STAFF NEWS

Welcome to our New Year edition of Fastlane In recent times, our Pall-Ex network has undergone a great deal of positive evaluation and evolution, culminating in a comprehensive and positive management shake-up. I was delighted to welcome Kevin Buchanan into his role as Pall-Ex group managing director, and have been likewise delighted with the affirmative response to his strong start at Pall-Ex, where Kevin’s principal focus is upon the UK business. Our board restructure sees Chris Tancock leading Pall-Ex’s European development as group deputy managing director, while Sue Hodgson has made a flying start as director of network services, and (of course!) Adrian Russell remains firmly at my side as group deputy chairman.

We have additionally strengthened our hub personnel with strategic appointments to enhance Pall-Ex’s service in the areas of security and quality assurance. This renewal has brought fresh vigour and focus to every corner of our business, and our shared commitment to quality and success is even stronger than ever before. The Pall-Ex ethos of quality, ambition and excellence is reflected in the success stories which continually emerge from within the network. I love hearing about our members’ developments

and so do our readers, so get in touch to share your news through Fastlane! I know that I can count on your support, drive and enthusiasm, and that we will continue, throughout the entire network, to strengthen our hard-won and highly-valued position at the forefront of the palletised freight distribution sector. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2015.

Hilary Devey Founder and CEO, Pall-Ex Group

Board developments reflect progressive future plans Pall-Ex has announced significant changes to its senior management team as it continues to drive quality standards throughout the industry. Following a detailed review of Pall-Ex’s management structure, CEO Hilary Devey appointed former Palletline MD Kevin Buchanan to the role of group managing director in November 2014. In addition, as part of Pall-Ex’s strategy for the development of its UK and European networks, former group managing director Adrian Russell moved to a new role as group deputy chairman, while Chris Tancock moved to the position of group deputy managing director. Commenting on the changes, Hilary Devey said: “I was delighted to welcome Kevin on board. His track record and passion for quality and growth convinced me that he has a pivotal role to play in the future success of the business. “No business can be successful while standing still. We have to look to the future to ensure we are well equipped and positioned for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. “We have planned further investments in our people, technology and network infrastructure as part of our

development strategy for the UK and Europe. “I’m confident that, together, we will continue to enforce our reputation as leaders in the industry.” Commenting on his new role, Kevin Buchanan said: “The plans we have to develop the organisation for the future are very exciting and will see us achieve increased profitability and security for our network members. “I’m looking forward to working with our partners in the UK and Europe as we continue to pioneer cost-effective logistics solutions and business growth for our partner networks, our members and their customers.” Pall-Ex has also announced Sue Hodgson as its new director of network services. Sue will head up the operational management of Pall-Ex’s UK

network, liaising with its member hauliers to deliver a consistent, high quality service for PallEx’s members and customers throughout the UK and beyond. Kevin’s first key appointment in his new role, Sue has 25 years’ experience in the logistics industry. Previously network services general manager at Palletline, she earned the company two consecutive Motor Transport Awards. “Sue has established herself as a very talented leader in the logistics industry, and it is fitting that she is able to bring her considerable skills to Pall-Ex to ensure our continued growth and focus on quality network services,” commented Kevin. “Her ability to achieve reliable and efficient service excellence will help to further strengthen Pall-Ex’s position at the forefront of our sector.”

Focussed on delivery Fastlane interviewed newly appointed group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, who was keen to outline his ambitions for the advancement of the Pall-Ex network. After seven years heading up a competitor network, what led you to join Pall-Ex? The opportunity to work with Hilary and the Pall-Ex network, along with the chance to further develop the business, was too tempting to decline. I am absolutely dedicated to establishing Pall-Ex as the best known and best respected palletised freight distribution network. We have some work to do; but it will be an affirmative and positive journey for everyone. Together we will build upon our market-leading position, taking full advantage of the tremendous potential for growth in Europe.

How will your leadership benefit Pall-Ex’s partners, members, and service-users? My past experience means that I have a great appreciation of the value and significance of belonging, a key benefit of Pall-Ex’s leading business model. I have a comprehensive understanding of member networks and am acutely aware of the need to support, develop and sustain the Pall-Ex network to our mutual advantage. It is my view that the majority of our Pall-Ex members want strong leadership and understand that our business requires strong leadership in order to be even more successful. I will expect our members and partners to be active stakeholders

in our quest for service excellence, and we will all benefit from that.

