The city however is lacking any real decent hotels. The Radisson is run down and the others are just functional spots to spend the night and prep for your Fjord trip.

It indeed has been some time since Crash Landing flirted with the pages of Paperazzi. There is no excuse except it was summer. A summer of sober lazing, a summer of joyous reunions, a summer of gentle love and a summer of continuing adventure. However as the leaves prepare to change color and drift away, it is likely that you are planning your own next flight. Since I have long forsaken writing about the obvious spots, I encourage you to find your way this winter to either the Fjords in Norway or the Bunker clubs of Berlin. Both spectacular in their own ways, one reminding us of the might and imagination of mother-nature and the other the same but of mankind.

Lets start with Norway. It conjures up not much in ones mind. There is the curse of the Nobel of course, 'o beware recipient, though the world will embrace you but those in your own homeland will shun you away." Then the Vikings, the oil, the blondes and well that about sums it. I myself did not even know what a Fjord is till recently. All I heard was that Norway has them and that they are some combination of water, sea, mountain, snow. Since these are all elements my mom loves, I thought why not be whisked away to them.

The starting point for exploring the Fjords is Bergen. It is a picture perfect town perched on the western coast, dotted with independent coffee spots. Stop by Blom or Kaffemisjonen to perk yourself up with an artisanal blend 20

A Fjord is a long, narrow deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, typically formed by submergence of a glaciated valley. It is something one does not write about but experiences. For your Fjord adventure, I suggest you head straight to Kunt at Norway Active and he will tailor something depending on your level of curiosity. To get to the heart of the Fjords you take the Flam Railway, one of the steepest trainlines in the world. You pass countless waterfalls, climb over steep mountains and if are lucky will catch the magic fairies dancing in front of the gushing waterfalls. You can also get off halfway from the train and jump upon some bikes and peddle your way leisurely to Flam. Flam is a just a tiny village however with the best lamb hotdogs possible, Norway does lamb like no other nations so indulge your true Pathan. I suggest spend a night there to take it all in. The air is fresh, crowds none and at times that is what we truly need. In the morning hop upon a Fjord Safari rib-boat and zoom across the sea. Yes you will be covered up in an all weather protection gear but still the wind will make you feel alive. Up on the hills you will see remnants of old farms. Not too long ago the local folk will send their daughters to work up here. The sons were needed in the main farm and the girls will tend to the livestock.

The boys would make romantic trips across the sea and up the mountain to fetch cheese and milk and choose future brides. Norway, even back a mere 70 years was extremely poor. Around 750,000 of them resettled in the US from 1825-1925, thus the blondes in Minnesota. Even in the fifties there were food ration. However it was oil that turned the fortune around.

In any case, the Fjords have names and they are countless to name but on this stretch you will see the Aurlandsfjord, the Sognefjord and the Naeroyfjord. You get off at the small town of Gudvangen. I think there is still spirit left in you so would suggest you head over to Voss for a white water rafting rush. Its ice cold glacial water that will smack you into a state of alertness that only other type of snow can evoke. You do wish however that why not we can do this in our northern areas, however you can not afford to linger on the thoughts as the big drop is coming your way. After the rafting, just sit back in the Sauna and let your body recover.

I realized I was to also walk you through the mazes of the Berlin nightlife, however no matter how ravenous the dark room at Berghain is, it would be just not right to digress into that. We have just cleansed our soul in Norway. Lets leave it clean for a few days.

Taking over The Chameleon in Royal Palm, the two of them cooked up quite a storm all weekend. Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

Mykonos, Santorini and Athens. Greece had been on the top of my mom’s travel bucket list for a long time and we finally decided to go this summer!

Who did you travel with?

My mother, father and sister. I go to college in New York and my sister had been travelling around the world this past year; we decided to take a vacation so we could spend time together as a family.

Where did you stay?

Mykonos – Myconian Ambassador Hotel Santorini – Rocabella Suites Athens – Amalia Hotel

What are the best shopping spots?

I loved the quaint areas of the islands, there were hundreds of little boutiques with handcrafted souveniers and jewellery.

Mykonos Town, Fira in Santorini and the Plaka district in Athens – all had tiny streets with stores lining either side. I loved all the jewellery especially on the islands – I bought beaten gold earrings and necklaces made from the lava of the volcano that created Santorini, you definitely wouldn’t find anything like it anywhere else in the world.

Suggest some amazing restaurants.

Santorini (Fira): Palia Kameni Cocktail Bar, Cosmopolitan Restaurant/Bar. All the gelato I had in Santorini was amazing. I went back thrice in one afternoon to a stand in Fira – I couldn’t get enough of it!

travel diaries Finally, any tips?

One of the biggest highlights of my trip was renting a private catamaran for the day with my family in Santorini – we sailed for hours and stopped and snorkeled in the sea and at hot springs.

It was amazing to get away from all the noise and just be in the middle of nowhere spending time with my family, and it was also amazing seeing Santorini and it’s surrounding islands from a different perspective. I highly recommend it to anyone who goes to Santorini.

Suggest places for a perfect night out.

Our vacation was super laidback so I didn’t really get to experience much of the nightlife, but I’ve heard from so many people that the night life in Mykonos is amazing. Although I’d definitely recommend going to Fira in the evening and watching the sunset from one of the cafes on the cliff, particularly the Palia Kameni Cocktail Bar – you have views of the Caldera and it feels like you’re at the edge of the world, and watching the sky change colour from there is the most beautiful thing.

Tell us about sights that no one should miss out on.

Mykonos Town is beautiful – so many cobbled streets with colorful windows and stores by the sea. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Fira is a town in Santorini with the most beautiful views of the caldera and volcano. So many restaurants and stores to explore as well. You can take a donkey ride up the cliff from the Fira port – a traditional and beautiful way to explore the area.

Athens – The Parthenon. I know it’s cliché but its not overrated at all. It really is breathtaking looking something so intricately and beautifully designed milleniums ago. The Acropolis museum was also amazing – spent hours in there. Lykavittos Hill is also a great place to go, it’s the highest point in Athens and the panoramic views are stunning. It’s a bit of a hike to the top, but the view is totally worth it.

What can you do to relax and unwind?

Get a massage! I had a spa day with my mom and sister our last day in Santorini, and our hotel’s spa overlooked the caldera and you could see the volcano and the sea. It was so peaceful.

I love hiking and swimming so I love just lying on the beach and taking a swim in the sea. And shopping! Although it can get a little busy in the town centres of all three places, there’s something so therapeutic about going in and out of all the stores and seeing the local handcraft.

Athens: There are so many outdoor cafes in the Plaka area in Athens that overlook ruins from the Acropolis. We ate at a couple and loved them all.
