issue no. 67
There’s something about this time of year that brings everything together for me the people we love, the memories we cherish, and the joy of returning home.
As we wrap up 2025 and celebrate Issue 67 of Palos Verdes Magazine, I’ve been thinking a lot about what “home” truly means. My kids now grown and away at college remind me often just how lucky we are. When they come back for the holidays, they drive around the Peninsula with the windows down, music playing, taking in the views and the winding roads they once took for granted. They repeatedly look at me and say, “We grew up in paradise.”
And this year especially, that hits my heart a little more.
Sometimes it takes leaving to fully appreciate the feeling of coming home.
Our cover image reflects that very moment: the flags waving as you turn onto Palos Verdes Drive North, Malaga Plaza and Neptune greeting us… that immediate sense of comfort, peace, and belonging. It’s a reminder that no matter how far we go, home continues to shape us.
Inside this issue, we celebrate the season and the community that makes coming home so special.
We take you inside a beautiful afternoon hosted by Melanie Lundquist to support The Lundquist Institute and their groundbreaking biomedical advancements happening right here in our backyard. It was an honor to attend and to witness firsthand the generosity, vision, and impact that people in our community are making not just here on the Peninsula, but around the world.
We also revisit the past with our “Then & Now” feature, reflecting on the places that have defined our experience of living here. These buildings, roads, and gathering spots are more than landmarks they are the backdrop to our stories, our traditions, and our futures.
This season reminds us that home isn’t just a place. It’s people. It’s connection. It’s gratitude. Whether you’re welcoming loved ones home, traveling across the country to reunite with family, or simply slowing down to experience the magic of the Peninsula with fresh eyes I hope this issue fills your heart with the warmth and wonder of the holidays.
Wishing you peace, joy, and the comfort of home today and always.
With gratitude,
Kristin Borden Founder & Editor-in-Chief Palos Verdes Magazine PO Box 4752 Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 90274 310-940-1445

&Now Then
When most people picture Palos Verdes history, their minds often go back to the 1920s the earliest days of grand planning and coastal vision. But another beloved chapter took shape decades later along the heart of the Peninsula: Silver Spur rd.
In the 1960s, Silver Spur became the bustling center of daily life the place everyone went.
The Peninsula Shopping Center opened in 1961, soon followed by the Peninsula’s first movie theater in 1963. By 1982, the very first Bristol Farms in Southern California joined the block, bringing a new kind of neighborhood market to rolling Hills Estates. Add in favorite hangouts like Peacock Alley and r olling Wheels r oller Skating Center, and Silver Spur rd. became where memories were made.
It wasn’t just shopping or errands this was where people connected. Families would gather

for a bite before a movie, teens would meet up after school, and neighbors would run into each other while picking up last-minute ingredients. And every December, the City of rolling Hills Estates made the season even brighter with the Parade of Lights a holiday tradition that still remains a favorite tradition.
What wasn’t originally designed as a holiday destination has become part of how the Peninsula celebrates the season. From the past to the present, we’re still here shopping for festive treats, grabbing cocoa before a show at the Norris, or simply enjoying the magic of familiar places lit for the holidays.
So this year, we’re taking a nostalgic drive down Silver Spur rd. revisiting the beloved spots we remember and the ones we treasure now celebrating where holiday joy has always felt close to home.

Fox Theater: The Peninsula’s First Movie Theater — Later Home to Rolling Wheels
As development continued along Silver Spur rd., the Peninsula’s first movie theater opened in 1963 in the building that is now Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes at 735 Silver Spur rd.. A Rolling Hills Herald article dated July 4, 1963, announced that the Fox Theater would hold its premier opening on August 7, 1963, featuring The Thrill of It All with Doris Day and James Garner.
Local businesses placed welcoming advertisements in the same publication, marking the arrival of a modern cinema to the Peninsula.
Less than twenty years later, the Fox Theater had closed, and the space transitioned to rolling Wheels roller Skating rink a new recreational

draw for local teens. A Palos Verdes Peninsula News article from August 1980 noted that the rolling Hills Estates City Council upheld a conditional use permit for the rink, with the proprietor anticipating a fall opening. Since 1961
The Peninsula Shopping Center has been a cornerstone of Palos Verdes life for more than 60 years. Construction began in 1960, with plans calling for 100,000 square feet of new store facilities at a cost of $2 million. The grand opening was celebrated in May 1961.
At the time, much of the area between Indian Peak rd. and Silver Spur rd. was not yet developed, and it would be nearly twenty years before the mall now known as Promenade | PV opened nearby.
Peninsula Shopping Center: Still at the Center of the Peninsula
A Los Angeles Times article from November 1960 noted that the new center would feature several anchor stores, including J.J. Newberry Department Store, Safeway, Lucky Market, Thrifty Drug Store, and Baskin-robbins 31 Flavors Ice Cream.
A second phase opened in 1962 with fourteen additional shops, including clothing boutiques, jewelry stores, and gift shops. Many of the original tenants have since changed, but Baskinrobbins is still scooping up smiles though no longer in its original spot.

