at Panhandle Plains Historical Musuem During the Holidays

As the seasons begin to change, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) prepares to celebrate another holiday season and welcome between 7,000 to 8,000 visitors during the month of December. Since the 1970s, the staff and volunteers have decorated each of the three floors of the museum with trees and holiday backdrops in anticipation of hosting the PPHM Christmas Open House. This event is followed by families and tourists who make PPHM a destination during their vacation or staycation during the holiday breaks.

The museum started long before the 1970s.

In April of 1933, PPHM opened to its first visitors. The museum was the vision of Hattie Anderson, a professor at West Texas State Normal College (now WTAMU).

What is planned for 2020?

We have begun to develop a reinvestment zone for Main Street and are planning for revitalization of our downtown area. The TIRZ will give incentives to rehabilitate the downtown area. The development of new homes is being talked about, and there is interest from several contractors to build approximately 30 new homes. Both projects will be ongoing and other projects to enhance and attract people to our community. For a city our size, we have a lot to offer. We have a great school system, a beautiful retirement complex with sixty-one units and excellent health services with our clinic and 24-hour EM service.

What are your personal goals or resolutions for 2020?

Personally, I want our city to be the best community in the Panhandle. I’d like to attract more people to come here and create development. We are looking to bring in some restaurants or stores along Highway 60. The sky is the limit.

Friona, TX Population: 4,000

What is planned for 2020?

Friona is strategically located between several major industries as well as a highway that connects traffic from Texas to New Mexico. In the coming year, the City of Friona will focus on housing development options, promoting tourism and expanding our waste management program, Keep Friona Clean, to include recycling services. The City will also work with the Friona Economic Development Corporation to help local businesses with storefront improvements and establish an economic incentive program to attract commercial businesses. Our goal is to stimulate growth and show anyone living, visiting or passing through all that Friona has to offer.

What is your favorite town or personal holiday What are your personal goals or resolutions tradition or event? for 2020?

When I was younger, my favorite holiday tradition included driving through the Western Subdivision of Friona to observe the Christmas decorations and luminarias. The entire neighborhood sparkled with Christmas glee. Now, we have Christmas in the Park which gives everyone in town an opportunity to adopt a tree in our City Park and showcase their holiday spirit. Along with booths, baked goods, carriage rides, Christmas music and photographs with Santa, this year’s event promises to be our best one yet.

My personal goals for 2020 include spending more time with the family, finding a better balance between my work and personal life and slowing down to enjoy all the sights and sounds that Texas Panhandle communities have to offer.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

I grew up in Friona as a proud member of the Friona Chieftain Band, so instrumental music or concert music has always resonated with me. An instrumental version of “Sleigh Ride” is my all-time favorite Christmas song. It’s fun, up-beat and ends with an awesome trumpet solo imitating the sound of a horse whinnying.

What is planned for 2020?

Pampa’s City Hall has long needed new windows. The near 100-year-old windows are original to the building, and this year we have finally found money to replace them. Through the years the doors have been replaced and do not align with the original architecture of the building. We are looking forward to replacing those as well and getting the historical building back to its original beauty. We will be replacing one of our fire engines in 2020 to go along with the new ladder truck we purchased in 2017, and we will be doing over a million dollars in street improvements in 2020, including street rehab projects as well as a major seal coat project. We are also excited to be working on our second reinvestment zone in the City of Pampa to promote economic development.

What is your favorite town or personal holiday tradition?

What are your personal goals or resolutions for 2020?

My favorite holiday tradition is getting together with family, and when that happens in Pampa, we love to visit the City of Pampa’s Celebration of Lights, which is a drive-through light display at Recreation Park. We started that program back up a couple of years ago, and it has grown to quite an impressive Christmas light display. And very worth the price of admission – FREE!

My 2020 goals or resolutions are to be a better Christian in 2020 than I am in 2019 and always do what’s right for the betterment of our community.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

My favorite Christmas song is probably “Silver Bells.”

