Publisher's Note
The holiday season is almost here! Soon, lights will brighten our streets, homes will sparkle, and neighbours will start looking for that perfect gift to share.
October was a lively month in the village. Congratulations to the winners of the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl: A Monkey Tree, Rubinstein Financial Management, and Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant. Halloween brought a strong turnout as costumed trick or treaters filled the village despite the rain, visiting local shops for candy.
The holiday season kicks off with Girls’ Night Out on November 20, a local favourite for shopping, socializing, and supporting village merchants.
Festivities continue on November 30 with the tree lighting celebration in front of the Tram Museum at 4:45 p.m. Horse-drawn carriage rides will once again circle the village, and the Christmas Classic Car Cruise returns with cars decorated for the season.
Santa arrives on Sunday, December 7. Watch for his boat coming into the harbour, then visit the Gulf of Georgia Cannery for photos. Inside, the Cannery will be filled with Christmas trees decorated by local merchants and community groups.
Holiday windows and oversized ornaments
bring colour to the streets, and local craft fairs are a good place to find thoughtful gifts while supporting local makers.
Our cover story features Splash Toy Shop, a Steveston favourite for 34 years. Owner Beth McKercher has created a welcoming spot filled with toys, games, books, and plush animals that make people of all ages smile.
The Steveston Community Centre and Library are preparing for a big change. The 68year-old building will close in December 2025 to make room for a new facility. Programs will continue at the temporary Easthope Hub across Moncton Street during construction. The new three-storey building will include a larger gym, fitness area, library, and multipurpose rooms for community use.
Village Donair is now open, and Sage & Sienna Boutique will open soon. Steveston Tattoo has moved around the corner, and Chew Chew has closed.
The Steveston Merchants Association continues its work toward creating a Business Improvement Area, with outreach now underway.
Wishing everyone a peaceful and happy season in Steveston.

SPLASH TOY SHOP: Toys That Delight, Amuse and Educate
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier & submitted
For 34 years, Splash Toy Shop has been one of Steveston’s longest-running and most beloved businesses. It’s a place where children explore the aisles wide-eyed, dreaming of the stuffie, game, or LEGO set they hope to take home, while adults rediscover their own childhoods. During the holiday season, the atmosphere becomes even more magical as shoppers search for the perfect gift.
Owner Beth McKercher first opened the shop on Second Avenue under the name The Steveston Toy Store. Two years later, she relocated the store to its home on Moncton Street and renamed it Splash Toy Shop. “The name came from both our proximity to the
water and a child’s instinctive joy at playing in the water,” she explains with a smile.
Beth’s connection to Steveston stems back to her own childhood. “I would go for bike rides with my dad, and we would get fresh seafood or buy lunch and treats,” she recalls. “In the early 1990s, the area was starting to change. It was still very much an active fishing community, but more families were appreciating the small-town vibe and relative affordability.” With new schools opening, including Homma Elementary, and a growing number of young families moving in, Beth knew a toy shop would be a natural fit for the village.
She remarks, “Splash is known as being a bit of a community hub. People often meet at the shop because they know it is always warm and welcoming. It is delightful to have new parents shopping in the store who grew up visiting Splash.”
“We select products that delight, amuse, and educate.”
Beth is always researching and sourcing highquality products and fun items to keep the selection fresh and interesting. She explains, “Everybody who shops here knows that we are constantly moving things around and changing out window displays. It’s wonderful to present products in an amusing way, and we have fun creating visual ‘stories.’”
Stuffies—from cats and dogs to crocodiles and unicorns—are all top sellers. Close behind are dress-up items, LEGO, books, puzzles, games and plenty of trucks. Classic brands like Ravensburger and Brio, as well as Folkmanis Puppets, Usborne Books and Fat Brain Toys are just a few of the popular lines offered.
Jellycat has taken the world by storm.
“It’s the first time we’ve seen a toy line driven primarily by adult consumers,” Beth says. “The designs are beautiful, joyful, and whimsical— and yes, expensive.” She praises the U.K.-based company for its strong retailer support, adding, “Demand has exploded globally through social media, creating a serious, ongoing shortage. We don’t expect full supply until summer 2026, so have removed Jellycat from our website to give local customers first access.”
Staff often hear delighted cries of, “Wow! I’ve always wanted one of these!”
When asked about must-have items this holiday season, Beth says that apart from the beloved Jellycat line, Douglas plush toys are famous for the variety of
dog breed replicas they produce. “Pokémon is still in high demand, and a unique product we started selling a few months ago is called Tambu or ‘tongue drum.’ It’s a beautiful instrument; essentially a hollow steel globe drum with a range of ‘tongues’ that correspond to musical notes. The resulting drumming sound is like Caribbean music, very melodic and fun.”
