Greetings Palos Verdes,
This month, I’m excited to share something especially close to home— and heart. When my dear friend Alida Post reached out to tell me about her “Respect the Locals” campaign, I was instantly inspired. What began as a creative concept has grown into a powerful movement—thanks to Alida’s bold vision and deep commitment to connecting people with the land and sea we’re lucky enough to live among. She’s the powerhouse behind the dynamic duo of Alida Post and her husband, legendary artist John Van Hamersveld, and it’s no surprise this campaign, created in collaboration with several local organizations, is already making waves. This is advocacy through art at its best—and we’re honored to feature it in this issue.
We also thought it’d be fun to take advantage of our enviable location in Southern California and highlight a few summer day trips. Let’s be honest—we live in one of the most dynamic regions in the country. Head 45 minutes in any direction—north, south, east, or west—and you’ll find yourself in an entirely new world. Whether you’re on a budget or simply short on time, our team has rounded up a few easy, memorable escapes. And yet, as much as we love a good getaway, we also want to remind ourselves that sometimes the best trip is the one where you don’t leave at all. Palos Verdes truly is a paradise—breathtaking views, coastal trails, charming neighborhoods, and a community that cares. So whether you’re exploring new places or simply soaking up the view from your own backyard, I hope this issue inspires you to fully enjoy all the beauty and magic that surrounds us—right here at home.
With gratitude,
Kristin Borden

On a warm April evening in San Pedro, an auditorium filled with ocean lovers, conservationists, and curious locals gathered for a night of film and inspiration. The occasion? A special installment of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour, hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. But beyond the global stories on screen, a bold, local message was taking center stage: Respect the Locals.
The phrase, now immortalized on a vivid poster, anchors a new awareness campaign led by Alida Post. The design—featuring a brilliantly rendered Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly—isn’t just art for art’s sake. It’s part of Alida’s mission to spark deeper connections between people and the fragile ecosystems they live among.
“People kept assuming it was John’s project,” she laughed, referring to her husband, famed artist John Van Hamersveld. “I had to keep correcting them—this is my project! He’s just the guy with the pencil.” That “guy with the pencil” happens to be one of the most celebrated visual artists of his era, and his signed, limited-edition posters are now helping raise funds for habitat restoration and conservation work across the Peninsula.
The butterfly featured on the poster isn’t a random choice. It’s an endangered species native to the area—small, brilliant, and increasingly rare.
Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy
Proceeds from the poster sales go toward protecting this butterfly and its habitat, as well as supporting the nonprofits and wildlife care centers that make up a tight-knit conservation community in San Pedro and beyond.
One of those partners is the Marine Mammal Care Center, a crucial facility offering around-theclock care to injured and sick marine animals. Just minutes away are two other critical organizations: the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the International Bird Rescue Center. Alida hopes Respect the Locals will be a unifying effort that brings more visibility—and more funding—to all of them.
“There are so many people doing incredible work in this small pocket of the South Bay,” she said. “Why not connect those efforts through something visual and powerful that sparks conversation?”
The campaign launched during a highly successful weekend of film screenings, with over 700 attendees across two venues. Along with the films, the events featured engaging guest speakers, including wildlife advocates, educators, and local leaders. John Van Hamersveld attended in person to sign posters, while Alida introduced the project and its purpose to a captivated audience.
The early buzz has been promising. Posters are currently available at partner locations, and those who can’t purchase in person can request one by emailing Alida directly. Each print is $50, signed, and helps fund real conservation efforts— from trail work to invasive plant removal to wildlife rehabilitation.
With strong community response and a clear purpose, Respect the Locals is shaping up to be more than a one-time art drop. Alida envisions a growing series of artwork that highlights different species, centers, and challenges facing the local environment. The common thread? A call to respect the creatures and habitats we share our coastline with.
“This is just the beginning,” Alida says. “If we want to protect what’s special about where we live, we have to start by paying attention. That’s what this project is about—seeing, appreciating, and respecting the locals.”

There’s something magical about stepping out of Palos Verdes and into a different slice of L.A.—especially when it comes with buttery popcorn and a hit of cinematic nostalgia. For a summer day trip, we’re heading to Eagle Rock, where a beloved cultural gem is spinning stories and rewinding time: Vidiots.
Reopened in 2023 inside the historic Eagle Theatre, this nonprofit cinema collective is more than a movie house. It’s a film-fueled time machine, a pop culture playground, and a welcoming hub for cinephiles and casual viewers alike.
What began in 1985 as a labor of love by founders Cathy Tauber and Patty Polinger has grown into a vibrant mission to keep film culture alive, inclusive, and accessible. Inside, you’ll find over 60,000 dVds, Blu-rays, and rare VHS tapes—part of a living archive designed to spark connection through cinema.
Beyond rentals, Vidiots features a 271-seat theater screening indie debuts, global classics, community events, and filmmaker q&As. It’s a space where diverse voices shine and storytelling takes center stage. So cue up your favorite soundtrack, grab a coffee on Colorado Boulevard, and make a day of it. Eagle Rock’s calling—and at Vidiots, the reels are always rolling.

