, to the northern half of the Preserve,” says Peter Clark, President of Tampa Bay Watch. “Water flow and biological access now must come from the southern Bunces Pass area, which greatly reduces flushing of the area.” Problems associated with the closure of the Pass include the reduction of water quality, deterioration of critical seagrass communities, loss of habitat for commercially and recreationally important fish, negative impacts to bird and other wildlife habitat and restricted recreational usage. A permanent solution to the problem is needed to reopen and maintain the northern pass into Shell Key Preserve. A hydrological analysis 24

of the northern Shell Key area needs to occur to evaluate construction alternatives. Local homeowners are also concerned about the closure of the pass. “It’s the murkiest water that I have seen at my dock in sixteen years since the pass is closed and there is no longer flow,” states Patrick Walsh. Additionally, Bo Godbold who also lives next to Shell Key Preserve recently witnessed two manatees that almost got grounded due to the closure of the pass, “I do worry as the dolphins and manatees no longer have access to open water”.

The Shell Key Preserve is a 1,800-acre ecological preserve located immediately south of Pass-A-Grille Beach and St. Pete Beach. It was established to protect sensitive marine habitats and includes one of the county’s largest undeveloped barrier islands (Shell Key) as well as numerous mangrove islands and expansive seagrass beds. Shell Key has been designated as one of the state’s most important areas for shorebird nesting and wintering and it serves as an important study area for these species. It also is an important area for recreation. The Shell Key Preserve is managed by Pinellas County.

Community Support Urgently Needed for

Robofest World Championships need donations to fund air tickets, hotels, meals, etc. We are aiming to do this with no tax dollars but with a lot of COMMUNITY SUPPORT. We need your help to allow them to continue their learning of math and technology, and perhaps the biggest lesson to be learned; TEAMWORK.

by Jim Parent Our SPB Community Center Robofest Kids have done it again! If you remember, in their first year of existence as a team, they performed so well in local competitions that they qualified to participate in the Robofest World Championships in Detroit, Michigan. With your generous help we were able to fund their trip (air, hotel, meals, etc.) using NO SPB tax dollars. The education of our kids, our next generation of leaders, is something that benefits us all. This year they have done it again. For 2 days, our ability to help send the St. Pete Beach Community Center kids to compete in the Robofest World Championships in Detroit was in doubt.

Last year, as one of the youngest teams to compete for the World Championship, they succeeded in capturing 11th place. To do so they performed better than many teams from the USA and many teams who came from outside the US. The kids are in 5th through 7th grade. We did it last year. Let’s keep it going. Our new St. Pete Beach Magnet School is called a “Center of Innovation and Digital Learning” by the Pinellas County School District. Let’s continue to help St. Pete Beach lead the way with INNOVATION, for this next generation, by supporting things like the SPB Community Center’s Robotics Program! To help, you can contribute with a check, made out to SPB Community Center and drop it off at the Center, or at City Hall or mail it to: SPB Robotics Program St. Pete Beach Community Center, 155 Corey Avenue, St. Pete Beach, FL 33706 Or call Jim at 727-542-7097 or email JimPSPB@gmail.com and it will be pick up.

Now, after meeting with the St. Pete Beach city administration, the possibility of competing in Detroit is back ON!! In fact, several fine businesses in our city have offered donations since that meeting.

You can also use the donation site set up on CROWDWISE at: https://www.crowdwise.com/ sendourkidstotherobofestworld championships/fundraiser/jimparent

