Dear Palos Verdes,

issue no. 66

Welcome to November, PV — the season of gratitude, gatherings, and those breathtaking sunsets that almost make the time change feel worth it. As I sit down to write this, my heart is especially full. We’ve already jumped into the holiday spirit with what’s quickly becoming a favorite tradition — trimming the PV Magazine tree for Toberman Neighborhood Center’s Parade of Trees. This year’s theme, “Heart of the Peninsula,” came to life alongside the ever-inspiring Cindy Donnelly, whose creativity and enthusiasm reminded me just how much I adore the holidays — especially when they involve a little crafting (and a lot of glitter!). Once again, I’m filled with gratitude for the deep generosity and heart that run through this community. I can’t wait for you all to see it.

This month’s issue is packed with the magic of the season. Our Holiday Gift Guide is brimming with local finds — treasures from right here in our backyards, thoughtfully curated to make every gift feel meaningful. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect hostess gift or a great bottle of wine, we’ve got you covered.

And speaking of joyful traditions... for the third year in a row, I had the honor of judging the Halloween Costume Contest at the Promenade on the Peninsula. It never fails to put the biggest smile on my face — from tiny navy pilots to whole families arriving in full costume. That kind of joy and togetherness? It’s exactly what I’m grateful for. It even stirred up a bit of nostalgia, remembering the years I turned my home into a full-blown haunted house for the entire month of October! Those days may be behind me, but the fun memories remain.

This issue is also bursting with “Around Town” highlights — more than six pages celebrating the amazing people, passionate volunteers, and special moments that continue to bring our community to life.

Thank you for being part of this journey — for reading, continuing to encourage us, and supporting the local businesses and nonprofits that make the Peninsula so special. Here’s to grateful hearts, cozy moments, and the traditions (old and new) that make the holidays here unforgettable.

Wishing you and yours a month filled with warmth, wonder, and a whole lot to be thankful for.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Kristin Borden

A Thankful Path Forward

Welcoming Rabbi Julia Knobloch to Temple Beth El

Temple Beth El in San Pedro has welcomed a new spiritual leader—and with her, a fresh chapter of creativity, cultural depth, and heartfelt connection. rabbi Julia Knobloch, an award-winning poet, documentary filmmaker, and newly ordained rabbi, officially stepped into her role this month at the historic reform congregation, marking a new era for one of Southern California’s oldest Jewish communities.

Founded in 1922 and recognized as the second oldest working synagogue in los Angeles, Temple Beth El has long served as a spiritual anchor for families across the South Bay. Its congregation includes members from the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the Beach Cities, long Beach, Northern Orange County, and beyond through its growing online

community. rooted in tradition yet unafraid of innovation, Temple Beth El has embraced modern forms of expression and engagement—and rabbi Knobloch embodies that commitment to both heritage and growth.

Before entering the rabbinate, rabbi Knobloch built a creative career as a writer and filmmaker, including work with National Geographic, and her poetry has been published in literary journals and collections worldwide. She has authored two books of poetry—Do Not Return and Book of Failed Salvation—with a third, Liner Notes, expected in 2026. Her writing, often reflective and lyrical, explores themes of identity, spiritual journey, and personal transformation.

Her path to spiritual leadership has always centered on deep human connection. “At Temple Beth El, I see a community ready to engage not only with tradition but also with the deeper questions of identity, meaning, and belonging,” she shared. “It is a privilege to help shape that journey through words, ritual, and relationship. I believe in the power of storytelling to connect, heal, and inspire.”

Ordained at Hebrew union College–Jewish Institute of religion in los Angeles, her spiritual practice is deeply rooted in daily gratitude—a hallmark of Jewish life. “Judaism reminds us to notice the blessings of everyday things we often take for granted,” she says. “The simple act of waking up in the morning is met with thanks.” rabbi Knobloch begins each day with the traditional Modah Ani prayer, a brief but soulful expression of gratitude for being alive and awake to the gift of a new day.