What does the future hold for Pall-Ex’s UK and European networks? We are building a team and developing a comprehensive, five year plan to ensure that we achieve our principal goal of becoming undisputed market-leaders for quality and profitability within three years. We will deliver business improvement and sustainable growth, based on the highest levels of quality service and standards.

Pall-Ex members welcome fuel cost relief Pall-Ex has welcomed the recent fall in fuel prices. “Fuel costs have been a thorn in the side of transport businesses for many years, so to see the costs coming down a little in recent months will, hopefully, ease the difficulties in the industry a little,” commented Chris Tancock, group deputy managing director of Pall-Ex. “The price of diesel is still very high and represents a massive portion of the direct costs of any logistics

business, in a sector where margins are already tight. “Thankfully, the fuel-efficient nature of Pall-Ex’s business model – which moves as much freight as possible while covering the fewest possible miles – means that any reduction in this cost is maximised for our membership of hauliers.” With supermarkets reducing the retail price of petrol on forecourts, it is expected that further pressure will see the wholesale costs of diesel continue to fall.

“Diesel costs our business £3m every year, and any reduction in the amount that we spend is a relief,” said John Cartwright, managing director at Pall-Ex member Cartwright Bros Haulage Ltd (D80), based in North Hykeham. “The amount of fuel that we use on both Pall-Ex and independent operations means that even a small drop of 0.5p has a positive effect. We are hoping the price continues to fall to sensible levels, and that taxation can be eased for the good of the UK logistics industry.”

£

Pall-Ex calls for greater investment to benefit the UK’s haulage industry Newly announced legislative changes, which aim to back business, increasing productivity through investment in skills, exports, science and infrastructure, will impact upon the transport and logistics industry. Fuel duty is once again frozen, while a £15 billion plan aims to improve the capacity and condition of the UK’s roads. The Roads Investment Strategy outlines plans to fix congestion and other issues, delivering relief through 100 road improvement schemes and adding 1,300 miles of additional motorway lanes. Kevin Buchanan, Pall-Ex group managing director, welcomed the announcement; but called for a

www.pallex.com

commitment to wider investment from the UK Government, explaining: “Successive governments have failed to deliver the major investment that has been required across our road networks. Road haulage is the most common method for moving goods in the UK, and the strength of the industry is intrinsically linked and critically important to the health and growth of the wider economy. “Here at Pall-Ex we are firmly on the side of the hauliers. We understand the many pressures, such as Euro legislation, fuel costs and driver CPC requirements, which are forced upon transport providers. The sector

needs to be nurtured and supported for the good of the overall economy. “This level of budget commitment to road improvements is a strategy that we welcome. However, a wide range of investment is needed, in people and in the sector as a whole. With further, comprehensive support, this strategy would have the potential to improve the prosperity of the haulage industry, and therefore the UK economy as a whole.”

Pall-Ex hub support boosts local charity Pall-Ex staff gathered up goods to support a foundation providing support and a home-from-home to the people of Leicestershire. Workers from all departments of the palletised freight distribution network’s Ellistown headquarters donated clothes, toys, homeware, books and DVDs to the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s charity shops, based at Ulverscroft, Leicestershire. Pall-Ex group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, said: “We all scoured our wardrobes and cupboards for useful items that could be resold to raise money for this really good cause. I’m proud of the team’s efforts and sincerely hope our donations will enable the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation to raise funds for its excellent work.”

Quality, assured!

“Many elements contribute to Pall-Ex’s success, and all of them rely upon the efficient running of its hubs. “My role is to assess and advise upon the transhipment of freight, giving members and customers additional confidence in Pall-Ex’s services. “I have already been able to

Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation chief executive, Alan Norman commented: “We are most grateful to Pall-Ex staff for their kind gift. “The Foundation is very inclusive and strives to make it easy for people to find a sense of belonging through an open community where they can feel comfortable and find a common bond with others. This inclusivity makes for high running costs, so we are always happy to receive help from generous individuals and businesses.”

A secure appointment Michael Richardson is Pall-Ex’s new security manager, and introduced himself to Fastlane, saying:

Fastlane interviewed Richard Leedham, Pall-Ex UK’s new quality assurance manager, to gain a brief insight into his role. “With past experience including the development and implementation of quality reporting systems; warehouse, production and project management, I jumped at the chance to join Pall-Ex.

