PALL-EX NEWS

Welcome to our Summer edition of Fastlane We have all stepped up a gear in Pall-Ex’s collective journey to becoming the quality network of choice, and our efforts are paying off. Our network was shortlisted for a fantastic four Motor Transport Awards, triumphing to scoop the coveted ‘Team of the Year’ title! I was thrilled with this result, which acknowledges everybody’s collective positivity and performance. I’m delighted that our members are excelling in their own right, too, with Ace Express Freight (D06) picking up two industry awards, and members throughout the UK winning quality new business. The benefits of business excellence are felt throughout our network, where we all play a part in one another’s success. Achievement inspires achievement, and, as the teams

and individuals fuelling Pall-Ex’s growing network, we all share in one another’s success. The review and revamp of our TWINE business management system has been a resounding success, thanks to the input and support of our members as well as the expertise of our IT development team. Thank you for your support. I’m confident that together, we are forging ahead in the right direction. Pall-Ex’s evolving management structure will ensure that the business makes secure progress, driving appropriate change which will establish Pall-Ex as the unrivalled market-leading freight distribution solution.

It’s been a busy few months, with new procedures and the highest of expectations; but we are worth it. The future is bright for Pall-Ex. We’re providing for the future and creating conditions to support everybody’s aspirations and inspire our people at every level. With this in mind, I’d like to wish everybody an enjoyable summer break. Have a wonderful time, wherever you go and whatever you do. You deserve it!

With more than 24 years’ experience in the sector, Chris will use his knowledge to create, grow and retain long-term, profitable partnerships between Pall-Ex and its ever-growing suite of international partner networks, members and customers. A former board member at DX (Group) Ltd, Chris is no stranger to the responsibilities of a senior role in the global transport industry, with experience in business-to-business parcels, business-to-consumer parcels, freight, pick-up and drop-off solutions, as well as logistics. Chris said: “Joining a company like Pall-Ex, which has an expectation of excellent customer service as standard, is exciting but also a real challenge. Maintaining consistently high levels of care and delivery will be demanding, but I share the Pall-Ex ethos that customers and members should be at the heart of everything we do.”

Pall-Ex was announced as Motor Transport’s Team of the Year at the 30th annual Motor Transport Awards ceremony, which was celebrated at London’s Grosvenor House on Park Lane.

Pall-Ex welcomes new director Pall-Ex has announced the appointment of Chris Bowden as its new group sales and marketing director.

Pall-Ex triumphs at the Motor Transport Awards

He said: “Over the past 12 months, Pall-Ex has made a conscious decision to raise the bar across the industry through service excellence, and to demonstrate its credibility as the leading palletised freight network in the UK and beyond. “We have seen dozens of hauliers approaching us as the network of choice this year, since UK Pallets announced its closure. With Chris having worked with the likes of HP, Rolls Royce, ASOS and John Lewis, he’s an excellent fit to drive Pall-Ex’s high standards of service forward while continuing to attract the best new members and customers to our growing network.”

A finalist in four categories, including Best Use of Technology, Safety in Operation, and Business Excellence, Pall-Ex was the only palletised freight distribution network to be shortlisted for more than one award. Its Team of the Year title recognises Pall-Ex’s innovative approach to creating and implementing network-wide service and technology solutions. Judges were impressed by Pall-Ex’s collaborative, inclusive and compliant approach to introducing solutions which deliver clear benefits, including streamlined processes and cost-efficiency, for Pall-Ex’s haulier members, service-users, and endcustomers. Commenting on the win, Pall-Ex group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, said: “There is no higher accolade for any business

Kevin Buchanan, group managing director at Pall-Ex, explained that Chris was an obvious choice for the role, with a proven track record building key relationships in the logistics industry throughout Europe, Asia and the USA.

operating in the UK’s transport industry, and I was delighted to collect this thoroughly well-deserved award on behalf of our quality Pall-Ex network. “Pall-Ex is emerging as the clear network of choice for members and customers thanks to the many benefits of our ambitious business model and leading collaborative ethos. We can all take enormous pride in this networkwide achievement.” Known as the transport industry Oscars, the Motor Transport Awards champion the achievements of the industry, recognising innovation, outstanding service, efficiency and quality, and are judged by an independent panel of industry experts.