She served as a student rabbi at Beth Knesset Bamidbar in lancaster, completed internships at Temple Beth Hillel in Valley Village and Temple Beth Am in los Angeles, and spent time with a reform congregation at Kibbutz Ketura in Israel. Before her rabbinic studies, she held leadership roles with the union for reform Judaism and uJAFederation of New york, shaping programs that strengthened Jewish life across North America.

At Temple Beth El, she joins longtime spiritual partner Cantor Ilan Davidson, who has led the congregation for over three decades. Together,

they are expanding Jewish life through music, poetry, worship, and community connection. “Joining this venerable SoCal congregation and beginning a partnership with Cantor Davidson is my personal jackpot,” she said. “I couldn’t have landed in a better place.”

“Judaism is very big on hospitality. We gather not just to pray, but to share meals, rituals, and milestones. Showing up for one another—whether in joy or grief—is an essential expression of gratitude and faith.”-rabbi Knobloch

This fall, Temple Beth El continues its longstanding tradition of interfaith outreach by hosting a community-wide Thanksgiving service on November 11 with local faith leaders. For rabbi Knobloch, these moments are both spiritually and socially powerful. “Gratitude becomes richer when it crosses traditions,” she reflects. “We’re reminded we’re not isolated faiths, but humans woven together with shared hopes.”

As Temple Beth El moves forward into its second century, rabbi Knobloch represents a thoughtful blending of past and future—a leader grounded in liturgy, attuned to storytelling, and committed to building bridges. Her journey, like the congregation’s, is one of honoring roots while embracing possibility.

With her voice as a poet, her heart for community, and her belief in the sacredness of everyday gratitude, rabbi Julia Knobloch marks a beautiful next chapter for Temple Beth El—and for the interwoven Jewish and interfaith communities of the South Bay.

In the sun-soaked streets of Southern California, a young man named Benny set out with a single ladder, a weathered paintbrush, and a heart full of ambition. With no team, no ad budget—just skill, pride, and perseverance—he knocked on doors and earned trust one project at a time. His secret? A promise to treat every house as if it were his own.

That promisee still guides everything we do at Blend Exterior Paint & Stucco.

Today we’ve grown into one of most respected names in residential and commercial exterior finishes in Southern California. From smooth stucco and detail exterior painting to expert repairs and complete facade transformations, we deliver unmatched craftsmanship with a personal touch.

At Blend, it’s never just about surface work. It’s about restoring integrity and helping every client feel at home. We bring decades of handson experience, clear communication and a level of care that turns first-time customers into lifelong clients.

Home wit H t H e Gupta Family Discovering the p ower of Shared Gratitude

For rahul and Kavita Gupta, gratitude is not a single gesture or holiday—it’s a way of life. Their journey from India and Malaysia to Palos Verdes is a story of courage, resilience, and the enduring belief that gratitude grows deeper when it is shared.

rahul grew up in India, attending Scindia School, a boarding school for boys beginning at age thirteen. Kavita’s childhood unfolded across Penang and Kuala lumpur in Malaysia, before she too attended boarding school in India at age thirteen. Their paths converged at Delhi university, where they met as students and began a partnership that would span continents.

After marrying, the couple immigrated to the united States in 1984 with little more than determination—and $7,000, just enough to cover Kavita’s first semester at Indiana university. Fortune, however, smiled on them. Kavita earned a 4.0 GPA and a full scholarship that allowed both to complete their graduate studies: rahul earning his MBA and Kavita a master’s in education.

“It was the ultimate leap of faith,” recalls Kavita. “We left our families, our culture, and everything familiar behind—but we believed deeply in the opportunities ahead.”

Both graduated magna cum laude and embarked on long and fulfilling professional careers. rahul’s work in the corporate world eventually led him to serve as CEO of a software company and Group President of a Fortune 100 company, roles that connected him with figures from Colin Powell and Condoleezza rice to Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

Kavita, equally accomplished, built a career rooted in education, leadership, and philanthropy—serving as Past President of the Association for Talent Development’s los Angeles Chapter, a trustee for the Children’s Hospital of los Angeles Foundation, and an advocate for Camp ronald McDonald for Good Times. She is also a published author, including her reflective book My Life Stories, written through the Storyworth program.

