We are blessed to have strong support from the real estate industry, which has had an extremely busy year, thanks to record low interest rates and unprecedented demand from people who may have accelerated their retirement plans to find their place in the sun. Relocations are accelerating from many of the areas that have been fueling west Florida’s growth over the past century. With a relatively fixed supply of homes for sale, realtors have been overwhelmed by people looking for places here.

It is a scary time to be in business anywhere in the world. It is no different here in the St. Petersburg area, where partial year residents and winter visitors escaping the cold make the next four months an essential time for local businesses to feel the seasonal surge that sustains them for the rest of the year. By now, we know most of the Canadians are not coming this season. The fourth quarter business survey data from the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce has some sobering facts about business in the area.

• Only 40% of all small business owners believe their businesses can continue to operate indefinitely without having to shut down permanently; • 62% of small businesses fear that the worst is still to come with COVID-19’s economic impact; • 74% of all small business owners say they need further government assistance to weather the storm; • Combating COVID-19 and the economy (44% each) are top small business priorities for Biden’s administration.

Last year marked a quarter century of Paradise NEWS’ service to our barrier island and nearby waterfront communities, with steady expansion from St. Pete Beach to neighbors in all directions except west. Last year we rolled out an expansion from the barrier islands to downtown and waterfront communities on St. Petersburg’s eastern shore, an effort we are repeating this season.

Coastal Home Advisors real estate brokerage office has opened between Publix and CVS at Dolphin Village Shopping Center. Keith and Tina Slater have done a great job on décor, including the nicest stained concrete floor I have ever seen in the lobby.

Friends of the St. Pete Beach Library advised that the opening of the renovated library in its historic building will be delayed until March 2021 to allow the parking lot to be refinished after the construction crew is done using it as a staging area. Tim Dorsey’s new book Tropic of Stupid is scheduled to be released Jan. 21. Tim will not be touring this year for obvious reasons. Local author Wendy Wax also has a new book coming. The Break-Up Book Club is due out on May 18.

A huge sculpture by Mark Aeling has just been installed on the St. Petersburg Pier–and it’s a life-sized Benoist Airboat.

This sculpture commemorates the world’s first-ever commercial flight, which traversed Tampa Bay as the first flight of the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line. Piloted by Tony Jannus, the Benoist Airboat took St. Petersburg mayor Pheil to Tampa for $200, a huge sum at the time. The cross-bay service continued for several months. A reenactment was attempted on the 100th anniversary.

CAVEAT EMPTOR! I am sorry to say that we keep seeing unwary buyers who end up in terrible jams because they failed to fully protect themselves.

high-rise condominium that was actually condemned due to construction defects, but not until months after closing, and after the buyer had spent huge sums remodeling.

It is true that Florida law gives buyers the benefit of various consumer protection laws, but, for one reason or another, they often fail to take full advantage of them.

The amazing thing is that the seller had received notices of board meetings to talk about the problem, as well as an engineering report going into depth about the great cost of correcting it, all before the seller ever listed the apartment for sale. Yet no mention of the issue was ever made to the buyer.

Many will tell you that is not the law any more where Florida residential real estate is concerned, because of the consumer protection laws that we have now, but I am here to tell you that is HOGWASH!

For example, Florida’s condominium law gives buyers the right to rescind a contract to buy a (resale) condo for up to three days after they receive the complete condo documents package. Yet, in our experience, most buyers never actually receive the complete package! Very few people even know what all should be included. They may ask, but that doesn’t mean they ever get everything. And yet, they usually end up checking the box that acknowledges that they did.

Real estate is the detail business.

Every piece of property has a long history, and many, many potential issues. There is a lot of information to absorb with regard to any one property, and it takes your full attention and diligent effort to make sure you don’t end up making a huge mistake.

Another example: sellers of residential property have a legal duty to disclose to buyers any latent (hidden) defects in the property of which the seller is aware.

Yet we have seen many examples of enormous problems that the buyers never dreamed they were buying into, such as a

ANOTHER YEAR, AND MORE CHALLENGES IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY… Hard to believe that 2021 is now here, and Santa is back at the North Pole resting up for next year. Spring is just around the corner, and many families that come through our model center each year have now decided that it’s time to build their dream home here along the Pinellas beach communities. Again, new home costs have increased due to inflation, supply & demand, and unfortunately in 2021 it is predicted that another round of increases will take place, now due to constant FEMA changes and a new building code revision that is just now being put into place (2020 7th Edition, effective 12/31/2020).