Time is short and we need your help… NOW! The kids leave May 14th and we

If you want to learn more about the entire Robofest activities you can see

it here: http://www.robofest.net/ This year they have qualified to have not one, but three teams compete. One ‘Game’ team and two ‘Bottle Sumo teams.’ This doesn’t substantially change the expense of sending them because the instruction they are receiving this year is structured as small two or three person teams with some people participating to both types of competitions. The two categories our kids are qualified to compete in are the “Game” and “Bottle Sumo”. In this year’s game the robot is to bowl, throw, shoot, or kick a tennis ball to knock down four pins (500 ml water bottles). If pins are knocked down, the highest point value will be awarded. If the ball just moves pins (not knocked down) partial points will be awarded. If the ball ends up in the Pin Side Area, some points are also given. In addition, the robot is required to report the height of the black rectangle shape on a letter size paper in millimeters. The location of Pins 1 and 2 will be unveiled. The location of Pins 3 and 4 is based on the rectangle height measurement. THE KIDS CONCEPTULIZE, BUILD, PROGRAM, AND DEBUG THEIR OWN AUTONOMOUS ROBOTS! You can watch a games animation here: https://youtube/ujT_-821OOQ In bottle SUMO. two robots compete in a ring to either push a bottle off the stage first or be the last robot standing! Let’s bring home the gold to St. Pete Beach! Some have already donated! We appreciate that! Now get your friends, relatives and strangers on the street to do so too! Please HELP!

R EAL ESTATE JIM BEGGINS - The Property Wizard

Broker - CENTURY 21 Beggins Enterprises

SELL NOW, OR BUILD ON OUR BARRIER ISLANDS There are 16 individual towns on our Pinellas barrier Islands. From the south, Tierra Verde and Isla Del Sol, north for 27 miles to Clearwater beach and Island estates and 12 more in between. These towns are different from the mainland Pinellas towns because the land is generally much more expensive than the structures. That’s one reason why there are so many condos. Those who own vacation homes average less than 6 weeks of use per year while paying the expenses for 52 weeks. This isn’t practical for many, anymore. Most of our 2nd home clients want to earn income when they’re not here. In some of our towns legal short term rentals are being promoted in designated areas. Many of them pay the expenses with 60% occupancy with over 20 weeks of free or low cost vacations available for the owners. A re-vitalization of our beach towns is underway with the old being replaced with the new. This can’t continue without a fresh supply of old property to replace with new. Here’s where you may come in. Below are some reasons people sell.

26

MAY 2015

ParadiseNewsFL.com

• Supply of property is low, prices are high. Supply is increasing. • A lot of us are old and our big house is too big. The trend is downsizing.

• We can build new homes on free and clear lots, with little or no money down. • There are new programs where we can rent with an option to buy.

• Our kids are too busy paying off student loans to visit us. They don’t want our big houses.

• We can sell now and buy a home with income, low insurance and no electric bill.

• We’re still supporting our kids. The younger generations are less affluent.

In my opinion, there is no better overall value than Florida Beach real estate. Since the land is so valuable, let’s work together to make it look prettier and be more functional. We hope you are part of our beach renaissance.

• Keeping 2 homes is too expensive. • Many of us would rather rent than buy for flexibility & affordability. • Interest rates are low for qualified buyers. Qualification is getting tougher. •20% per year flood insurance increases are too high. • It’s unwise to put a lot of money into renovating a flood prone property. • Building costs are more affordable with larger builders now on beaches.

All the Best, Jim “Property Wizard” Beggins, broker, CENTURY 21 Beggins Enterprises, with 11 offices serving Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Since any real estate view can be supported with facts, I will inform you to the best of my ability so you can unconfuse the facts to your personal advantage. I think I can use my “hands on” experience in Florida real estate since 1970 to achieve your desired outcome. Please let me know how I’m doing. 727.251.8144 Cell JimBeggins@C21BE.com

GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law

BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE… One of the many results of the global economic catastrophe which the Wall Street Bankers brought us is a global increase in people hoping to make their fortune off their fellow man through the good old-fashion con job. As I tell my clients (especially my older ones), “As you walk down the street, there’s a con man hanging from every branch of every tree.” One category of con job we see nearly every day is the unlicensed home improvement contractor, who shows up at your door uninvited, and somehow not only convinces you to let them perform major construction work, but manages to get paid upfront for much, if not all of the cost. Of course, little if any work ever gets done, they just disappear with the money. They can’t be traced, so just get in line to report them to law enforcement. Then there’s the whole range of internet, e-mail Nigerian cons, ranging from various elected officials or members of the “royal family”who need you to help them get large amounts of money out of the country (usually more

than ten million dollars or, more commonly Euros, which will always involve you needing to provide them with just a “small”amount of cash or just your bank account or credit card number to “open up the pipeline”), to requests for you to help them invest their money in America (again, often in excess of ten million dollars, of which you can keep 10 or perhaps 20%). A lot of the time, their late father worked in the gold or diamond business, so naturally, there’s lots of money to be disposed of, which you can surely help with… Then, of course, there’s the appeal to people’s loneliness. Russian, oriental, Thai or other nationalities of ladies looking for someone “stable and reliable”like you to marry, so naturally they don’t mind that you are so much older than their tender 18 or 20 years of age. Lately I have been getting friend requests on Facebook from young ladies. When you check their profiles, you find that they are brand new users, with lots of cleavage in their very few pictures, and no details about work or education. Funny thing, all their other friends are middle-aged men…

MAY 2015

Inshore- Due to the warming waters, the tarpon have made their return to our area. We have started seeing a few inside the bay, pass and on the beaches but the further we move into May, more and more will arrive till the tarpon run is in full effect at the end of May. The snook will follow the tarpon and start heading out the passes onto the beaches. They cruise between the first and second sandbars looking for large shrimp and live bait. Our favorite times to target them are sunrise and sunset so you can also get the pompano that bite well that time of the day. Speckled trout will start their spawn soon too, and can be found on the edges of the flats and mouths of the passes busting the summer time white bait. Flounder are also found in similar areas on the sandy bottom looking for baits on or along the bottom. Mackerel and kingfish will be moving onto the beaches squeezing in closer to the beaches following the white bait’s move inshore. Near Shore- The snapper bite will only improve with the warming waters in our area. Most snapper species will actually start their annual spawns this time of the year which makes them feed aggressively and get bunched up on local ledges, wrecks and hard bottom structures. The red grouper bite will also improve as we move into the warmer time of the year. As the water warms the grouper species get very active and tend to become more mobile. We like to drift this time of the year which helps us show our bait to more fish over the large rock bottom areas with

pot-holes, sea fans, cracks and ledges. The kingfish are the dominant pelagic species this time of year but cobia are around too. Plenty of Spanish mackerel can be found mixed in with the kingfish too! ‘Sailfish will be seen around as well as ripping through bait schools, but they will be the most rare pelagic fish caught due to anglers being unprepared for such a wild, fast and rare catch. Due to this possibility, it’s imperative to keep a live bait rod rigged and handy with plenty of line in the spool if you see one swim by your boat. Offshore- The mangrove snapper spawn kicked off in the month of March making them voracious feeders and densely populated on the larger structure. Gag grouper will become a nuisance since they will be feeding well along with the red grouper very aggressively. Due to this, be sure to bring venting tools on your offshore trips! Amberjack will close in June and July in federal waters so May is your last month to go get them for sixty days or so. Last year in May we caught a 107lb jack so go get yours before the month ends! Blackfin tuna will be around on the new moons feeding on the live squid that become active in new moons. Sailfish will be most populated in the offshore waters and become a real possibility during the month of May so be sure to take the time to troll between spots in the deep blue offshore waters. Also, that pre-rigged bait rod on standby becomes even more crucial due to this. By Dylan and Captain Mark Hubbard

TAMPA BAY WATCH partnered with Coca-Cola n celebration of Earth Day, Tampa Bay Watch partnered with Coca-Cola for a community-based oyster creation project to install new oyster shell communities on the northern shore line of McKay Bay. Tampa Bay Watch’s Community Oyster Reef Enhancement project at McKay Bay is supported by a generous grant of $25,000 from the Coca-Cola Foundation. “Sustainability and giving back to our community is at the heart of our business and what better day to show it than on Earth Day,” said Jeff Ortmeier, General Manager, Coca-Cola Refreshments Central Florida. “Through our partnership with Tampa Bay Watch, our associates worked to restore McKay Bay and help improve water quality through the organization’s Community Oyster Reef Enhancement project. This type of project is part of Coca-Cola’s 2020 goal to safely return to communities and nature an amount of water equivalent to what we use in our finished beverages and their production.”

