What is Fashion Revolution about?

It takes a lot to make a garment. Not just the bits we hear about – the designers, the brands, the shops, the catwalk shows and the parties – but also the farmers who grow cotton, the ginners, spinners, weavers, dyers, sewers and other factory workers without whom the industry would not exist.

These people, the people who make our clothes are hidden from us, often at their own expense. The greatest cost these hidden people have to bear is to lose their life – as happened for the 1133 people in the Rana Plaza tragedy on 24 April 2013. This terrible accident is a symptom of the broken links across the fashion industry: we don’t know how things are made anymore. For Fashion Revolution, the Rana Plaza collapse has been a metaphorical call to arms. It has acted as a catalyst for those of us wanting to see change and demanding that the fashion industry takes a leading role in achieving it.

Why should we ask who made our clothes?

Fashion Revolution is about building a future where an accident like Rana Plaza never happens again. We believe knowing who made our clothes is the first step in transforming the fashion industry. Knowing who made our clothes requires transparency, and this implies openness, honesty, communication and accountability. It’s about reconnecting broken links in the industry and celebrating the relationship between shoppers and the people who make our clothes, shoes, accessories and jewellery – all the things we call fashion.

Has it helped bring change in the global fashion supply chain?

The movement has seen major success globally with consumers using our hashtag movements #whomademyclothes and #insideout. The global reach from online news and broadcast media was 16.5 billion. 63 million people from across 76 countries made the hashtag #WhoMadeMyClothes the number one trend on Twitter in 2015. Brands such as MarieClaire, Reiss, Aldi, Vivienne Westwood, Eileen Fisher, G-Star Raw, Esprit and M&S have shown support for the hashtag campaign and engaged with their consumers.

Any major global names that have lent their voice to the movement?

Yes, we’ve had encouraging support from some mainstream celebrities who understand the importance of transparency in the global fashion supply chain. Cate Blanchett has said that garment manufacturing demands the same attention as climate change. "If you offer options then it's not sacrifice, it's choice," she says. "As well as the fundamental improvement to our spiritual health, buying with conscience is about the

option to buy something for £1 that has the potential to blind 15 children as a result of an inhumane production line - or something else for £1.50 that will have a positive effect. Like climate change - we need to change the way we consume fashion. And if more individuals do then we make a change collectively."

• Emma Watson: "I've travelled to Bangladesh and visited factories like Rana Plaza," she says. "I knew how bad the conditions were before the collapse," she says. 'I think it's important that I'm accountable for the choices I make and understand they have serious consequences."

• Vivienne Westwood: "Do I feel guilty about all the consumption that the fashion world promotes? Well, I can answer that by saying that I am now trying to make my own business more efficient and self-sustaining. This also means trying to make everybody who works in it happy, if I can."

Some other celebrities who did the #whomademyclothes selfie included Christy Turlington, Livia Firth, Amber Valleta, Jade Parfit, Suzy Amis Cameron, Bibi Russell, French singer Zaz, Miss Guatemala, Skyfall Bond Girl, Tonia Sotiropoulou.

Have you seen mainstream celebrity support in Pakistan?

It’s our first year as a movement in Pakistan. Fashion Revolution Week is commemorated from 18th-24th April and we have all 80 member countries joining hands to maximise impact. We’re hoping for Pakistani brands, designers, fashionistas, academics and celebrities to realise the importance of ethical fashion and how their voice can help create an impact for the karegars that make our clothes.

How can one become part of the Fashion Revolution Movement in Pakistan?

Well, to join us under any capacity and create an impact as you can best, we recommend our audience to go onto the Fashion Revolution website: (www.fashionrevolution.org). We have resources available for designers, customers, academics, factories, farmers. For Pakistan you could also simply join our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram handle at @fashrevpak and get in touch with any queries or ideas for events or videos you may have. The #whomademyclothes movement is a simple selfie that can mean the world to the makers of our fashion. Simply tag the brand you're wearing and ask them this simple question in your caption: “I want to thank the people who made my clothes, @brand #whomademyclothes?”