Peninsula Parade of Lights: A Holiday Tradition Inspired by the Past
The Peninsula Holiday Parade of Lights has been a cherished community tradition since 1999, when the first procession made its way through the Commercial District along Silver Spur rd.. Guided by former rolling Hills Estates Mayor and Councilmember Susan Seamans, the inaugural event coincided with the grand opening of The Avenue of the Peninsula bringing new life to the commercial district and launching a festive holiday celebration. What began with decorated vehicles, equestrian units, youth groups and local organizations quickly grew into a Peninsula-wide favorite. Decades later, the City of rolling Hills Estates continues the tradition with the same spirit, sending floats, marching bands, youth groups, civic organizations, and equestrian units down Silver Spur rd., Deep Valley Dr., through Promenade on the Peninsula, and onto Norris Center Dr.
Over the years, the parade has honored a remarkable variety of Grand Marshals whose lives and achievements reflect the spirit of the Peninsula. Past Grand Marshals have included historic figures such as Olympic runner and war-time hero Louis Zamperini and Holocaust survivor and former World War II spy Marthe Cohn chosen to represent resilience, courage, and hope.
Other honorees have reflected the Peninsula’s local flavor: from sports star Kenley Jansen, to musicians, civic leaders, and community contributors. Local notables such as broadcaster Petros Papadakis, entertainer Larry Joe Campbell, and musician David Benoit have also served as Grand Marshals each representing a different piece of Peninsula history and community life.
Through every era from those earliest parade nights to recent celebrations the Parade of Lights remains a living tradition. It brings together multiple generations in festive celebration, reconnects neighbors, and shines a spotlight on both past and present community spirit.
Memories of Peacock Alley
Before TJ Maxx filled the space, shoppers once wandered through a unique marketplace known as Peacock Alley. The concept opened in 1977 and offered an open, contemporary shopping experience in a setting designed with redwood, glass, and a wide floorplan that showcased specialty goods from around the world.
A Los Angeles Times article from March 1978 highlighted Peacock Alley’s innovative design and its curated selection of independent boutiques. Among the vendors were the former beloved Peninsula toy shop Small Wonders and the well-known Beverly Hills chocolatier Edelweiss Chocolates, along with other favorite gift and specialty merchants.
By the early 1990s, the businesses had either closed or relocated, and the space transitioned to new uses.
A subtle reminder of Peacock Alley’s distinctive design may still be seen in the windows facing Indian Peak rd. once part of the layout where the restaurant Fu yuan Low was located.

Bristol Farms
Bristol Farms traces its beginnings to rolling Hills Estates, where founders Irv Gronsky and Mike Burbank opened the first store on Silver Spur rd. in November 1982. With deep experience in the food business especially highquality meats they envisioned a new kind of neighborhood market: expert service, carefully curated fresh foods, and a warm, engaging shopping experience unlike the typical supermarkets of the time.
From the start, that vision came to life. The heart of the store was its fresh meat and seafood counter, where everything was cut to order and never pre-wrapped. Produce, bakery items, and imported specialties were chosen with equal care. Shoppers quickly embraced the store’s distinctive approach, and Bristol Farms became a destination not only for locals but for South Bay residents seeking items they couldn’t find anywhere else.
fresh food. familiar faces. A neighborhood tradition — yesterday and today.
As the store evolved, it pioneered innovations that now define the brand an expanded seafood program, a world-class meat department, and restaurant-quality prepared foods. The addition of a full hot bar, the everpopular Cookie, and a commitment to discovering exceptional products reflect its enduring spirit of culinary exploration.
What has always set Bristol Farms apart, though, are the people. Team members like ramon in Seafood, Phil in Meat, Donna on the Front End, Ivan in Produce, and Isaac in Dairy are known by name celebrated in reviews for their warmth, service, and expertise.
More than forty years later, Bristol Farms continues to serve the Palos Verdes Peninsula as the neighborhood idea that helped redefine specialty grocery in Southern California. With the recent reopening of its in-store coffee and juice bar, it remains a gathering place in rolling Hills Estates just as it has been since day one.
As featured in The Shelby Report—the country’s leading grocery-industry news publication—this special 30-year tribute honors Bristol Farms, which opened its first store in 1982 and, by 2012, had become a beloved staple in California’s upscale grocery scene. The Shelby Report’s coverage underscores Bristol Farms’ commitment to quality, community and gourmet innovation over three decades