Approximately thirty volunteers from Coca-Cola Refreshments assisted with the project. Earth Day is a great opportunity to focus on restoring our beautiful environment. The project involved shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags, and then transporting and installing the shell bags to create a series of oyster reefs. The goal of the project was to help provide hard bottom habitats for fish and wildlife resources, promote water quality improvements in McKay Bay and reestablish oyster communities. “Tampa Bay Watch has long been impressed with Coca Cola’s commitment to giving back to the community,” said Peter Clark, President of Tampa Bay Watch.“Earth Day was the perfect occasion for corporate and community members to volunteer at a local level to improve our local environment.” McKay Bay is an ecologically important estuary located in the heart of a heavily industrialized area in the City of

Tampa. McKay Bay provides habitat to over 200 bird species and historically supported healthy fisheries. The bay has suffered from many years of developmental impacts, including dredge and fill construction, urbanized and industrial stormwater runoff, industrial contamination and dredged material disposal. The goal of Tampa Bay Watch’s Community Oyster Reef Enhancement (CORE) program is to increase the oyster population in Tampa Bay and at the same time, provide habitats for small organisms, prevent erosion, improve water quality and promote fish and wildlife habitats. In addition, this project benefits the Tampa Bay community by promoting environmental awareness and offering hands-on experience in habitat restoration. Visit our website at www.tampabaywatch.org for more information about the project. Tampa Bay Watch is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) - call us at 727-867-8166.

Fort De Soto’s Fort 1900 In order to protect Florida’s coast and the port of Tampa Bay, the US government started construction on a 275foot wharf extending into Tampa Bay with accompanying barracks in 1899. They were ready to start laying the foundation for the Fort. The Fort was named Fort De Soto and officially became a sub-post of Fort Dade on Egmont Key on April 4, 1900. The construction was completed under budget for $155,000 a month later on May 10, 1900. The Army closed Fort Dade and Fort De Soto in 1922 and offered Fort De Soto up for private sale in 1928 after the state, county and city governments declined to buy the land at its appraised value of $192,000. Still there were no buyers for this pristine Gulf island. The army kept the land and it served various purposes but was never militarized. Pinellas County purchased the bulk of Fort De Soto in 1963 and began its refurbishment in 1977. Read more on our website paradisenewsfl.com.

Gasparilla Pirate Fest 1904 Officially started by the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, the annual Gasparilla tradition began in 1904 when the society editor of the Tampa Tribune, Miss Louise Francis Dodge, conspired with George Hardee to promote the City of Tampa and its May Day celebration. Secret meetings led to a ‘Krewe’ of about 40 people renting costumes from New Orleans and ‘capturing the city’ during its May Day celebration on May 4, 1904. The Gasparilla tradtion was born. The Krewe took to the water in 1911 and bought their own ship in 1937- the Jose Gasparilla I. Read more at ymkg.com/.

COVER STORY by Jean Shakas Four years ago this month Paradise NEWS introduced its readers to Al Konetzni, then an impressive 96-year-old local retiree, met through a chance encounter. He was a longtime artist and “Idea Man” for Walt Disney Productions, where he earned entry to the Disney Hall of Fame and was named a “Disney Legend” in 1999. Family and friends will be celebrating his 100th birthday on May 19, 2015. What a life he has led so far!