Achieving the right balance

New partnerships at Pall-Ex Three former UK Pallets members have been announced as the latest additions to the Pall-Ex network, adding nearly 100 vehicles to the group fleet. The hauliers are Woolner Freight in Wisbech, Denbigh-based Mars-Jones, and Richard Read (Transport) Ltd in Longhope. They are joined by Provincial Logistics, a newcomer to the palletised freight distribution sector based near Fleet in Hampshire. The four new additions will enhance the network’s presence in strategic regions. The postcodes covered by the new members include parts of the KT and TW areas by Provincial Logistics; parts of the IP and PL areas by Woolner Freight; CH and LL areas by Mars-Jones, and part of GL by Richard Read (Transport) Ltd. As part of UK Pallets’ proposed closure process, announced in January, Pall-Ex was the recommended network of choice for members affected by the plans. The Pall-Ex network’s focus on quality partnership and service delivery means it is able to offer both consistency and reliability in support of its new customers. Earlier in the year, Kenneth Howley Transport of Castleford, West Yorkshire, became the first UK Pallets haulier to make the switch Pall-Ex membership, followed by Bristol-based I.C Express and Ipswich’s Magnus Group. This brings the total of former UK Pallets members welcomed into the Pall-Ex network to six. Sue Hodgson, director of network services at Pall-Ex, said: “Recent developments within our network prove that we are seen as the best option for hauliers and customers up and down the country.

“Existing pallet distribution network members as well as newcomers to the sector are identifying Pall-Ex and its membership of quality hauliers as their preferred business partners. With a focus on marketleading excellence at the heart of all that we do, Pall-Ex provides opportunities for sustainable growth throughout the UK and beyond. I am delighted to welcome our newest members, and look forward to announcing further developments in the network.” Explaining the reasons behind the move to Pall-Ex, Anthony Marshall from Mars-Jones commented: “When UK Pallets announced their imminent closure, we were suddenly in a position where we needed immediate and reliable support. Pall-Ex was the logical option, due in part to its ability to take on high volume in our post code areas without compromising on service quality.”

A marathon effort by Steve Pall-Ex health and safety manager, Steve Underwood, took on the London Marathon to raise funds for the Carers Trust. Completing the 26.2 mile course in 5 hours and 2 minutes, Steve raised more than £1,000, and was inspired by his admiration for Britain’s young carers as well as the support of his Pall-Ex colleagues. He commented: “I had to dig really deep at times, but the sense of achievement is amazing. I’ve completed a number of challenges for the Carers Trust now, and this won’t be my last.” Since its inception, Pall-Ex has operated its Penny-aPallet scheme, which results in regular, reliable funding for nominated charities including the Carers Trust. The charity supports hundreds of thousands of carers, including young carers with an average age of just 12, throughout the UK.

Hilary Devey CBE, Pall-Ex’s founder and CEO, gives an insight into her views on the industry’s progress in terms of equality, skills and talent. My first job in logistics was as a sales clerk when I was 20, and I loved the fast pace. In many ways it’s a very different industry today, but the environment still inspires me to think of innovative new strategies and services. As a woman, the odds were stacked against me. Logistics was male-dominated when I started out, but my boldness forced my industry colleagues to recognise my abilities. By the time I founded Pall-Ex in 1996, the industry had progressed; but was still very one-sided. Logistics can be a tough business for anyone though, male or female. More than anything else, tenacity saw me through both the start of my career and the foundation of my business. The perception of logistics as a ‘male’ industry is still there, despite the fact that women are now better represented. Most drivers and warehouse staff are male, whereas women are more equally represented in office-based roles.