Take a quick day trip from PV and drive 1.5 hours down to Laguna Beach for a beautiful seaside escape! We recommend heading to Wood’s Cove, a small, stunning beach known for its crystal-clear turquoise water. It’s the perfect spot to relax with friends or family, while the beach is on the smaller side, it’s easy to keep an eye on little ones while enjoying the sun.
For lunch, stop by Active Culture, a local favorite offering bowls, smoothies, and breakfast burritos made with high-quality, whole ingredients. Their dishes are both healthy and full of flavor, perfect after a late morning at the beach.
While you’re in town, take a stroll down the streets and explore some of Laguna’s charming boutique shops. Be sure to visit The Shop, TWIG, Laguna Exchange, Soulshine Laguna, and The Bead Shop, among many others. At The Bead Shop(899 S Coast Hwy), you can even make your own bracelet or pick out permanent jewelry for a fun, crafty souvenir.

One of my favorite day trips from PV is just 45 minutes north—Little Tokyo in downtown LA. This colorful neighborhood feels like a quick escape to Japan, with culture, cuisine, and charm around every corner.
Start your visit at Japanese Village Plaza, where red lanterns sway overhead and the scent of fresh mochi fills the air. Grab a matcha latte or iced yuzu drink from Café dulce and stroll through shops offering everything from anime merch to imported Japanese snacks.
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with daikokuya, known for its rich, flavorful ramen that’s well worth the wait. Or opt for Marugame udon, where you can build your own bowl and add crispy tempura on the side.
Spend the afternoon browsing Kinokuniya Bookstore—a must for lovers of Japanese literature, manga, and gorgeous stationery. Then step into the Japanese American National Museum to explore exhibits on culture, history, and resilience.
Here in SoCal we are blessed with a multitude of attractions, restaurants, activities, and just all out fun! Just 30 minutes away from PV we find ourselves in the city of Long Beach, CA. One of the areas most underrated gems, offering an unbeatable mix of attractions, diverse foods, and fun activities that make it a must-visit destination.
Personally, I love walking along Shoreline Aquatic Park and taking in the beautiful views of the city, Lions Lighthouse, and the queen Mary before visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific.
For lunch and drinks, I like going to this cool spot, The 4th Horseman. Their pizza is to die for literally! If you’re into bold visuals, horror-themed decor, heavy music, eclectic brews, and over-the-top-pizzas, including various vegan options then this spot is right up your alley.
Before heading home, stop by Fugetsu-do, a family-run shop that’s been crafting traditional Japanese sweets for over 100 years. Grab a box of colorful mochi to take a little piece of Tokyo back to the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
One place that always calls me back when I need my fix of LA is Melrose Avenue, a melting pot of urban culture a little over an hour from Palos Verdes.
I start my adventure with breakfast at Fratelli Café, then arm myself with their Lavender Mocha Latte and hit the avenue. Famous for mural and graffiti art that decorates store fronts and alleyways, it’s an open air gallery with a myriad of expressive styles— it’s ever-changing, so I always make sure to take a few pictures.
Melrose hosts clothing for all tastes, from punk and funk to chic, being on of the best streets in LA if you’re looking for something unique. Wasteland, an institution of the avenue, is known not only for it’s vintage clothing, but also a not-so-secret go-to for rock stars and celebrities. For a fresh look I head to Le Joli or Posers Hollywood.
At lunchtime, Crossroads Kitchen offers a bit of everything with a hint of Italian, or LALA’s Argentine Grill for classic regional fare. There’s so many choices packed on the avenue—Thai, Mexican, French—you can’t go wrong by choosing what your tastes buds want. Then I hit the book stores. Mega City One is everything comic book related. Architecture Books feels more like a gallery than a book store, the shelves filled with both beautiful and hard to find books from art to literature. you can also get a sweet nibble, coffee or tea for the ride back to the Peninsula.

Pasadena is the donnelly family’s favorite day trip, there is so much to do there, we have been known to stay over night!
We love to visit The Huntington—it is easy to imagine you are on an overseas holiday as you wander the art galleries, library and gardens including spectacular Chinese and Japanese Gardens . Plan your visit in advance and make tea reservations in the Rose Garden Tea Room for the ultimate splurge!
While in the Pasadena area be sure to stop by Old Pasadena and explore Colorado Boulevard for unique shops and great places to eat. Our favorite places include Noodle Street for amazing hand-pulled Chinese noodle dishes in a modern setting, or Mama Lu’s dumpling House for delicious traditional Chinese family style dining set in a historical buidling with antique decor and crystal chandaliers. Another family favoriate is urth Caffé, which has a beautiful and electic vibe and offers breakfast lunch and dinner or coffee, tea and amazing desserts.
After eating, stroll the streets and walk past amazing buildings such as the historic First united Methodist Church opened in 1924 and known for its beautiful stained glass windows, many of which were made in Los Angeles. Around the corner you will come across the impressive First Church of Christ, Scientist built between 1907 and 1909 with a Neo-classical temple and central dome. Finally, do not miss a visit to Vroman’s Bookstore, Southern California’s largest and oldesnt Independent bookstore since 1894! Find the perfect summer read, or shop for amazing gifts, cards, souvenirs and more. The best part of this get-away, you can often make it home in under an hour if coming home after 8pm.

