There have certainly been lots of sporting opportunities for our students since we returned back to school. After Sports Day we participated in two BJSL events; Cross country last Friday and T ball on Tuesday, as well as sending three teams to the Under 13 Football competition at JIS. Congratulations to all of the children that participated and represented our school so very well. Congratulations also to the 91 Teraja and Melilas students that participated in the Chess Competition over the past couple of weeks. A grand final will take place between two chess masters on Monday - good luck! Learning continues to take centre stage; enjoy reading about the plethora of activities and experiences that your children are immersing themselves in. It was wonderful to welcome teachers from St. Margaret's School this week, where good practice was shared. This is something our school does so well and so extensively and we will continue to promote similar collaborations for the remainder of this academic year and beyond. Next week, we were expecting a PENTA inspector at the school. PENTA is an accredited inspectorate for UK and international schools; it will help us with our strategic planning and when applying for any regional and international school memberships. They were to be focusing on a safeguarding audit of the school whilst also conducting a pre-inspection. This has now been cancelled, at late notice, but we are aiming to reschedule asap. We will go ahead with the scheduled student survey however, focusing on how safe and supported the children feel at school. Best of luck to our footballers for their game with ISB next Wednesday. A gentle reminder that school will be closed for our half term break from next Thursday 8th and we will recommence on Wednesday 14th February. Wishing you all an enjoyable weekend ahead. In Imagine That unit, we had a special visitor to share some of her amazing arts. Nazurah, one of the local artists, came to show us how to doodles and creates art with different methods and tools. We all agree to her saying that art is the way to express our feelings and emotions. Together we had a blast creating our very own art and ‘add on’ to her doodle strip.

The Water Cycle P1 As part of our IEYC Unit ‘Weather Wonders’ we have been learning all about the water cycle. Last week, we investigated puddles to see where they would evaporate the quickest.
This week we had a special visitor in school to teach us about terrariums. Lochana taught us how the glass jar contains a tiny water cycle. The new words we have been learning are evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

On Friday, January 26th, the staff of Panaga School from P1 to P3 opened their classrooms to allow teachers from St. Margaret’s School in Seria to observe and learn new skills during the sessions to support key areas of development. It was a successful morning for both schools to share opportunities, engage in learning conversations and discuss the next steps for their school.

P2 Art: Celebrating with Masks and Body Painting
In our Celebration unit, we have been learning how different cultures use masks and body art during celebrations. We identified a few of the masks and body art, then we made our own designs! Can you spot the Australian masks, the African masks and the Indian mehndi?

Mini Chefs ASA
P3 ASA: Mini Chefs Every Thursday, we are very excited to be at our Mini Chefs ASA. It’s a chance for us to use our chopping, pouring, measuring and recipe following skills. We’ve made ‘chocolate cake in a mug’, ‘fruit smoothies’, ‘cornflake cakes’ and a ‘fruit muesli layer’. We enjoy being able to taste test and try new foods that we wouldn’t normally choose. We have to use our best communication skills, listening carefully and following instructions.

P4 French lesson Last week, all the P4 students had a taster of French. At the beginning of the lesson, I told the students that they would be leaving the lesson speaking French. They did not believe me. First, we learned a song in French. Then the students had to choose one word from the song and write it on a post-it note. Every time the students heard the word, they had to raise their hand with the word attached. We did 3 words in total. This involved lifting hands and legs at random intervals. The students were unaware that the song was actually a short dialogue. After the song, we read the song as a dialogue. After a few practices, the students went around the room greeting each other and asking how they were. Towards the end of the lesson, I made sure that every student was able to say the dialogue. The lesson was a great fun and I thoroughly enjoyed teaching them!

A huge congratulations to Vian in P4S. In September, I held a poster competition to celebrate European Languages Day. The students were asked to create a poster that illustrates languages in their classroom. I submitted every poster on the EDL website. 1500 pictures from around the world were submitted. Vian’s picture was one of their favourite pictures. What a great achievement!

P7 French board games In P7 French, the students learnt how to conjugate the verb avoir (to have). Conjugation in French is very challenging as every subject pronoun has a different verb ending, unlike in English. After the students were introduced to the verb avoir and completed some exercises to recap the verb, the students were given a challenge. The students were asked to think of a game or song, or whatever they could think of that would recap this verb. Some students made some great videos with their own lyrics to recap the conjugation. Other students made their own board games and card games. They introduced the games and songs to each other. The students were also given the opportunity to try out the games. Overall it was a great success. Not only did the students design their own grammar products, they also revised the verb avoir in their own way. Well done P7!

P7 “Staycation” The P7 children had a staycation in the first week of the new term. This was to support them in staying away from home in order to help them prepare for a longer residential experience later in the year. The children had a great time and the P7 team would like to thank the additional staff who joined and the Panaga club and library section for supporting and keeping us fed and well educated. Together, making a difference.

Stop Frame Animation Club We are having a great time in Stop Frame Animation Club. So far, we have made movies with Lego and plasticine.

M2 Scratch Game design M2 have been learning about a range of different games and have been challenged to create their own games for a specific audience. They are doing an amazing job and I am really impressed with the Coding skills and Personal Qualities they are showing. We are looking forward to playing the games with P5 next term.

M1 ENGLISH GOTHIC
Gothic literature evokes an atmosphere of fear, horror, gloom and intrigue. The Gothic genre was popular during the 1800s with texts including Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and Dracula. The students have loved our introduction to this genre and have put in huge efforts to demonstrate their knowledge of the conventions of Gothic literature through creative means.

NTC Great Ocean Cleanup
When Dutchman and inventor Boyan Slat was 16 years old, he went on a diving trip at the Mediterranean Coast and found more plastic than sea creatures. He wrote his Extended Essay on the topic of the plastic pollution of our oceans and came up with a plan to clean them up. Today, Boyan’s initiative ‘the Great Ocean Cleanup’ is supported by millions of people from around the world and with the newest version of his invention he is convinced he can clean up the oceans by 2040. Our NTC students supported the Great Ocean Cleanup with a cleanup of Panaga’s beach. They collected over 20 bags of rubbish, mainly plastic bottles and flip flops. Well done to all! Let’s keep Panaga clean.

Teraja and Melilas Chess Competition 91 children in Teraja and Melilas have been taking part in this year’s chess competition. The children have demonstrated many of their personal qualities throughout the competition, which include perseverance, sportsmanship, and excellent thinking skills. The following children are their year group champion and will receive a trophy in the near future. P4 champion - David P5 champion - Ryan P6 champion - Branton P7 champion - Ethan M1 champion - Shane M2 champion - Edward The year group winners played against each other with Edward (M2) and Ryan (P5A) winning their games. They will play against each other in the whole school final on Monday, 5th February in the Teraja Hall. The children will be able to watch the game as the finalists’ moves will be projected onto the big screen in the hall. I’ll let you know who the king of the castle is in the next newsletter (please fork-ive the pun!).

BJSL Tee-Ball Our Tee-Ballers demonstrated their excellent batting and fielding skills at the BJSL competition at BSRC on Tuesday. In total our 6 teams won 13 of their 17 games. Our P5 and P7 teams both narrowly missed out on top spot finishing 2nd whilst our P6 team won all their games to win their competition. BJSL Cross-Country Congratulations to our BJSL Cross-Country Runners who demonstrated excellent powers of endurance at the event hosted by Hornbill on Friday last week. Highlights of the event were 3rd place for Alexander in P7; Louise 2nd and Skye 3rd in the P6 Girls race; Nathan 1st, Liam 2nd, Archie 3rd in the P6 Boys Race; Bauke 1st and Iyi 2nd in the P5 Boys Race.