his is a story about a life well lived, about an optimistic artist who had a number of lucky breaks. Much of his “luck” was self-inspired, however, as his motto has always been “If you want it, ask for it”. Luckily this ability to shine an optimistic light on his passion for art and merchandising plus his raw artistic talents have allowed him to become a “go to” type individual. He’s always needed to feel as though he had a good day when he solved a problem or did some good for someone on a daily basis. In addition, he was able to “zero in” his brain power on leveraging his top skills. Adeline, Al’s wife of 60 years, allowed him to take this road by unburdening Al of many of the myriad activities needed to be done around the house. over 6 decades of marriage, she enabled Al’s success. Al showed an early interest in art as a young boy in Brooklyn. By age nine, while most children were asking for toys and games, he asked only for crayons and drawing pencils for Christmas. Al’s mind was always thinking creative thoughts. His imagination was incredible. At age 10, Al wanted to draw some of his favorite comic strip characters. His family did not have a lot of money, so instead of using art paper, he used the back of an old poster. His parents were supportive of his ‘special gift’ throughout their lives. While working as an artist in the advertising department of the Gertz Company on Long Island, he attended Pratt Institute of Art. He eventually became art director of the Pal Personna Blade Co., where he developed the company’s Pal Man character, featured on product packages

night light and the Mickey Phonograph, Lever Brothers for the Mickey Mouse toothbrush, and Bradley Time for Mickey Mouse watches and clocks. He was also responsible for the development and licensing of the now collectible Pez Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck candy dispensers. Many of these companies he signed up through his ideas and sketches are still associated with Disney and paying royalties. During his Disney career, Konetzni was well known for his most famous design, “The Disney School Bus LunchBox”, which sold over nine million boxes! It’s one of the most popular school lunch boxes ever designed and marketed. In October of 1953, Konetzni’s career took off when he officially joined Walt Disney Productions in their New York City office on Madison Avenue. Shortly afterward in 1957, he and his wife, Adeline, with their four children, Al Jr., Douglas, Gary and Karen moved to Pleasantville, NY. They lived there until his Disney retirement. From 1953 - 1980, Al had 27 great years with Disney. Konetzni says, “I was hired as an Idea Man to come up with children’s toys and games. I always felt honored to be called an “Idea Man” for Disney. Konetzni became a marketing account executive, designed and marketed products, even soliciting major companies to become licensees of the company. Al understood the power of being able to combine “on the cuff” artistic know how and the value of charming, serving and keeping clients, creating the role of the Account Executive for Disney. His lessons during his Disney days were that challenging, goals combined with perseverance lead to great achievement. He coordinated licensing with such U.S. industry giants as General Electric for the Mickey Mouse

After retiring from Disney in 1981, Al and his wife Adeline moved and lived in Sarasota, FL. He served as a merchandise consultant for Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus for two years. During that time, he developed merchandise for the joint Disney and Ringling Brothers touring ice show, “Disney on Ice.” Al was such a creative individual that he began drawing all types of golf cartoons. He drew so many cartoons that he decided to publish the best-selling cartoon book “Double Bogey”, a hilarious look at the humorous foibles of golfers everywhere. Konetzni was involved in many activities related to the Disney characters and also with several charities in the Bradenton/ Sarasota area, donating numerous pieces of artwork to benefit charities such as: North River Care Pregnancy Center; Child Protection Agency, Comic Festival, Wine Festival, and more. In supporting charity work he asked the question of himself time and again; “What is the product and to whom, where, when and how can I sell it to benefit good causes?” In 1999, Roy Disney and Michael Eisner (CEO)

of Disney named Konetzni, marketer and creative artist, a Disney Legend (in the company of famous stars such as Annette Funicello, Angela Landsbury, Julie Andrews, Fred Mac Murray, Mary Costa, Dick Nunis and Tim Allen) during a ceremony at The Walt Disney Studios. They were all recognized for their contributions of creative achievement. These individuals were awarded the Disney Legend Statue Award, which represents imagination to create a new dream, gift of skill, discipline and craftsmanship, and imagination, the power of an idea. The venue provided a wonderful Konetzni Family Reunion. Adeline, Al’s bride and all four children and their spouses were able to attend the “legend installation” ceremony at Disney’s Buena Vista Studios in California. The event provided a real opportunity for the next generation of Konetzni’s to honor their Dad, and as importantly their Mom for all her marvelous support to her family over the years.