Rolling Hills Estates’ One-Stop Shop for Seasonal Magic at Peninsula Center
The holidays are officially here, and nothing makes the season brighter (or easier) than getting everything done in one joyful stop at Peninsula Center. Picture a day that starts with a quick, feel-good workout at Club Pilates, followed by a refreshing drink from It’s Boba Time as you stroll over to Mayer’s for your favorite breakfast sandwich.
With fuel in the tank, it’s time to start gifting. Bath & Body Works has the perfect hostess gifts—think warm vanilla sugar soaps and matching candles that feel festive and thoughtful without the holiday hustle. Then it’s over to TJ Maxx, where the jewelry cases are full of beautiful surprises your mom will absolutely love.
Since you’re already in a sparkle mood, a stop at Toujours is a must. Their dreamy necklaces and design-forward pieces make it easy to leave a few hints for your husband… just in time for something special to appear under the tree.
From there, it’s time to sprinkle holiday sweetness across the community. Crumbl Cookies makes it fun with limited-edition flavors—like the Double Chocolate Chip holiday batch—perfect for the staff at Silver Spur Elementar y, the PV High office team, and anyone else you want to thank this season.
For stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, and those last-minute surprises, Target has everything from cozy socks to beauty minis and games the kids will love. And no holiday is complete without spoiling your furry friend—PetSmart has scarves, treats, toys, and all the festive extras for your beloved pup.
When your bags start to pile up, take a break at Dragonfly Thai Bistro. A warm bowl of coconut soup and a Thai tea is the perfect midday reset before diving back into the fun. With renewed energy, head to Old Navy to use your Old Navy Cash and pick up classic favorites—like a great sweater for your uncle and slippers for Dad.
A quick stop at See’s Candies ensures Christmas Day will kick off with everyone’s favorite chocolates, and the UPS Store makes it easy to mail out your last holiday cards and packages.
Just in time for school pickup, swing by Code Ninjas for your little coder and PV Ballet for your dancer. Grab your dry cleaning at Starbrite Cleaners, then pop into Ulta Beauty—your daughter will love something fun and TikTokapproved like the Sol de Janeiro Beija Flor Body Cream or a viral lip oil.
Finally, end your day with dinner to-go from Chicken Maison—the perfect, no-stress way to head home feeling accomplished, festive, and ready for the holidays.
This season, skip the stress, park once, and let Peninsula Center help you find the joy in every errand. It’s holiday magic—convenient, cozy, and right here on the Hill.

T HE Lu NDQ u IST I NSTIT u TE A Legacy of Discovery, A Future of Global Impact
What began in 1952 inside simple Army barracks on the campus of Harbor General Hospital has evolved into one of the most impactful life-science institutions in the country. Born from physicians determined to improve care through science, The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-uCLA Medical Center (TLI) has always followed a simple but profound principle: innovation belongs in the hands of the people who need it most.
More than 150 principal investigators now lead over 600 research studies and 100+ clinical trials each year, driving advances in health care across Los Angeles and around the world. TLI’s community-focused programs including maternal and pediatric services that support more than 100,000 women and children annually ensure that breakthroughs do not remain in the laboratory. They reach families, save lives, and reduce disparities in care.
As TLI often says, “progress in research isn’t a straight line it’s a lifeline,” a philosophy that has guided the institute since its earliest days.
TLI’s reputation as a birthplace of medical breakthroughs continues to grow. In 2025, Bill Gates spotlighted an innovative lung surfactant developed at TLI a more affordable option designed to save premature babies who struggle to breathe, particularly in low-resource countries. It’s just one example of how discoveries made in Los Angeles are trans-
forming health outcomes around the world.
The belief that “when science meets compassion, entire futures are saved,” shared widely by those across the institute, remains foundational to its mission.
Today, TLI stands ready to expand its impact even further. Its 11.4-acre campus features state-ofthe-art laboratories, the BioLabs startup incubator, and soon, a 15-acre BioCenter tech park a bold development poised to strengthen the region’s growing biotech economy.
“Give with intention and your money works in perpetuity. One dollar can serve the entire world.”
—Dr.Melanie Lundquist

