The heat is on! The summer we have been waiting for so long is finally here; heat waves, sticky tube journeys but, believe me I’m not complaining as I really enjoy London when the sun shines and you can feel such a positive vibe throughout this fantastic city.

London in the Summer is my favourite time of year for entertainment here at Primo. I also get to showcase my p a s s i o n f o r re f re s h i n g c o c k t a i l s including my new recipe ‘Night and Day’ inspired by the longer days and shorter nights. It’s a fruity based cocktail that explores key seasonal ingredients including my favourite, passionfruit.

This is also the time to enjoy London outside and with so many events organised across the city you cannot miss what could be the greatest summer yet. I would recommend in August visiting the Tr a f a l g a r S q u a r e F e s t i v a l w h i c h incorporates three weeks of free music, theatre, dance and art. Also, don’t forget the famous Notting Hill Carnival and in September the Thames Festival just a few minutes away, this is a weekend of free events along the banks of the river, with live music, dancing and fireworks. This August and September we have added several new artists to the program including the amazing Vanessa Haynes; one of the lead singers from successful band Incognito. The talented and beautiful Sweethearts will start their monthly residency. Janine Johnson will also perform all the best songs from the James Bond movie soundtracks and a new concept brought directly from the New York Jazz Tap Project. Hopefully we’ll make the transition from summer to autumn easier for you.

August Events

We have so much to look forward to this month especially if you are a fan of our Sushi and Sashimi restaurant Ichi with a new delicious menu. I am pleased to introduce our new Ichi Sushi Afternoon Tea which promises to be a unique experience of taste created by our Head Chef Okamoto (recent finalist at the Eat Sushi Awards 2013). There is also something for our smaller guests, we are introducing our new children’s bento box which will include a number of Sushi rolls and Sashimi, a great way to introduce our smaller guests to this fine Japanese cuisine. Finally, I wish you all a fantastic time in London this summer, we look forward to welcoming you here at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. And don’t forget, if you love Primo Bar or have any feedback, please leave your comments on Tripadvisor.

From a very early age Zeu Azevedo has been on stage starting his career playing alongside his father; singer and composer Cidinho Azevedo. They toured Brazil together until he moved to London in 2002 where he has built a reputation for Forro, Mpb, Bossas and Samba internationally. Zeu Azevedo is a singer and composer; he also plays the accordion, piano, guitar and percussion. Touring the UK this summer, Zeu promotes Brazilian music and culture with his band.

International drag performer “La Voix” brings her popular show to Westminster’s hottest nightspot. This musical show brings together comedy, anecdotes, songs and stories from the rich career of this glamorous performer.

The Stevie Wonder Experience band was conceived by renowned saxophonist Renato D’Aiello and fronted by Rober to Angrisani, a quintet with strong roots in gospel, jazz and pop. The idea was to explore the interaction between Renato’s jazz solos on top melodies and harmonies of Stevie Wonder’s compositions which offer an inspiring territory for improvisation. Roberto is director of the “Urban Voices” choir which sang at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games and at the recent BAFTA awards.

Alex Charles is a British-born singer and musician who enjoyed great success in the charts in the 80s and 90s and fronted soul group Heatwave for over 25 years.

Considered one of South Africa’s top jazz singers, producer and arranger Richard Nile says “not only does Kate have a beautiful voice, remarkable timing and superb intonation but her innate musicality gives her that rarest of musical accomplishments: taste.”

Originally harking from Wales, Iona is a multitalented singer, songwriter, guitarist and harpist. With an already impressive selection of appearances and credits including; headlining the “Young Hero Awards” for Scarlets FM and The Bay Radio, Thomas will also be supporting X-Factor finalists The Reason and Andy Abraham on their upcoming engagements. Catch her while you can as bookings for 2013 are going to keep her very busy.

If you’re looking for a night of fun, nostalgia and great music, Tamsin and Lorna invite you to rewind to the 80’s.

As a writer and performer, Julian Burdock has worked with some popular artists over the years from Seal to Beverley Knight. Now with his new formation, he performs one of the best Beatles tribute acts on the circuit.

Jessica Berry is an up and coming vocalist and song-writer based in London. Her warm, distinct tone lends itself perfectly to both pop/soul and jazz and she currently boasts a London residency at Soho House’s “Little House”.

Jennifer Moore is a London based singer songwriter who has performed for the rich and famous all over the world including for Sir Paul McCartney.

The late jazz legend Sir John Dankworth predicted “a very bright future with the possibility of Atila’s name eventually ending up in lights” and still in his mid-twenties, Atila has gone on to establish himself as one of Britain’s most exciting vocal talents.

Aline was born in Southern Brazil and had her first experience with music singing in a choir. In early 2011 she moved to London where she became resident of the Bossa Nova Lounge night at Guanabara Bar as well as performing in well-known venues like Ronnie Scott’s, Coco Bamboo, Somerset House, Made in Brazil. She is now working on new Brazilian and English song projects.