In 2004, Disney presented a challenge to artists and celebrities to design a unique 6 1/2 foot tall Mickey Mouse sculpture that would be auctioned off for charity at a later date. The statues weighed more than 700 pounds. Celebrities asked to participate ranged from Regis and Kelly, former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk. Konetzni’s design was among the few selected. He put his classic lunchbox design in the palm of Mickey’s outstretched hand for the large statue and put “PS 121” the name of his elementary school in Queens, NY on the stand and set his newest creation off to auction. His statue was on display at both U.S. theme parks and cities throughout the U.S. After touring the USA, the “Celebrate Mickey InspEARation” statues went up for auction at Sotheby’s in New York on September 28, 2005. The statues raised a total of $614,500 for several charities. Al’s “Back to School” statue was the second largest seller, raising $54,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation as his charity.

R: Al, with wife Adeline and Mickey 10 foot statue, which sold for $54,000 at Sotheby's Auction. The proceeds went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Al is proud of his family and their accomplisments. His beautiful wife Adeline passed away in November 2004. She was the love of his life and he, to this day, refers to their 60 years together frequently. “When you can look back on your life with pride for your career accomplishments and the marvelous support provided by your Bride and children and also reflect on the success of your grandchildren and great-grandchildren, it’s pretty easy to be satisfied and happy”. Being happy seems to be one key to living a long life! Al was involved at the time with the US Postal Service Customer Advisory council (CAC). When the Postal Service introduced a series of Disney Stamps in 2004, he participated. It was then that he met Jean Shakas, Customer Relations Coordinator for the Postal Service. Al remained actively involved for the next four years with the Disney series of stamps and he donated numerous pieces of artwork, all proceeds going to the Child Protection Center in Sarasota. Jean Shakas, now Postmaster of Cortez, FL, and her husband James, a St. Petersburg Police Department detective, have been and are still superb friends and supporters of Al’s. “My husband and I were fortunate to have become so close to Al. He is such a humble and wonderful man. When we go out in public he jokingly introduces me as his press secretary and Jim as his bodyguard,” says Jean, who made a custom character stamp for Al, which he treasures. Al has been fortunate over the years to have had strong support from his family and many friends. His daughter Karen and daughter-in-law Missy researched numerous alternatives in the Bradenton area to find Al his perfect home at Westminster Towers. His son Doug visits regularly taking him to some fancy restaurants and spending qualtiy time. This support and his desire to use his artistic talents have kept his mind sharp and body fit. He often speaks with pride of Westminster Towers friends, and others from Peridia, where he moved from.

Al says, “I am very blessed to have such wonderful friends, especially Jim and Jean who have become two of my best friends. They have been very supportive over the years and keep me young at heart. They always include me during the holidays when my family is unable to be with me, and I enjoy their company along with their friends. They are sincere and genuine people.” Konetzni says, “Doing charity work with children’s organizations comes with the territory and is a rewarding and fun part of my life. Al continues to draw a cartoon each month for the residents having birthdays at his independent living facility in Bradenton. When asked how he would define happiness. Al says, “Having seen my family progress so successfully, having 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, traveling around the world, playing golf, and having wonderful friends. I have had a wonderful life, and I continue coming up with creative ideas to share,” says Konetzni. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he says “As the artist who drew for children around the world and made them happy.” PN

