From the Board A Message from Friends’ President

Greetings. It is hard to believe that my year of service as the President of the Friends of the Library Board is almost over. It has been a good year of learning more about our library and all it offers our community and opportunities to meet Friends members and volunteers. I want to thank all who help make the Friends a success. I want to thank the Executive Board members who are completing their terms of office, Denny Shea, Sandie Robbers, Barb Tumm, and Margot Bouchard. I am grateful for their dedication to the Friends. I am looking forward to serving with the newly elected board members who will join us in July. Please take special note of the article detailing the Friends special support for library programming. Each year the library staff and the Library Board of Trustees send forward a request for special funding. This year the Friends provided over $18,000 in support of the library’s programs. The executive board noted that many of the requests were for equipment or assistance for programs that support the library’s strategic plans,

Welcome, Angie!

Friends’ New Administrative Coordinator Hello, my name is Angie Sommers, and I am the new Administrative Coordinator for the Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. I grew up in central Wisconsin but moved to Eau Claire several years ago to attend college and found that I loved the area. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication with an emphasis on Public Relations from UW-Eau Claire. Upon finishing school, I started as the Volunteer Coordinator and Office Manager at Beaver Creek Reserve, a nature reserve located outside of Fall Creek. I loved working with the volunteers at the many various special events that Beaver Creek has to offer. I

am hanging up my hat as the Volunteer Coordinator, but will continue my role at the reserve as the Office Manager. I am very excited about my new position with the Friends of L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. I love my backgrounds in both office management and volunteerism, and I believe this job will be a wonderful melding of the two. I have appreciated the warm welcome to the library. Please feel free to stop and introduce yourself the next time you are at the library.

Committee News Book Sale

By Cleo Powers, Chair As I prepare this entry for the Friends newsletter, I keep glancing outside and once again am full of despair that spring/summer may never arrive and stay for more than a couple of hours. At least there is good news to report from the April sale. We took in $4860, and by mid-Saturday afternoon, we had little stock left on the tables to sell. Clean up was a breeze! That’s the way we would like to end all sales. As you begin your spring/summer housecleaning and discover books, videotapes, CDs, record albums, etc. that you no longer need, please consider donating them to the Friends’ book sales. Please, just be sure the items you wish to donate are clean and free of any strange odors. We cannot sell dirty, damaged, smelly items.

A special “thank you” to Jonah and Jess Goss who will be graduating from high school this May. The twins began their volunteer work at book sales in April, 2005 when they were 6th graders and have been regular volunteers ever since. They have lifted many boxes, pushed uncountable numbers of carts of books, and have just been outstanding and very personable, generous volunteers. We offer them our congratulations and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.

not renewed, please do so. A second renewal mailing went out in early May. It appears that members are renewing at the same level of support. Remember, each member of Friends contributes to the overall success of the library by providing funds for various library projects. Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to become a member of Friends and join in the various volunteer opportunities. The Committee will conclude the spring membership drive in early June.

To our many Friends donors, we look forward to your continued generosity and support. Thank you. If you would like to volunteer to work at book sales, please contact Angie Sommers at angies@eauclaire.lib.wi.us or 715-8315301. See you all at the June 17-18 sale. The Library and the Eau Claire Downtown Redesign: Get Excited; Be Heard! Public information meetings for the Eau Claire Downtown Riverfront District project began in December 2010 and since the library figures prominently in parts of the plans, the library staff and Board have been involved and giving feedback to both the City and the architects. From the Ayres Associates’ Eau Claire Downtown Riverfront District website: Eau Claire Street: http://www.ayresassociates.com/ECDowntown/eauclaire. html “The City of Eau Claire aspires to create a strong visual and circulatory link between the library-City Hall area and the downtown riverfront. Eau Claire Street lends itself perfectly to accomplishing this goal. A well balanced organization of programming and design will establish Eau Claire Street as a major draw for the downtown. Eau Claire Street could evolve into a hub of activity that attracts patrons to downtown for civic events, festivals and downtown specific programming. The 2001 Downtown Action Agenda called for the creation of a Town Square next to City Hall along Eau Claire Street. It also recommended developing an Eau Claire Street Promenade, a waterfront plaza connected to the Town Square and the waterfront through landscaping. It will link the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library/City Hall campus and the Haymarket parking lot at the confluence of the Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers. As with South Barstow Street, this design will use the principles and theories of “placemaking”–to develop this area so that it offers multiple activities to create a lively and interesting environment that will bring people downtown.” The third public information meeting was held on April 7 and included were the presentation of four city hall/library campus concepts and various Eau Claire Street design and elevation layouts. As Volume One wrote about the four concepts on April 28: “The first (and, again, the most conservative) merely adds a duck-in for dropping people off or picking them up (also for book drops) with a sculpture in a median. The second would make Eau Claire Street one way for this block, has more aggressive paving work, also has a duck-in and adds more parking. The third gets more exciting still, by eliminating the street on this block entirely and creating a centralized plaza with a water feature, plantings and pedestrian elements. “This is an area meant to draw the public,” [architect Garrett] Perry said, pushing forward to the most aggressive scheme yet, one in which they removed the U.S. Bank between the library and city hall to create a massive campus with all the elements presented in the third, plus more. It will no doubt be a while until we see the whole design approach, but there’s reason to get excited. And still an opportunity to make yourself heard.”

The Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library have been designated as a GoodSearch.com recipient. If you are unfamiliar with using GoodSearch, here is how to get started raising money online for the Friends. Instead of using your normal Internet search engine, log on to www.goodsearch.com. Below the search engine bar you’ll see a space where you can designate your donation; be sure to type “Friends of the LE Phillips Memorial Public Library” in that place. Once you’ve added the Friends as your preferred charity, just use the search engine above like any other. The average donation is around once cent per search query. The results are powered

by Yahoo! which is considered by many to be one of the world’s top search engines. The website also includes GoodShop.com, which provides an online shopping mall featuring more than 2,000 online stores. Each purchase made via GoodShop results in a donation to the user’s preferred charity averaging approximately 3% of the sale, and the experience of shopping through GoodShop is exactly the same as going to the retailer’s websites directly. So please help spread the word and consider using www.goodsearch.com for all your Internet searching or online shopping needs and help raise funds for the Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library.

Thank You! By Bess Arneson PR and Programming Services Librarian Funds for activities and materials at the library recently got a big boost from a generous donation given by the Friends. At their March meeting, the Friends’ Board of Directors approved a motion to contribute $18,500 to the library for special projects identified by library staff. Services for children and teens are one area that will benefit from the Friends’ gift. Among the projects to be funded are prizes and incentives for children’s and teens’ reading programs, dies of varying sizes and shapes to continue development of the Ellison Die-cut Collection, new materials for the kits the library uses in its visits with area daycare facilities, and replacement items for the educational toy collection used by infants in the playtime portion of the library’s lapsit storytime. In addition, the Friends will be helping to support a major goal of the library’s new strategic plan by funding the creation of

“early literacy spots” in various places throughout Youth Services. The idea is to create activity spots that will enhance the six early literacy skills with activities that feel like play to the children and convey to parents how fun and easy it is to teach these skills. The Friends’ gift also supports a number of services and activities for adults. Included in the donation are funds for the Chippewa Valley Book Festival, Club Read, ArtsWest prizes and refreshments, and promotional materials for this year’s summer art exhibit. The funds will also be used to purchase additional audiobooks on CD, promotional give-away items, and a table-top lectern for use in the library meeting rooms.

Thank You, Elaine! By Margot Bouchard, Past President I would like to extend our thanks to Elaine Wendt for her leadership this past year. Elaine became President in July of 2010. At that time, the library remodeling was complete and Friends many programs proceeded without a hitch. Our Give-A-Kid-A Book project during the holidays brought in over $2,900 from the community and over 2,200 books. This past year Friends donated over $50,000 to the library through memberships, book sales and other donations; and we also continued to support the Chippewa Valley Book Festival.

Elaine brought a few unique initiatives to Friends during her tenure. With her guidance, we were part of the strategic planning for the library and she worked closely with Jen Janiak (current vice president) on a member survey that provided us with excellent information. Our annual meeting speaker, Dr. Robert Smiley, was secured by Elaine and she took the lead in the hiring of our new cocoordinator Angie Sommers. Happily, Elaine will continue on Friends board this coming year in her role as past president. We wish her continued success!

The Friends Executive Board meets the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Board Room at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. Friends are welcome.

Summer 2011

By Elaine Wendt The Friends of the L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library held their annual meeting on April 18, 2011. The Friends recognized Dr. Katherine Schneider for being named Wisconsin Library Trustee of the Year. Dr. Schneider was recognized for the many contributions she has made to the L.E. Phillips Public Library, the Friends Board and the Library Board. John Stoneberg, Library Director, presented his library update. The Library Board finalized a Five Year Strategic Plan and the library staff is in the process of implementing various aspects of the plan. Library statistics show that usage continues at a very high level. Copies of the History of the Public Library were made available to attendees.

The Nominating Committee presented the slate of candidates for office. Mark Olsen was elected Member-at-Large, Jill Markgraf was elected to serve as Vice President, Donna Weidman will serve as Treasurer and Brenda Brant will serve as Secretary. Following adjournment of the meeting Dr. Robert W. Smiley, guest speaker, presented “Intellectual and Academic Freedom: The Importance of Your Voice”. Dr. Smiley has been recognized for his advocacy for intellectual freedom in libraries throughout Wisconsin. He discussed his experience in implementation of computer filter policies in public schools. He also urged us to be earnest advocates for libraries as they are a major source of support for exercising intellectual freedom. Dr. Smiley’s presentation was followed by social time and a lively discussion.

Banned Books Week:

Celebrating the Freedom to Read September 24−October 1, 2011 Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States. The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of

the community to retain the books in the library collections and teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society. Friends Annual Meeting

on September 11th

Libraries Remember 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon as well as the downing of a passenger jet over rural Pennsylvania. Libraries represent freedom of expression, celebration of diversity, a playing field that is level, preservation of heritage, and commitment to the future. There may be nothing more antithetical to terrorism, hatred, bigotry, and fanaticism than the American Public Library. We believe there can be no more fitting tribute, no more appropriate commemoration of September 11, 2011, than for the library to simply be there. The library will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011, conducting business as usual: facilitating communication, fostering citizenship, promoting understanding, guaranteeing freedom of access to information, and above all, on that particular day, standing with doors open as a remarkable symbol of our freedom. Special activities under consideration include opening and closing ceremonies, guest speakers, documentary films and dedicated areas for exploring information and media related to September 11.