This progress has been made possible by visionary philanthropic leaders such as Melanie and richard Lundquist, whose giving approaching $80 million has accelerated life-changing work.
As TLI navigates a shifting national research landscape, continued investment has never been more essential. Federal funding constraints create real challenges: slower pathways from discovery to treatment and fewer opportunities for early-stage breakthroughs. yet under the leadership of President and CEO Joe W. ramos, PhD, the institute stands united in its focus and purpose.
With world-class talent, strong clinical partnerships, and a mission that begins and ends with people, The Lundquist Institute is built not just to face the future, but to shape it locally and globally.
Every discovery brought to life is another life given a future.
Double Your Impact — Why Research Funding Matters
Breakthroughs don’t happen overnight. They require years of experimentation, clinical trials, and the support to push discoveries forward — especially when lives are depending on the outcomes.
Your generosity plays a critical role in that journey.
Longtime Palos Verdes residents Melanie and Richard Lundquist are generously matching every donation 1:1 through the end of the year — doubling support for The Lundquist Institute’s most urgent biomedical research needs. Every dollar you give becomes two, accelerating discoveries that can save lives.
Your Gift Helps:
• Accelerate promising research into real-world treatments
• Expand access to innovative care for the most vulnerable
• Equip scientists with the tools needed to make lifesaving discoveries
• Ensure the next generation of researchers is trained and supported

As President and CEO of The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at HarboruCLA Medical Center a role he began in early 2025 Dr. Joe ramos is leading TLI through a transformational moment in biomedical research, ensuring the institute continues to advance groundbreaking science that directly benefits patients and the communities it serves.
“Together, as One TLI, we’re not just responding to change but leading it.”
— Dr. Joe W. Ramos
A nationally respected cancer researcher and scientific strategist, Dr. ramos previously led the Louisiana Cancer research Center as Director and CEO and served as Director of the LSu LCMC Health Cancer Center in New Orleans.
Before that, he spent more than a decade at the university of Hawai‘i Cancer Center an NCI-designated Cancer Center where he held multiple leadership roles and contributed to two successful NCI designation renewals.
Dr. ramos earned both his undergraduate degree and PhD from the university of Virginia School of Medicine and completed postdoctoral training at the Scripps research Institute in La Jolla, California.
Today, he is championing a bold future for TLI built on unity, collaboration, and impact.
The High School Summer Fellows Program
Since 1978, The Lundquist Institute in Torrance has offered an immersive 8-week research experience for talented high school juniors and seniors from Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Fellows work side-by-side with world-renowned physicians and scientists on real research projects, gaining hands-on lab training, mentorship, and a deeper understanding of how biomedical discoveries can change lives. The program concludes with a formal presentation of their work to peers, family, and members of the scientific community celebrating each student’s achievements and future potential.
A Beautiful Day: Generosity in Action for Lifesaving Research
Photos by Ed McClure
On November 28, 2025, supporters gathered for a warm and inspiring outdoor luncheon hosted by the extraordinarily generous philanthropists Melanie and richard Lundquist. Surrounded by the beauty of their home, guests came together in support of The Lundquist Institute’s groundbreaking biomedical research fueling innovations that have the power to change lives.
Melanie spoke to the group with heartfelt conviction, expressing her deep personal passion for advancing research that leads to real-world cures. Her unwavering belief in the Institute’s mission and in the people behind it was felt throughout the afternoon.
Attendees also heard from Dr. Joe ramos, the relatively new President and CEO of The Lundquist Institute. He shared his inspiring journey into biomedical science and the remarkable breakthroughs happening across the Institute’s campuses from pioneering therapies and clinical trials to discoveries that are shaping the future of medicine.
Together, their voices reminded everyone that every step forward in research begins with community support and that the impact of this work extends far beyond the Peninsula.
Meet the future of biomedical discovery. These exceptional high school students spent 8 weeks on TLI’s Torrance campus working alongside leading scientists and physicians through the High School Summer Fellows Program — a transformative experience shaping tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