lower than a tennis net. Two or four players hit a ball, about the size and feel of a whiffle ball, with light weight paddles, a little larger than ping pong paddles, over the net. According to the USA Pickleball Assoc. (USAPA), Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The major reason for this growth is that Pickleball is a great social activity and something spouses, families, and even grandkids and grandparents can do together. It’s a game that you can play and have fun, laugh, and get good at right away. You’re going to keep doing that, aren’t you? Clinics to teach people how to play and where to find equipment will be available at the Treasure Island Golf and Tennis Center located, 10315 Paradise Boulevard. This energy will surely emphasize whatever has been going on, offer an opportunity to transform the situation and then allow the completion to unfold. What are your values and how do you feel about your resources on all levels? Endings may take place based on these facts. Venus enters sensitive, family oriented Cancer on the 8th as our attention turns to matters close to home. We want to hang on to who, and what we have now; despite any challenges presented. We are more emotional than logical now. Mars entering Gemini on the 11th will help us come up with many ideas as well as the energy to implement them over the next few weeks.

PARADISE NEWS SUBSCRIPTION

The New Moon in stable, practical Taurus occurs on the 18th just hours before Mercury stations retrograde. We may feel like getting started or that any new situation is based in going backward. Sometimes things will come to the surface to be finished first. The retrograde occurs in the sign of both transportation and communication; so prepare accordingly, for delays, set backs and misinterpretations. On a more pleasant side, the security concerns of Taurus can be reviewed, and renegotiated with quick-witted Gemini skills of thought. The vibrant Sun also enters the sign of the twins on the 21st. A need for variety and an inner restlessness prevails as we spend the rest of this month exploring many paths in the physical, mental and spiritual sense.

TAURUS: Full moon spotlight shines onto relationships. Create balance between family, partner and personal needs. Enjoy siblings, conversations. Your personal year starts now; do things your way and in your own time.

SCORPIO: The full moon beams glow brightly from your sign! What will they reveal about your life right now? Boost your vitality; enjoy a trip away. Review financial matters. Accept endings and see newness begin as a result.

GEMINI: Health, work and duties are on center stage. You can make changes and let go of what doesn’t work. You take charge of things and review your direction. Income is enhanced. Introspection brings clarity.

SAGITTARIUS: Private matters come to a peak. Health and work issues have been brewing. Reconnect with partner constructively not combatively. Resources are gained. Responsibilities are realized with new doors opening.

CANCER: Children, creativity and romantic love have your attention. You figure things out and work toward goals in private. Venus gives you favor with others all month. A new plan comes with evaluation of need vs. want.

CAPRICORN: Friends and future plans are on center stage! Your partner is agreeable and pleasant. Review health concerns and make your own decisions. New cycle in healing, habits and work that make a difference.

LEO: Home and family matters come to a climax with full moon force. You need private time to recharge. Reconnecting with friends and social gatherings fill your calendar. New cycle weighs current status; future plans.

AQUARIUS: Career or your position in life is on center stage! You will see where you stand with others. Resolve issues with children; revive a hobby, get romantic! New leaf is turned with family. Work is enjoyable.

VIRGO: Conversations can reveal much. Resolve and reframe situations. Career and status is re-evaluated and you are ready to move forward with goals. Enjoy time with friends. New understanding and clarity is achieved.

PISCES: Travel, education and legal matters are accented. Health and help from others is a factor. Reconnect to home and family; focus energy to gain order. A new direction is required. Creative and romantic areas are favored.

LIBRA: Financial issues are in the spotlight as you weigh options. Legal matters get reviewed; action. You enjoy popularity in career with superiors. New interests in learning and travel; return to a favorite getaway and enjoy!

ARIES: Finances and resources get your attention and issues come to a peak. Resolve misunderstandings; communicate clearly and refrain from discord. Home and family time is favored. New methods for daily life.

