infocusinfocusinfocusinfocusinfocusinfocusinfocus Dubbo Bobbin Lacemakers group turns 1 Contributed by ELSIE HOWE DUBBO Bobbin Lacemakers marked the first anniversary of their group at their meeting yesterday (Wednesday, June 17). The group, which now numbers around a dozen, began lacemaking together in June last year. It attracted a wide range of abilities, from the very skilled to those some years out of practise. Absolute beginners have also been catered for with ‘starter kits’ put together by Shirley Keath, one of the founding members, following requests from other craftspeople wanting to try out the centuries-old technique. Several beginners are now making good progress. Group coordinator, Elsie Howe, said that one of the pleasures of getting together to practise this more unusual craft was for members to see the variety of ‘pillows’ on which the lace is worked, and the range of attractive bobbins on which the thread is wound. At their May meeting, the Lacemakers were delighted to be shown some Maltese lace, and the bobbins and pillow used

Decades-old Maltese lace worked on Gozo, with distinctive ‘wheat-ear’ and Maltese Cross pattern.
The group would welcome them to come along with whatever equipment they have, to share their memories with the group. Dubbo Lacemakers meet from 10am-4pm on the third Wednesday each month at the