Partners for Pediatric Vision’s Beary Special Build-A-Bear Experience for Children with Vision Loss
On October 12, 2025, 15 children with permanent vision loss and their families, who receive services from Partners for Pediatric Vision, had the opportunity to create their very own stuffed bear buddy during the much anticipated annual Build-ABear event at the Del Amo Fashion Center. Volunteers from Junior Vistas, the children’s philanthropy affiliated with Vistas for Children, Inc. and the National Charity League, Peninsula Chapter (NCL) helped make the experience special as they guided every child and family through the stations. From stuffing, washing, dressing and naming their bears, the volunteers provided support and described each experience. The children couldn’t wait to pick out clothing and accessories for their new furry friends! Each bear became a reflection of their personalities. The children also received glasses for their bears, thanks to PPV’s Parent Support Group Facilitator, Janice Goldhaber, MFT. PPV’s Family Specialist, Heather Dawson, made canes for the bears, adding a special touch. PPV is grateful to Vistas for Children, Inc. for sponsoring this meaningful experience.

PV Magazine’s First Parade of Trees Celebrating Home for the Holidays
This year marked Palos Verdes Magazine’s very first time participating in Toberman’s beloved Parade of Trees and we couldn’t have felt more grateful to be part of such a meaningful community tradition. Led with incredible passion and creativity by PV Mag team member Cindy Donnelly, our Heart of the Peninsula tree celebrated the magic of home and the local businesses that bring joy to our everyday lives.
Inspired by our Malaga Cove Plaza Holiday Gift Guide, the tree featured handcrafted ornaments lovingly made by Cindy, plus favorite finds from local shops including Corners of the World, the Point Vicente Interpretive Center Gift Shop, The rose and the Silver Bell wine, and even a delicious nod to Neptune’s Frozen Treats. Every detail was chosen to honor the people, places, and stories that make the Peninsula shine.
We are thrilled to support Toberman’s mission and to spread holiday cheer in a way that truly reflects our community spirit. Our hearts are full and officially in the holiday spirit!

Brain Games Where connection Keeps the mind active
Written by Lane Bullard
When Palos Verdes High School student Maxwell Park first imagined Brain Games, his hope was to brighten the days of seniors in his community giving them social connection, mental stimulation, and a reason to smile through friendly gameplay.
The idea grew from both personal and scientific inspiration. Last summer, Max participated in the Summer Biomedical research Fellowship at The Lundquist Institute, studying how fructose affects neural stem cells in early brain development. That work opened his eyes to a larger truth: what we do, eat, and experience throughout life plays a vital role in cognitive health.
At home, Max watched his grandparents face gradual memory loss. Seeing moments of frustration up close and the joy that returned through simple interaction made him more aware of the importance of daily mental engagement and companionship for seniors.
His volunteer work deepened that understanding. At the Palos Verdes Community Helpline, he learned how powerful simple presence can be for those experiencing loneliness. As a hospital volunteer, solving crossword puzzles, unraveling word games and playing cards with patients, he saw how even a single game of uno could uplift someone during a vulnerable time.
Brain Games combines all of these experiences. The program provides structured opportunities for intergenerational play where activities like Scattergories, chess, card games, and Hedbanz help sharpen memory recall, attention, organization, and strategic thinking, while also sparking laughter and positive emotional connection.
The program has grown thanks to a meaningful partnership with PVE-CArES, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department’s senior support initiative, which helps older adults maintain independence, social connection, and security as they age. With their support, Brain Games reaches more seniors who may otherwise experience isolation a factor closely linked to cognitive decline and health risks.
Max is also studying the mental and emotional effects of Brain Games for his AP research project, aiming to refine the program with evidence-based activities that maximize both cognitive benefit and participant enjoyment. His brother, Oscar, a Psychobiology major at uCLA, has joined the effort working alongside Max to expand the program and its volunteer team.
What began as one student’s desire to support his grandparents has become a growing community effort to help local seniors stay mentally active and socially connected one game, one laugh, and one shared moment at a time.
Join the n ext Brain Games s ession!
Connection and play are powerful ingredients for lifelong brain health. Brain Games brings seniors together for social engagement and fun cognitive activities at the Peninsula Center Library’s Conference Room. If you or a loved one would like to participate in future gatherings, please reach out — we’d love to connect with you!