After the devastating pictures that we all saw with recent storms over the last couple years, it only stands to reason that the building industry cannot be allowed to construct homes using yesterday’s codes. When the big one hits Pinellas, we will see the same devastation from the existing homes built decades ago. It’s been 100 years since a direct hit hurricane came ashore in Pinellas County, but the odds are very probable of course. I hope to have 25 to 30 years left to chase my grandchildren around, and I hope that I do not witness a Pinellas direct hit, but the odds are probably going to catch up to us.

Specifically, the talk in the industry is that FEMA will enact even stronger standards for homes, for new construction and major remodeling. Some beach jurisdictions themselves are enacting more stringent codes than FEMA requires. The so called “50% Rule” may become history, so remodeling homes using this loophole may go the way of the dinosaurs. I can’t say I’m against that, seeing that if/when the storm comes, those family dollars now being spent for

remodeling will be wasted as they will then be required to start over with an elevated home, at tomorrow’s costs.

It’s also predicted that this tourist season, a record number of snowbirds will become homeowners along the beach communities.

The trends are high with people moving to Florida due to the Covid pandemic and ultra-high tax laws in many other populous states.

I personally enjoy seeing the new homes being constructed here by various builders in the many Pinellas communities. And thankfully, these newly constructed homes will weather the storm, being constructed under newer stricter codes to protect the homeowners investment and offering extremely lower flood insurance rates being that they meet the current code heights. Then too, these families that are now constructing new homes will appreciate many years of family enjoyment living in a new more modern home, as well as the peace of mind knowing the security of a new home, raised above the flood plain and constructed with today’s more stringent standards.

Florida’s New Minimum Wage Will Have A Far-Ranging Impact

With the passage of Amendment 2

by 60.8% of Florida voters on November 3, the state will have the first mandated minimum wage that will rise from the current $8.56 to $15.00 an hour in 2026.

Notably, Florida did not have a state minimum wage until 2004.

Currently, that base rate gets a cost of living adjustment every year. It is currently $8.56 an hour, compared to the federal level of $7.25 that has not changed since 2009. But some said it is not enough.

“The $8.56 per hour rate is too low,” said Ben Pollara, senior advisor at Florida for a Fair Wage, which led the campaign for the change. “People who were going to work in a full-time job deserve the dignity of being able to put food on the table for themselves and their family,” he added.

The new official minimum wage is expected to immediately help 1.5 million Floridians. That includes people who work at cash registers, stock shelves and clean up at places like nursing homes, according to Pollara. He said, “Our hope is it’s good for working people and the impact is not felt that much by small business.”

The group is led by John Morgan, a Florida lawyer who put in $6 million of his own money to get the issue on the ballot and approved. He called Florida’s current $8.56 minimum wage a “slave wage” in late September at a forum. He also took issue with the COVID-19 argument. “You can’t just be blaming 9/11 and COVID and the Great Recession for all your woes,” Morgan quipped.

You have a duty to share your good luck and with all the money I’ve made, there are a lot of things I’m passionate about – food, clothing, housing, medicine among them.

labels and party affiliation away, people can work together for a really good cause like a fair and living minimum wage.

“I don’t believe there will be that much of an impact on small business, as they will have time to adapt to the situation. I am more than willing to pay 50 cents more for a hamburger in return for lifting all those folks out of poverty.”

FRLA & Florida Chamber Response But others, such as the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA), have expressed concern about negative effects the new policy could have. Florida has lost 336,000 jobs due to COVID-19, according to an economic analysis cited by the industry group. This change could lead to another 158,000 jobs going away.

“We are proud of our small business owners and employees from across the state who came together to fight this amendment. We have seen too many places across the country that have implemented this wage hike, only to see workers who were promised more money instead lose their jobs altogether.

We are worried about our small businesses and the Floridians who will lose their jobs.”

Added Richard Turner, Senior VP, Legal & Legislative Affairs, who represented FRLA at the November 2019 Minimum Wage Panel, “We feel it’s up to each individual member to meet the new standard minimum wage and we are working on some approaches to the situation.”

In the wake of the passage of Amendment 2 – a $7 million ballot proposal designed to help drive voter turnout, the Florida Chamber of Commerce laid out concerns for Florida’s future.

With the passage of Amendment 2, Florida is now the only state with a constitutionally-mandated minimum wage. The forced cost of living adjustments mean Florida will have the highest minimum wage in the nation long after 2026. Further, studies show this amendment will cause Florida to lose hundreds of thousands of jobs, drive up inflation, and cost Florida more than $700 million in lost revenue, the Chamber predicts.