Power Outage Tips Supplied by City of Seminole Fire & Rescue With the warmer months coming on bringing with it our routine thunderstorm activity, residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages and the resulting inconveniences and disruptions that occur. Some of these power outages could even be long term. Preparing for power outages will enable you and your family to be safe and secure by following these simple steps. • Fill plastic containers with water and place them in the refrigerator and freezer. Leave about an inch of space inside each one to account for expansion. Chilled or frozen water will help keep food cold during a temporary power outage. • Be aware that most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist. • Keep your car tank at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps. • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it. Garage doors can be heavy, so know that you may need help in lifting it. • Keep a key to your house with you if you regularly use the garage as the primary means of entering your home, in case the garage door will not open. • Seasonal storms and power outages are common place be prepared and listen to the media for current weather alerts to stay safe, and stay indoors when thunder and lightning are in the area. The same is true for your golf game when you slice into the rough or sink a submarine. Your mind must refocus on your pre-shot routine, free of emotional debris. Your mental peace and visual clarity is crucial when it comes to clearly Defining and Visualizing your ball’s path for successful golf. Advantage Performance Therapy affords every golfer the leading edge in this arena. Now you can be free to breeze right through any golf storm you may encounter. When we are under pressure to perform, we need our minds to be clear and focused. Emotionally, we must be free from the past and be present with clear perception, intention and composure. This golf “presensing,” if you will, opens the door to “The Zone!” When we are disturbed by a lost ball, physical or mental stress can bring disruption to the normal processes of the body or mind. This disturbance can remove us from “The Zone.” What is the remedy? We need a way to return to the zone by being less affected by stress and disappointment. Our body must be in balance during the ups and downs of the game. Advantage Performance Golf can supply this remedy. Control your game by getting into “Golf Balance” prior to your practice and your game. Your game will be much easier to control when you get your perception clarified and your stress circuits balanced before you step on to the course. Call Advantage Performance Therapy: 727-259-8232 for your Complimentary Golf Therapy Consultation and learn about the missing link in successful golf today! TAMPA TECH FIRM LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE APP Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club First to Have New iPhone & Android Application Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club will launch a first of its kind mobile application for members and the public this week on the iTunes and Google Play stores. The app features a GPS range finder, live satellite weather, a food and beverage ordering system and other interactive features to make a round at the club more enjoyable for members and guests alike. The club will also be able to keep its members up to date on course conditions, specials and more through the application’s messaging feature. “We’re excited to be the first club in our area to have our own mobile application,” notes Star Garcia, Membership Director of Isla Del Sol. “It’s going to be a differentiator for prospective members and an exciting benefit for our existing members.” The technology was designed and developed locally by CourseDriver, LLC of Tampa, Florida. The company plans to license its technology to golf and country clubs nationwide this year. Gabriel Aluisy, cofounder of CourseDriver, said of the launch, “We’re thrilled to finally bring this app to market and have a local club as our flagship. The private club industry is experiencing a dramatic shift in its membership base and clubs that adapt to technological innovations show their members they are dedicated to improving the club experience. This is a critical aspect of member acquisition and retention at a time when there is more and more competition.”

FINAL Word by Julian Fant THE “BOTTLENOSE” ....A Most Remarkable Mammal! s a lad growing up in the true “Old Florida” of the 30’s and 40’s era, it was inevitable that my love of salt water fishing, swimming and boating (inspired by my Dad), and our proximity to the ocean, it’s beaches, bays and tidal marshes would begin an association with these intelligent mammals which continues to this day. My earliest encounters with “porpoises” (as they were called in and around St. Augustine) was while swimming, fishing and boating and as a beach lifeguard. Pre-teen friends and I were probably the first to watch the training of the first porpoise to appear in shows at Marine Studios, a giant marine attraction being built south of St. Augustine. It took place in a tidal lagoon in which most of us “kids” swam during summer vacation from school. This pioneer performer

was soon joined by others, and a female classmate and her pet dog also rode a paddle board towed by a dolphin. In the wild, I have personally observed the “herding” of schools of baitfish in vast tidal marshes north of my hometown. This cooperative “herding” continued until all visible baitfish were consumed! We have also seen them flip speedy mullet high into the air with their noses, and consume them as they descended. Decades later, on another coast and in different waters, we still enjoy watching them as they cavort, mate and interact with humans and pets. Whether they are called “bottlenose, porpoise or dolphin”....they continue to show us “humanoids” just how wonderful and intelligent they are!