My role leads to even further reduced discrepancies and increased efficiency for our network, benefitting everybody’s businesses.”

“I started my career in security as a policeman in the Royal Air Force, and have since worked for British Aerospace and York and Loughborough Universities, having most recently worked as regional security manager for a large facilities management company.” Michael, a rugby coach and member of Leicester fencing club, is keen to play his part in Pall-Ex’s growth and future success. He explained: “I will oversee the provision of security services both at Pall-Ex’s Leicestershire hub and throughout its UK network, liaising with its membership of hauliers to assist them in providing consistent services, as well as continually developing and improving the quality of security provided.”

HGV levy raises millions The Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) road levy has resulted in charges imposed on more than 112,000 vehicles from 76 countries since its introduction in April – enough to repair 320,000 of the nation’s potholes.

Pall-Ex group deputy chairman, Adrian Russell added: “In the past, Pall-Ex has spoken out against an imbalanced situation which meant that foreign drivers could undertake business in the UK, utilising cheaper fuel bought on the continent, without paying to assist UK taxpayers in the maintenance of our road network. This development is a massive step forward and I welcome the news, which will assist UK hauliers in providing competitive services.”

Transport minister Robert Goodwill commented: “We anticipated the levy would generate around £20 million a year. To take £17 million in just four months is impressive and shows that compliance has remained high since introduction.”

The levy is part of the government’s pledge to improve conditions for UK hauliers. All hauliers driving trucks weighing 12 tonnes or more must pay the levy, but the cost is included within UK hauliers’ vehicle excise duty.

More than £17 million has been hauled in by a levy on foreign lorries, the UK government has revealed.

Rising interest rates and the retail supply chain Hilary Devey, Pall-Ex Group’s founder and CEO, discusses the potential impact of rising interest rates upon consumers, retailers and their supply chains. The retail supply chain is ultimately dictated by consumer demand. If customers don’t have the funds to purchase retailers’ goods, sales figures fall. The interest rate influences the UK’s retail industry, directly effecting the amount of money people have available to spend. Since the recession, UK interest rates, set in March 2009, have sat at 0.5 per cent. This rate was set in an effort to keep people’s mortgage payments down and money in their pockets, and has helped to keep the retail market moving through tough times. At some point though, interest rates will have to return towards pre-recession levels, usually fluctuating somewhere between four and six per cent. Experts predict that this will happen in early 2015, but what will it mean for the retail and logistics industries?

www.pallex.com

Any sort of rise will hit those with mortgages, as repayments on variable rate agreements will increase, leaving homeowners with less spare cash to spend in the shops. People with savings, on the other hand, will be looking forward to a rate rise, as they start earning from their money again. This effect could benefit retailers, as people with savings may feel more confident in spending their money. I would expect to see retailers of essential items making it through pretty much unscathed; while non-essential brands in the mid-price range could notice a detrimental effect. Early investment in systems will put retailers in a position to lead. Improving stock management may well be the answer for many, and Pall-Ex is perfectly geared up to deliver retail benefits. Our complimentary suite of real-time

£17 million tracking solutions assists in mapping customer preferences, allowing retailers to forecast the stock needed in their distribution centres and stores. Meanwhile, our bespoke, source-to-store, Retail Plus service provides proactive solutions for the retail sector, delivering a proven competitive edge to retailers’ supply chains as well as their bottom lines. Gearing up for what could be tougher times by ensuring the supply chain is as robust as possible will mean retailers can survive and even succeed throughout changing trading conditions. We have witnessed a steady recovery of the retail market since the recession, which has undoubtedly been helped by low interest rates. The coming months will be a key period for everyone, and retailers need to prepare all areas of their business, especially their supply chains, in order to ride out the potential drop in consumer confidence following an interest rate rise.

Leon tunes in with a note-able appointment! Leon Fear, of Newportbased SW Freight Logistics (D102) has been appointed chairman of Cowbridge Male Voice Choir. Based in the Vale of Glamorgan, the choir, made up of more than 80 members, travels widely, performing concerts in support of various charities, and raised more than £20,000 in 2014. Its repertoire features classical Welsh choral pieces, popular hits and medleys of show music.