“Amendment 2 is bad for Florida and even worse for Floridians,” said Mark Wilson, president and CEO, Florida Chamber of Commerce, in an official election night press release. “In these difficult times, this costly amendment hurts the very local businesses trying to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For the past year, we have unified Florida’s business community in an effort to educate Floridians about the negative consequences of the Mark Wilson, President, governed mandate. Now that Florida Chamber of Commerce the Amendment has passed, it is important to highlight these five major concerns as we work to secure Florida’s future: the cost of living on seniors and families will increase; Florida will lose hundreds of thousands of jobs; there will be a rapid expansion of work related automation; certain businesses will relocate to neighboring states for experienced labor at a more competitive rate and on-the-job training initiatives will decrease; and certain employees will see a reduction in benefits.

“After personal injury trial lawyers spent millions trying to make life more expensive for Floridians and kill opportunities for teens and those in the entry level job market, it is no surprise that Floridians were tricked into believing this amendment will help our state.

“The Florida Chamber of Commerce will continue to work towards securing Florida’s future and aggressively oppose mandates that are wrong for Florida. We have nearly 900,000 children in poverty in Florida and thanks to the special interests behind this constitutional scam, hundreds of thousands of them won’t have opportunities they would have had.”

Local Chambers’ Comments Doug Izzo, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber governent affairs director, told Paradise News in mid-December, “I confirmed with the state that Amendment 2 to increase the Minimum Wage does take enabling legislative action. That action will take place this legislative session. The Amendment does not require the first increase until September 2021.

“For implementation on Amendment 2, no legislation has been introduced at this time. Committees start to meet Monday, January 11th, and the new legislative session opens in March.

That is all the information I can get from the legislators. More information will become available as committees start to meet and we will keep all our members informed.”

Robin Miller, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber president and CEO, noted, “The only plans that I have been in discussion with (mainly in hospitality sector) is that they are devastated and now have to plan to CUT STAFF and figure a new way to operate with less staff, more automation and higher costs.

“Some have even said they have to revisit their reinvestment plans (remodeling, etc.) because this added cost year over year is a major blow to their business models.”

Amanda Payne, AMPLIFY Clearwater president & CEO, told Paradise News, “Our board took a position against Amendment 2. While our board supports paying employees a good living wage, we felt strongly that the Florida constitution should not be the vehicle used to accomplish what should be done by legislative action.

“We are deeply concerned about our small businesses that are struggling to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. This could be the final hurdle that will cause many to close their doors.

We are also concerned that this will make Florida an outlier to economic investment in the southeast region. I have learned a great deal over the last several months. One being, we have a strong and resilient community. We are here to support our businesses, in any manner we can, as we all continue the path to recovery.”

‘Fight For $15’ Background When news broke that Florida voters had approved a ballot measure raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, Terrence Wise celebrated from a thousand miles away. “If we can get it in the Deep South, you know, down there in Florida, it’s bringing

Eight years after fast-food workers walked off the job in New York City and began calling for a $15 minimum wage, the passage of the Florida ballot initiative came as a big victory.

Florida is the first state in the South and the eighth state overall to adopt such a measure.

More than two dozen states and nearly 50 localities have a wage floor that is higher than the federal minimum wage, which has been stagnant at $7.25 since 2009. The East and West Coasts have the highest minimum wages, whereas the lowest are found throughout the South.

Florida will bear some of the fiscal impact as it will need to raise wages for state employees. The Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research (FOEDR) analyzed the impact a minimum wage boost would have on government budgets.

It estimates that annual wage costs will increase by $18 million in 2022, and up to $540 million by 2027. With the amendment’s passage, the drastic jump in costs would come from state employers needing to increase the minimum wage more than 75% from today’s $8.56 to $15 by 2026.

In comparison, states like California and New York experienced fewer costs instituting a $15 an hour minimum wage for government workers since they were already paying higher wages to their employees. California and New York both cemented the minimum wage increase in 2016. New York has largely implemented the new wage, with a few counties remaining to adopt it in 2021. California is gradually increasing their minimum wage, with $15 going into effect Jan. 1, 2023.

In The New York Times Sunday, Nov. 29, lead editorial entitled “Let’s Talk About Higher Wages,” a key quote noted: “Preaching the value of higher wages is a necessary first step toward changes in public policy that can begin to shift economic power. It can help to build support for increasing the federal minimum wage – a policy that has already proved popular at the state level, including conservative states like Arkansas, Florida and Missouri where voters in recent years have approved higher minimum wages in referendums.”

There is an epidemic of chronic pain in this country. Over 126 million people suffered from some sort of pain in the last three months: 40 million of those have pain everyday and 20 million have pain severe enough to limit their activities and/or ability to work.

Until recently, standard treatments for musculoskeletal injuries to joints, tendons, ligaments, muscle, bone, and spine have been focused on opioid narcotics, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), cortisone injections, ablation (burning) of nerves, and over-used surgeries.