After nearly three decades moving across the country—from Maine to Missouri, Massachusetts to Arizona—the Guptas found their forever home in Palos Verdes in 2015. “We fell in love with the lush greenery, the ocean views from every turn, and the quiet beauty of the Peninsula,” says rahul.

“It’s hard to believe that such serenity exists within the second largest city in the country.”

Their days now include walks around Point Vicente, brunches at yellow Vase, and rounds of golf at Palos Verdes Golf Club, where Kavita also serves on several committees. The couple has embraced the Peninsula’s strong sense of community and balance between calm and connection.

Education remains central to the Guptas’ family legacy. Both of their children are proud uSC Trojans—ruchika, Class of 2009, and Kabir, Class of 2016—and today work in technology and finance, along with their spouses, in Seattle. The next generation—granddaughters Zaara and reya—bring boundless joy and have given new meaning to Thanksgiving celebrations.

“Our son and younger granddaughter were both born in November—on the same day,” says Kavita.

“So Thanksgiving has become a time when we all come together in California to celebrate family, gratitude, and those birthdays that remind us how blessed we are.”

Over the years, their Thanksgiving traditions have evolved—from grocery-store turkey dinners during their early years in America to grand family feasts and, occasionally, buffet celebrations at country clubs to avoid “all the dishes and cleanup.” Each version, they say, has held its own kind of joy.

For the Guptas, November brings not one but two major celebrations. Alongside Thanksgiving, they honor Diwali, the Indian Festival of lights— a symbolic celebration of good triumphing over evil. “While the kids were still home, we would light diyas, write in our gratitude journal, and share what we wished for in the coming year,” says Kavita. “It was our family’s own way of giving thanks.”

Today, even with their children grown and in another state, the family keeps the tradition alive, lighting candles and celebrating with friends across the Peninsula. They also participate in Karwa Chauth, a Hindu festival observed by married women for their husbands’ well-being— another reminder of family, faith, and devotion.

Philanthropy is woven into the Guptas’ story just as deeply as education. Having once relied on scholarships themselves, the family has made it their mission to extend that same gift to others. Over the past decade, they have funded 25 scholarships at uSC and gifted a meeting room in the ronald Tutor Campus Center. Kavita also established a scholarship at her alma mater, Indiana university, to support graduate students in instructional design.

Their charitable trust focuses on education, health, and children’s initiatives, while their local giving includes donations to the los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the California Community Fund for fire relief, and the Mayor’s Fund during the pandemic. At the Palos Verdes Golf Club, Kavita has found a unique tradition of her own: “Once a year, I love serving the staff,” she shares with a smile. “It’s a small gesture, but it’s my way of showing gratitude to the people who make this community so special.”

The Guptas will never forget Thanksgiving 2020—the year their granddaughter Zaara was born. “She had a difficult start and spent time in

intensive care,” says Kavita. “That Thanksgiving, we weren’t thinking about turkey or travel. We were just grateful she was here, healthy, and thriving. It reminded us that gratitude isn’t about what’s on the table—it’s about who’s around it.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, the Guptas reflect on the generosity that defines Palos Verdes. “This is a community that exemplifies gratitude,” says Kavita. “you see it in the way neighbors support schools, hospitals, libraries, the arts—everywhere.”

“ Gratitude is as simple as a thankyou or an act of kindness.”
— Kavita Gupta

One organization particularly close to their hearts is the Peninsula Committee for Children’s Hospital los Angeles, which has raised more than $21 million in 68 years. “That kind of giving spirit,” says Kavita, “shows how a small mission can grow into something extraordinary.”