Marketing makeover for Intercounty Distribution Intercounty Distribution (D98) has reflected its ambition and celebrated its growth with a strong and streamlined new brand.

our proactive, experienced and adaptable business, with all the benefits that Pall-Ex membership brings, has enjoyed sustainable growth and success, serving a wide range of customers from local businesses to blue chip companies.

Since its acquisition by Pall-Ex in 2012, the Launceston-based haulier, a Pall-Ex member for more than 16 years, has gone from strength to strength, expanding its team of staff and fleet as well as its range of service offerings.

“Intercounty now operates more than 30 vehicles, from 44 tonne double-deck curtain-side artics to 3.5 tonne Sprinter vans. We wanted our fleet, as well as our entire business, to operate under a positive brand that reflected the strength and vibrancy of our business, as well as complementing our reliable and personal presence throughout Launceston and beyond.”

Commenting on the rebrand, Intercounty Distribution’s depot principal and general manager, Carole Bennett, said: “Intercounty Distribution are proud to be leading hauliers in the South West, which, given that it is a peripheral part of the country, is often considered one of the trickiest areas for networks to cover. However, Leon’s association with the choir goes back to 1997, when, after many years playing rugby in the valleys of South Wales, he decided to trade sporting knocks for singing in a male voice choir. At 23-years-old, Leon was the choir’s youngest member and recalls being welcomed with open arms. Leon met his wife, Helen, following a performance in Oxfordshire in 1999. Leon recalls: “The night of the concert culminated in karaoke at a nearby pub; where my rendition of Delilah caught the attention of a young lady who had been in the audience at the concert. Four months later, as the bells chimed on the eve of the new millennium, I asked Helen to marry me. Fourteen years and two children later, we’re happier than ever. The choir sang at our wedding, and plays a big part in my life. “I’m delighted with my appointment and would be just as delighted to welcome newcomers to our performances.”

Pegasus goes from strength to strength with Pall-Ex added: “Pall-Ex membership has benefitted our business, allowing us to offer our customers reputable, trusted services throughout the UK and Europe.” The company recently took delivery of an initial order of four Euro-6 Mercedes Benz Actros 2545 Bigspace cabs, along with five double-deck trailers fitted with curtains displaying the distinctive Pegasus flying horse logo. These are welcome additions to its fleet of 40 vehicles, which range from Sprinter vans to articulated units. The new trunking vehicles are already earning their keep. Fuel efficiency has increased by an average of 1.5mpg, plus, as Jacki explained: “Further investment in our fleet was a natural progression. Our artic units provide the core of our operations and can work up to 20 hours out of every 24. It is critical to our operation that we can operate reliable, efficient units.”

Pegasus Express Ltd recently transferred all of its pallet network trading to Pall-Ex, and now provides Pall-Ex network operations across four of its five depots, which are located throughout Scotland and the North of England: D70 is based in Inverness; D74 in Aberdeen; D75 in Dundee, and D133 is located in Glasgow. With Pall-Ex work now comprising around 20 per cent of Pegasus’s overall business, the company employs 75 people and offers some 30,000 square feet of warehousing. Apart from its Pall-Ex network services, Pegasus operates bespoke services on behalf of two major UK companies and enjoys strong relationships with a range of Scottish businesses, moving freight throughout mainland Scotland and the Islands. Pegasus Express was established in 1980, starting out as a courier company in Aberdeen which serviced the emerging oil industry. Adapting to changing market conditions, Pegasus has undergone a number of transformations, diversifying to incorporate parcels and then pallet distribution into its portfolio of services.

www.pallex.com

Conditions haven’t always been stable for the company; but a management buy-out in 2011 restored efficiency and profitability to Pegasus, thanks to the efforts and investment of its four owners: managing director Jim Cowie, finance director Jacki Murphy, operations director Willie Goodall and commercial director Joe McNab. Jacki Murphy explained: “By stripping back and rebuilding the company, strategically investing in its infrastructure, we ensured that we could amply meet the needs of our customers, offering a first class service and now moving an average of 3,000 pallets per week.” Part of the new management’s strategy for growth was to re-join Pall-Ex in 2012, having been a member for a number of years before the previous owner withdrew from the network. Jacki

Commenting on the challenges and opportunities specific to logistics providers operating in Scotland, Jacki explained: “The road network here is certainly unique, with a number of major roads still single carriageways, meaning that journey times and fuel usage can be considerably higher than they would be across comparable distances in England. We also have to deal with extreme winter weather, which mean that our roads can become inaccessible, bringing transportation to a standstill.” Harsh elements aside, the future looks bright for Pegasus. Jacki concluded: “We’ve gone from strength to strength, and will continue to develop our unrivalled service, assisting our clients in achieving their objectives as we achieve our own ambitions.”