Regrettably, these mainstay strategies are fraught with potentially serious adverse effects, generally have mediocre results, and in many cases, can even worsen the problem.

For example: • Narcotics are addictive and drug overdose deaths have been increasing at an alarming rate • Both cortisone and NSAIDS can accelerate cartilage loss in a joint • NSAIDS also increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke • Cortisone elevates sugar levels, increases risk of infection, and is quite potent at further degenerating already weakened tissue • Common surgeries for knee meniscus tears increase degeneration and the likelihood of a joint replacement in the future • Surgeries to repair torn knee ACLs can result in more severe arthritis in the future • Joint replacements carry serious risks such as heart attack, stroke, clotting, and infection • Lumbar fusions for low back pain are often ineffective according to the most recent research and create new problems above and below the fused segments 28

Anani Bistro!

Even in a pandemic life goes on, so recently I dared to go out with someone I met online.

He seemed fairly harmless and he must have thought I seemed fairly harmless, so we agreed to meet in a pandemic-appropriate way. But where?

“How about we check out that new coffee shop in Gulfport?” I suggested.

Anani looked a bit daunting from the street: the entrance was up a staircase, which to us – persons of a certain age – could be challenging. (We later found out there’s a lift out back.) But once inside we were charmed by the ambiance: clean, simple and bright,

well-spaced tables and chairs, a big, white counter with a few cheerful young baristas behind it.

The menu was vast and healthy: salads, wraps, juices and smoothies, and the ubiquitous avocado toast. But we stuck to caffeine and ordered cortados.

On our way in we had noticed a street-side veranda, so we carried our beverages to its long wooden counter and seated ourselves 6 feet apart on metal stools. There we enjoyed our bold drinks and chatted amiably, watching the world stroll by.

Alas, the relationship didn’t go much further than Facebook friendliness, but that’s OK.

Who wants to take a chance on a romance that could turn out to be infectious, in a bad way?

Anani’s veranda, however, has become my go-to hangout. Just today my laptop and I spent a few hours up there, doing more people watching than writing. It feels safe hovering above street level, where you can see and be seen without having to ask anyone to back off.

Is it time for Thai or Sushi?

By Peter Roos Where I was raised, if we went out to eat or got takeout, we often opted for oriental cuisine. The food was always fresh and reasonably priced, with plenty of vegetables and delicious sauces. Won ton soup and egg rolls with duck sauce were a bonus. When we moved to Florida over 50 years ago we discovered it was more difficult to find a Chinese restaurant worth going to. Once we moved to the beach, we made a discovery that changed our lives.

Just a few blocks from home, however, we found a Thai restaurant, which offered some dishes that closely resembled what we were used to, and a whole lot more.

Nori Thai at 7612 Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach quickly became more than just a favorite dining spot. It became a second office and meeting place where we would invite folks to meet us for lunch during the week or dinner anytime. Eventually, eight years ago, the Thai owner Suwanna, retired and sold the restaurant to her most loyal waitress, Joy.

Joy redecorated and over the next 5 years built up business at Nori Thai to the point that she looked around for another Thai restaurant to expand into. Three years ago she took over at St. Pete Beach’s other Thai restaurant, Basil Leaf Thai Sushi and Noodles at 6395 Gulf Blvd., across from the Post Card Inn. Located across from the hotels on Gulf Boulevard, Basil Leaf keeps different hours, opening for lunch at noon seven days a week and staying open all afternoon until about 10pm, while Nori Thai serves lunch only on weekdays and closes from 2:30-4:30pm. Both restaurants offer an amazing variety of Thai and Japanese cuisine and the menus have something for everyone.

While many recipes and Thai dishes are the same at the two restaurants, Basil Leaf offers a number of sushi specialties that are not on the Nori Thai menu. Both restaurants offer roughly the same list of 12 soups, 10 salads, 16 starters, five popular curries (Panang is my favorite), 10 traditional Thai dishes that

are offered in lunch or dinner portions, and at least six types of fried rice. Basil Leaf also offers seven choices of keto-friendly, low-carb, rice-less sushi rolls wrapped in thin sliced cucumber and three rice paper wraps, two of which are vegetarian, all served with delicious peanut sauce. Both restaurants ask if you like it spicy. You can say no thanks, or request mild, medium, hot or Thai hot.

Since restaurants reopened after the pandemic closure, both places have been doing great business in takeout and delivery. For takeout, call Basil Leaf at 727-360-4000. Stop by either restaurant and grab a to-go menu. For delivery, Joy recommends Uber Eats. If you order, please tell them you read about them in Paradise NEWS. Also, the couple has recently taken over the Super 7 convenience store just north of Nori Thai, across Blind Pass Road from Mastry’s Brewery. It is now friendlier and cleaner than ever.