What is planned for 2020?

We’re hoping to attract a hotel and more restaurants; we’ve got a high volume of traffic thanks to two major highways intersecting in the middle of town. The city has received the first grant towards a swimming pool so that’s in the works. SCDC started our second round of Façade Grants to help businesses in the city limits renovate/remodel their properties; curb appeal is very important. Three businesses have opened on Main Street this year, and we’re getting a new newspaper, The Sherman County Gazette, so we’ve been busy.

Stratford ISD completed the renovation projects that were funded by voter support of the school bond, so students and teachers have new surroundings for learning. Here’s hoping 2020 is just as profitable!

What is your favorite town or personal holiday tradition or event?

Our local daycare Lollipop Junction has The Reindeer Dash which serves as a fundraiser. It includes a lighting contest, vendors and a fun run that winds through the neighborhoods which are lit up with Christmas decorations. After the activities, many residents drive through town enjoying the bright lights! Lots of fun that night!

What are your personal goals or resolutions for 2020?

My personal goals will be working towards making Stratford a destination, a place where people want to stop, shop, eat or visit; we have an awesome Main Street. We’re a great little town!!

What is your favorite Christmas song?

My favorite song is “When It’s Christmastime in Texas” by George Strait.

Since the organization was founded in 2016, they have distributed over 90,000 quality children’s books in an effort to equalize a gap in access to literacy at home for at-risk children.

Today, after all the research we’ve seen on the impact of books in the home at an early age, there is no doubt that every single book we can give to a child with limited resources makes a difference. Providing children’s books is a zero-risk investment in the future of our city.”

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, many people experience mood changes.

While the winter blues are fairly common, some experience an even more severe depression related to the temperature change called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. Dr. Amy Stark with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center explains, “It’s normal to get a bit down in the winter months, especially in the first few weeks following the time change. You might notice lower energy or feeling tired earlier at night.” However, the symptoms of SAD are more than feeling extra tired.

“In addition to poor mood and low energy, there are some other symptoms that are more specific and when paired with the seasonal worsening may give you a clue that this is SAD. Increased appetite and weight gain, with a specific craving for carbohydrates, is more commonly seen with SAD. There is also an increase in sleep, feeling more sensitive to rejection or insults from friends or loved ones, and feeling slowed down or heavy.”

Just asking your friend or family member what they may need can provide some help. “You can never go wrong asking ‘What can I do to be helpful?’ or ‘What do you need?’” suggests Dr. Stark. “Someone may benefit greatly from talking about their feelings with friends, whereas others may just want your company to go on a quiet walk.”

Certain types of therapy and antidepressant medications have proven to be effective in treating SAD; however, Dr. Stark says the gold treatment for those with winter SAD is light therapy.

“About half of the SAD population who use phototherapy are able to achieve remission. It’s not just any light, though. The light needs to be

a certain type. In order to get benefit you should be getting a light box that is at least 10,000 lux.”

For light therapy, Dr. Stark suggests that you use a light box daily in the mornings for 30 to 90 minutes. “I usually recommend to my patients that they set it up to the side while doing a morning task like eating breakfast, reading the news or checking emails,” said Dr. Stark.

Above all, if you, a friend or a family member are experiencing symptoms of SAD, Dr. Stark states that the most important thing you can do is encourage them to seek help and treatment from a healthcare professional. “Asking for help for SAD, depression, manic behavior or any mental illness, is a sign of strength, and encouraging those around you to take care of their mental and physical well-being will help to break down the stigma associated with mental illness,” said Dr. Stark.

Other calming or uplifting activities during mood changes include: Journaling: Take time to write down what you are feeling. Sometimes, visualizing your thoughts can help Breathing: Breathing techniques are capable of calming the mind when you are feeling overwhelmed. Focusing on breathing in and out slowly can help relax your body.

Meditation: There are many different styles of meditation, so find the best one that fits you. Taking time to pause and meditate can help bring your thoughts into perspective.