If I had a daughter who wanted to follow me into logistics, I’d warn her of the challenges and advise her to be strong. Overcoming challenges can be incredibly rewarding. I would wholeheartedly champion any woman who wanted to make a career in logistics. Our industry is female friendly; but it needs to do more to appeal to women, especially in manual roles. At Pall-Ex, we’ve actively targeted women while recruiting for our driving and warehouse roles. The reality is there just aren’t enough female applicants. Whenever we have the chance to recruit women into these roles, we’re delighted to welcome them on board. I’d encourage women to assert themselves and do whatever they want to do. Logistics isn’t necessarily seen as an attractive route to achieving something incredible. Pall-Ex is full of talented achievers; but few set out with a plan to work in the industry. That’s a shame, because truly logistics has a lot to offer.

Logistics requires a hugely varied range of people with a hugely varied range of skills, from foreign languages to vehicle maintenance. There are some great higher education courses specialising in the supply chain, as well as a growing number of valuable workplace apprenticeship schemes. If someone is willing to work hard, logistics really does present opportunities. For example, at Pall-Ex’s UK hub, we work with Leicester College to provide ongoing work-based skills training. Many of our most talented employees end up in logistics after working in another sector or after studying subjects such as IT or international business. They remain with us because they see so much potential in the business. As much as qualifications should be encouraged; ambition and common sense are essential, and the truth is these attributes cannot be taught. I would do it all again. There’s nothing like building your own business. Of course, Pall-Ex will never be ‘finished’ – there will always be new markets, customers and things to try.

Is your O-licence application taking too long to process? Anton Balkitis, transport specialist at law firm Rothera Dowson, examines the time taken by the Office of the Traffic Commissioner to process O-licence applications. It is suggested that a lack of urgency in processing goods vehicle operator’s O-license applications by the Central Licensing Team (CLT) has led to job losses and, in some cases, struggling haulage firms closing down. This particularly affects firms which are about to go into administration. Potential buyers must obtain an interim O-licence; but application processing can cause delays of several weeks, resulting in calls for a system to accelerate interim authorisation.

At Pall-Ex, 46 per cent of our office-based roles are occupied by females. Throughout the whole company though, it’s 26 per cent: it’s difficult to recruit women for ‘on-theground’ roles.

www.pallex.com

The increasingly onerous and complex, nine-week turnaround time for substantive licence applications needs to be improved: compliant operators in particular should have their waiting times reduced. The FTA has called for a service level agreement, criticising the Triennial Review of the Traffic Commissioners for its failure to offer solutions to improve the relationship between the Office of the Traffic Commissioner (OTC) and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). However, the Review contained several recommendations to improve the process and role of Traffic Commissioners (TCs). These include introducing a single national licence for operators with sites in more than

one traffic area, and empowering OTC staff to grant O-licences, allowing TCs to focus on enforcement. It also made recommendations to redistribute the OTC’s workload, proposing future changes to shift workload away from the TCs. The Department for Transport will consider these recommendations, but remains committed to supporting TCs in all of their current functions, unless and until any are transferred or amended. For information on obtaining an O-licence or help with your application, visit keepmeontheroad.co.uk or contact Rothera Dowson’s transport team on 0800 0463066.

6 Powering into the future PALL-EX NEWS

MEMBER NEWS Pall-Ex members net £1m account wins Pall-Ex members have secured new business worth more than £1million for the network.

Fastlane caught up with Pall-Ex group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, to discuss his insights into the sector and ambitions for the Pall-Ex Group.

collection to delivery, thanks to our system of barcode scanning.

In simple terms, what is Pall-Ex?

Could anyone have foreseen how much of an impact the internet would have on the sector’s development?

Pall-Ex Group is the leading provider of palletised freight distribution services in the UK and Europe. Our efficient, shared-user road network allows customers to book express delivery to any UK or European destination, paying for vehicle space, instead of a dedicated vehicle. Our brand enables independent hauliers to win contracts they wouldn’t be able to service on their own, and our business is very much based upon partnership. Some members’ entire businesses are based around Pall-Ex operations, while others offer network services to complement their general haulage operations.