Eat Breakfast Like A King Breakfast has always been the most important meal of the day. Chances are you have not been out for a “real breakfast” for a while. What is your idea of a perfect breakfast? Odds are it will be on the menu at the Sunset Bistro, any day of the week. It is a great location for Paradise NEWS readers, on the beach at the Thunderbird Resort, 10700 Gulf Blvd., in the heart of Treasure Island, where St. Petersburg’s Central Avenue meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Outdoor seating is an option with a view toward the beach and the pool, with comfortably spaced tables that made us feel like guests at a posh resort, without leaving our home town. There is plentiful FREE parking while you eat, with breakfast served from 8am-noon every day of the week, and an amazing, all-you-can-eat brunch offer ($15) added on the weekends. There is also a full liquor bar, so you can even have your favorite beverage served with your brunch. Mimosas are available too, including bottomless ones for a reasonable add-on.

With a party of five we were able to try just a few items on the expansive menu, but everyone in the group was thoroughly pleased. Chef Thomas Mandzik has something to please everyone. I am generally surprised how affordable a meal is there compared to prices I have seen almost anywhere else. Omelets for example, are $8-$9.50. pancakes or French toast for only $7.

can also be had Florentine style.

The corned beef hash is made in-house and reminds me of the meat in a sandwich from the Carnegie Deli. I thought about trying a Meat Lover’s, or a Greek omelet, but decided on the Steak and Eggs prepared the way I like it. There’s also a Veggie and a Spinach & Mozzerella omelet option, if meat is not your thing. I opted for some terrific crispy home fries, seasoned to perfection, and asked for an amazing side of fruit, which I ended up taking home and snacking on while writing this. One of our group opted for the Bananas Foster French toast, which she said was “to die for.”

Charles, our 19 year-old chemistry student waiter attends USFSP. We never saw him without a mask so I cannot say if he was handsome, but I can tell you he was impressive, self-confident and attentive. One of us tried a Belgian waffle ($5) with fresh cut fruit for $1 more.

Perfection. You can also just have oatmeal or grits, ($5) and with the options offered, you could have it served a different way, every day of the week.

The memoir, Little Satchmo: Living in the Shadow of My Father, Louis Daniel Armstrong, dispels the myth that Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong died childless and details Armstrong’s previously unknown side as a family man and devoted father. Little Satchmo makes its screen debut in 2021, with Preston-Folta, who lives in Sarasota and hosts TownTalk TampaBay on WSLR 96.5 FM, providing narration and interviews. Creative Pinellas Professional Artist grant award winner Lea Umberger is producing the film.

Seminole-based storyteller and illustrator Vincent Castro recently published Shoes, All Walks of Life, with the aspiration of turning it into an animation for audiences worldwide. The book contains motivational elements to inspire people of all ages to become more confident. It satisfies a yearning for educational and moral values, with added nuggets of wisdom for all ages.

Complete with 11 vibrant illustrations, the book takes readers into the life of Mikey, a middle-schooler at Cobbler Middle School Academy, and follows his day-to-day adventures with challenges like bullying, social cliques, and a romantic interest.

Throughout the story, readers gain wisdom and motivation by seeing how Mikey reinvents himself and attracts positive things into his life and uses a new philosophy of

Unidentified artist, Navajo, Transitional blanket, 1890-1910, Handspun wool, aniline dyes, Collection of Carol Ann Mackay (detail on the right) COLOR RIOT! at the Museum of Fine Arts This exhibition celebrates the individualism and flair for experimentation in Navajo textiles from the last quarter of the 19th century. Featuring over 80 dazzling works, these textiles reflect ideas and events the Navajo people experienced between 1863 and 1868, the hard years of their imprisonment in the Bosque Redondo, and their subsequent return to a reservation.

During this time, weavers absorbed stylistic features of Hispanic textiles and began to work with new materials such as aniline dyes and mass-produced Germantown yarns. Commercial products at trading posts sparked additional design ideas for weavers.

This touched off their experiments with color and design. No longer weaving for their traditional trade partners, and working at a time when outside market influences were at a low point, the Navajo were free to experiment with form and color. On display now through March 14.

ART NEWS Sensory Saturdays at the MFA The MFA welcomes families with children with sensory sensitivities to explore the galleries with us every second Saturday of the month, from 10am to 2pm. Meanwhile across the bridge The USF Institute for Research in Art in the College of The Arts will launch a new exhibition titled Still Here: The Griffith J. Davis Photographs and Archives in Context, on Friday, Jan. 22, with a virtual Zoombased reception at 6pm. Griffith J. Davis (1923-1993) was internationally acclaimed for “painting” memorable masterpieces with the camera, pen and typewriter rather than paintbrush and canvas. A pioneer international photographer, journalist, U.S. Senior Foreign Service Officer, and photo-documentarian, Davis’s artistic and iconic photographs capture historical moments and figures, lifestyles, personalities and people across a spectrum of political, socioeconomic and artistic sectors at the vortex of the Civil Rights Movement and the Independence Movement of Africa.

