What talent do you wish you had?

To make excellent smalltalk. It gets you really far.

What is your style mantra?

Oversized rags and chains, shawls, jackets and peshawari chapals—urban malang style or Mughal splendor. Both work.

Tell us a little about your childhood in Lahore?

As a child I was coddled and adored and was drawing all the time, giving little voices to the characters I drew, who were usually women with very long hair. I had an obsession with Nazia Hassan’s hair. I grew up in Gulberg in Lahore with its bougainvillea, its canal colonies and foggy winter. I went to Aitchison College for school. I eventually found my place in the art room where I met my accomplices.

What first drew you to the arts?

It was never a choice for me. I always knew I was going to ‘be a painter’. It seemed absurd at times but I went right ahead anyway. It sounded great fun. And it is.

What is your background in the arts?

Most of it is outlined in your previous questions. I’d like to add that I got 24

a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master’s from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. I grew up looking at paintings by the local artist Colin David, mostly in friends’ parents’ collections.

Sometimes they would take me along when they went to artists’ studios to buy paintings or sculptures from them.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

When I moved to New York in 2006, I became an apprentice to the best moments of about three hundred dead Italians, Spanish, and Flemish geniuses, and also eventually the Islamic galleries when they opened in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum. So those years of apprenticeship come through in a lot my work, which is the result of a self-taught academic training, and a study of the tradition of graphic novels and historical miniature manuscript illuminations from Iran and South Asia.

Can you walk us through the process of developing your work?

I like the risks of painting without a plan, using intuition and memory to create imaginary worlds that explore this surreal space where personal and political concerns intersect. The paintings of David Salle and Brice Marden and the Indian artist Bhupen Khakhar were great inspirations for me. For me, Bhupen Khakhar’s work is a connection between South Asia's tradition of naive truck art, historical miniature painting and the history of Western European oil painting.

You use a lot of text in your work. Is there a theme or message you’re trying to give?

The text in the paintings is multilingual—at times gibberish, other times consisting of verses from 17th century Sufi poetry. They are extraordinarily contemporary poems on being an outsider in multiple worlds, on the disruption of the rigidly of religious and cultural rituals that divide, and the illusive nature of the divine. Some of the poems I use are by Bhulleh Shah and the contemporary poet of exile, Hasan Mujtaba, whose work points to the shape-shifting nature of longing and belonging. Alphabets in urdu punjabi English suggest a meeting of linguistic consciousnesses.

Tell us about your favorite piece.

Every piece is my favorite one when I’m doing it. Once I consider it to be finished though I’m really done with it and I usually put it away.

One of my favorite images is For Allen Ginsberg a large painting I showed in my last show Resident Alien in New York. The image was unplanned and evolved intuitively. It is multilayered and designed like a scroll. It moves between abstraction and representation seamlessly. The painting is autobiography as well as historical fantasy/fiction. These are all things I enjoy.

We read that you are working on a novel which 2015

is based on a family in Lahore. Can you tell us more about this?

I’m working on a graphic novel with the tentative title, The Electrician, with my friend Alexandra Atiya. She and are writing and I am illustrating the book. The book follows the inner lives of four members of a middle class family n Lahore over the course of a week. Steeped in the supernatural, the novel highlights the theme of social conflict in contemporary urban Pakistani life.

What is the one question that nobody asks but you wish they did?

No wishes there. I have loving, shameless, insane friends who ask me everything.

What advice would you give to a younger you?

The wilder, younger 17-year-old me would find the present me too sensible and boring to take my advice.

Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for?

I should have a show of paintings and video possibly in Karachi later this year. Excited!

If you could go back in time and have dinner with one person in history who would it be?

I would choose the quintessential 17th century Mughal king, Jehangir, the richest man in the world during his lifetime, a collector of exotic animals from all over the world and an amateur scientist. I would love to ask him many things over a modest meal of sushi— which I'm sure he would detest. I would ask

him details about his first meeting with the first English ambassador to India, Sir Thomas Roe. The accounts of this near-allegorical meeting—preserved in Roe's diaries and Jehangir's court gossips—are unforgettable. Of these two cultures, one would be eventually crushed completely by the Industrial Revolution of the other. I would ask Jehanghir what he really thought about the presents of jewels and liquor that the ambassador offered to him.

According to accounts, he wasn't afraid to look bored with the paltry pearls and said, frankly, that he was only really interested in the thoughtful liquors from Western Europe. I would show him pictures of the industrializing, globalizing world and the crumbling tombs of his cousins and ancestors in present-day Pakistan and India on my iPhone. I would show folios from his personal illuminated manuscripts that reside mostly in England now, and have become a part of the heritage of long extinguished empires.

What is the quality you most admire in people?

Intelligence, a sharp sense of humor, empathy.

What is a superpower you wish you had? to take flight.

Your most favourite word: It changes. These days I’ve been thinking about the word ‘itinerant’ a lot.

Most important things in your life: delicious home cooked food.

What do you do on a Sunday?

I play with my golden lab in the backyard.

I went to Istanbul. This was my third trip to this beautiful city. No matter how many times you visit, you just can't get enough. It has the best shopping, amazing food and so much to do. I always feel extremely inspired after my trips to this regal city.

It depends on what kind of budget you're on! The most interesting place you will ever visit is definitely the Grand Bazar where you will find various local decorative pieces, shawls, fabrics and jewellery. If you're looking for elite shopping brands then you must visit Istinye Park Mall. You will find all the high end brands here. For classy Turkish shoes, bags, clothing stores and home goods, pay a visit to Jawahir Mall. It is extremely affordable. And of course, Taksim has some great shopping stores along with night bars, restaurants and theatres. It is every tourists favourite spot.

Finally Any tips:

Turkey is one of the beautiful countries to visit. It's full of history, architecture, royal palaces, Sufism, mountains, beaches, terrains, tombs and mosques. To explore all of them the best tip is to do your homework before visiting to avoid wasting time. Doing your home work will save your precious time energy and money.

Bargaining is a must in Turkey whether you calling a cab or shopping in open markets so make sure you don't end up paying exorbitant amounts. Also for all the tourists in Turkey, their government allows a tax break so don't forget to get your refund at the airport. Save all your receipts!

Turkey is known to be a land of ancient history. From the minute you enter Istanbul till the time you reach your hotel, you will find every corner of it worth seeing. From historic buildings to ancient architecture and beautiful mosques, Turkey has a lot to offer.

The area of the Bosphorus is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend a cruise along the Bosphorous so you can enjoy the deep blue sea. One should not miss Topkapi Palace, Dolmabahce Palace, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Hazrat Abu Ayub Ansari's mosque.

Everyone has a different kind of prefence. We enjoyed all kinds of food in Turkey. Whether we were dining at a fancy restaurant, or grabbing food to go from one of their many street stalls, we had delicious food every day. Hamdi is a nice fine dining restaurant near the Bosphorus and the Blue Mosque. The view from there is spectacular! Taksim has great restaurants also. The gyros being sold on the streets are simply divine. And I must add, try the fresh fruit juices, Turkish desserts, tea and coffee!

Suggest places for a perfect night out?

For a perfect night out Alemdar Restaurant has a great ambience, tasty food and good entertainment. One should also visit Hodjapasha art theatre for Sufi durvish whirling dances, traditional Turkish dances and some historical shows such as Madam Rose from the Sultan's time.
