Depot awards announced!

Shears Bros (Transport) Ltd

STD Developments Ltd

Congratulations to Shears Bros (Transport) Ltd (D56) of Christchurch, who were voted into first place for the coveted Depot of the Year award! They were closely followed by Cartwright Brothers (D80) in second place, and STD Developments Ltd (D57) in third place. As usual, the accolades are accompanied by champagne, certificates and a shield for the winner. STD Developments were awarded first place for Outstanding Contribution to the Network, again Cartwright Brothers came in a close second, and you voted Linkline Express (D29) into third place. As both of the awards are voted for by the Pall-Ex membership as a whole, all of the depots mentioned above can be confident that they are held in very high regard by their peers. Finally, awarded by the hub staff as Most Improved Depot of the year, was Worldwide Pallet Logistics, congratulations! The awards were announced at Pall-Ex Anniversary Dinner Dance in London, the event raised in excess of ÂŁ10,000 for The Stroke Association. Thank you to all who kindly donated auction items, and to those who bid on them.

Hilary Devey Message from Founder and CEO, Hilary Devey What a night! A big thank you to all the members and staff who made our anniversary dinner dance such a massive success. A special thank you for those who donated to our auction and to those who purchased on the night. The proceeds are going to a charity very close to my heart, The Stroke Association. We will be launching a special series of events and competitions in support of this charity for 2011 and I know you will all give it your support.

It was so nice to meet up with friends, old and new on Saturday evening and I am so proud of our network and our members. A fantastic well done to all of you, but special mention for our Sales Depot of the Year, D02, PMB and a massive well done to our Depot of the Year, Shears brothers, D56. It’s a great honour to win this title, as its voted for by the members in recognition of their service to the network. Well done Ian and Pete and keep up your good work. Patrick Kielty deserves a special thank you for his performance on the evening, as he certainly got everyone in the party mood with his quick wit and risqué comments. I thought the whole night was a massive success and the Plaza was a superb venue. It was also nice to have so many of our European partners with us to enjoy the event. Our Pall-Ex family is growing all the time and I have no doubt that our European strategy will make us stronger and deliver more and more opportunities to develop more sales and more delivery routes. We have enjoyed great growth in 2010 and I am certain that 2011 will see us all make further progress. It is important that we don’t rest on our laurels, as the economic climate for 2011 will still be challenging, just like the current cold snap we are enduring now. Make sure you all put Monday 4th April in your diaries for next year, as we are planning a Pall-Ex conference for this date.

I would like to wish you all a very merry C hristmas and a happy and prosperous new year.

The Princess Royal and Hilary Devey raise more than £40,000 for the Princess Royal Trust for Carers A fundraising dinner hosted by Hilary Devey, with The Princess Royal as the guest of honour raised £40,000 for the Princess Royal’s very own charity, the Princess Royal Trust for Carers. The 62 guests invited to Rangemore Hall in Derbyshire on the evening of Tuesday 12 October raised the money through a combination of attendance fee, table collection and an auction, with Hilary donating the main prize herself; a week in her villa in Marrakech, an auction lot that eventually raised £3,500.

Hilary said: “It was an honour and a privilege to have the Princess Royal at the dinner and her presence ensured an enormous level of excitement throughout the evening. Her work for the Princess Royal Trust for Carers is legendary and she is an inspiration to all of us to keep raising money for those who cannot do it themselves. They are the real inspirations through their determination and selflessness.”

Dipping their hands into their pockets on the night were, among others, John Caudwell, the founder of Phones4U who sold the business in 2006 for £1.4 billion, Nikki King OBE, the Managing Director of Isuzu Trucks and first female managing director of a truck manufacturer and Jatin Patel, a Kent-based Couture Designer. Pall-Ex also announced that it had raised £14,000 from its Penny-a-Pallet scheme.

Winter Newsletter 2010

We liked it so much we bought the company... Two years ago, Panic purchased a 15,000 square foot loading canopy allowing goods from 16 ft tall double decked trailers to be unloaded and transferred to the warehouse in any weather. No more wet freight, no more returns, no more forklifts and drivers operating in the rain, the snow or the hail. The yard area under the canopy remains dry meaning no hazardous ice in the depths of winter. Kevin Johnson Managing Director of Panic Transport (D24) says: “The canopy has been

a godsend and being able to guarantee dry freight has been a major boost to our business as well as having a very positive effect on staff working conditions and safety. The structure can easily be relocated to a new site should I choose to move premises” Kevin was so impressed with the quality of the structure and the speed and efficiency of installation that, when the opportunity arose to take a controlling interest in the business, he grasped it.

Brian Butler – The unsung hero Brian Butler, Forklift driver at Premier Palletise Limited (D91) has been awarded the Commercial Motor, Haulage Heroes accolade. Haulage Heroes provides the opportunity for employers to help recognise and reward their most committed member of staff, that person who regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Ace Express Freight reduces IT administration time by 85% with desktop virtualisation Ace Express Freight (D6 & D16) has announced their completion of a desktop virtualisation project.

Deborah Jenkins, Managing Director nominated Brian as he always goes the extra mile by being kind and helpful with drivers, who would perhaps be more than happy if he did their work for them as well! Well Done Brian!