Is there a typical Pall-Ex customer? Pall-Ex provides services to literally all kinds of businesses with a requirement to move ambient freight. Typically, customers make online bookings with their local Pall-Ex member. This creates a manifested job in our Pall-Ex IT system, TWINE. This system connects our Pall-Ex network, giving members visibility of shipments as soon as they are created, and allowing us to trace a consignment from

We also provide bespoke services for a number of corporate clients. Typically, this involves collecting a full trailer of palletised freight for delivery to 30 or 40 different locations around the country.

No! Our members increasingly provide complete fulfilment services for internet businesses: holding and managing stock, and sending it out on behalf of their customers. The internet has enabled these businesses to streamline their cost-base and that’s where we come in, because we can provide all that they need in a very efficient and cost-effective way. The web has enabled many businesses, SMEs in particular, to succeed; but for pallet networks, the growth of businessto-consumer (B2C) distribution brings challenges. Internet-shoppers are often unaccustomed to considering factors such as vehicle size and access. Although members are as helpful as possible, kerbside delivery can challenge endcustomers’ expectations, and there’s rarely a forklift waiting to unload the pallet! As providers, we’re constantly addressing and redefining our service offering to the B2C market.

How big a part do Pall-Ex’s European operations play within the Group? Pan-European, cross-border shipments now account for some 35 per cent of PallEx’s overall business. We have established domestic operations, exporting our Pall-Ex model to Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Romania, and are looking to add new networks in Benelux and Bulgaria this year. This creates a chain of partner networks, all delivering the same great value and high standards of connected service throughout the UK and Europe. Our bespoke IT system, TWINE, is bilingual, which unifies and standardises international operations, driving common practice throughout the Group.

Where are the biggest opportunities for Pall-Ex? Apart from redefining and expanding our B2C offering, the biggest opportunity lies in expanding our operations across Europe. I believe we will be making more money in Europe within five years than we will in the UK; while our UK operations will continue to offer a leading, exemplary benchmark for best practice. My motivation has always been creating market-leading organisations, delivering premium-quality services. Pall-Ex will become best in class - the undisputed network of choice.

Ace Express Freight also claimed the title of Ireland’s Best Managed Company in the Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards 2015. The only freight company in Ireland to achieve this prestigious feat, this is the seventh consecutive year that Ace Express Freight has won this award. Both awards recognise and celebrate excellence in logistics, encouraging firms to constantly raise the bar, innovate, and maintain their commitment to the industry in their day-to-day endeavours.

Philip Tracey, founder and managing director of Ace Express Freight, shared his delight in overcoming stiff competition from the likes of DHL, citing strong teamwork as crucial to the company’s successes. “These award wins are a testament to the high level of service, passion and dedication that our members provide – and we’re very proud of that. It’s a real morale boost, and working in partnership with Pall-Ex, we will continue to grow, and provide the highest levels of service worldwide.” The gala award ceremonies for both the CILT and Deloitte awards brought together the cream of the crop in Ireland’s transport and logistics sectors. Kevin Buchanan, managing director of Pall-Ex Group, agrees that partnership is key. He added: “Congratulations must go to the Ace Express Freight team for these fantastic award wins. Consistently delivering high quality service across our network is absolutely crucial, and we’ve achieved this by working in partnership with passionate, driven members such as Ace Express Freight.”

Hauliers throughout the UK made their voices heard in a new post-election poll commissioned by Pall-Ex.