11 Premier Logistics: Building on ten years of growth A Pall-Ex member since 2009, Premier Logistics (D42) has grown phenomenally from its inception ten years ago. Fastlane visited the Leicestershire depot’s Bardon headquarters to find out more from managing director Lee Christopher. Premier joined Pall-Ex due to its sound reputation and robust membership. Now turning over £17 million and covering the LE postcode area as well as parts of NG, CV, RG and SO on behalf the Pall-Ex network, there’s a bright, busy atmosphere throughout the company’s 200,000 square feet of office and warehouse space. Forty year-old Lee started out in 1991 as an apprenticed HGV mechanic, but was made redundant during the recession. He soon resumed his career within the supply chain, joining TNT Express as a driver in 1994. After various roles in distribution, Lee went into business with a partner, eventually buying him out to found Premier, which began as a one-van operation in 2004. With a team of 150 staff; around 120 trucks and trailers; an operation spanning pallets, general haulage and warehousing as well as a further 50,000 square feet of warehousing and a satellite depot located in Reading, Lee has little time to chat; but, having recently celebrated his company’s tenth anniversary, he paused to reflect on Premier’s progress. The depot marked its anniversary with a commemorative livery and party, with gifts and prizes including chilli plants as part of a ‘grow with us’ campaign which, judging from the conversation on Premier’s Twitter feed, are indeed thriving. Marketing is crucial to Premier. Lee commented: “Our marketing strategy reflects our confidence. We are proud of our innovation, energy and presence. We’ve invested £5 million in our distinctive fleet over five years. The fleet doesn’t stand still and nor does our business. We are always driving forwards and thinking ahead.” Premier sponsors Leicestershire’s major basketball team. Lee explained: “Our partnership with the Leicester Riders is a

great fit. There’s real passion. The crowd are part of the team, the atmosphere is genuine and has been built on hard work and dedication: we approve of that.” The depot is also an active supporter of charities including Leicestershire-based LOROS and the Rainbows Hospice. Lee explained: “We only ever get involved with anything because it feels right personally. Over the years we’ve worked with all kinds of people and watched some great friends go through some bad times. Our fundraising efforts are, more often than not, a tribute to the people we care about. It’s good to do good.” Quality and personal service are key components of Premier’s ethos. Lee explains that customer demand and expectations have never been more exigent, commenting: “Logistics operators must be flexible and intelligent. It’s our job to offer solutions. We ensure that our

team understands our customers’ goals and challenges.” According to Lee, success is, “all about the team. Finding the right people is a work in progress. We retain our staff by encouraging and rewarding honesty, loyalty, and ambition. We incentivise achievement and have created an environment which our staff are proud to be a part of.” Lee firmly believes that “growth comes from sheer desire. You gather momentum and take calculated risks; relying on your instinct while keeping a close eye on profit and loss. You treat your customers as partners, constantly developing a quality service, and you never undersell yourself.” Premier will maintain its momentum into the future. Lee aims to win Haulier of the Year at the Motor Transport Awards within two years, and, more immediately, is looking to further enhance Premier’s warehousing capacity.

Apprenticeships

Investing in a Premier future Premier Logistics recently launched an apprenticeship scheme, developed in conjunction with Coalville’s Stephenson College, and has so far recruited three local young people. Sixteen year-old Billy Kendrick is training in the vehicle maintenance unit; Jack Plant, aged 16, is working in the operations office; while 18 year-old Ryan Richards has joined Premier’s accounts department. Jack explained that all three had planned to secure apprenticeships upon leaving school, and were delighted to have won roles at Premier. Ryan added that the apprentices were having fun and growing in confidence; while Billy explained that his favourite element of the job was enjoying new challenges as part of a team.