Socializing: Spending time with friends or family can help with the loneliness that you may feel during the colder winter months.

“When I was young, I went out to Los Angeles and played with some great bands and then went to Austin for a few years. A lot of it was timing. It was really the right place at the right time with Texas Country scene as it was starting to blow up in Austin and Lubbock, with Pat Green, and me, Cory Morrow, Roger Creager. I call it the ‘Class of 2000.’ This was in the time of the internet coming about, pre-social media, .com was just coming about, and it was an exciting time because you had a way to spread the word about your music. This was instead of relying on radio and a record deal only. The internet is a leveling field; if you have good music, you can find a fan base.”

What is happening now in your career?

“I just put out a new record Barstool Stories with the first release being ‘Better with Beer.’” Kevin then laughs again and talks about every album having a token song with the word beer in the title. “I have my new record out and new single, and then me and my buddy Roger Creager took 550 crazy, screaming Texas Country Music fans to Cabo San Lucas for our annual trip. We have been wanting to do a record together, but neither of us had ever done a duet record. So, we just put out a new record called Dos Borrachos which translates to (laughter) Two Drunks. We did the whole record in 30 days, wrote it, recorded, knocked it out, done. And I love the record. It was a different record, not like a personal record that all the stress is all on you. This was all for fun; maybe I just need to do more of that - making music with my drinking buddies.”

What are your favorite memories of Amarillo/the Panhandle?

“When I grew up there, we never locked our doors, until junior high. I never even had a key to my house until then. Growin’ up there our parents didn’t have to worry about us. As long as we were home by the time the streetlights came on, it was good. All summer long we would leave early in the day, and our parents had no idea where we were and what we were doing. We rode BMX bikes and just had a good time. I have 3 daughters now, and I wish they had that freedom. They miss out on getting to grow

What are your favorite holiday traditions?

“Miss the holidays a lot. Every year we do a big tour called ‘Deck the Dancehalls’ during the holidays. That’s a tough one these days. I love spending time with family, but that is hard in this business. We work when other people have time off. I’m slowing down some with my fiancée and kids to enjoy the holidays and look forward to the time we do get to be together. As a musician you are working while others are playing, but I can’t complain at all. This business has been good to me; it has been a heck of a ride. I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

It is not every day It is not every day that a book is written by two people living more than 5,000 miles apart, but in the modern era, anything is possible. Still, many people have asked how our book came about. The answer is pretty straightforward: It all started with a blind date in downtown Amarillo.

The rest was just a matter of time.

Like many connections made these days, ours was one by Facebook. The only caveat is that it wasn’t really a date in the romantic sense, and Ellen’s husband Udo was there as well. It makes for good joke material now, but in all seriousness, our social media-crafted meet-up was about a very serious proposal they had for me: Would you like to work on a Route 66 book?

It took all the restraint I could find to keep my ecstatic, “Yes!” from sounding like a kid who had just been asked if he wanted to go to Disney World.

Ellen and Udo Klinkel, who live in western Germany south of Bonn, had met me in a Route 66 group on Facebook and knew that I enjoyed writing as well as exploring the old road. The two of them are accomplished photographers and had fallen into Route 66 in 2013 while on a lengthy trip to the

U.S. Unfortunately, the government had shut down about the time they arrived, and our national parks—their intended destinations—had closed.

So they quickly assembled Plan B and commenced driving Route 66 from west to east to the midpoint, shooting thousands of photographs along the way. The couple, who had married in Bodie, California, fell in love with 66, and the rest is their history.

Udo had already published a book in Europe about motor car racing in Germany, and this was to be Ellen’s baby. She just needed someone to tell the story in greater detail.

That blind date, if you will, occurred in May 2015, and we quickly set to building the skeleton of the book and planning when we could all travel together. We considered it important that I be with Ellen for as much of the principal photography as possible, in order that I could see and experience the same thing Ellen was seeing. Writing the expanded narrations for 101 locations would be easier if I knew what she was seeing through her lens, as well as being in the precise same

moment.