Mini Clipper secures significant contract with global cable supplier, Nexans Mini Clipper Logistics, D77 has successfully tendered for the cable distribution contract with Nexans, the global cable management company. The 3 year contract comprises of a mixture of palletised freight and drums on the roll, some of which are delivered via hiab vehicles, with drums weighing up to 6 tonnes. Sales Director, Jayne Masters was delighted to sign the 3 year contract with this local company. “Our two companies found a number of synergies and instantly knew we would work well together. With over 1000 pallets to deliver all over the UK per month, and daily hiab loads starting in the New Year, Nexans will become a significant client for us. Their business is core, particularly as we handle hiab loads for a number of other customers with specialist delivery needs. This is fantastic news for Mini Clipper as we forge into our 40th year of trading in 2011”.

The project, which involves storing the desktop environment on a central server rather than on a physical device itself, slashes IT administration time by 85%, saves energy costs, reduces carbon footprint and mitigates IT risk. This has completely transformed Ace Express’s IT administration function with the bulk of resources now spent on strategically-important project work, which drives competitive advantage and improves business performance. TOTAL environmentally responsible SOLUTION Pall-Ex ECO DRIVE enables you and your customers to take a hold of your environmental obligations. The concept is simple. In addition to delivering and collecting palletised goods, the Pall-Ex network will begin to collect cardboard and plastic packaging material from customers utilising the inbound delivery vehicle for goods as the collection vehicle for waste. We have found that there is a market for small, frequent and non-time critical collections for simple waste (e.g. Cardboard and LDPE Plastic). The principal profile of this type of customer is generally a Retail type customer who often struggles for back-of-house space and seeks regular removal of waste. Since the trial of ECO DRIVE we’ve identified a two tier system which will provide a sustainable and incentivised solution that the whole Pall-Ex network can benefit from. THIS is the key to our combined success:

Benefits

Who is this tier for?

TIER 1 This tier has been designed for depots with large and growing volumes of cardboard and plastic waste. It also caters for depots who are able to consistently generate high volume and turnaround 20 tonnes of material within a 4 week period (approximately 20+ pallets a week).

• • • •

Create additional revenue streams through means of diversification Improve customer retention and win new customers through being able to offer differentiated ‘Customer-driven’ service Get a lead into other potential waste streams each with revenue potential Get some good press

Other Information

By operating ECO DRIVE Tier 1, you‘ll benefit from two split revenue streams:

6

Firstly you will benefit from the local sales of the service to new and existing customers. Secondly, you’ll receive revenue from the baling and resale of bales on the commodity market.

TIER 2 This tier is intended for depots with cardboard and plastic waste in small quantities to dispose of. This volume may be waste produced at your own depot or volume obtained from your customers through offering a waste collection service.

• • •

Able to leverage existing trunks between your depot and the hub to minimise transportation costs Grow at your own pace but with the incentive of becoming a Tier 1 operator Deliver a ‘differentiated service’ to your customers, many of whom are already looking for ways to reduce paying Landfill Taxes

Tier 2 intends to engage depots who want to provide a waste collection service to their customers, however, do not currently have ‘large’ volumes to warrant taking the cost of a baler on site. This tier exists to help depots grow this service without adding costs for doing so; in fact, it may even allow you to remove certain costs which you currently have e.g. skip costs etc. Tier 2 allows you to find your own ‘place’ within ecodrive, giving you the ability to drive it in line with your customer’s demands and own commercial expectations. Tier 2 operators will receive from the sale of the service to new and existing customers, as you begin to achieve the appropriate volume (e.g. circa 20 pallets per week), you will be invited to become a Tier 1 operator and reap the benefits including selling the material via our approved partner – the greenhouse.

IT Update

We are now in the final countdown for the launch of TWINE. All Members have received their introduction to the system at the extensive training sessions held throughout October and we continue to provide advice to depots who want to maximise the potential and benefits TWINE will deliver to their businesses. In the last issue of Fastlane I outlined how, due to the design of TWINE, you can expand the functionality of TWINE to encompass your whole business using Microsoft Dynamics NAV (www.microsoft.com/uk/dynamics). Well, working with our partners Cooper Parry we have now, for a very limited time only managed to secure a fantastic discount on your first three NAV licences. Traditionally these will cost you £1000+ each BUT, up until December 23, 2010 you can secure your first three licences for just £1…yes, that’s just £1! If you want to take advantage of this offer then please email me as quickly as possible to secure your licences.

……DON’T FORGET! Members using Navman Wireless or those contemplating investing in Navman Wireless in the New Year can benefit from great Member discounts and will automatically be linked so that you can track your vehicles using TWINE. We are still providing one to one ‘deployment’ sessions at the Hub for Members to further familiarise themselves with TWINE and understand how to maximise the return from the system in our dedicated training suite . To book your session or find out more about the Navman deal please contact the Pall-Ex IT team. As always, your feedback and suggestions are very welcome so please feel free to contact me at the hub.

Sean

Ssherwin-smith@pallex.co.uk

Those of you that attended the training will know that we have set out an aggressive phase two development plan for TWINE over the coming months. This additional functionality facilitates even greater efficiencies for our Members and lifts the TMS (Transport Management System) capabilities into the same realms as third party systems that some depots currently employ alongside Pall-IT. I am therefore, pleased to report that due to a fantastic effort from the IT team, that a lot of this forecasted functionality will now be available in the first week of January which is ahead of the proposed schedule and means we will be able to commence work early on another very exciting ‘Top Secret’ project that by linking with TWINE will generate potential new revenues and savings for our Members … Watch this space!