Logistics firms believe their businesses will grow between 10-15% over the next five years, but half of all business owners questioned felt unable to comment on the abilities of the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, who returned to the role for a second consecutive term. Pall-Ex members listed skills, training and fuel costs as the top three issues affecting the industry, imploring the Conservatives to commit to further investment and provide greater support for small and medium sized businesses, by encouraging access to long-term growth capital. However, Pall-Ex group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, expressed concern following July’s budget announcement, which included a freeze in fuel duty. He commented: “To be fair, we all feared a hike in fuel duty after months of cut-price fuel at the pumps. But this freeze isn’t exactly cause for celebration among UK hauliers. The Government is still not supporting the sector – fuel costs are high and only a reduction would have been welcomed. “Our transport and logistics network underpins the entire UK economy, affecting everybody, from manufacturers and retailers right through to consumers. We all rely on the efficient, sustainable

www.pallex.com

and cost-effective delivery of goods up and down the country, every day. “These price freezes mean the transport and logistics industry isn’t under pressure to add limitations to deliveries or lobby for a further reduction in the months ahead. But we cannot take this freeze as a token positive gesture. “Hauliers have to fight against the sector’s struggle by ensuring their businesses are as efficient as possible, which is where Pall-Ex’s collaborative business model shows its strength. Optimised operations, eliminating empty running, and transporting the highest possible freight volumes are all incredibly necessary. “While of course we support an increased minimum wage for workers and their families, for some hauliers, this news is bad timing. It will squeeze the smaller firms in a low-margin sector incredibly hard. Combined with everrising operational costs and increasing

legislation, it’s a tough additional blow to an industry which so thoroughly supports this country’s economy. “There are wider issues the government should be tackling. Border control, the long queues of lorries at Calais held up by the risk of stowaways, driver shortages, training and incentives, and investment in infrastructure. The list goes on. “Hauliers and distribution networks like Pall-Ex are the beating heart of industry in this country, and we expected a greater measure of support in the emergency budget.”

IT UPDATE

EUROPEAN UPDATE

New partnership for Pall-Ex Italia Driving technological innovation The IT department remains instrumental in driving technological innovation throughout the network. TWINE V3 TWINE V3, the result of a user consultation and full systems review, was launched on June 6th. With its improved user-interface and background changes, TWINE includes simplified navigation and a sleeker look and feel, making the system faster and even easier to use. TWINE’s new messaging system is assisting in communication between depots, and we’ve had great feedback on the new streamlined, more specific pre-alerts for TWINE operatives.

Long-range scanners Long-range imaging scanners are also making a big impact throughout the network. Ever since they were showcased at our national members’ meeting in February, Pall-Ex depots have been investing in this new technology; which allows members to scan freight to specific hub trunks, helping to bring about faster trunk turnaround rates. Our new scanners increase availability of time to process and route freight, ultimately driving the highest network service levels and standards.

Consignment label Added to this is our updated consignment label. Reformatted to simplify operations and increase efficiency, the new label allows Pall-Ex network employees to identify priority inbound and outbound freight at a glance. This latest label will be the foundation of our standardised pan-EU labelling solution.

Compliance If that wasn’t enough for the IT team to be getting on with, we are also working on the implementation of limited quantity functionality within TWINE, as well as amending Pall-Ex’s customers’ own paperwork functionality to further support compliance across the network.

IT infrastructure Behind the scenes, we are making a considerable investment in IT infrastructure, including TWINE servers and hub scanners, and have launched the first phase of our virtual hub control tower. This real-time dashboard gives a live insight into how the network is processing volume. It displays freight from the moment it is manifested, on its entire route through the Pall-Ex network. It also monitors bay activity at the hub, allowing the operations team to be proactive in advising depots to clear their bays.

Sean Sherwin-Smith, Group IT director at Pall-Ex, delivers the latest updates from Pall-Ex’s IT team. The virtual hub control tower is adaptable, with the ability to split and view data by zones, and we plan to include live analysis of our forklift truck productivity levels in the future. Ongoing investment ensures the resilience, speed and visibility that Pall-Ex provides for its network members and customers. To support our IT provision and development plans there have been a number of promotions and new arrivals within the IT team.