Their message for the season is simple but powerful: give what you can, where you can. “Whether it’s a $5 gift or an endowed fund, gratitude is most meaningful when shared,” says Kavita. “Always remember the people who helped you along the way—and don’t forget to lift someone else up.”

St. Paul’ S l utheran Chur C h Celebrate S It S “60 th a nn I ver S ary”

On Sunday, October 12, St. Paul’s lutheran Church celebrated its “60th Anniversary” with a luncheon at the original red Onion. The celebration was attended by dozens of St. Paul’s members. A slideshow included photos from the history of St. Paul’s. Attendees discussed the church’s history, noting past pastors and longstanding members. Many fondly recalled rev. Thomas C. Cooper, who was pastor of the church from 1973-1990. “Pastor Tom” conducted Easter Sunrise Services at Marineland that were attended by over 2500 people.

St. Paul’s lutheran Church is a small and friendly church with an outsized presence in rancho Palos Verdes. The church participates in Harbor Interfaith Services and Family Promise to help the homeless and working poor, has a partnership with an orphanage in Nepal in which church members sponsor orphans, sponsors a concert series called Concerts by the Coast, and conducts regular food, clothing, and blood drives to serve the community.

The food at the “60th Anniversary” celebration was delicious and the room was filled with smiles. St. Paul’s welcomes all to its doors. Help celebrate the next 60 years!

The collection features postcard sets, a unisex t-shirt, and a fine art print—each showcasing a high-quality digital reproduction of Andrea’s original artwork. This hands-on process ensures every piece carries the unique character of her craft—something we’ve preserved in this exclusive offering.

Andrea’s artwork is inspired by the stories, landmarks, and shared connections that give a place its identity. Having lived in many places before settling in Southern California, she has a deep appreciation for local culture and community. Her hand-printed flour sack towels can also be found at Malaga Cove Ranch Market, and now her signature style is available in a new way through this special holiday collection.

A resident of the Peninsula since 1976, Kathy draws inspiration from the coastal landscape she calls home. With a Bachelor of Arts in Design from California State University, Los Angeles, her artistic journey has included commissions for USC, Chadwick School, Terranea Resort, and the official commemorative watercolor for the Palos Verdes Estates 75th Anniversary. Working primarily with dyes on silk, she creates vibrant, large-scale paintings that capture the movement, detail, and wonder of the shoreline’s living rhythms. When she isn’t creating, Susan can be found teaching at her Sea Horse Studio in Rancho Palos Verdes, where she shares her love of art and nature with students of all ages.

A toast to the Peninsula: the Perfect Local Gift for the holidays

let’s raise a glass to the passion and artistry being bottled right here on the Peninsula. Meet a few of the local winemakers who’ve embraced the Peninsula’s wine scene— each with a unique story rooted in passion, creativity, and community.

At the heart of it all is Jim york, the pioneering vintner behind the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s official American Viticultural Area (AVA) status. His dedication to cultivating grapes in our coastal microclimate has helped define the region’s terroir and introduced a new wave of locally grown whites and reds.

Alongside him are Kenneth Johnson and Greg Becker, two Peninsula residents whose passion for wine drives their curated blends and artistic small-batch offerings. .

This season, give the gift of local flavor. Each bottle in this guide carries the spirit of our community! Here’s to local winemakers, neighborhood collaborations, and the unforgettable taste of the Peninsula. Cheers!

To take your love of wine to the next level, be sure to check out the new Palos Verdes Wine Club—a must-visit destination for tasting and discovering local favorites right here on the Peninsula. learn more at pvwineclub.com.

JiM yorK,

Vintner & VisionAry

Jim York is the driving force behind Catalina View Gardens, a boutique vineyard rooted in the coastal terroir of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Known for his unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and place, Jim has helped transform a hidden South Bay hillside into one of California’s most compelling new wine stories. Nestled just across from Terranea Resort, Jim’s five-acre vineyard produces award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Provençal-style rosé—crafted in partnership with veteran winemaker Ken Brown, a pioneer of California Pinot Noir. Together, they make wines that speak to the land: elegant, restrained, and shaped by the region’s cool ocean breezes and fog-kissed mornings. Jim’s approach to wine is deeply personal. Harvests are small, averaging 600–700 cases per year, made from grapes grown on the Peninsula and crushed in Buellton. Every bottle is sold within the South Bay to local restaurants and markets, a true “farm-to-glass” operation that also includes avocados, citrus, heirloom tomatoes, and herbs grown on the same soil.