Lee Christopher commented: “Training and young talent are essential to the future of the industry. We are implementing a succession plan by building young people and providing them with the skills they need for careers in an evolving sector. This will lead to retention and productivity, while the young people brighten up our business. “The industry can and must increase its appeal to young people and establish itself as a sector of choice for graduates and school-leavers. I don’t accept that logistics should be an unseen or overlooked part of society. There’s so much scope for rewarding careers and entrepreneurism within the sector. My business is proof of that.”

Since joining, we have increased our staffing levels five times, and we are looking to continue this trend in the coming years.”

Trucklink.eu grows with Pall-Ex Trucklink.eu (D114) has reported a 50 per cent rise in pallet volumes since joining Pall-Ex in April 2014. With network activity now accounting for around a third of the company’s business, turnover has grown by 15 per cent, to £3.1 million, in the past year.

A new business development campaign, undertaken in conjunction with Pall-Ex, has secured 12 new customers for the Ashby de la Zouch-based haulier, including Butchers Petcare, Blast Wash and Premier Warehousing. Trucklink covers the NN 1-7 and 11 postcode areas on behalf of Pall-Ex. As well as its network activities, the depot offers express parcel services, air-freight, and worldwide air-cargo services.

The business has 21 vehicles and 28 staff, including certified airside drivers, and was founded in 2006 by director Nigel Todd. Trucklink was established to provide predominantly air freight by road services; but business growth and diversification prompted its move to a 145,000 square foot depot, just off the A42, in 2011. “Network growth is the natural outcome of our efficient, economic and reliable business model”, commented Kevin Buchanan, group managing director at Pall-Ex. “Pall-Ex prides itself on strong and proactive services that deliver real results for our members and service-users, an ethos very clearly shared by Trucklink.eu.” Nigel Todd, managing director at Trucklink.eu, added: “Our move to join Pall-Ex came during a key period of development. It has given us a great opportunity to grow and increase our profile, particularly in Northamptonshire. “We are all excited about the future and look forward to further developing productive relationships within the Pall-Ex network.”

Continuous delivery

Sean Sherwin Smith, group IT director at Pall-Ex, reflects upon the latest developments in the network’s IT innovation programme.

Back in August, Pall-Ex launched its latest IT innovation. Our fully-integrated, automated, and network-compliant customers’ own paperwork (COP) solution streamlines members’ operations and boosts network sales. It automatically allocates scanned COP images to the relevant TWINE consignment archives, replacing physical paperwork with online, cloud-based documentation to ensure that COP is easily managed and coordinated with the movement of palletised freight. I am pleased to report that this simple and convenient solution has been adopted by our entire UK network, where it is massively increasing compliance while reducing manual handling and administration, and has been welcomed by members and customers alike. We’ve already had reports of improved cash-flow. The implementation of Pall-Ex’s COP system, another industry first for Pall-Ex, was a networkwide achievement: a great effort by all, which I am sure will be improving customer retention and sales efforts for all of our Pall-Ex members. It’s another service offering which sets us apart from our competitors. The launch of our re-branded and expanded Pall-Ex Connect international service has seen TWINE, the integrated operational application which underpins our Pall-Ex network, stepping up its

pivotal role as a pan-European IT platform. Members are able to book distribution services between any of Pall-Ex’s European territories using TWINE, benefitting from full, real-time track-and-trace visibility throughout freight’s journey, from collection to delivery. It is now as simple and secure for members to move consignments between Leicester and London as it is to send freight from Birmingham and Barcelona.

The implementation of Pall-Ex’s COP system, another industry first for Pall-Ex, was a network-wide achievement In line with our continual investment and expansion, the IT team is growing in strength and experience. I would like to welcome and introduce two new members of the development team - Patryk Banach and Kamar Patel. Both have joined the IT team as software testers, where they will assist in the rapid growth of Pall-Ex’s UK and European IT capabilities. During the past months, the IT department has been focused on improving the performance of TWINE. This