Great Pretenders is a Canadian company that designs quality pretend play costumes for children and toddlers. “They make beautiful costumes—dinosaurs, mermaids, firefighters, and princesses galore. They’re well-made and have no scratchy fabrics!”
Beth notes, “Splash is packed full of its best selection of the year by the end of November. Our season really kicks off with Girls’ Night Out and does not slow down until Christmas Eve. We are busy preparing our window displays and getting our stock of Christmas puzzles, sparkly novelties, and games ready for sales. Having our GNO sale start online only a few days before the event has been key to managing the overwhelming crowd of shoppers and allows people to shop for the best selection before the big night. “
She feels grateful for her employees, whom she describes as her work family. “They work so tirelessly and represent the business with such pride,” Beth says. “Tracey, the manager, is a magician when it comes to windows and displays and for navigating the technology that keeps the business functioning and thriving. Retail is not always an easy environment, but the staff handle it all with kindness. I am forever thankful for that.”
“We are so appreciative of the locals who choose to visit and support us, and we delight in visitors selecting something to take home to someone special in another country or region. There are very few independent toy shops in the world.”
“Giving people—kids of all ages—a wonderful experience is the most rewarding part of running a toy shop,” Beth reflects. “I think of
Splash as part experience, part business. We happily welcome people to come in and enjoy all the products without expectation. There are so few businesses that cater to all ages. Adults are often surprised by how many items we carry that are intended for them, not just for kids. We have achieved our mandate if we’ve put a smile on your face.”

STEVESTON COMMUNITY CENTRE AND LIBRARY: Transitioning
Toward the Opening of a Modern New Facility
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos submitted
The well-loved 68-year-old Steveston Community Centre opened in November 1957 and saw several additions over the years; however, it has now outgrown its needs. To better serve the community, the Steveston Community Centre and Library Replacement Project was approved in 2016. The existing building is slated for demolition preparation works in December 2025.
“It will be a bittersweet occasion,” says Beth Ovenden, Past President and long time Board Member of the Steveston Community Society. “The last special event to be held at the community centre will be our sold-out Breakfast with Santa on December 7. We’re sure many people will come to say goodbye; this place holds so many precious memories for Stevestonites.”
Some community members have wondered why the existing centre is being demolished before the new facility opens. The early demolishing of the existing community centre and library expedites the overall project
timeline and ensures that all construction activities are complete prior to the exciting grand opening of the new facility.
During this transition period, a temporary location called the Easthope Hub will operate within temporary modular trailers located at
4320 Moncton Street, across the street from the original building.
The Easthope Hub will provide popular programs such as:
• Licensed Preschool, unlicensed Time for Two’s, creative art classes, lively music programs and administrative services that keep things running smoothly.
• Library services will be provided in the Easthope Hub on a reduced scale, including a curated collection of current and popular material for all ages, regular core programs such as story time, after-school drop-in programs and book clubs, as well as convenient access to holds pickup, computers, printers, and an exterior book drop for after-hours returns.
The Steveston Community Society and Richmond Public Library Boards are excited to offer many popular programs and services during this stage of construction and look forward to welcoming the community to the new Steveston Community Centre and Library upon completion.
The fitness centre will close in November 2025 and will reopen once the new community centre is complete. Most programs will begin relocating on November 17 to nearby, convenient locations, including the Easthope Hub, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Martial Arts Centre. Select local school gyms (to be announced) will be used to host popular programs in the evenings and on weekends.
Most drop-in and registered programs and services will remain available. For information please visit www.richmond.ca/Steveston and for detailed information about programming, including temporary locations, please visit www.richmond.ca/register
During the transition period, parking will be available in the Easthope Hub lot. Additional parking can be found behind The Maple Residences, next to the lacrosse courts, with access from Chatham Street. Street parking is also available nearby.
Community centre and library users can look forward to a new 60,350-square-foot, threestorey facility featuring a double gymnasium, larger fitness centre, 12,000-square-foot library with study areas, community living room, and several multipurpose rooms for community
use. Permanent outdoor washrooms will also be added beside the Steveston Community Park playground to support the new facility and surrounding park.
According to the City of Richmond’s Steveston Community Centre and Library Project website, “This new facility will serve the Steveston community and surrounding neighbourhoods into the future, supporting physical wellness, learning, social connections, and creative expression of those who live, work, and play in the area.”