We hit the road several times between

We hit the road several times 2015 and 2017, focusing on a variety of Route 66 locations, ranging from the popular to the obscure. The entirety of the Mother Road was included, all 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica. Along the way, Ellen captured images she thought depicted change along the Route, which ran the gamut from the inevitable decay of abandoned structures, to the revival of others and even towns along the way.

It was my job to expand on the notion of change, providing historical context and commentary.

Texas provided some of our favorite locations locations, even though Route 66’s course across the Panhandle is only about 180 miles long. The famous U-Drop Inn in Shamrock is a show-stopper for any traveler, and we included it because of its historic significance (built in 1936) as well as the pop culture relevance made manifest in the movie Cars.

A few miles west, the famous ghost town of Jericho can still be visited today. It is legendary in the annals of 66 in that during the 1920s and 1930s, enterprising locals are rumored to have dumped water on the dusty, dirt road by night, and then charged people money by day to drag them out of the muck.

In Conway there’s the lesser-known Slug Bug Ranch, part homage to Stanley Marsh 3’s Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo and part tribute to one of the most popular cars to ever roll down American highways.

Conway, like virtually every town in the Panhandle, is anchored by a towering grain elevator visible for miles but also has its fair share of abandonment.

Amarillo is the biggest city near the middle of Route 66, and so we made certain to give it its due. Well, and because hometown, you know. The Herring Hotel, once Amarillo’s Grand Lady of lodging, was located right along the edge of Route 66 as it ran through downtown, certainly capturing many a weary traveler for a night’s rest. Historic Southwest 6th Avenue is full of photogenic spots, and Ellen saw fit to juxtapose a lonely Texas U.S. 66 sign with the First Bank Southwest building behind it. Finally, the hand-painted Bates Motel sign near the Cadillac Ranch always turns heads with its dark humor referencing a timeless classic movie.

open up even more, and the flat expanse that is the Panhandle becomes profound.

Wildorado provided backdrop to illustrate the loneliness that grows as one ventures west, with Glenrio, perhaps the best of all Route 66 ghost towns, providing bookend duties at the New Mexico state line. It’s a ghost town in two states, with the abandoned gas stations at Exit 0 as evidence of failed attempts at survival during the interstate era, and the Longhorn Cafe and First/Last Motel on old 66 the vestiges of far better times in the 1950s.

Ellen and I both realized we shared the same passion, and with the support and guidance of Udo, we had a finished product.

After several reviews and revisions, our book was published on October 10, 2019, by Oklahoma University Press. It is available online as well as locally and at boutique hotels and gift shops up and down Route 66.

SURVIVING THE FAMILY A Recovery Program For The Holidays

Surviving the Holidays Surviving the holidays can be tough for multiple reasons, but family is often at the center of the stress. Some relatives may be annoying, obnoxious, or simply irritating.

Maybe you spent most of the year hiding their social media posts, being “busy” when they come to town, and politely avoiding them, but the holidays are the one time you cannot get away from family.

Although you may not be able to avoid those difficult family members, there are ways to minimize their negative impact on your holiday. The following techniques can help you deal with each of these stressors.

The First Stressor The first stressor is feeling judged by family. We do a lot of things to please others and avoid judgment. Ultimately, the story playing in our own heads will determine how we feel. Even though it is not easy at times, you are in control of your thoughts, emotions, actions and words. You cannot control other people, but you can control yourself around those people. The

statement that helps me keep perspective is, “Nothing in this world has meaning until I give it meaning.” Let go of the need for approval from others, particularly the ones that annoy you. Your worth comes from your view of self only. There is no meaning in another person’s judgment unless you allow it.