The Tampa Museum of Art (TMA) received a $255,158 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to support expanded and enhanced museum programming over two years. The influx of funds will allow TMA to extend its existing art therapy-informed interventions online and expand virtual engagement opportunities to families participating in the Museums for All program. Music lovers rejoice The Florida Orchestra announced its slate of concerts in January as it continues to roll out its reimagined 2021 season.

And you thought Gulfport was wacky The Peninsularium is coming to Ybor Heights. It’s touted by the Crab Devil artist collective as an immersive arts attraction imagined as a family-friendly cabinet of curiosities ripe with kitsch, bizarre history, and fantastical lore showcasing Florida at its most weird and wild, presented through the guise of a typical roadside establishment, the Crab Devil Bait Shop. As customers enter the functioning bait shop, they are encouraged to explore the attached museum, where they are transported into an otherworldly series of unique, immersive spaces showcasing the eccentric culture and curious existence of the nation’s most infamous peninsula. Drawing on Tampa’s history as a port city and center of maritime commerce, The Peninsularium will be constructed from an assemblage of repurposed shipping containers harkening back to the traveling circuses of the early 1900s. Housed alongside one of Tampa’s premier contemporary art galleries, Tempus Projects, as well as the boundary-defying

All January concerts will be conducted by Michael Francis, TFO music director, at the Mahaffey Theater. TFO will be following strict CDC guidelines for health and safety.

In addition to in-person concerts, TFO will continue to offer live-stream and on-demand video for free so everyone has access to the music during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series and Masterworks: Soundwaves programs will take place on the same weekends. Why offer five concerts in one weekend? It’s the result of Francis splitting the orchestra into two smaller ensembles of 20-40 players for greater spacing onstage.

ART NEWS Arts Business Academy for Creative Artists St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is presenting the annual Arts Business Academy for emerging creative businesses. artists, musicians and writers.

This certificate course will provide artists, musicians, writers, graphic designers with the skillsets and confidence to launch an arts business career. Local arts professionals and business leaders will provide the training on topics, including defining your goal as an artist, pricing, marketing, media and banking.

The Arts Alliance is again collaborating with St. Petersburg College’s Work Force Institute. In addition to the sessions, participants will have access to SPC’s supplemental non-credit workforce training courses. These non-credit courses will help participants develop their professional skill sets, including effective communication, writing skills, and essentials of marketing.

Spencer and Alice, his wife of almost 50 years, eloped while Alice was still in her teens. They had three children, to whom they have been totally devoted. Laura and Samuel live close by. Laura worked with them in the scrapbooking store. Son John is a naval commander and lives with his family in Virginia, currently working at the Pentagon.

Between them, they’ve given Alice and Spencer seven grandchildren who were all their grand-dads’ favorites, according to Alice.

John Spencer Lucas lll was born on November 19, 1950, in St. Petersburg, and passed away on December 14, 2020.

Spencer Lucas, who served as president of the Friends of the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum for the past several years, had deep local ties. His great-grandfather Warren Webster, after whom the St. Pete Beach Community Center in Pass-a-Grille is named, was a New Jersey industrialist who moved to Pass-a-Grille in 1913. “I grew up in PAG, left in 1971 and returned in 2000,” Spencer said. “There was so much going on in the area while I was growing up: The Hurricane Classic boat races, the Sunshine School Fish Fries, the PAG Yacht Club 4th of July Regatta, the Christmas Caroler Barge, the Beach Hotel fire in the 60’s where Paradise Grille now stands, the Little Dutch Bakery, the Beach Theater and Lamb’s Drug store, going down to 8th Ave to Hubbard’s / Merry Pier and seeing the boats come in with their catches, the daily 12 o’clock siren test for the volunteer fire department, and enjoying the wonderful precious beach, a history of 44

Between 1971 and 2000, Spencer spent a career as a fireman, and retired early as captain of the Charlotte, NC Fire Department to be near his father, who had contracted Parkinson’s. Returning to his Pass-a-Grille roots, Spencer studied with local photographer Peppy Emmons and started a photography service called Yacht Shots and More, which morphed into Portraits in Paradise and with his long-time wife Alice started Scrapbooking in Paradise, first on the corner of Blind Pass Road and Corey Avenue, where his dad’s real estate office used to be. They moved their respective businesses to South Pasadena Shopping Center when they sold the property.