His pursuit of authenticity led him to champion the creation of the Palos Verdes Peninsula American Viticultural Area (AVA). In 2021, thanks in large part to Jim’s persistence, the region became only the second AVA in Los Angeles County—and California’s 142nd. It’s a designation that honors the Peninsula’s distinct climate, geology, and character. And it reflects Jim’s belief that this coastal plateau deserved recognition as a world-class winegrowing site.

A fourth-career vintner, Jim is a relentless steward of the land, a quiet visionary, and a local original. His wines don’t aim to conquer the world—just to reflect it. Specifically, this one breathtaking corner of it. For more info: Catalinaviewgardens.com

GreG BeCKer, esq. – ProPrietor, BeCKersChiLd Wines

By day, Greg Becker is a respected Trusts & Estates attorney. Kenneth Johnson – Author & MAVeriCK WineMAKer

Kenneth Johnson is both a poet and winemaker—two artistic paths intertwined by a shared quest for meaning and emotion. His journey into wine began with the written word. After publishing his book The Rose and the Silver Bell, he was inspired to bring his storytelling into a new form—one that could be tasted, savored, and shared in a different way. As a maverick winemaker—a term used for those who produce fewer than 1,000 cases a year—Kenneth crafts wines from hand-selected grapes grown in renowned California vineyards. Based in Paso Robles, a hub for bold, expressive wines and forwardthinking vintners, he curates each bottle with intention and artistry. The Rose and the Silver Bell wine, like its literary counterpart, is a testament to love, craft, and the magic that unfolds when a story finds a new medium. Echoing the evocative line from his book, “That kiss will last for all of time,” Kenneth’s wine invites you to experience poetry—one glass at a time. For more info: theroseandthesilverbell.com

Finding Clarity & Confidence In Legal Matters with Gary Varnavides

In last month’s issue, attorney Gary Varnavides shared what inspired his career and how his Wall Street law firm background gives him a unique edge when advocating for clients. This month, we continue the conversation, diving into how he helps clients navigate complex legal matters and his perspective on life in Palos Verdes.

PVM: How do you help clients navigate these situations with clarity and confidence?

Gary: I approach every case as if I were advising a member of my own family. Legal disputes can feel overwhelming—especially when they involve your business or life savings. My job is to simplify the process. I explain things clearly, outline the steps ahead, and create a plan so clients feel prepared.

When people understand what to expect, their stress turns into confidence.

PVM: What do you enjoy most about living in the Palos Verdes community?

Gary: I love the peace and serenity here, especially for raising our children. There’s a strong sense of community and so many activities for our toddlers as they grow. After a long day at my office in Century City, coming home to PV feels like stepping into an oasis.

PVM: What advice would you give to someone who thinks they might need legal guidance but isn’t sure where to start?

Gary: Don’t wait. If you’re questioning whether you have a legal issue, it’s best to reach out early. In some cases,, I am able to resolve a matter quickly or offer guidance without formal litigation. When people wait too long, the situation has oftenbecome more complex and challenging to resolve. A simple conversation upfront can save a lot of time, stress, and resources later on.

k.S. Choi Taekwondo Center 40th anniversary Gala

On Sunday, October 12th, the K.S. Choi Taekwondo Center celebrated its 40th Anniversary Gala at Michael’s Tuscany room in San Pedro. They opened their first location in 1984 right across the street from the gala location. The milestone honored the school’s journey from humble immigrant beginnings to becoming one of the South Bay’s leading martial arts academies. Founded on the dream of offering opportunity through Taekwondo, the school has grown into a community cornerstone serving thousands of families throughout Southern California.