The Second Stressor The second stressor is the drama that other people bring with them. When other people tried to drag my grandmother into their drama, she would say, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” This perspective that another person’s drama was their responsibility and not mine has served me well. When you have that relative that tells you their sob story about being broke with the hint of needing to borrow money, remember that you never bought a ticket to their circus. When that crazy relative wants to tell you all about how the world is out to get them, remember that those are not your monkeys. You are there to see the family, eat a great meal and celebrate the season, not to join the drama club.

The Final Stressor The final stressor is doing things out of obligation rather than a sincere desire to help. When we do things because we think

others will be upset with us if we don’t, the natural emotions are dread and regret. The best antidote to those emotions is to live in the present moment instead of dreading the future or regretting the past. We are at peace when we let go of those time periods outside of our control and live fully in the present. When you feel your mind wander, bring it back to the exact moment you are in and express gratitude for the moment.

Stress from the Holidays Stress from the holidays, our families or difficult relatives may not be completely avoidable, but there are several methods of managing through the stress. We can begin to control the stories that play in our minds. Remember, you control the meaning that you give to any event. You control your focus within any interaction.

And finally, you control whether your mind is in the present, the past or the future. You will find the peace of the holidays in the present.

HOLIDAY MELODIES the Sound of Hope They are the heralds of the holidays.

Instantly recognizable. The melodies so memorable and familiar that the pull to hum along, happily or not, is almost irresistible. Radio favorites like “All I Want for Christmas is You,” sacred staples like “Joy to the World,” and caroling classics like “Jingle Bells” sound in the season, seemingly earlier and earlier every year. Christmas offers a time to focus on the good and look for hope in a world filled with tragedy and hardship. And holiday music, love it or hate it, draws out the optimism that so often gets buried under the crushing weight of busy lives and recurring responsibilities.

Consider: The Nutcracker.

For many, ballet at any other time of the year would not be a first, second or third choice for a Friday night. Or Saturday afternoon. Or Sunday matinee. But every year, crowds flock to the Lone Star Ballet’s production at the Amarillo Civic Center to witness a magical battle between good and evil in a fairy tale land where children’s imaginations rule. The music created by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in the 1800s has become such a part of mainstream culture today that it provides a backdrop for mischief, grandeur or silliness in commercials and TV shows. So if we know the story and we know the music, why then do we still come out to see the show? The r i s e and fall of the orchestra and the choreographed perfection of the performers awakens an oft dormant piece of our minds offering an escape, a period of time where we can remember the innocence of Christmas Eve as a child -- the anticipation surrounding the presents in gilded

wrapping paper, carefully placed under the tree, waiting to be ripped open and bursting with adventures for our eager imaginations.

The Nutcracker is just one of many musical holiday traditions. It would be remiss to not mention the focus of Christmas’ namesake: the birth of Jesus Christ. The story of the Wise Men and others on a pilgrimage to see the Prince of Peace told through the wandering tail of the bright star in “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and the parum-pum-pum-pum of “The Little Drummer Boy.” The core of these songs and their counterparts focuses on hope for a better world, the very center of Christians’ Christmas message. Christ’s birth in a lowly manger, no crib for his head, represents a gift to mankind and the keeping of promises made to generations of faithful. It marks a turning point in the world’s trajectory that is magnitudes greater than any scientific advancement humankind has stumbled upon. It led to a religious reckoning where old ideals and complex rituals clashed with new teachings focused on a simple principle: love everyone. In churches, school auditoriums and concert halls around the world, Handel’s Messiah tells of this historic time. The oratorio, originally composed for Easter, captures the weight of waiting all those years for the promised Savior, the dream for the new future His birth gives and through the unmistakable “Hallelujah Chorus,” serves as a celebration of an eventual triumph over death.

And regardless of whether you follow or believe in this doctrine, these songs can help frame the holidays as a time of giving.

But for some, the Christmas season seems to

hold no hope, no wish to give.

For them, the holidays only serve as reminders of personal tragedies and losses more varied than the carols we sing.

Husbands. Wives. Children. Parents. Cherished people of every relation. The pain unfathomable to anyone who hasn’t suffered its sting and the numbness that follows.