Local realtor Joan Walker, one of Spencer’s closest friends, said “Spencer was a natural comedian, was always a gentleman, and

is remembered by everyone as one of the friendliest, funniest and most generous men they had ever known. Alice, who was trained as a nurse, has been Spencer’s angel and caregiver for years.” One of Peppy’s daughter’s, Michele Gardner, said “I have known “Spennie” since Sunshine School.

My dad was his mentor in the photo business, so they spent many long days together, and he was very close to our family. I can hardly believe he has left us.”

“I now appreciate history more than ever” Spencer was quoted as saying in a 2013 article about the historical museum in Paradise NEWS. “It is always interesting, intriguing, and full of surprises. It is a privilege to serve as president for the Friends and volunteer my time to help preserve the past. It is gratifying work because we are all part of history. The dedication of all our volunteers and the generosity of financial support from individuals, to neighborhood associations, the city of SPB, and the county, keep us operating. The museum is a continuous work in progress and is a priceless asset of our little islands.”

Spencer’s famous last words on that occasion were, “Come visit, enjoy and get involved with your museum.” In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are encouraged to make a donation in Spencer’s name to the Parkinson’s Foundation and/or the Friends of the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum.

Cold Symptoms in Dogs Just like when you have a cold, dogs experience sneezing, coughing and nasal congestion, watery eyes, runny nose, sore throat, and body aches. Your pet might not be as energetic as usual, which is a good thing. Rest is especially important as your dog recovers from the viral infection. Several different types of viruses can cause cold symptoms in dogs.

Cold-like symptoms can occur from canine flu or kennel cough. If your coughing dog sounds like a honking goose, kennel cough may be the cause. It spreads quickly through animal shelters, doggy daycares, and anywhere else dogs are in close contact

The Bordetella vaccine reduces your pet’s risk of developing kennel cough. Canine influenza may also cause many of the same symptoms. This illness is very contagious.

Nearly all dogs exposed to it become infected with 80 percent showing symptoms according to AVMA. Symptoms of canine flu may include sneezing, runny nose, fever, and a dry or wet cough. Dogs may also develop pneumonia or a secondary bacterial infection. The canine influenza vaccine can decrease your pet’s risk of getting the flu.

Although some dogs have tested positive to the coronavirus, the numbers are fairly low.

Most infected dogs had mild symptoms and none were fatal according to the CDC. Other illnesses that can cause upper respiratory symptoms include fungal or bacterial infections, allergies, worms, and heart disease.

What Should I Do If My Dog Has a Cold?

It’s a good idea to visit your veterinarian who can provide a diagnosis and treatment

options no matter what the cause of the symptoms. If your dog has a cold, a cool-mist humidifier will ease nasal congestion and soothe your pet’s sore throat. Be sure to provide plenty of water so your pet stays hydrated. Use a soft, moist washcloth to remove mucus from their nose.

If your pet accompanies you on your daily run or walk, leave them home.

Overexertion will make them feel worse and make it difficult for them to keep up with you.

Call your vet if your pet’s symptoms worsen or don’t improve after a week, or your dog isn’t interested in eating or drinking.

Don’t wait a week to call if your pet has a chronic condition or is a senior dog or puppy. Call your veterinarian immediately if your pet has difficulty breathing, walking, or standing. One of the great pleasures of living near the beach is the opportunity to see so many native species in their natural environments. We love to watch the herons, egrets, skimmers and pelicans hunt for fish.

We take many of the beach birds for granted – the gulls, sandpipers and of course the tiny Snowy Plovers.

The Snowy Plover is Tampa Baywatch’s bird of the month.

They are vulnerable to disturbance by people since it only nests on white sandy barrier beaches, near passes and intertidal sand flats.

They are members of the small shorebird family known as “peeps.”

They can be found along Florida’s coastlines year-round, nesting in dune ecosystems that regularly face development pressure, disturbance, and predation from February through August. These tiny birds can live to be 15 years old! There are approximately 200 breeding pairs of Snowy Plovers in the state of Florida, all of which are located on the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. The breeding season runs from March through mid-summer and nests are located on the open beach, somewhat back from the waterline. While the state of Florida considers the Snowy Plover to be endangered; the federal government does not.

During the courtship ritual, the male and female will make a “scrape” in the sand and then line it with broken pieces of shells. This forms the nest site. Over a 5 to 10-day period, the female will lay three eggs, which is considered to be a full clutch. The male and female then take turns incubating the eggs, which takes 28 days. As soon as an egg hatches, the adults take the empty shell far away from the nest site as it will attract fire ants that could attack the chicks.