The team Ronak Kotecha has been promoted to IT support team leader while Dean Stevens has moved up the ranks to provide second line support, while Hemang Thanki has joined the team as second line European IT support analyst. Mike Hardy now heads up the development team, which has welcomed lead web developer Issac Siju, whose wealth of experience has been gained across a number of transport-related industries. Pall-Ex’s IT department does a fantastic job. It’s rewarding for the whole team when their hard work pays off and benefits are felt throughout the network. I look forward to our future developments.

EUROPEAN UPDATE

International ambition Project director, Anand Assi, has spent more than 10 years contributing to the development of Pall-Ex’s international expansion. Fastlane interviewed Anand to obtain his thoughts on the future for Pall-Ex and the palletised freight distribution sector.

How effective is Pall-Ex’s huband-spoke model across an entire continent and beyond? The growth of e-commerce in the UK has been phenomenal; but signs suggest that domestic growth is slowing, while crossborder e-commerce is set to grow by up to a predicted 30 per cent in the coming years. Research suggests that UK exports into the EU are worth £211 billion to our economy, while today’s economies are more linked than ever before. Road transport is essential, because typically the last mile is delivered by road. Pall-Ex’s core competence is delivering that last mile, with cross-border operations linking members throughout the continent.

How does Pall-Ex’s model differ from competitors’ models and what are the benefits? Pall-Ex is the only pallet network to implement a master license system across Europe, where our national partners bring a wealth of local knowledge and experience to operations in their own domestic networks.

This creates ideal conditions for success. Our growing Pall-Ex brand, as well as the established reputation and connections of our partners throughout Europe, assist our national partners in recruiting the best hauliers and attracting quality customers to the network.

international growth. While domestic freight movement represents the majority of each network’s workload, Pall-Ex is demystifying cross-border distribution, thanks to developments such as our Pall-Ex Connect service, which last year grew by 189 per cent in terms of freight volume.

Our collaborative strategy results in a growing, international chain of last-mile networks, which is fit for the future.

Our shared values set Pall-Ex apart from the subcontractor model relationships typical within Europe. The ‘last mile’ element of logistics can be the most problematic, but Pall-Ex is claiming this space to position itself as an efficient, trusted alternative to the main bulk players and nationally dominant brands.

Is the movement of freight between Pall-Ex’s networks increasing? How does Pall-Ex facilitate and promote this aspect of its offering? Our vision is clear. We are building a business for the future, and Europe is the future of our business. Each member has access to a regional customer-base, while the Pall-Ex brand attracts corporate, multi-national customers. Our model creates import and export opportunities throughout all of our interacting networks and beyond. Cross-border movement means our networks share the benefits of one another’s

Is crossing borders a big issue for road network operators? What are the issues and how should freight be presented for European distribution? On the whole, the development of the EU has assisted in the free passage of goods and services. Each territory has its own domestic and international challenges: good communication and awareness of national laws are key to avoiding any potential problems. Gov.uk provides

useful information on import and export regulations.

What are the benefits of participating in or partnering with an international network? Connections drive commercial behaviour, while technology is streamlining international trade. In palletised freight distribution, as with all business, belonging to or partnering with a suitable international network is a competitive advantage, enabling businesses to develop and grow.

What does Pall-Ex’s expansion mean for those companies operating within emerging markets? Europe’s Central and Eastern markets are making great progress in terms of logistics infrastructure and networking. Here, Pall-Ex can provide expertise and play a key role in developing logistics and freight transport industries.

The first stage of growth for a new Pall-Ex network in this region is domestic, but crossborder development presents the greatest potential, due to manufacturing throughout the region for near-sourcing purposes. Equally, there is high growth potential for UK exports into the Central and Eastern European markets.

Pall-Ex has stated its ambition to be the market-leader within three years. How crucial is our European expansion in the achievement of this goal? Pall-Ex’s European development is an ongoing strategic goal. A comprehensive infrastructure of interconnected last-mile networks will drive the highest levels of sustainable quality. We have the capacity to lead the market in the UK and on the continent, where we are reshaping the European landscape for the distribution of smaller palletised freight consignments.