Charlotte Silver, Laura Ingham and Lauren Urquhart. The girls all trained together at The London School of Musical Theatre and have now created a niche vocal act fusing the sounds of Jazz and pop with a 1940’s barber shop twist on top. The Sweethearts have a salacious, charismatic, and charming elegance that teases the eyes whilst their powerful and original vocals seduce the ears; watching this fascinating vocal harmonising cabaret trio is irresistible.

Michele Drees’ drumming takes in any number of influences, and while she is perfectly at home with Jazz, Funk, R&B and Pop, she has displayed a fondness for Latin rhythms during her career. Having played with the likes of k.d. lang, Seal and Susanne Vega, as well as an experimental five year stretch with drum and bass pioneers Badmarsh and Shri, she is able to tackle anything that comes her way, and as such audiences can expect something of a mixed, but perfectly honed bag for this performance.

Curtis began performing at the young age of 16 and has now performed in over 20 different countries. Curtis has performed in lead roles in several West End musicals and now brings his Soul and Motown duo to Primo Bar. Singing along side Curtis is Deborah, lead vocalist in The Dreamgirlz.

“Renato is a superlative saxophonist with a passionate and poetic soul. He has all the virtues – a beautiful sense of time and pacing and a technique which effortlessly projects his brilliantly flowing ideas.” Ian Carr, Jazz writer (Miles Davis’ Biographer)

SADAYUKI OKAMOTO

HOW DID YOU BECOME A LEADING SUSHI CHEF? When I was 21, I became a Kitchen Assistant at Kappoh Seigetsu Izakaya (Japanese sake bar serving food) in Tokyo then worked up to Senior Chef in 1985. It was here that I learnt all my skills in Japanese food and artistry. I moved to London in 1987 and have worked in many restaurants including Soho’s Mezzo, The Savoy, Cocoon and The Ivy club. I joined Ichi Sushi and Sashimi Bar as Head Chef when it opened in 2010. WHO IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON YOU HAVE COOKED FOR?

16

PP_Primo_id5.5_Aug-Sept13.indd 18-19

I had the honour to cook for the Japanese Prime-Minister, in 1993: Moihiro Hosokawa. I hope I made an impression!

WHAT OTHER WORLD FOODS DO YOU ENJOY?

drink – so I would recommend pairing a glass or two with your meal!

I really enjoy Chinese food – it is a complex cuisine with so many regional variances and as a culture the Chinese also apply a lot of technique and visual artistry to their cuisine.

WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY TODAY?

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LOCAL RECIPE OR INGREDIENT? I like Blow Fish a lot. It gets a lot of notoriety because of how it looks (a big prickly balloon) and because of the extensive training sushi chefs must undergo before they are allowed to prepare it for sushi as its organs contains a lethal toxin. However, as a dish it is renowned in Japan for its delicacy and unique taste which I highly appreciate. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SAKE? I must confess Sake is not a drink I personally have a taste for – although it is of course the traditional drink of Japan. However, at ICHI we pride ourselves on offering a very high quality selection, showcasing the many varieties of the

I like the personal contact with our customers and to see their reaction when they try sushi – especially new varieties or more experimental flavours. Sushi has become very popular in London and standards are now really high. I want to see my customers happy, it is what I strive for every day. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ALTERNATIVE CAREER OF CHOICE? I like pottery a lot. That is my hobby. I would have liked to be a potter – maybe I could create tableware for the restaurant! CAN YOU SUM UP YOUR CULINARY STYLE IN THREE WORDS? I describe my culinary style as classic, delicate and high class. 17

Josephine Desmond has been wowing audiences throughout the UK and Europe whilst fronting various bands and acoustic duos. Expect a high mezzo soprano voice from a supremely talented jazz vocalist.

Soulstar are a fresh acoustic duo giving an original twist to contemporary and classic tunes. Katy and Paul are successful musicians in their own right and have been in high demand as a duo for years.

The late jazz legend Sir John Dankworth predicted “a very bright future with the possibility of Atila’s name eventually ending up in lights” and still in his mid-twenties, Atila has gone on to establish himself as one of Britain’s most exciting vocal talents. “One of London’s finest new vocal talents for 2009” – BBC London TV.

Peet Rothwell has fast become one of the most popular Michael Bublé tributes today. His vocal style and charisma supersedes what you would expect from a top tribute to the most celebrated crooner of all time.

As a vocal and guitar collaboration, recent years have seen Soulstar travel to venues of all sizes across the globe.

Divyarup’s Latin Band is a lively threepiece band playing original samba, bossa nova, baiao, funk and Latin jazz. They have all gained experience having per for med at a variety of venues in Londonand worldwide. Divyarup has recently been nominated at the Brazilian International Press Awards for his album Tempo de Luz recorded in Brazil with well known artists including Bocato, Sergio Bello and Madan.