Normally, all three eggs hatch the same day. The adults also must “brood” the chicks. Brooding is where the adult provides body heat or shade as the chicks are unable to regulate their own body temperature. The chicks periodically must seek refuge under the adult.

The adults remain with the chicks for 30-45 days, or until the chicks have fledged. At times, shortly after the chicks have hatched, the male takes over protection and brooding duties and the female starts another nest with a new mate. The chicks spend all day foraging and grow quite quickly. Snowy Plover chicks become sexually mature during their first year and can find a mate and start a family the next season. The snowy plover is protected by the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act and as a state-designated Threatened Species by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule.

RESERVATIONS: INSHORE- Sheepshead are starting to get more aggressive and prolific around the local structures. Small pieces of fresh shrimp, cut clams or oysters, and especially the smaller crabs like fiddlers, mud or mangrove crabs are all great options for sheepshead bait. You want to use either a very light knocker rig or a free line set up with some small split shots. Minimal weight is key on lighter tackle with around 15-20lb fluorocarbon. Smaller strong hook around 1ot or perhaps even smaller. These fish will bite right on or adjacent to big structures like docks, bridges, piers, jetties, seawalls, rock piles, and also around oyster bars. These guys are tons of fun to catch and fight hard on lighter tackle around the structures. They can be difficult to fillet but are great eating fish.

Trout action is picking up and we’re seeing larger average sizes on the trout too! These guys love those ambush points around the edges and potholes of local grass flats. However, we are seeing them around the bridge lights and dock lights at night too. Redfish action continues to be impressive too. Just keep in mind, trout, redfish and snook are all catch and release only for the greater Tampa Bay area until end of May. NEAR SHORE & OFFSHORE - Hogfish action is going extremely well right now in 30-70ft of water. Live shrimp or fresh dead shrimp and light tackle is best. Use 20-30lb fluorescent for the leader with 3-4ot hooks.

They love crustaceans so you can use fiddler crabs, rock shrimp, sand fleas, and even other small crabs to target them but the live shrimp or fresh dead shrimp is the most common choice when targeting hogfish.

Mangrove snapper fishing right now has been stellar offshore and pretty good near shore too. We start to see mangroves around 50-80ft but we are seeing some big girls beyond 100ft of water right now. This time of year we are seeing some large overall sized in our long range trips with some in the 7-10lb range. These smart fish are tons of fun to target on threadfin plugs with the double snell rig. However, near shore many prefer to target them on a knocker rig or jig head with live shrimp or greenbacks.

Yellow tail snapper are around right now too; we are seeing some of these fish mixed in with the mangrove snapper and some of them have been very large too. They will take a threadfin plug or live shrimp like the mangrove snapper, but we target them specifically with small strips of squid around a ½ inch thick and about 2 inches long.

Lane snapper are more and more prolific from around 60-110ft of water and we are seeing huge lane snapper right now too. They seem to only be getting larger and more prolific around these depths, biting just about any baits from threadfin chunks to squid, to octopus to live shrimp when targeting hogfish or mangrove snapper in the deeper near shore waters.

Blackfin tuna time is approaching out past 80-100ft, we see a big push of these fish in cooler months in our area and we are starting to see these guys coming up on the troll, flat lines and even knocker rigs. Wahoo are around right now too. These super-fast fish are fun to fight and will scream drag like no other fish.

2020 has been a real roller coaster of a ride for many of us.

How about you?

Speaking for myself, I could name a few experiences I do not wish to replicate in the new year ahead–especially a pandemic.

Understanding the role my consciousness (or belief system) plays in creating my future, I am taking an intentional time-out this week to gain some clarity around this point; what part of the energetic imprint (memories attached to specific experiences) of 2020 will I choose to leave behind and what part will I bring with me? Just being aware that we all have the power to do so metaphorically puts us in the drivers seat as we cruise down the highway, crossing the borderline of a new “state” of consciousness in a new year.

We hold the power to create a new experience in life by first understanding that while we can’t change the past, we can choose not to recreate it by dragging it into the future. You have to be willing to identify and remove old beliefs that too often subtly undermine your success and replace them with new beliefs that support your vision of

A NEW YEAR’S CALL TO ACTION: When an old behavior pops up, stop what you are doing and challenge it. Call it out and expose it to the light of the new you... and then make another choice that honors your highest intention for 2021. If need be, enlist the support of a mentor, counselor or trusted friend to be your cheerleader—to help you stay on point. Don’t concern yourself with how this will happen; once you are clear on the what, the universe has a way of guiding you in taking the appropriate actions required to manifest the how.

Realize that in this process you have just taken hold of the chalk and the eraser.