Don’t let their size fool you—microgreens are like the espresso shots of the veggie world: small, strong, and totally energizing. These leafy little legends are the superheroes of nutrition, wearing tiny green capes and packing a serious punch. From fine dining tables to sunny windowsills and even outer space, microgreens are taking root everywhere, proving that big things really do come in small, leafy packages.
A few years ago, we featured Jonathan Ho, whose vibrant microgreen stand at the Palos Verdes Farmers Market every Sunday continues to impress with its color, flavor, and freshness. His passion for growing nutrient-dense greens right here in our community has helped introduce many locals to the power of these tiny plants.
So, what are microgreens? First things first: microgreens are not sprouts. While sprouts are grown in water and eaten seed-to-root, microgreens are cultivated in soil (or a growing medium), and only the stems and leaves are harvested, usually when they’re just 1–3 inches tall. That makes them the adorable toddlers of the plant world—full of energy, flavor, and vibrant charm.
Don’t be fooled by their size. Microgreens can pack up to 40 times more nutrients than their full-grown counterparts. Red cabbage microgreens, for example, are brimming with vitamins C, E, and betacarotene. That’s like upgrading your salad to superhero status.
But they’re not just about health—they’re flavor bombs, too. Radish microgreens bring the heat with a peppery zing, sunflower shoots taste like fresh nuts, and sorrel microgreens add a tangy citrus twist. And let’s not forget: their vivid greens, reds, and purples make any dish Instagram-worthy.
So why are microgreens having their moment? Because they’re everything we want in a modern green: fast-growing (ready in just 7–21 days), eco-friendly (low water, low space), and easy enough for kids to grow with delight. Whether you’re sprouting them on a city windowsill or dreaming of gardening in zero gravity (NASA sure is), these tiny leaves are proving they’re more than just a garnish— they’re the future of food.
Microgreens might be tiny, but they’re turning heads, and taste buds, everywhere. Whether you’re sprucing up a snack, adding flair to your meal, or growing your own batch in a sunny window, these mini greens are proof that great things really do come in small packages. So go ahead grow, eat, and revel in the might of the microgreen!

Enzo, the lovable therapy dog who captured hearts in last August’s PV Magazine, is back this summer doing what he does best—bringing comfort, joy, and healing to foster children at Camp RennerVation in Nevada.
Before he became the gentle soul we know today, Enzo was rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea by the doVE Project. His journey took a turn for the better when Jennifer and Mark Giacalone welcomed him into their home in Rancho Palos Verdes after a careful adoption process.
At first, Enzo was timid and unsure—understandable after all he’d been through. But with patience, kindness, and a loving home, he slowly came out of his shell. The Giacalones soon realized that Enzo had a gift—his calm, affectionate presence seemed to lift the spirits of everyone he met. With their encouragement, he began volunteering in nursing homes, schools, and community events, spreading his quiet comfort wherever he went.
In 2024, Enzo became part of Camp RennerVation, a special place created by actor Jeremy Renner, and his sister Kym, to offer foster and at-risk youth a summer of laughter, connection, and self-discovery. Enzo quickly became a favorite among the campers, many of whom saw parts of their own stories reflected in his. Enzo’s unconditional love and acceptance helped the kids forget the trauma, neglect and abuse that they’d suffered in the past. That big white dog—once scared and uncertain—had found his purpose, and in doing so, helped others begin to heal too.
Enzo’s journey from a frightened puppy to a beloved therapy dog is a powerful reminder of how love and second chances can change everything. Without the doVE Project, Enzo wouldn’t be here. Instead, he’s not only surviving—he’s thriving, and giving back in the finest way he can.
As Jeremy Renner put it last year, “Enzo was a magnet that united our campers… He’s a star!”
This summer, Enzo returns to Nevada for the 2nd Annual Camp RennerVation, where he’ll work his magic during two week-long sessions serving more than 200 foster and at-risk kids.
Session 1 (Ages 8–13): June 30 – July 5
Session 2 (Ages 14–18): August 3 – August 7
Enzo’s heartwarming journey continues, you can be a part of it by following him on Instagram @ Enzosincredible Journey. For more information: RennervationFoundation.org and dove-Project.org.