The joy others so exuberantly display feels cutting and cruel when placed beside such loss. American Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow expressed this dull reality with his work “Christmas Bells,” which would later be turned into the carol “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Hardship steeped his life. His first wife died after a miscarriage six months into a pregnancy. He remarried, then lost their third child, a one-year-old baby girl named Fanny. Time passed. Old wounds healed. Then tragedy struck once more.

His wife Frances passed away after an accidental fire, and Longfellow received terrible burns trying to extinguish the flames with his bare hands. Then, at the height of the Civil War, his son enlisted and was critically wounded in battle one month before Christmas. On December 25th, 1863, Longfellow wrote these words: “There is no peace on earth I said, for hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth goodwill to men.” These words continue to resonate with anyone who struggles to find joy in the holiday season. Anyone who feels alone or forgotten. Anyone who knows intimately the emptiness that comes with Christmas without a loved one.

But Longfellow’s poem does not end there. The ringing church bells near his home persisted, pushing through

the perception of mocking, incessant and insisting, “Wild and sweet, the words repeat, of peace on earth goodwill to men.”

So when temperatures drop and breath mists, when

the peal of bells accompanies flush-faced ringers in red, when holiday songs flood the radio and sound through the speakers in department stores, when carolers' choruses drift from open doors, let the music of the season cut through the distractions. Let the words “silent night, holy night” draw you back to a simpler view of December 25th, one where gifts of goods fade and gifts of ourselves linger.

Let the melody of “Mary Did You Know?” inspire acts of service to strangers and neighbors, especially for those who may not feel included. Join in the chorus of “Joy to the World” and let it bring out the holiday spirit, as only the old familiar carols can. Let the music show the way to hope.

I may be in the minority, but I actually enjoy the winter season. With the shorter days and early darkness setting in there is just something about coming into a nice warm home, donning some soft fleecy pajamas and really relaxing in the comforts of home. A cup of hot cider can hit the spot or a nice hot chocolate, although I always find myself tipping toward addiction if I’m not careful. I love winter foods like stew or chili and cornbread but at the top of the list, of course, are cinnamon rolls. A soft warm roll right out of the oven just makes the season complete.

Then there is winter weather here on the high plains. It is very fun, but often very challenging, to track and predict. We have “weather whiplash,” a phrase I came up with to describe those events where we can go from 70 degrees to 15 in one night, sunshine to ice and snow in the blink of an eye. We spend a great deal of time and effort tracking and then digging into those complex winter systems. A fresh dumping of snow can be a beautiful thing, but when whipped up by severe wind can generate a crippling blizzard. We strive to assist people in planning for and dealing with the consequences of those blizzards and storms that can result in serious impacts to our area.

Ingredients: Dough: 1/4 ounce package yeast 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 milk 1/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg 3 1/2 to 4 cups all purpose flour

Filling: 1/2 cup melted butter, plus more for pan 3/4 cup sugar, plus more for pan 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Glaze: 4 tablespoons butter 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 to 6 tablespoons hot water

Directions:

1 Heat oven to 350 degrees F. bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. In a large bowl mix milk, sugar, melted butter, salt and egg. Add 2 cups of flour and mix 2 Inuntila small smooth. Add yeast mixture. Mix in remaining flour until dough is easy to handle. Knead dough on lightly floured surface for 5 to 10 minutes.

Place in well-greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled in size, usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

3 When doubled in size, punch down dough. Roll out on a floured surface into a 15 by 9-inch rectangle. Spread melted butter all over dough. Mix

sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over buttered dough. Sprinkle with walnuts, pecans, or raisins if desired. Beginning at the 15-inch side, roll up dough and pinch edge together to seal. Cut into 12 to 15 slices.

4 Coat the bottom of baking pan with butter and sprinkle with sugar. Place cinnamon roll slices close together in the pan and let rise until dough is doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake for about 30 minutes or until nicely browned.