The evening featured the presentation of scholarships through the K.S. Choi Foundation for the Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to youth, education and community development. The Indomitable Spirit Scholarship recognized world-class Taekwondo athletes who embody perseverance and future Olympic hopes, while the Art of Motion Scholarship, which was awarded to the young Creators Initiative, supports emerging young artists who also painted murals for local schools in the Palos Verdes Peninsula this year.

Guests enjoyed an evening of reflection, celebration, and support for the foundation’s mission: to provide opportunities for youth, athletes and families across the city through the benefits of Taekwondo. The gala not only honored four decades of achievement but also looked forward to inspiring the next generation.

Palos Verdes Golf Club and West Basin Celebrate a Milestone in Water Sustainability

On October 29, 2025, community leaders, city representatives, and members of the Palos Verdes Golf Club gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Palos Verdes recycled Water Pipeline Project, a landmark initiative that will conserve millions of gallons of drinking water each year.

led by the West Basin Municipal Water District, in partnership with the Palos Verdes Golf Club, California Water Service Company (Cal Water), and the cities of Torrance and Palos Verdes Estates, the project marks a historic step forward in regional sustainability.

Spanning approximately 3.5 miles of new pipeline from an existing West Basin water main in Torrance to the Golf Club, the project now delivers an annual supply of 210 acre-feet of recycled water—enough to irrigate the Club’s lush fairways and greens without relying on potable water. Another 15 to 30 acre-feet per year will support nearby parks and a local school, extending the environmental impact throughout the community.

“This is a forward-thinking investment in the future of our region,” said a representative from West Basin. “By using recycled water for irrigation, we’re protecting our precious drinking water resources and building greater drought resilience for generations to come.”

The benefits are far-reaching. Each year, the project conserves over 60 million gallons of fresh drinking water, reducing the area’s dependence on imported water from Northern California and the Colorado river. Over time, it’s also expected to lower future costs for developing new potable water sources for Cal Water customers.

Construction of the pipeline was substantially completed in spring 2025, followed by the installation of a new pump station designed to move recycled water to higher elevations. The project was supported by $2 million in grant funding from the California Department of Water resources, with an additional $2.5 million investment authorized by the California Public utilities Commission.

The completion of the Palos Verdes recycled Water Pipeline Project stands as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and stewardship—reflecting the shared commitment of regional partners and the Palos Verdes Golf Club to preserve California’s most essential resource.

South Coast Botanic Garden’s 9th annual Farm to Table dinner

outh Coast Botanic Garden’s 9th Annual Farm to Table Dinner offered an evening of elegance, enchantment, and purpose. Hosted exclusively for Garden Circle Members, the Garden’s highest level of membership, the event celebrated the beauty of community and the power of philanthropy—support that helps keep the Garden blooming for generations to come.

Guests arrived in striking black and white attire, perfectly matching the evening’s theme of contrast. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the cocktail hour came alive with a touch of the wild: two feathered ambassadors— a majestic Eagle Owl and a graceful Barn Owl—made stunning appearances, captivating the crowd with their piercing eyes and quiet poise.

As twilight turned to night, Pianomania took the stage, returning by popular demand after their sold-out Sunset Series show. Their dynamic dueling pianos act filled the Garden with laughter, song, and plenty of audience participation, transforming the evening into a joyous celebration under the crescent moon.

Guests followed a glowing trail of luminarias to beautifully set communal tables stretching beneath the stars. Before dinner, the Garden, in partnership with the San Dimas raptor rescue, released a rehabilitated owl into nature that will hopefully now call the Garden “home.”

Guests enjoyed a four-course, farm-forward meal inspired by the Garden’s seasonal bounty—each dish a playful balance of light and dark, savory and sweet, familiar and unexpected.

From cocktails and owls to music and moonlight, the event was a reminder of how magical the Garden can be after dark—and how vital its Garden Circle Members are in keeping that magic alive.