Major benefits and advantages of COP: • Massively reduced paperwork and manual handling • Automatic allocation of COP to the relevant TWINE consignment archive • Simple and reliable solution delivering clarity for members and customers alike • Automatic supply of network-compliant routing sheets • Instant notification and allocation of COP to delivering depots’ consignment lists • Easily, instantly accessed documentation that won’t go missing • Massively streamlined cash-flow and reduced delays in payment • Reduced printing, paper-trails and administration • Convenient cloud storage security allowing members to access COP at their own convenience • Mandatory compliance, leaving our customers satisfied and our competitors in the shade

initiative was predominantly brought about because of the wealth of functionality that has evolved within the system. Our development team has tweaked and trimmed the code, and we have seen some healthy improvements in efficiency in a number of locations on the system. This focus, combined with some on-going upgrade projects, will ensure that we all benefit from a much faster system which complements the various innovations Pall-Ex will be delivering throughout 2015. Finally, I am glad to report that we are seeing an everincreasing number of customers implementing Pall-Ex’s integrated solutions. Customers have identified the improvements in efficiency which a fully- or partlyintegrated solution can bring to their distribution departments, and are increasingly choosing to link directly with TWINE, or to integrate our Solitaire Enterprise solution. This growing uptake of our customer IT solutions clearly demonstrates that service-users are looking to commit to long-term relationships with their local Pall-Ex members and with the network as a whole. I look forward to seeing continued increases in these interface requests. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact the Pall-Ex IT team.

European expansion: latest developments As part of its expansion strategy for Central Europe, Pall-Ex hosted a series of meetings with more than 20 potential Principal National Partners (PNPs), with the aim of establishing networks in Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Representatives from companies hoping to benefit from the pioneering Pall-Ex model and create a profitable connection with the network’s existing national partners visited

Pall-Ex’s UK hub for first-phase talks throughout September. “Launching new networks in Bulgaria and the region of Slovakia and the Czech Republic is one of the next key steps in our aim to form a pan-European network,” explained Pall-Ex projects director, Anand Assi. “With operations in Romania going from strength-to-strength, the opportunity is open for us to create new links in our chain of operation across Central and Eastern Europe.” “The new PNPs will be integral to bringing our efficient model of

Streamlined services for Pall-Ex Romania Pall-Ex Romania launched a new southern hub in October 2014. The 4,000 square metre facility, in Bucharest, allows the network to process its growing volumes with increased efficiency and flexibility. Pall-Ex Romania operates a central hub in Sibiu and fulfils orders on behalf of clients including retailers, manufacturers, importers and freight-forwarders. Achieving 64 per cent growth in 2014, Pall-Ex Romania recently transported its 250,000th pallet, and has positioned itself as a market-leader throughout Romania. Claudiu Hila, managing director of Pall-Ex Romania, commented: “I am delighted with the progress made by our growing network. Pall-Ex was not only the first palletised freight distribution network in Romania, but the first in Eastern Europe. Our success proves the benefits of the Pall-Ex model, which members and customers have been quick to realise.”

logistics to the region, which is now well-established in the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Romania.” Following this successful first phase, second-stage meetings are already well underway. Meanwhile, latter-stage preparations to establish a PNP for the Benelux region are progressing positively. The new partners will have the opportunity to build upon the Pall-Ex Group’s success, offering new distribution services under the Pall-Ex brand and benefitting from its bespoke IT system, TWINE.

Strong domestic and international momentum for Pall-Ex Iberia Pall-Ex Iberia, which celebrated its third anniversary in June and relocated to a new hub in Eastern Madrid at the end of 2014, is distributing record volumes of freight and reporting steady business growth. The majority of its traffic consists of domestic freight movement; but the international dimension of Pall-Ex Iberia is developing according to the network’s growth strategy. The addition of a new member, ANT Logistica, a young and progressive company located in Algeciras, has further strengthened the network, allowing Pall-Ex Iberia to extend its range of services to Ceuta, in North Africa, and Gibraltar. Services throughout Gibraltar are delivered by Redwood Intl, a well-established partner of ANT Logistica which has provided

services throughout the territory for more than 20 years. Pall-Ex Iberia continues to benefit from Pall-Ex’s international dimension and is sending more freight than ever before to France and the rest of Europe, via the Pall-Ex Connect service. A seminar to introduce and promote the Connect service throughout the network’s sales force has resulted in record volumes. Sergi Tomás, sales and business development manager at Pall-Ex Iberia, commented: “Pall-Ex membership is an attractive proposition to hauliers throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Our growing network and range of efficient and cost-effective services continue to appeal to customers and new members alike, and we are delighted with our ongoing success.”