electriKIDS Celebrates 25 Years of Kids’ Fitness Classes
While teachers and principals know her as Kristen DeLeo, Director of electriKIDS, to students at local elementary schools in the South Bay, she is “Coach Kristen” and she has been inspiring kids to be active and fit for an entire generation. This school year marks electriKIDS’ 25th anniversary. PV Magazine had a chance to connect with Kristen and find out a little more about electriKIDS!
“She is inspiring a whole new crop of students to love music and movement. It’s always one of the highlights of the year.”
— Barbie Hokanson, 3rd grade teacher at Cornerstone Elementary.
What inspired you to start electriKIDS?
After graduating from UCSD I pitched a youth fitness program to a popular gym in Encinitas, and they accepted my offer and hired me to design and r un it. To promote the program, I did an assembly at my former elementary school, and it was a hit. That sparked the idea of bringing fitness programming to elementary schools. In 2000, I decided to start my own business.
I was inspired to create electriKIDS because I wanted kids to grow up feeling free and confident moving to music. I wanted to reach ALL kids- non-dancers and non-athletes too. I have always loved teaching. I planned to become an elementary school teacher after graduation. But there is also an entrepreneurial side to me that I needed to feed, so I combined my dance experience, my knowledge of basic physiology, and my passion for teaching into creating a unique kids’ fitness program.
What is your connection to the Peninsula and the PVPUSD?
I moved to the Peninsula in 1999 to get married, and soon after I approached PVPUSD offering my services in kids’ fitness. They initially contracted me for only the after-school enrichment program. Before long, the word got out, and schools started to invite me to lead programs as part of the curriculum during school hours. I hired some assistant instructors and began leading programs like: Muscle Mania School Workouts, Ballroom Dance, International Dance, Movin’ with Math, Hoedown, and more- all of which I’m still doing 25 years later! Often the PTA or Booster Club will sponsor electriKIDS during school hours, and PEF which now runs the after-school enrichment, still partners with electriKIDS.
In addition to working with PVPUSD, I have been teaching classes with the City of RPV Recreation and Parks Department and have led kids’ activities at the City of RPV’s Summer Movie Nights. I have also led Girl Scout workouts for various PV troops since electriKIDS’ inception.
One of my favorite connections to the Peninsula is the number of High School students who have worked as assistant instructors over the years. Many of them were former students of our program. It is rewarding to give them the opportunity to experience working with kids in a leadership capacity before they go off to college.
How do you feel about marking your 25th Season?
It is mind-boggling to think that the students who enjoyed the program at its inception are now in their 30s, possibly having kids of their own. My own children, both PVPUSD students, went through the program during their elementary years, so I had the privilege of being their mom and “Coach Kristen” while at their school.
After 25 years, I am proud of the impact we have made and am grateful that the community has embraced the program wholeheartedly. I feel creatively and professionally fulfilled.

Local HistoryComes to Life with the Palos Verdes Community Archives
The Palos Verdes Community Archives is now just over a year old. In 2024, the Local History Center replaced its former platform with one that allows both discovery and contributions of photos and recollections. A “recollection” is a memory or even the names of people in a photo that is added to the item in the Community Archives. The community’s photographs, records, and recollections add to the richness of the Community Archives and serve to preserve the unique history of the community.
Monique Sugimoto, Archivist & Adult Services Librarian for the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD), manages the Community Archives. In the last year, she notes that over 1,000 items have been added. These include photographs, exhibits, documents, publications, collection guides, letters, organizational histories and even “stories.” Stories pull together information from various sources – not just the Community Archives – to create an information hub like a Wikipedia page. The Lighthouses story tells the story of the Peninsula’s three lighthouses and includes material from the Community Archives, the LA Maritime Museum, drawings from the National Archives, Point Fermin and the National Park Service, and even a video for K-5 students with a teacher’s guide.
Community contributions have ranged from a music playlist created by a former employee of the rolling Hills Skating Center (now Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes) on Silver Spur, to the names of people at an event held at PV High School in 1964. One person even tagged her father in a group portrait of former Dicalite mine employees.
The Community Archives is free, and you do not need a library card. If you want to contribute to the website, you need to register as a “member” with your name and email. Membership is free. The site is completely managed by PVLD and user information is not shared. Information submitted is reviewed and moderated before posting to the Community Archives.
The Local History Center invites you to view the Community Archives, palosverdeshistory.org, or visit the Center at the Peninsula Center Library.
A “community archives” is only truly a community archive if the community contributes whether it is an object or their own memories!
Have an old photo in a drawer? A memory tied to a local landmark? A name you recognize in a vintage snapshot? Add your piece of history to: palosverdeshistory.org Every contribution helps tell the story of this remarkable place.
